Prequel Part One - His Future Is in The Past
Prequel Chapter 1 - Remembering
Summary: Two years have passed since Ganon's defeat, and Link ponders his future.
A sudden flash of lightning and a resounding thunderclap jolted Link awake, immediately followed by the rhythm of heavy rain drumming against the window above his bed. Although the thunder was unwelcome, the soothing pitter-patter of raindrops brought a sense of tranquility. Ever since he was a child, Link had cherished the sounds of water, be it the majestic roar of a waterfall or the gentle patter of rain against a stable rooftop. As he glanced up at the window, he could see the first light of dawn beginning to seep into the sky.
"Too early to get up," Link muttered to himself.
So, he took a deep breath, rolled over in his bed, and closed his eyes again: not to sleep but to think.
Today held particular significance for him as he had an important meeting scheduled later that morning with Dr. Purah at the nearby Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. And despite the soothing sound of the rain, he didn't think he could fall back asleep: he had too much on his mind. So, Link lay there, his thoughts wandering.
For one thing, he needed to mentally prepare himself for the upcoming encounter. Dr. Purah was a brilliant but eccentric Sheikah scientist whose actions were often unpredictable. Even those who knew her best, like her younger sister Impa or her research colleague Dr. Robbie, were frequently caught off guard by her surprises.
What initially sparked the thoughts he wished to discuss with Dr. Purah?
His curiosity was piqued after reading one of the ten Zora monuments dispersed throughout the land surrounding Zora's Domain. This particular monument was located in the Zodobon Highlands, just a short distance northwest of where the imposing Divine Beast Vah Ruta stood sentinel atop a plateau. He recalled it happened one sunny afternoon while hiking with his old Big Bad Bazz Brigade friend Rivan.
"Whew! Made it!" said Rivan as he struggled to catch his breath. "Why couldn't you choose swimming instead of hiking today, Link?"
"Because I wanted to visit this monument," laughed Link. "I'm grateful for your company, Rivan. But things are safer now, and I can manage on my own. You didn't have to come with me."
"Tell that to King Dorephan," laughed Rivan. "All of us guards have standing orders to report if you're seen. And Captain Bazz has standing orders to assign someone to look after you. King Dorephan thinks of you as a member of the family, Link. And I volunteered to go when Bazz asked for one. I'm happy to spend time with my old friend, even if he's forgotten all we did as kids."
"Thanks, Rivan, and I didn't mean to sound ungrateful. I'm glad you're here, and your company certainly makes the trip more cheerful. King Dorephan has been wonderful to me, treating me like family," Link agreed, nodding. "But now that we're here, let's read the monument."
They both turned to read the inscription concerning the famous Zora Princess Ruto.
History of the Zora, Part Five
The Sage Princess Ruto
As told by King Dorephan
Long, long ago... In a past more distant than even the Great Calamity or the creation of the Divine Beast, Vah Ruta... There was a Zora princess named Ruto. We know that she was an attendant to the Zora patron deity and that she was a fair and lively girl, beloved to all. Around that same time, an evil man with designs on ruling the world appeared, bringing disaster upon Zora's Domain. It is said that Ruto then awoke as a sage, facing this foe alongside the princess of Hyrule and the hero of legend. Her achievements are remembered not only by the Zora, they are also forever etched into the history of Hyrule. The Divine Beast Vah Ruta, built ages later to face off against Calamity Ganon, was named in honor of Ruto. That the Zora princess—my sweet daughter Mipha —was chosen to pilot Ruta is surely the work of fate.
"Somehow, fate was all too cruel, wasn't it?" Link muttered after he finished reading.
"Yes, it was," said Rivan quietly.
"Maybe I should learn more about Princess Ruto," said Link after another moment. "Do you know any more about her?"
"Only a little more, what we learned in class," said Rivan. "Ironically, it is said that Princess Ruto developed feelings for the Hylian hero of the time and gave him the long-lost Zora Sapphire as an engagement gift. But perhaps the Hyrule Castle library has more information."
"Yes, good thought. And that was what Mipha was referring to in her diary when she wrote, 'According to the old legend, long ago a Zora princess fell in love with a Hylian swordsman. Perhaps there is hope. This will be a rare occasion that Link is not accompanying the princess. We should have some time to ourselves. Oh, I have an idea! At sunset, I shall ride upon Ruta with Link. Zora princess of the past...please lend me your courage!'"
"You memorized Mipha's diary?"
"King Dorephan gave me permission, and I've read it so many times I know it by heart," Link admitted. "But not only hers. I've also read and re-read the other Champions' diaries too. They gave me some insight into what they were thinking and doing back then. And my empty mind certainly has plenty of room to fill in."
"I guess that's true," laughed Rivan.
"Anyway, if you're rested, we can head back. I don't want to keep you away from your family for too long. How's your daughter, Dunma?"
"She's fine and enjoys following in her family's wake and serving as a guard," said Rivan. "By the way, whenever your name comes up, she jokes about when you two first met, how you asked if she was a female and how old she was. But I remind her that your memory was lost back then, and you didn't recall anything about Zoras."
"I blush to think how silly I must have sounded to her," laughed Link. "I hope she's not upset at me."
"No, no, not at all. She understands," said Rivan. "She just thinks it was amusing. Anyway, I'm ready to hike back."
And so, upon his next visit to Hyrule Castle, Link consulted what information was available in the restored Castle Library. There, the story became even more interesting, and started giving him ideas. The Link of that period was referred to as the Hero of Time, and he was called that because he traveled back and forth in time for seven years. He and the Sages battled Ganondorf in his original timeline and finally destroyed him.
But that wasn't the end of the story.
Link and Zelda's actions afterward created another timeline. And in that timeline, the hero's knowledge enabled him to warn the young Princess Zelda of Ganondorf's treachery. Ganondorf was caught before he could accomplish his evil intent. He was arrested, imprisoned, and when he could not be executed, he was banished to the Twilight Realm. He eventually returned to cause havoc, as told in the stories about the Hero of Twilight.
But that wasn't the point. The point was that the Link of that era had changed things for the better for a Hyrule timeline through time travel. The obvious question was: could it be done again? Of course, there was still a Temple of Time, but could anyone make it serve its original purpose? Could he go back in time and prevent Ganon's destruction just like the Hero of Time had?
The only one who might know about such things was Dr. Purah, which led to Link making an appointment with her later this morning.
In the two years since Calamity Ganon's defeat, much had changed. For one thing, monsters were now a rarity, with the few remaining taking refuge in remote corners of Hyrule. With the cessation of Blood Moons reviving the terrible creatures, their elimination became a feasible task, one of the first undertakings. People now traveled without fear. Although the Yiga Clan could still stir up trouble, Ganon's fall had apparently dampened their spirits. They had retreated into the shadows, at least for the time being.
Rebuilding Hyrule remained the primary focus. However, Link couldn't help but smile at the success of Bolson Construction. The company was thriving, with numerous workers and many projects. But thankfully, there were other construction companies now to give them a healthy dose of competition. Much to his relief, they no longer had the time to loiter around his house!
Speaking of his house, Link had chosen to live in the serene farming community of Hateno Village to escape the constant activity surrounding Hyrule Castle. Here, people gave him space, and his cozy hillside home provided a sanctuary for relaxation and reflection when he wasn't journeying. Within these walls, he attempted to chronicle everything he could recall in a journal he was keeping — a task more challenging than it seemed, given his nearly complete memory loss. His mind was blank when he emerged from the Shrine of Resurrection just over two years prior.
Initially, he spent weeks recovering fragments of memories from the images preserved in Zelda's Sheikah Slate. However, these only captured moments shared with Zelda. Next, he regained some additional memories by visiting major villages in Hyrule and conversing with their inhabitants. These interactions helped him remember a little about Urbosa, Revali, Daruk, and Mipha, his fellow Champions. And that traveling bard, Kass, had told him tales of the times Zelda recruited each of the Champions, which helped him see more of their personality. Sometime later, Kass found that group picture Mipha requested at Hyrule Castle, and it triggered a memory of that occasion.
Thanks to taking notes in his journal, he had sorted out all those memories and put them in order of their occurrence. And he realized the last memory he had of all of them together was that fateful moment by the East Gate of Lanayru Road when Ganon attacked, and each of the Champions raced back to their Divine Beast. They had placed their faith in ancient technology from ten millennia past, only for Ganon to outwit them all. After that, he never saw the Champions again, save as spirits.
And right after Zelda and his triumph over Calamity Ganon, the four Champion spirits departed Hyrule, their mission fulfilled. It was then he lost their unique abilities. Urbosa's Fury, Daruk's Protection, Revali's Gale, and Mipha's Grace had all vanished, leaving him with a sense of sorrow. Those powers had made him feel like they were still by his side.
Still, he did have a few things to remind him of his fellow Champions.
Displayed on the surrounding walls were the rewards given to him by village leaders for liberating the Divine Beasts. There was Revali's Great Eagle Bow, Daruk's Boulder Breaker, Urbosa's Scimitar of the Seven and Daybreaker Shield, and most precious of all, Mipha's Lightscale Trident. At least he had those keepsakes to remember them by, tangible items they had once touched in life.
And he had that one image of them all, though their expressions were not what you might expect. Hanging on his wall was the group picture of Zelda, the Champions, and himself that was taken by Purah just after the Champions' Inauguration ceremony with King Rhoam. Mipha had suggested the photo, and he was grateful she had. He remembered Mipha's endearing attempt to look her best for the picture, sidling closer to him and taking deep breaths. Then, the jovial Daruk had "brought them all together" with a giant squeeze. They all laughed afterward. Well, except for Revali, who was annoyed his dignified pose had been ruined and asked when Daruk would finally grow up. Anyway, Link occasionally looked at the picture to remember them, but it evoked bittersweet emotions. That moment of happiness and unity had been all too fleeting. Now, Zelda was the only one left; the others were gone.
But Link knew very well that his life extended beyond the scarce memories reclaimed from the Sheikah Slate and chance encounters. After fulfilling his duty to Hyrule, he yearned to understand more about himself and the significant individuals in his life. Even upon awakening from the shrine and embarking on his quest to save Hyrule, there were hints of other crucial connections—people and places that must have held significant meaning for him.
Zora's Domain proved to be the most enlightening source of information. Numerous residents remembered Link from over a century ago. While some older individuals at first harbored resentment, blaming him for past tragedies, others recognized him as a cherished friend and childhood companion. Conversations revealed that he must have spent considerable time there. As he spoke with King Dorephan and Prince Sidon, it became apparent that someone very special to him had lived in Zora's Domain, and she was the reason for his frequent visits.
Link discovered that Princess Mipha was more than just a fellow Champion. She had been a friend since childhood, caring for him and healing his wounds with her magic. As they grew older, she fell in love with him and crafted an exquisite set of Zora armor, anticipating their marriage. At first, he could scarcely remember Mipha or his feelings for her. His initial memory of her, triggered by her statue, was a sun-drenched afternoon atop Divine Beast Vah Ruta, where she tended to an injury on his arm and vowed to care for him. Rising from his bed, Link approached the group picture and focused on Mipha's image, thinking of her at that moment. Although it wasn't the most flattering picture, it was all he had.
He decided to prepare a vegetable omelet for breakfast and soon found himself eating at his modest dining room table. Although he cherished his cozy home, Link also enjoyed traveling. He would sometimes visit Impa at Kakariko Village, appreciating their conversations and her stories from the past. Impa had been an invaluable ally and guide when he awoke from the Shrine of Resurrection without his memory. She was among the few living Sheikah who remembered him before Calamity Ganon's attack, and she had even preserved his Champion Tunic for a century.
Whenever he visited, Impa greeted him warmly, inquiring about his well-being and the knowledge he gained during his travels. They would occasionally share tea. And though aging, her mind remained sharp. However, she didn't entirely support his attempts to remember his past. Instead, she would shake her head in disappointment, urging him to move forward and leave the past behind.
"When you're as old as I am, Link, you can dwell on your past," scolded Impa as she slapped her hand against her thigh. "A young man like you should be thinking of his future!"
Impa's granddaughter, Paya, still lived with her and was consistently nervous around Link. Even with his limited understanding of women's emotions, he could tell she harbored feelings for him. Impa was undoubtedly aware of this, and he wondered if her insistence on moving on hinted at her desire for him to form a bond with Paya. Paya was a genuinely kind-hearted and devout person whom he liked and respected. Under different circumstances, he would gladly get to know her better. However, he wasn't ready for a relationship, and Paya's discomfort around him was one reason he limited his visits to Impa.
Above all, he enjoyed spending time in Zora's Domain, conversing with King Dorephan, Prince Sidon, and others who remembered Mipha and him from over a century ago. Those discussions aided his recollection or at least helped him learn more about the times they had shared. He wore the Zora Armor almost constantly now. It suited him well, ensuring he maintained his physical fitness. Moreover, swimming up waterfalls often expedited his journeys. He still possessed other armor and his blue Champion's Tunic, which he reserved for the rare instances he attended meetings at Hyrule Castle.
Her Majesty Zelda had become the Queen of Hyrule, of course. Her coronation was a magnificent event, with crowds cheering, overjoyed to witness Hyrule under new leadership after a century of devastation. At seventeen years old, she was young to be crowned ruler, but she embodied hope for a long-suffering populace astonished to see her alive at all. Her survival was deemed miraculous, a sign that the Goddess blessed her and would bless her reign.
Link had attended the ceremony, naturally, and even held a distinguished position in the entourage. However, shortly after, he began to feel less needed. Zelda was now fully protected by the reestablished Royal Guards, and there were far fewer threats to her safety. Additionally, Zelda's duties kept her occupied, and he hesitated to intrude. A few months after the coronation, he requested a private meeting with her, a meeting he remembered vividly.
Link was escorted into a private reception room at Hyrule Castle. After a brief wait, Zelda entered, greeting him with her lovely smile. He promptly knelt on one knee.
"Your Majesty, thank you for seeing me. I know how busy you are," said Link.
"Link, I'm never too busy to see you. I would hope you knew that by now. And, as I've told you before, when we're alone together, please call me Zelda. I might start fining you a Rupee each time you forget!"
"Of course, uh, Zelda," Link chuckled as he stood up.
"How are you, Link?" asked Zelda. "You look well. You know I'm always happy to see you."
"I'm fine, Zelda, still traveling a lot," Link replied. "And I enjoy seeing you too. You look wonderful! Everyone I meet speaks highly of your capabilities as a ruler."
"I wonder if they sing my praises to you because they know we're friends?" Zelda laughed. "But I appreciate the compliment. What did you want to see me about?"
"This is difficult for me to say, Zelda, but I need to say it. I think it would be best for me to leave Hyrule Castle and focus on restoring my memory. I've made some progress here and there, but to delve deeper, I need to go out more and meet with the few people who remember me while they still can. Also, I'm not sure I'm needed here. Our task with Calamity Ganon is thankfully over, and you're well protected now. Of course, if you grant me leave, I'll miss the people I've come to know here. And I'll miss you most of all, Zelda," said Link.
He articulated this more eloquently than usual, having practiced beforehand. He nervously observed Zelda's reaction. Zelda smiled tenderly, though her voice was tinged with sadness.
"I'll be very sorry to see you go if that's your wish. Knowing you were here if I needed a friend or wanted to reminisce about my father and others was comforting. I admit my duties as Queen have occupied me, and we haven't had as much time together as I would have liked. I wish it were different. But I understand your desire to recover your past. And I think I know the person you want to remember most," said Zelda.
Link blushed as they both knew she meant Mipha.
"So, not without sorrow, I'll grant your request and relieve you, for now, of your duties here. Please take as much time as you need to recover your memories. But, Link, I hope you know you'll always hold a special place in my heart, and you're welcome to return here whenever you wish. And I hope you will do so frequently."
"Thank you for being so understanding, Zelda," Link said. "You know, if I may be so bold, how special you are to me as well, and I'll always treasure our time together."
With that, he bowed to take his leave, but Zelda stepped forward, stopping him and embracing him with a hug, which he reciprocated. Then, he closed his eyes, fighting back tears as they held each other.
"Oh, Link, I'll miss you so much!" said Zelda. "Please remember, I am your good friend. I wish you success in seeking your memories. But, as a friend, I would also like to see you happy. I hope you can move on with your life. I can imagine how painful your loss is. I, too, have experienced painful losses. But we cannot live forever in the past, Link. I would be happy to see you visit often and let me know how you are. In fact, I think I will make that a royal decree that you do!" Zelda teased him as they separated from their embrace.
"Yes, I will gladly honor your royal decree," laughed Link. "And thank you, Zelda."
Then he bowed and left the room.
That meeting had taken place almost two years ago. He visited Zelda at least once a month as promised and enjoyed seeing her. She always welcomed him warmly and set aside an hour or more of her busy schedule for him. He shared his experiences from his travels around the kingdom, and she discussed her plans for Hyrule's reconstruction. Zelda held a special place in his heart. Most of the life he could remember was the time they spent together. She had transformed from the sixteen-year-old girl her father had tasked him with protecting into a capable ruler. And yes, she was right. If the plan he would discuss with Dr. Purah couldn't work, he would need to move on from the past.
As he cleaned up, he recalled the times he had visited the Divine Beasts after appeasing them and shortly before Ganon's defeat. At each Divine Beast, he entered a virtual world where he could hone his fighting skills by battling once again the terrible blight creatures Ganon had created. It was invaluable training for his ultimate battle. And it also allowed him to hear the Champions' spirits a few more times. Mipha's voice, lamenting his inability to remember their time together and that she would never forget, made him choke up each time he thought of it. It was so cruel to lose someone who loved you so deeply.
Despite everyone urging him to move on with his life, for better or worse, he had achieved some success recalling his past life. And given what he had learned about Mipha, he concentrated on Zora's Domain, seeking places to trigger a recollection. Of course, it seldom worked, but sometimes it did. And when it did, it only reinforced his need to learn more about his time with Mipha.
He still remembered just a little, but much more than before. Now he could recall a time they sat together watching a sunset over the water. They had swum together earlier and were drying off, chatting about what each was doing. Then that beautiful sunset happened, and they sat quietly, sharing the moment. Or another time, they were sitting with their feet dangling in a pool of water covered with lily pads and laughing when the occasional frog would jump out and startle them. Mipha looked so happy being with him, and he remembered how content and at ease he felt with her.
As he recovered more memories, he also rediscovered more feelings. He realized he was in love with Mipha and wished he could be with her. They had been close friends since childhood, but their relationship grew into something much more as they matured. Now it was all gone. But he was hopeful that there might be something he could do about it.
Zelda and Impa had often told him that he should move on with his life. But moving on with his life was precisely the problem. What was his life now?
He had fulfilled his duty to Zelda and Hyrule as the hero. Zelda now had a kingdom to govern, but what was he to do? All the combat and survival skills he had trained so hard to master were no longer needed. He felt purposeless now.
It was ironic, but the more he thought about it, the more he felt that his only future lay in the past.
Prequel Chapter 2 - Meeting with Doctor Purah
Summary: Link presents his plan to Dr. Purah.
Doctor Purah, a Sheikah and the director of Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, lived atop a hill overlooking Hateno Village. Her experiments with an anti-aging rune had succeeded beyond expectations; she now appeared as an 8-year-old girl, despite being over 120 years old.
Purah and Robbie, the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab’s director, were renowned experts on ancient Sheikah technology. Both had tended to Link at the Shrine of Resurrection over a century ago.
As the rain ceased, Link strolled through Hateno Village en route to his meeting with Purah. He stopped at Hylia’s statue to offer a prayer, seeking success for his venture and solace for Zelda and his fallen friends. He then continued up the hill.
Link felt anxious about the meeting. Purah was known for her brusque demeanor and impatience; she preferred to devote her time to research rather than entertain interruptions. Furthermore, he worried that his ideas might be rejected.
Link’s deepest desire was to reunite with Mipha, even if it meant journeying back in time. If possible, he hoped to save the four Champions, defeat Calamity Ganon, and ensure that Princess Zelda’s original plan succeeded in that timeline. He would warn the Champions about their Divine Beasts’ corruption and help Zelda awaken her sealing power on time. With the advantage of hindsight, they could anticipate Ganon’s attack and better prepare. But if, for some reason, these goals proved unattainable, he would be content to return to the past, marry Mipha, and live the life they both desired for as long as fate allowed them.
He was no scientist and didn’t understand how the Temple of Time could be made to work. And even if it was possible to do as he wished, he was unsure he would be allowed to do it. Although stories told of previous heroes using the Temple of Time to travel back and save Hyrule, those journeys were not undertaken for personal reasons. Nevertheless, Link’s plan did provide a chance to save another Hyrule timeline. Ultimately, he would need Queen Zelda’s approval, though.
Arriving at the lab, Link knocked and was invited inside.
“Link, punctual as ever!” Purah exclaimed. “Please, have a seat.”
The room was cluttered with papers and books, and it wasn’t clear where to sit. Symin noticed Link’s confusion.
“Let me clear some space,” Symin offered, making room for Link. “This mess is evidence of our hard work. In fact… but I should let Dr. Purah explain.”
“Yes,” Purah interjected. “Robbie and I have been working on a way to protect Guardians from external control like Ganon’s. Robbie has long regretted not being able to help you and the Champions more, which motivated him to create ancient weapons and armor. Together, we’ve discussed how we could’ve averted the catastrophe that unfolded. I believe our new defense system will be effective. While we can’t test it against Ganon directly, we can simulate a strong attack on the Guardian’s control mechanism, and our defense repels those efforts. I’m very optimistic about this breakthrough.”
“Dr. Purah, I don’t think Link is here to discuss Guardian defenses,” Symin interjected.
”No, you’re right,“ Purah conceded. ”But your arrival coincided with a good stopping point. What did you want to discuss?"
Link cleared his throat and outlined his thoughts.
“Dr. Purah, there are ancient tales of legendary heroes using the Temple of Time to visit the past and thwart Ganon’s schemes. I wonder if I could do the same. By going back in time, I could alert the Champions and aid Zelda in harnessing her power. Together, we could destroy Ganon and prevent Hyrule’s devastation. It seems worth considering.”
“I see,” Purah replied. “It’s a fascinating idea. However, tampering with time is extremely risky, Link. Unintended consequences are always a concern, and though your intentions may be noble, the results may not be universally beneficial. You’ll have to accept that.”
Link listened intently as Purah paused.
“Despite the challenges, your idea is intriguing. The primary obstacle is activating the Temple of Time’s time-travel function. Even if we succeeded, the legends suggest that only select individuals could traverse time, with the Master Sword playing a crucial role. Additionally, controlling the temporal distance could prove problematic. In one story, the hero could only travel seven years into the past or future. In another, the hero’s journey through time was unpredictable. Even if we restored the temple’s capabilities, there’s no guarantee you’d arrive precisely 102 years in the past to alter the course of events. Furthermore, is it not possible that your plan would fail, leaving Hyrule in an even worse state?”
“It’s a possibility,” Link admitted. "But with my current memories intact, I could warn everyone about Ganon’s plan. The Champions wouldn’t be caught off guard in their Divine Beasts, Zelda would know how to invoke her sealing power, and your recent discovery might protect the Guardians from Ganon’s control. Could your safeguard also work on the Divine Beasts?”
“We haven’t tested it on them, but we believe it should work. However, if we intend to rely on it to save Hyrule, we must be certain of its effectiveness,” Purah said.
“Testing it fully will be difficult,” Symin added. “We can’t simply resurrect Ganon and politely request that he attempt to take over the Guardians and Divine Beasts to gauge our defenses.”
Link paused to consider their words.
“Understood. But how could things worsen if I were to go back in time? Even if we lost control of the Divine Beasts, the Champions would be alive, and we could reclaim them more easily than when I had to do it alone. And think of the lives and destruction we could prevent across Hyrule.”
Purah pondered Link’s proposal.
“It’s an enticing idea. I’ll discuss it with Robbie and see what he thinks. If he agrees that your plan has merit and we can decipher the Temple of Time’s secrets, we can present our case to Queen Zelda for approval. She may have her own reservations. Our research should initially focus on Timeshift Stones, which were used by the Sheikah to manipulate local time travel. Is there anything else?” Purah inquired.
“No, that’s all. Thank you for meeting with me,” Link replied.
He left the lab and returned to Hateno Village, feeling satisfied with the meeting’s outcome. Now he could enjoy a peaceful lunch in the village.
Prequel Chapter 3 - Sheikah Technology
Summary: After a year of research, Dr. Purah successfully creates a Timeshift Stone. Link eagerly anticipates using it in Zora’s Domain.
Link stirred from his slumber in his quaint Hateno Village home as dawn broke. The gentle symphony of birdsong filtered through the slightly ajar window, bidding him to rise. He yawned deeply, stretching his limbs to release the lingering traces of sleep, before rolling out of bed and shuffling towards the kitchen to prepare his morning meal.
Whisking the last of his eggs in a bowl, Link murmured, “Guess I need to restock,” as he poured the mixture into the sizzling pan. The aroma of the cooking omelet wafted through the air, awakening his senses.
When dining alone, which was his usual routine, Link found solace in revisiting the pages of his leather-bound journal. As he flipped through pages he realized that about a year had passed since his encounter with Dr. Purah, the meeting at which he presented his proposal.
Despite the passage of time, he had yet to hear from the reclusive scientist, which filled him with growing concern. On his visits to Hyrule Castle, Zelda had the tact and consideration not to ask him if he had heard anything. She knew how much this meant to him. But Impa, who seemed to know a good deal about what her sister was up to, would often deliberately bring it up. It was clear she wanted him to move on.
“I gather my sister has nothing to report,” Impa would say to Link over tea or lunch at her dwelling. “Maybe you should consider the possibility that she will never succeed and move on with your life?”
“Maybe, but I’d like to give her a bit more time,” Link would answer.
And if asked how much more time, he would just shake his head. Of course, he didn’t know. On some occasions, he grew so frustrated that he contemplated surprising Purah with a visit to her laboratory, but two factors stayed his hand: Purah’s notorious disdain for interruptions during her research and the flickering hope that she was on the verge of a breakthrough – a hope he feared might be dashed upon his arrival.
Upon finishing his meal, Link tidied his modest house before venturing into the bustling village center. His first stop was the East Wind General Store to replenish his egg supply.
“Hullo!“ chimed Ivee, the diligent young woman perpetually sweeping the store’s entrance. ”Beautiful day, isn’t it?"
Link offered her a warm smile, replying, “Morning, Ivee. It certainly is. Don’t wear yourself out, now.”
He couldn’t help but wonder what else occupied Ivee’s days, as she seemed to be always sweeping whenever he visited. Shaking off his curiosity, he stepped inside and greeted her father, Pruce, the store’s proprietor. In contrast to his perceptive daughter, Pruce often appeared oblivious to a customer’s arrival until confronted. With a fresh carton of eggs in hand, Link paid, bid farewell, and retreated to his home.
But after puttering around the house a bit, the confines of his dwelling began to feel suffocating. Link decided another visit to Zora’s Domain was in order. After ensuring his horse was fed and watered, he hoisted himself into the saddle and set off.
Link and his horse had traversed the route to Zora’s Domain countless times. She seemed to instinctively know the way, allowing Link to surrender the reins and simply savor the beauty of the surrounding countryside as they trotted along at a leisurely pace.
He passed the decaying remnants of a Lizalfos camp that used to be filled with electric arrow-wielding archers. He hated them, as they could cause serious injury or death to vulnerable Zoras. And he could recall sniping each of them with Ice Arrows, happy to be rid of them … until the Ganon’s next cursed Blood Moon revived them all. Thank Hylia, they were gone for good now.
When he arrived at the Great Zora Bridge, Link freed his horse to graze and then made his way into the surrounding hills. He was careful to avoid the Zora guards for now, as he had learned they would report his presence and assign someone to accompany him. He didn’t necessarily mind the company but felt it was an unnecessary intrusion on their time. And sometimes, he wanted to be alone, hopefully encouraging a flashback. He spent the rest of the day wandering about, praying something he noticed would trigger his memory. But as was usually the case, nothing happened.
So, following a fruitless day of exploration, Link resolved to return to the Domain for a hearty meal and a rejuvenating night’s rest at the Seabed Inn. Before heading to the inn, he made his way to the bustling Coral Reef market to acquire some fresh fish. By now, he was well known there, and some familiar faces in the market greeted him with warm smiles.
“Ah, Link, good evening,” beamed Clef, the shopkeeper. “As always, we have an extraordinary selection of the freshest fish for your enjoyment.”
Link laughed softly and replied, “You don’t have to coax me, I never doubt the quality of your catch, Clef. I’ll take a Sizzlefin Trout and a portion of Hylian rice, please."
Exchanging the items for 36 rupees, Clef wished him a pleasant meal. With his provisions in hand, Link ambled over to a nearby cooking spot close to the inn. As he busied himself with meal preparations, Kodah approached him.
“Hi Linny, are you planning to stay at the inn tonight?“ she inquired. ”There’s a message waiting for you with no return address. Let me fetch it for you."
As Link finished cooking, Kodah returned with the missive in hand. Link carried his steaming meal and the mysterious message to a secluded alcove overlooking the plaza, where he could dine in peace. Eager to uncover the contents of the letter, he opened the envelope as he savored his food. To his surprise, it was correspondence from Dr. Purah.
Link,
I’m directing this message to Zora’s Domain, as I surmise you frequent the area these days.
I have some news that I’m certain will bring you joy. However, fearing potential espionage, I’m reluctant to commit the details to paper. Please make haste to return to our lab at your earliest convenience.
Dr. Purah,
Director, Hateno Ancient Tech Lab
A swell of anticipation surged within Link. The message could only mean Purah had made progress on his proposal. Yet he knew it was too late, and he was far too weary to embark on the journey back to Hateno Village at that moment. Finishing his meal, he offered a prayer at Goddess Hylia’s statue for Zelda, his lost friends, and the hopeful success of his mission. As Hylia was the Goddess of Time, the prayer held particular resonance. Then he descended back to the plaza.
Bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, Prince Sidon stood before Mipha’s statue, immersed in contemplation. Each night, Sidon visited this sacred spot to reflect on the sister he cherished and longed for. Link understood the depth of their bond, often engaging in heartfelt conversations with Sidon. However, he chose not to intrude upon Sidon’s meditative moment tonight. Adhering to his own ritual, Link carefully placed a Blue Nightshade flower at the base of Mipha’s statue.
“Good night, Mipha,” he whispered softly. “You know I love you, and I miss you.”
After allowing himself a few more minutes to gaze upon the statue, Link retreated to the inn. With Dr. Purah’s tantalizing news fresh in his mind, he indulged in an 80-rupee waterbed and soon succumbed to slumber.
The journey back to Hateno Village was uneventful, and he was warmly welcomed upon arriving at the tech lab. Dr. Purah eagerly shared her groundbreaking discovery.
“Link, we have made astonishing strides in understanding Sheikah technology. While we have yet to unlock the secrets of the Temple of Time, we have successfully fashioned a pair of highly refined Timeshift Stones. Furthermore, we can now control the extent of the temporal shift with remarkable precision, thanks to the Sheikah Slate. As you may know from your own reading, a Timeshift Stone can transport an area surrounding it through time. Strike the stone once to journey into the past, and strike it again to return to the present. We’ve conducted tests, but I must emphasize the need for caution. Should you utilize the stone to traverse time, the consequences of your actions will manifest in the present upon your return, at least within the area governed by the stone’s influence,” Dr. Purah explained excitedly.
Link’s eyes widened with amazement. “This is truly a monumental breakthrough,” he exclaimed. “When can I make use of one of these stones?”
Before enlightening you on our accomplishments, we sought counsel from Her Majesty Queen Zelda. She graciously consented to allow you the use of one of the stones on the condition that you pledge to wield its power responsibly and prudently. Furthermore, she conveyed her thoughts regarding your intentions," Purah divulged, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
“I aim to employ it in Zora’s Domain,” Link explained.
“Queen Zelda had already surmised that and shared it with us, so allow me to lay out some fundamental restrictions. She mentioned your likely desire to converse with the late Zora Champion, Mipha. It is of utmost importance that you select a moment and location in which you are not already present, as any interaction with your past self could precipitate unforeseeable and potentially disastrous repercussions. Should you inadvertently find yourself in proximity to your past self, make haste in returning to the present. Do you grasp the gravity of this stipulation?”
“Yes, I comprehend its importance,” Link assured her, his expression solemn.
Undeterred, Purah pressed on, “Moreover, you must orchestrate the meeting in an isolated setting, devoid of other individuals or any likelihood of intrusion within the Timeshift Stone’s sphere of influence. It is crucial to minimize contact with others and avoid any meddling with the delicate fabric of the timeline.”
“I believe I have just the location in mind,” Link responded thoughtfully. “In bygone days, Vah Ruta was nestled in the heart of East Reservoir Lake, a place where Mipha frequently honed her skills in solitude. However, I wish to consult my journal before finalizing the precise time shift.”
In his quest to reclaim his memories, Link meticulously documented information gleaned from diaries, historical records, and dialogues with the Zoras in a leather-bound journal. While verbal exchanges offered invaluable insights, written accounts proved more trustworthy, as even the most lucid memories could not accurately recount day-by-day minutiae from over a hundred years prior.
Purah continued, her voice tinged with caution, “An additional directive that may prove more difficult to uphold is that you must refrain from divulging any details pertaining to someone’s future. Our understanding of time travel remains in its infancy. Should you, for example, forewarn Mipha of her impending doom, the consequences could spiral out of control, endangering both of you and the world at large. You may even inadvertently seal your own fate in an unforeseen tragedy. We must first deepen our comprehension of the ramifications before we tamper with the intricate web of our timeline.”
Link nodded in comprehension and acquiescence.
“Lastly,” Purah intoned, “exercise vigilance in remaining within the area influenced by the stone. Straying beyond its boundaries would result in your abrupt disappearance from the past and an unceremonious return to the present.”
“I shall heed your warning and stay within the Timeshift Stone’s purview,” Link affirmed.
“Very well,” Purah conceded. “We have only fashioned two such stones. Once you have determined the necessary time shift, I shall configure a stone using the enigmatic Sheikah Slate.”
Link took his leave to consult his notes at his dwelling. He needed to pinpoint a moment when he could be confident that Mipha would be practicing her skills in solitude at Vah Ruta and that he would be absent. Such a juncture would have transpired shortly before Ganon’s ominous resurgence. After poring over the available data, he returned to the laboratory.
“I have deduced that exactly eight days prior to the Great Calamity would be the most opportune moment,” Link declared. “I am certain that Mipha was engrossed in her training regimen during that period, and I am fairly confident that she would be honing her skills alone at Vah Ruta. Furthermore, I can attest to my own absence from the vicinity at that time.”
Purah, her movements deliberate and precise, reached across her cluttered desk to unveil a mesmerizing bluish stone, intricately engraved with a Sheikah emblem. Utilizing the Sheikah Slate, she input a series of commands. The stone briefly flashed an ethereal white before settling into a gentle, pulsating blue glow. She carefully handed the stone to Link.
“Thank you, Purah and Symin. Words cannot express the depth of my gratitude. Wish me luck,” Link voiced, his eyes glistening with determination and hope.
With that, he strode purposefully out of the laboratory, cradling the invaluable stone securely in his grasp, its soft glow a testament to the possibilities that lay ahead and the chance to reconnect with a cherished friend.
Prequel Chapter 4 - Mipha
Summary: Utilizing a Timeshift Stone, Link voyages 103 years into the past for a day with Mipha at East Reservoir Lake. Mipha senses something amiss but chooses to cherish the unexpected reunion.
Driven by anticipation, the trip back to Zora's Domain felt like an eternity. Link restrained himself from hurrying to the brink of fatigue. He opted for a less frequented path from Hateno Village through Nirvata Lake, Lanayru Bay, the Rutala River, and up the Rutala Dam to East Reservoir Lake.
Passing the vicinity of Purifier Lake, Link glanced westward and discerned the East Gate of Lanayru Road. He hadn't returned there in ages, deliberately avoiding it during his travels. It was the final place he had seen Mipha alive. Preoccupied with Zelda that day, ascending and descending Mount Lanayru, he missed the chance to converse with Mipha before the battle ensued. He pressed on towards Lanayru Bay.
Upon reaching East Reservoir Lake, Link headed for the northwest pier, which provided some cover and would be the natural location for an unexpected visit. The lake and reservoir were tranquil now, with Ruta relocated to a mountain peak and no one else in sight. Concealing the Timeshift Stone behind some pots near the pier's edge, Link hoped his sudden emergence would go unnoticed. He needed to feign this was just an unanticipated visit.
Aware that he was nearly three years older than he should be at this point in time, Link hoped Mipha would either not notice or attribute it to the stress of protecting Zelda. He also had the presence of mind not to wear his Zora Armor since he had not yet acquired it at that point. Instead, he donned his Champion's tunic, which he typically wore back then. He speculated whether the Timeshift Stone's influence would extend to Ruta on the lake, worrying that it might be impossible to attract Mipha's attention otherwise. Well, he would worry about that if it happened. Taking a deep breath, he offered a brief prayer to Hylia and activated the stone.
The transformation was immediate. The surroundings morphed, with the sun shining brightly in the clear sky. Mipha could be spotted atop Ruta's trunk in the distance. The Timeshift Stone had worked perfectly, and Link had indeed traveled over a century into the past. As he moved away from the stone and towards the pier's center, he found he couldn't control his emotions: tears welled up in his eyes.
Initially, Mipha faced the opposite direction, but soon she caught sight of Link on the pier. She called out and waved before lowering Ruta's trunk, diving elegantly into the water, and swimming his way. Leaping gracefully from the water, she landed on her feet, rushed towards him, and extended her arms for an embrace. He reciprocated hesitantly, and she stepped back.
"Your greeting wasn't the warmest, sweetheart, but this surprise visit is wonderful!" Mipha laughed. "I didn't expect to see you for another week since you were occupied guarding the Princess. It seems you couldn't resist being together after last week, and I'm so glad!"
Link realized he should have mentally and emotionally prepared himself better for this encounter. For Mipha, it was an unforeseen visit from someone she was used to seeing. But for him, it was the realization of a three-year dream he had prayed for but never thought possible. As a result, he had been overly eager to reunite with her, neglecting to brace himself for the moment.
Mipha's surprise intensified when Link failed to react to her comment about the previous week. He wasn't behaving as she had anticipated, and she couldn't pinpoint the reason. Her concern grew as she noticed the tears in his eyes.
"Link, is everything alright? Why the tears? Are you injured?” inquired Mipha.
"No, no, I'm alright, Mipha," Link replied, hastily wiping his eyes. "It's just that I've missed you. I've missed you deeply."
Seeing her in person surpassed his recollection, and the old, faded portrait on his wall failed to capture her true beauty. Her soft amber eyes, smooth red skin, and tender expression were captivating, igniting a yearning he hadn't felt in years. Overwhelmed by three years of solitude and increasingly vivid memories of her, he struggled to maintain his composure.
"Something is amiss," Mipha declared, shaking her head. "It warms my heart to know you've missed me, but you've never behaved this way. Has Princess Zelda done something to upset you? And why aren't you with her?"
“No, Zelda is well, as am I. I can't explain why I'm so emotional right now," Link confessed. "But I need you to understand how deeply I love you and long to be with you."
Mipha gazed at him, and he found it challenging to meet her eyes.
"I can sense you're withholding something," Mipha said with a shake of her head. "I know you too well, Link. But I won't pry. I'm too overjoyed to see you. And rest assured, my love for you is just as strong."
"Would you mind postponing your training work with Ruta so we can spend the day together? I'll need to leave once you return home. And, if it's alright, we should remain near the reservoir," Link proposed.
"Of course not! But don't you think it's high time you kissed me, darling? Or have you forgotten how in only a week?" Mipha teased.
Mipha reached out, and they embraced, sharing a series of tender kisses that sent thrills through his body. It had been over a century since he last kissed anyone, but some things one never forgets how to do.
"I suppose we could pause for lunch," Mipha suggested finally. "I have some fish you can cook here. I didn't anticipate company, and given your appetite, there might not be enough. Should I catch more?"
"No, no, whatever you have will suffice. I've also brought some food we can share," Link reassured her.
Link prepared his fish, and they enjoyed lunch together.
“Speaking of the Princess, how are your knightly responsibilities? Are things better between you and Zelda?" Mipha inquired.
Link recalled his days with Zelda, saying, "We're doing well, much improved since the beginning. Zelda can be challenging at times. She's frustrated by her inability to master the Sheikah Slate to unlock shrines and disheartened by her inaccessible sealing power. But I fulfill my duty and remain by her side when needed. She's in capable hands today, and I'm grateful for this opportunity to be with you."
Mipha leaned in and kissed him before playfully nipping at his shoulder.
"Ouch!" Link exclaimed.
"Just a little memento, so you will think of me when you return to your Hylian Princess," Mipha teased. "And I won't be healing that, either!"
She snuggled against him once more.
“You seem quite different from the last time we met. I know you love me; you eventually confessed it, but you were always restrained and unemotional. I'm thrilled that you're more open with your feelings now. Is it because we're engaged?"
"I can't really explain it," Link admitted. "But I'm overjoyed to be with you today."
"Well, let's relish the afternoon. You mentioned we need to stay close to the reservoir, but I assume swimming is allowed? Let's swim out to Ruta," Mipha suggested.
"Um, sure. Just not beyond it. That sounds lovely," Link agreed.
He noticed that the Timeshift Stone's range encompassed all of Ruta since it was absent from the lake in his current time.
Hand in hand, they approached the water's edge. Link removed his tunic and trousers, and Mipha playfully shoved him into the water. He recalled fondly how much he enjoyed swimming with her, although his swimming skills were meager compared to those of the Zoras. She delighted in circling him effortlessly as he struggled to swim forward.
“Swimming is good exercise for you, dearest,” said Mipha. “And if you’re marrying a Zora, you should expect to spend time in the water.”
“I guess I can put up with that to be with a Zora,” Link teased and laughed.
They swam a bit further, but being in the water with the person you love tended to stimulate a Zora’s desire and affection. Before they reached Ruta, Mipha swam over to him and embraced him as they floated together. He wrapped his arms around her, and she gazed into his eyes with a smile.
"Are you feeling better, happier now?" Mipha asked. "I know I am."
"Ecstatic beyond words," he replied. "When you look at me like this and smile, you're so stunning and beautiful. I love you deeply. I want to spend every moment with you."
"We will always be together, sweetheart, and my heart will forever be yours," Mipha declared.
They shared another tender kiss.
"Water truly invigorates me," Mipha laughed. "But I'm aware of your preference for land. Let's finish swimming out to Ruta."
Upon reaching Ruta, they entered and climbed onto its trunk. Mipha then elevated the trunk high above the lake, revealing a breathtaking view of the early afternoon sun glistening off the icy blue cliffs. They sat side by side, arms wrapped around each other, absorbing the stunning scenery. Link was mindful not to inadvertently say anything that might not fit the time period, so he remained mostly silent. Mipha, too, was content with the quiet companionship, occasionally sharing a smile or a kiss. Her smile was truly radiant! But before long, the day began to wane.
"There's a bed near the pier on the shore. Would you like to spend the night here? Or are you too anxious to return to your Hylian Princess?" she playfully teased, smiling.
“You know very well that nothing would delight me more than staying here with you," Link confessed. "I wish I could remain here forever."
"Father won't be concerned about me. I informed him I'd be staying overnight here with Ruta," Mipha revealed.
Together, they swam back to the reservoir’s edge, with Mipha helping by pulling him along. Link rekindled a fire and cooked the remaining food for a light dinner. They then sat side by side at the pier’s edge, their legs dangling in the water, holding hands and gazing at the stars above.
"It's beautiful here," Link remarked. "I recall... I mean, I adore coming to the domain. It's lively, spirited, and yet peaceful simultaneously. Even though I'm a Hylian, I feel so at ease and at home here."
"I hope soon this will be your true home, my love," Mipha said as she squeezed his hand. "Our home. I'm confident you'll be content here. Both of us will."
"I'll be happy wherever you are, my love," Link replied. "And I can't find happiness anywhere else."
He leaned over and kissed her. She smiled, the enchanting smile he adored so much.
"You've become such a romantic!" Mipha chuckled. "I never knew you had it in you. Even after knowing you for an extended period, you still surprised me. But it's a delightful surprise. I've yearned to hear you say you loved me. You can never say it too often."
"I do love you," Link admitted, "And I've come to realize just how deeply I love you. It simply took me longer than it should have."
They enjoyed a few more minutes of silence but were both growing weary.
"I wish you could sleep in the water," Mipha mused. "It's so much more comfortable. Water is calming, and you float so serenely."
"I'll try to learn," Link laughed. "I'm sure I can figure out how to rest with my head above water. You know I'll do anything to make you happy. Shall I attempt it tonight?"
"No, sweetheart,” Mipha laughed. "After we're married, there will be plenty of time. I can endure sleeping on land tonight. I want to hold you, feel you in my arms. That's more important to me right now."
They walked to the bed, nestled in each other's arms, shared a kiss, and promptly fell asleep. They awoke to another sunlit morning.
"It seems like another splendid day," Mipha observed, caressing Link's hair. "You slept well. I think you're becoming accustomed to being my fiancé."
"Comfortable isn't the term I'd use," Link laughed. "More ecstatic and overjoyed."
"How about a brief swim to start the day?” Mipha suggested.
They swam around the lake for a while, then returned to the pier. Link dried off and dressed. Mipha then approached and embraced him.
"I do need to head home now. I assume you can't accompany me?" Mipha asked.
"No, regrettably," Link replied.
The Timeshift Stone wouldn't extend that far, and Purah had instructed him to avoid unnecessary interactions with others.
"Well, thank you and Her Royal Highness for this unexpected and enigmatic visit. But for now, take care, and I'll see you at Lanayru Road in a week. By the way, where are you heading now?" Mipha inquired.
And now, as he bid farewell, he struggled to hold himself together. Who knew if he would ever see Mipha again? Would Purah ever get the Temple of Time to work? And even if she did, would he be allowed to use it? He longed to tell Mipha what was going to happen and spare her the pain and suffering of dying in Ruta. But Purah had cautioned him against tampering with events like that, as outcomes were too unpredictable. Things could turn out worse. She could be killed in battle some other way, and so could he. And he had promised not to tell her. He needed to keep his word and trust in Purah. How could he expect the Goddess of Time, Hylia, to hear his prayers if he was false to his word?
"I need to travel back to Hateno Village first. I'll be fine. I love you!" Link declared.
With that, they shared one last kiss.
"I love you too," Mipha responded.
She waved once to him on her way back home, then as he watched her recede, she suddenly vanished from view. She had reached the limit of the Timeshift Stone, which meant nothing to her in the past but removed her time from his sight.
Link paused and took a deep breath. A part of him, no doubt his heart, wanted to stay there. Perhaps he could carry the Timeshift Stone in his satchel and be with her again. Her kiss was so sweet! But his head told him that would never work and could ruin everything.
So, he returned to the Timeshift Stone, ensured no one was nearby, struck it once, and with a flash, everything reverted to his present. It was late in the day, however, so he decided to stay in Zora's Domain and spend the night at the inn. He felt more joy than he had in years, and his life had a purpose once again.
He stopped by the Hylia shrine and thanked the Goddess in his prayers for allowing him time with Mipha once again. He just hoped his past self wouldn't mess things up as he rubbed some tender teeth marks on his shoulder.
And then he realized he had forgotten to ask what her favorite flower was. He always left a Blue Nightshade flower beneath her statue whenever he visited Zora's Domain but wondered if it was the flower she liked best. He had asked Sidon and her father about it, but they didn't know. Sidon had been too young when he lost her, and her father had likely forgotten after all these years if he ever knew. Oh, well.
Prequel Chapter 5 - Hateno Village and Hyrule Castle
Summary: Link returns to Hateno Village and reports to Purah on his Timeshift stone experience. He then pays a visit to Hyrule Castle to thank Zelda, stopping for a short visit with Impa on the way.
Link awoke the next morning and began his journey back to Hateno Village. He was anxious to tell Purah what had happened in hopes it would further her research. So far, he hadn’t noticed anything different in the present, except his sore shoulder, so with luck, the timeline was still intact, and no harm was done.
He returned to his house, freshened up, switched into the Zora armor, and headed toward the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. Purah and Symin again received him warmly.
“So, Link, tell us how the Timeshift Stone worked out for you,” said Purah.
“It worked perfectly as far as I can tell,” said Link. “Mipha and I were alone the whole time we were together on East Reservoir Lake. There were no interruptions by anyone else. I had a little problem controlling my emotions at the outset, and Mipha sensed things were not quite right. But in the end, she accepted me, and we got along as well as we used to.”
“Given your memory issues, how do you know she accepted you as well as she used to?” asked Purah.
At this question, Link blushed red and seemed at a loss for words. Purah noticed his embarrassment.
“Never mind, I think I understand,” she said, laughing. “You don’t need to elaborate. But this is encouraging news, and I think it means we are on the right track. Getting the Temple of Time to work is, in principle, like turning it into a giant Timeshift Stone that encompasses all of Hyrule in its range. Not to say that it is easy, but that’s the concept at least.”
“So, what happens next?” Link asked.
“For you, nothing,” Purah answered. “For us, it means further work on understanding this technology. By the way, I have used the connection between the Sheikah Slate and the Sheikah Towers scattered around Hyrule to check for any timeline anomalies and am pleased to say I have not detected any. Thus, it appears your visit to the past did not have any significant effect on the present. We will let you know when we have something new to report.”
He could tell they were eager to resume work, so he took his leave. He would have to wait again. But at least he had some new memories to enjoy. After sleeping overnight at his house, he awoke in an optimistic mood and felt he owed Zelda his thanks for her permission to use the Timeshift Stone. He hadn’t visited her in almost a month anyway, so this seemed like as good a time as any. Epona was stabled right outside his house, and after feeding and watering her, he saddled up and began the ride to Hyrule Castle.
As usual on his rides from Hateno Village to Hyrule Castle, he would break his trip at Kakariko Village to rest Epona and get something to eat. He would usually check in on Impa as well if she weren’t busy. He owed Impa so much for all her guidance and assistance when he first awoke memoryless from the shrine. It was only the awkwardness with Paya that made him uncomfortable.
The ride was pleasant enough as the weather was warm and sunny, with no hint of rain. The roads were safe now, and Link relaxed in the saddle, letting Epona steer her way along at a modest pace and giving her a gentle pat of approval and affection now and then. There was no need to hurry.
Overall he thought the visit with Mipha had gone very well, but he admonished himself again for not taking more time to think it through. He was all too eager and hadn’t prepared himself well enough. As usual, he had rushed ahead, recklessly perhaps, his bias being toward action. But he had learned in dealing with enemies that planning was vitally important. It was important in dealing with friends as well.
He should have done a better job keeping his emotions to himself. He nearly ruined the visit. Thank Hylia Mipha had let it all pass in the interest of being together. But after all this time thinking about her, trying every day to remember more about her, and falling back in love with her, it was a lot to ask. He usually worked hard not to show them, but he did have feelings after all.
When he reached Kakariko Village, he dismounted and left Epona to graze while he continued into town. He strolled over to Impa’s house first. There were still two guards on duty. Impa was a Yiga Clan target, though nothing much had been seen of any Yiga in quite some time. Both guards recognized him.
“Master Link, welcome! Lady Impa gave us instructions to admit you whenever you’re here, so please go right on in.”
“Thank you, Cado,” said Link.
Link went up the steps and knocked on the door. He heard Impa’s voice telling him to come in.
“Link, this is a nice surprise,” said Impa. “Have you eaten yet? Paya and I were just about to have lunch. It’s only some rice and fish, but you are most welcome. We have enough for three.”
“Thank you, Impa. I would like that,” said Link. “And hello, Paya. It’s nice to see you.”
“Hello, Master Link,” said Paya. “It’s nice to see you, too.”
He noticed Paya had gotten over her stuttering in the past two years. Good for her! Paya handed Impa and him a bowl of rice and fish along with a set of chopsticks, and he thanked her. Then they sat down near Impa, and Paya served them both tea, then herself.
“What brings you here, Link,” said Impa.
“Just stopping on the way to the castle,” said Link. “How are both of you?”
“I’m getting ancient,” said Impa. “If my sister Purah ever perfects that rune of hers, maybe I’ll consider trying it.”
“I am well as always, Master Link,” said Paya. “Thank you for asking.”
“Speaking of my sister, she told me some of what has been happening,” said Impa. “So, you traveled back in time to see the Zora Champion Mipha.”
“News certainly travels fast!” said Link. “Yes, I was able to see her by using a Timeshift Stone.”
“You certainly are persistent,” said Impa. “That’s your nature, I know. But I worry about Purah and her work, and so should you! She can be a bit reckless sometimes. I warned her again about the danger of time travel, and she promised me she would be cautious. I gather you cannot yet find it in your heart to move on and accept all that happened?”
“I’m sorry, but no, I can’t,” said Link. “Not unless I know I’ve tried everything, and Dr. Purah says there is no hope. But it’s not just for me. If our plan works, all of Hyrule will be better off.”
“I pray your heart will find peace, Master Link,” said Paya. “You have done so much for all of us. You deserve now to live your life in happiness. I pray you will find that happiness soon.”
“Thank you, Paya,” said Link. “I appreciate your prayers and always have. It is kind of you to care what happens to me. And I hope this prayer of yours is answered as well as were your prayers for our success.”
They spoke some more of what had been happening. When the meal was finished, it was time to leave.
“Give my best wishes to Her Majesty,” said Impa. “And, Link, I know I’ve said this before, but keep your hopes in check. It is fine to dream of wishes coming true, and we all do that. But it is wise also to consider that not all wishes do come true in life. Think of all you have and do not dream your life away.”
“And be well Master Link,” said Paya.
“Thank you both,” said Link. “I understand, Impa. And I will say hello for you.”
He found Epona, and they continued toward Hyrule Castle. Impa hadn’t been too hard on him this time. She used to be much more forceful about the need to move on from his obsession with the past. Perhaps the fact Purah was making progress on time travel had tempered her outlook.
When he reached the castle, he was admitted at once and shown to a private room while Her Majesty was informed he had arrived. A few minutes later, Zelda entered the room. He dropped to one knee. He had a deep respect for the Hyrule Royal family, and he never wanted to presume upon their friendship to ignore that.
“Thank you, Link, for being so respectful, but please rise,” said Zelda. “And now that you’ve shown the proper respect, come here and hug me. I missed you! And if you don’t call me Zelda, I’m going to start collecting that fine I threatened you with!”
Link rose went over to her, and they hugged each other.
“It’s good to see you, Zelda,” said Link. “You’re looking very well. Almost regal, I would say.”
“Almost?” Zelda laughed. “Well, I’m still working on it. Come, let’s sit down and talk. I have to thank you for arriving when you did. It was a good excuse to leave a rather boring meeting.”
“I do know you’re busy Your, uh, Zelda, and I appreciate you making time for me,” said Link as they sat down. “I especially wanted to thank you for permitting me to use Purah’s Timeshift Stone. And Impa says hello.”
“I know how much Mipha meant, I mean means, to you, Link,” said Zelda. “You have made that clear. And I don’t know if Dr. Purah will ever accomplish what she’s working on and convince us of its merits. I hoped your visit with Mipha would bring you some comfort and happiness and maybe even some closure. I still hope you can move on as the rest of us have. I’m only speaking to you as a friend now who cares for your well-being. Frankly, I had misgivings about allowing you to use the stone. I was afraid it would only serve to make matters worse, make it harder for you to move on. But in the end, I felt that no matter what, it would bring you happiness, and you deserve some happiness after all you’ve been through. We all owe you so much, Link. So, I could not deny you that.”
“Thank you again,” said Link. “It did bring me happiness. But it did also give me hope.”
“Can you tell me what happened on your visit?” said Zelda. “Purah sent me a report that all had gone well, but no actual details.”
“Well, um, I met Mipha at Ruta on East Reservoir Lake, and we talked and had lunch and swam around a bit,” said Link.
“That’s it?” said Zelda after waiting for Link to continue.
“Oh, Mipha also said to thank you for letting me visit,” said Link. “So, technically, I’m doing that now, though she meant the ‘you’ of her time, of course.”
“Yes, of course. Please go on,” said Zelda after waiting some more.
Link started turning red.
“We did get a little personal, Zelda. I feel funny talking about it with you.”
“A little personal?” said Zelda. “I would imagine you behaved like two people in love. You truly have a way with words sometimes! And what’s wrong with your shoulder? You keep rubbing it. Are you hurt?”
“Oh, um, no, it’s nothing, Zelda.”
He had absentmindedly been rubbing where Mipha had given him her playful nip. It was something to remember her by, she said, the next time he returned to his Hylian Princess. And 103 years later, it was doing just that.
“It can’t be nothing. It obviously bothers you,” said Zelda. “Let me take a look. I insist.”
Link pushed aside his tunic so Zelda could see the bruise. It wasn’t bad, just a bit red. The skin wasn’t broken. But the imprint on the skin looked like teeth marks.
“It’s not too bad,” said Zelda as she examined it. “But it looks like a bite. Did something attack you, a Keese perhaps? The size of the bite is quite large. I can’t imagine you not realizing what happened.”
“I wasn’t attacked exactly. It’s not important, Zelda. But yes, we behaved like two people in love,” said Link.
“I see,” said Zelda with a smile. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to embarrass you by prying. I know you’ve been spending a great deal of time trying to recover memories. I viewed your visit with her as a chance to learn more about you and her, and it succeeded in doing so.”
“And I thank you for that,” said Link. “No need to apologize. I just find it difficult to talk about.”
“Then let’s move on,” said Zelda. “You’re having dinner with me here and staying overnight in one of the guest rooms. I want to tell you about all the restoration work that’s going on, and I want to learn all you’ve seen in your travels. Let’s have a good time together, as we used to years ago. Pretend we’re together at one of those stables we used to stay at, sitting around the fire, eating Hylia knows what, and talking late into the night. That’s the ‘you’ I remember best and grew close to. I’m hoping the company and conversation will be like old times. But I promise the food will be better. And don’t even think about turning me down!”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” laughed Link. “I miss those days, too, though I think we both tend to remember the good times and not all our worries. But yes, your appointed knight could use some fun conversation with his other Princess. And since when have I ever turned down a good meal?”
The dinner was delicious. Zelda brought him up to date on all the construction going on, and he told her of his travels. People were pleased with Zelda as ruler, and he let her know that. Then, as it got later, they started to reminisce about their travels together, both before and after Ganon’s defeat.
“I’m sorry you didn’t see the stable owner’s face, Lawdon, just after our victory when I got you a horse from Wetland Stable for our ride to Kakariko Village,” laughed Link. “He noticed you weren’t dressed for riding and asked who you were. I didn’t know what else to say other than you were the Princess of Hyrule. His jaw dropped in amazement, and then he assumed I was joking and got angry. I wonder if he realized later, I was telling the truth? Do you remember that?”
“I remember you got me a nice white horse,” said Zelda. “But it was fun sharing a horse with you until we reached the stable. It brought us closer after a hundred years apart. I didn’t mind. Do you remember the time we stayed at Gerudo Canyon Stable, and the landlord thought you were my servant? I still feel bad about that. I was still a bit resentful of you back then.”
“I remember, but I forgive you,” laughed Link. “You gave me the hardest time near Gerudo Town, sneaking off. I was terrified something would happen to you.”
“You cared for me that much?” said Zelda.
“No, I was just worried about all the trouble I would be in with your father back at the castle,” teased Link, laughing.
“Very funny,” laughed Zelda. “I know better. You were always there for me. I’ll never forget that.”
Finally, it was getting late. Link hugged Zelda and wished her goodnight. He wouldn’t see her in the morning and would be heading home.
“Be well, Link,” said Zelda. “And return soon. I always feel better after seeing you.”
“I will,” said Link. “You’re an extraordinary person in my life, and I’ll never forget that either.”
Then he went to his room and slept. The next morning, he rode home but did not stop to see Impa on the way.
Prequel Chapter 6 - Zora’s Domain
Summary: Link continues with life as he hopes Dr. Purah will uncover the secrets to the Temple of Time. He makes another visit to Zora’s Domain.
Link had been home for a few days after his trip to Hyrule Castle and had filled in his journal with everything that had happened. He cleaned his house and tended to the grounds, keeping everything neat and clean.
His meeting in the past with Mipha occupied a good deal of his mind since he returned home, and he kept blaming himself for not handling it better. He had let his emotions get the better of him and nearly ruined everything! Mipha clearly realized something was wrong. And what if she had pressed him for an explanation? To refuse to answer her would only make her angry and ruin the only chance he had to be with her, to throw away an opportunity beyond all his hopes and dreams over the past three years. But to tell her was even worse! Purah had said it could ruin everything by unpredictably changing the past. Fortunately, Mipha was as eager as he was to enjoy their unexpected day together and let it pass. He was very fortunate.
By the fifth day back at Hateno Village, he was feeling restless again. He used his house to settle himself after traveling and to catch up on his writing. It was a place to relax. But now, he felt the urge to travel again.
The question was where, and he weighed his options.
Hyrule Castle was out since he was just there. Rito Village was quite far, quite cold, and he didn’t know anyone very well there. Teba and the Elder would welcome him out of courtesy for all he had done for them, but they weren’t friends. Goron City was brutally hot and about the same situation, though he enjoyed Yunobo’s youthful enthusiasm. Gerudo Town was something else! He still had to sneak in disguised as a woman. They wouldn’t even make an exception in his case! Chief Riju was growing up and a bit more than a child now, though still quite young. She was very gracious toward him and said he was always welcome. But it was uncomfortable hiding behind a veil all day, especially at meals. And that was a pretty long journey as well.
So, as was often the case, he ended up selecting Zora’s Domain. It was close, and he had friends there. And he never tired of visiting it.
The next day he put on his Zora armor and headed off to Zora’s Domain again. He had been there so many times that Epona knew the way by heart. He sometimes wondered if Epona missed all the adventuring he had done earlier. At least there was more variety for her back then. But he took good care of her, and she was as loyal a horse as you could ask for. He had rested Epona several times along the way, and the final part of the journey to the Domain was long and winding. When he finally left Epona and walked the rest of the way into the Domain, it was early evening.
His first stop was always Mipha’s statue. As he approached, he saw Prince Sidon standing there, his gaze fixed upon Mipha’s sculpture. Sidon didn’t notice him at first, and Link was reluctant to interrupt him. Finally, Sidon saw him.
“Oh! It’s you, Link,” said Sidon, turning to Link standing next to him. “I was lost in thought and didn’t see you. Have you been here long?”
“Sorry, did I startle you? No, I only just arrived,” said Link.
Children had already made their way to the slumber pools for the night, and the plaza was quiet now.
Link knelt on one knee and placed a Blue Nightshade flower at the base of her statue. He closed his eyes and whispered, “I love you, Mipha.” Then he stood up and gazed at her figure again, lost in thought.
Sidon remained silent, as there was no reason to intrude upon Link’s thoughts. He had seen Link perform this brief ritual before, as he did this whenever he returned to the Domain.
Link finally broke the silence.
“They say time heals all wounds, Sidon, but it’s not true, not for me,” said Link as he continued to look up at her image, chiseled in stone.
Sidon remained quiet.
“For me, it’s just the opposite,” said Link. “The more time passes, the more my mind heals, and my memory recovers. And the more I remember of her. I can’t remember much as there are still too many holes in my mind. But I recall some of our time together. I remember the places we went, the things we did, and how happy we were together. I remember the warmth in her eyes, the softness of her smile, the joy of her laugh. My curse is to feel her loss more deeply with each new memory I recover.”
“I cannot imagine how hard that must be for you,” said Sidon. “To have the memory of your time with my sister return piece by piece. I wish there were some way of helping you, but the harm to your mind from the shrine you told me of must have been very great. I imagine any recovery will be long and difficult.”
“And it’s not just memories. There are dreams too, Sidon,” Link continued. “I sometimes dream of her, even several days in a row. And they’re so true to life, so convincing! It’s as if she is with me, and we are together again. We swim, we take walks, we hold hands, we laugh, we kiss. I don’t know if these things happened the way I dreamed them, or my longing for her drove my mind to invent them. But when I awaken, having just imagined being together, the hurt is all the greater for what my heart tells me just happened, even though my head tells me it was just a dream.”
“Why do you think you have these dreams?” said Sidon.
“I don’t know,” said Link. “Some would say my dreams were her spirit reaching out to mine, that we are closer to the spirit world when we sleep. But when last I spoke to her spirit, she was urging me to move on with my life. So, I think it unlikely she would cause me to grow more attached to her. Another thought I had is that it is due to her healing power, the power that she gave me for a time. All the Champion spirits gave me their powers, but hers was different. The others were powers I had to invoke. Hers just stayed within me and protected me from harm when I needed it. The powers the others gave me were more like giving me something and then leaving me to use it. Hers was as though she was within me somehow, that we were bonded together. I think it may have permanently affected me somehow.”
“The only comfort I can offer is talking about her,” said Sidon.
They both gazed silently at Mipha’s statue for another moment.
“Well, I am tired from my travels,” said Link. “It’s time to bed down at the inn. Good night, Sidon.”
“Good night, Link,” said Sidon.
Link made the short walk to the Seabed Inn. As usual, Kodah was on duty as a greeter while her husband, Kayden, handled the desk.
“Back again, Linny?” said Kodah as he approached the inn. “You’re certainly one of our best customers! And you’re always welcome here.”
“Hi Kodah,” said Link. “Do I qualify for a discount yet?”
“Oh, come on, being so famous, and with all the Rupees you collect, I know you can afford a bed for the night!” laughed Kodah. “I’ll arrange it with my husband, and you don’t need to register. Are you staying long?”
“I don’t know yet,” said Link. “I get restless when I’m home, and then I miss some company. And, besides Zelda, the only friends I have are here. So, it depends on how much time they have for me. How are you and the family?”
“Well,” said Kodah. “I’m not sure I told you last time you were here, but our daughter, Finley, finally had her growth spurt a year or so ago. She had been getting very depressed that it took so long. And she finally moved on from her Hylian ‘prince,’ thank Nayru. Nothing against Hylians, of course, but we were not impressed with her pen pal.”
“I understand,” said Link. “He was a bit of a wimp, but I thought he might improve himself. I guess he didn’t.”
“So, still no one special in your life yet?” said Kodah. “My friends are all married now, so I don’t know anyone to introduce you to. Haven’t you met a Hylian either? Or a Gerudo?”
“No, nobody,” said Link. “I’m not looking for a relationship at the moment. The Gerudo I’ve met think I’m too scrawny for them, anyway. I still have strong feelings for Mipha. I know it sounds silly since it’s been 103 years. But you know all this from our past conversations. Nothing has changed.”
“Yes, you’re right,” said Kodah. “I just keep hoping for your sake you will get some closure and move on. I do feel bad for you. You’re a nice person, and you deserved better in life. But of course, so did Lady Mipha. Anyway, enjoy your visit.”
Link slept well and had no dreams he remembered that night. The next morning after breakfast, he wandered back to the plaza. There were the usual people shopping and children running around splashing in the fountain or playing. He didn’t see anyone he knew, at least at first. But then he heard a voice he recognized.
“Well, well,” said Gaddison. “If it isn’t the Hylian hero. Back again? You really do like it here, don’t you?”
“Yes, I actually do,” laughed Link, turning around to see her. “This should have been my home. How are you, Heroine?”
“Very well,” laughed Gaddison. “I’m impressed you still remember my brigade title. I’m enjoying being a guard and serving under our captain, Bazz. It reminds me of our old gang. And with monsters gone now, the work is much easier. Are you still trying to remember your past?”
“Yes, as usual,” said Link. “I know it sounds pointless.”
“No, I understand,” said Gaddison. “It’s been hard on you, I know. Just remember you have friends here if you need us. We’re always willing to spend time with you if you get lonely. Just expect some good-natured teasing now and then.”
“I will,” said Link. “And I’m getting used to all the teasing. We did have a lot of fun together as kids, didn’t we?”
“Yes, and I like it when we get together and reminisce,” said Gaddison. “I hope you can join all of us next time.”
“I would like that,” said Link.
Just then, a guard approached them.
“Excuse me, Master Link, His Majesty would like to speak with you as soon as you are available,” said the guard.
“I can come now,” said Link. “Bye, Gaddison.”
The guard escorted him to the throne room, and both Sidon and King Dorephan were there.
“Ah, Link,” said King Dorephan. “Sidon told me you were here, and I wanted to make sure I saw you, and you felt welcome. You know I will always make time for you. Besides all you did for the Domain, you are a special person to our family.”
“Thank you,” said Link. “You always make me feel welcome, though I fear I’m wearing it out by visiting so often.”
“Nonsense!” said King Dorephan. “You are always welcome here as often as you want.”
They invited him to join them for lunch, and they talked some more.
“I hope you don’t mind me coming here and speaking about Mipha with you,” said Link. “I am not sure whether I am opening old wounds for you or not.”
“You are not opening old wounds, Link, for my dear Mipha’s loss is a wound that never closed,” said King Dorephan. “I miss her and think of her often. But speaking with you, the one she loved so much, makes me feel better, especially knowing that you loved her too and still care so much for her.”
“And that goes for me as well,” said Sidon. “The three of us share a love for my sister, and I draw comfort when we are together.”
Afterward, he spent a couple of more days at the Domain, then started feeling guilty taking up so much of people’s time. It was time to head back home.
This was the pattern of his life now: visits to Hyrule Castle, Kakariko Village, and Zora’s Domain, interspersed with days at home updating his journal and taking care of his house.
Zelda, Impa, and the others were right. He couldn’t live this way forever. But he still had hopes that Purah and Robbie would make progress. And until he knew for sure they couldn’t, he would not give up. He was too attached to Mipha now, and stubbornness was one of his traits.
Prequel Chapter 7 - Time Travel Planning
Summary: The secret to the Temple of Time is discovered, and Queen Zelda heads a meeting with Link, Purah, and Robbie to discuss their plans. They struggle with a means of convincing a skeptical audience in the past that a Link who claims to be from the future but lacks his memory is credible. Final plans are set.
It was almost a year before Dr. Purah next sent him a message to meet at the Lab. He realized Purah had difficulty leaving the Lab since she looked like a little girl, so meetings with her always took place there. He was hopeful she had some encouraging news for him.
He arrived at the Lab and found a seat. Purah came quickly to the point.
“We have some good news. A while back, the Gerudo recovered some important information from the Yiga Clan hideout where some ancient Sheikah documents had been hidden. We are now able to use the Temple of Time. But we need to meet with Queen Zelda and discuss whether we should and, if so, how. Our research indicates that it is only the Hyrule Hero with the Master Sword and those in his company who can pass through time, and only they will retain any memory of the timeline we are in today. In other words, were you to go back in time and change things, then a new timeline would be created that would branch off and be different from the one we are in now. Only you would retain some memory of the alternate time we live in today, but it would be only a memory. And were you to tell anyone about the present time as it is today, they would consider it just a story of what might have been had things been different. The people in Hyrule would know nothing of it. As far as they would be concerned, it never happened. Do you understand all this, Link?” Purah asked.
“Yes, I think so,” Link answered.
This was even more reason to write down as much as possible since he was hopeful his notes would survive with him.
Purah went on, “There is another difference between the Temple of Time and the Timeshift Stones. There will only be one ”you“ in this scenario. When you go back in time, you essentially take the place of the ”you" that had existed then, though you will retain your memories of today, limited though some of them are.”
“I understand,” said Link.
“Queen Zelda and Robbie have agreed to meet here in one week to discuss. You, of course, need to be here as well. We thought it best to avoid too much notice of our goings-on, so the meeting will be secret. Please think about everything and be prepared to discuss next time,” Purah told him.
He said goodbye and headed home. There was indeed much to think about.
The meeting at the Hateno Ancient Tech lab took place as scheduled. Queen Zelda came secretly, mostly traveling by night. Robbie, along with his wife and research assistant, Jerrin, came as well. Symin had made some effort to clean up the Lab so everyone could find a place to sit. Purah led off the discussion.
“Welcome Your Majesty and everyone else to what is probably the most important meeting in our lives. Thanks to the help of Dr. Robbie, we have been able to restore the Temple of Time’s primary function,” said Purah. “Now, you may well ask how we know that since we haven’t all traveled off to a new timeline. We know it because of the readings we can detect from the Temple on the Sheikah Slate and because we tested it. It turns out the Sheikah Slate can be programmed to control the duration of time travel. We planted a small tree in the Temple and sent it back a year. Immediately after activating the device, the tree was a year older. We performed some other experiments and are confident time travel will work. So, the question is, what should we do? If there is no objection, I have asked Link to speak next to outline his plan.”
“Your Majesty and attendees,” said Link, “As you know, I am not a gifted speaker by any means, so I will come straight to the point. My proposal is that I travel back in time to before the Great Calamity, and with the benefit of the hindsight we have gained, alert everyone to Ganon’s plans. In that way, we could save the Champions from defeat at the hands of Ganon’s blight creatures and achieve a much quicker victory over Ganon along the lines of our original plan. Hyrule would not suffer the devastation it did, and many lives would be saved.”
Queen Zelda spoke up next.
“That is certainly an admirable outcome,” said Zelda. “But can we be sure of achieving it? For one thing, will your memory remain intact when you go back in time? That seems key to the success of your plan.”
“My research indicates it is very likely Link’s memory, such as it is, will be retained. However, we also intend to include some written information with Link that will survive his time travel and which he can refer to if needed. I was also planning to send back some research we have conducted to prevent Guardians from being taken over and some of my other research notes on my anti-aging rune. I hope that my notes will prove useful to the Purah of that period.”
“That makes good sense,” said Zelda. “So, one way or the other, Link will have information on Ganon’s attack plans. How certain are we that your Guardian defense process will work?”
“We cannot be certain it will work since there is no practical way of testing it against an attack as strong as Ganon’s. But we have tested it as well as we could.”
“Is that critical to the success of Link’s mission?” asked Zelda.
“I don’t think so,” said Link. “For the sake of argument, assume the defense process Dr. Purah and Dr. Robbie developed fails. Then it becomes our top priority to defeat Ganon as quickly as possible. With the Champions forewarned about the corruption of their Divine Beasts, they will not be trapped inside and killed. I will still have the Master Sword at that point. Working with each Champion, we can recapture each Divine Beast one by one more easily than I could do it by myself. Then we tackle Ganon. There will be some destruction but not on the scale we lived through last time.”
“Alright,” said Zelda. “So, the plan is to hope the Guardian defense process works but be prepared if it doesn’t. But I have another question. I am trying to imagine how the other Champions or I would react if a person we all know, like Link, suddenly declares he is not who we think he is but from the future. Moreover, this person suddenly can’t remember many things. I think our first inclination would be to believe he suffered a head injury of some kind and was delusional. I don’t think we would believe him. Can anyone think of a way to convince everyone of the truth?”
No one spoke for a few minutes. Then Robbie spoke.
“That’s an excellent question, Your Majesty,” said Robbie. “As you said, we have two problems. The first is that Link’s actual memory is lacking in many areas. So, compared to the Link of that period, it will appear he suffered some mental injury. And that leads to the second problem. We need Link to be able to present some information to Princess Zelda and the Champions that they would already know to be true, but Link could not have otherwise known. That is tricky. It can’t be anything that hasn’t happened yet in their timeline but can’t be something Link could have known either. I can’t think of anything in that category.”
No one else could either. They couldn’t reach a decision, and everyone decided to sleep on things and discuss with a fresh mind in the morning. After a night’s rest, the meeting resumed the next morning.
“I have given some more thought as to how Link might be able to convince his audience of his story’s truth,” said Zelda. “One item of information that might help is Link’s knowledge of what is in my and the other Champions’ diaries. The diary entries had already been made by then, but Link would have had no way of knowing their contents at that time.”
At this, Link shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Your Majesty, I’m sorry about that. I wasn’t just nosy: I thought anything I learned from those diaries could be helpful to my mission.”
There was an element of truth in that, if not perhaps the whole truth.
“I have no hard feelings about your reading my diary, and I don’t think three of the Champions in the past or I will back then either. But I don’t envy you your conversation with Mipha,” said Zelda with a laugh.
“Oh,” Link said, a small knot in his stomach forming. Now he was a bit sorry he hadn’t followed her spirit’s wishes when Mipha said: “Don’t you dare read it!”
“Anyway, back to the main point,” said Zelda. “I think knowledge of their diaries plus whatever else Link can remember would be enough to convince me and the others back then that being cautious about the Guardians and Divine Beasts was wise. So, let’s assume Link can convince everyone. What are the next steps?”
“I think the plan will be fairly clear at that point, as I outlined yesterday,” said Link. “We can try Purah’s defense process. If that works, great. If not, I will join the other Champions in recapturing the Divine Beasts. Together we can make quick work of those disgusting blight creatures. And Mipha will help Princess Zelda understand how to access her sealing power. With the Champions in control of their Divine Beasts, Princess Zelda and I will then tackle Ganon as quickly as possible.”
Robbie then spoke up. “Let’s discuss this a bit more. Dr. Purah, I would like your opinion on a point I find unclear. Will Link’s combat skills still be good enough when he travels to the past? Will he be physically the same as he was then, or instead as he is today? Will only his memory be intact?”
“Based on my research, Link should be physically as he was then,” said Purah. “But, Link, it wouldn’t hurt to be sure and brush up on your combat skills in the interim, just in case. How long would you need to get back up to form?”
“Not very long,” Link said. “I have been trying to keep myself in shape anyway. I think two weeks of intense training would put me back in top form.” He planned to do his best to make sure his skills were as good as ever.
“The next point we need to consider,” said Robbie, “is at what point in the past Link should be sent. I have some thoughts on this matter. Clearly, it needs to be enough time before the Great Calamity to warn Princess Zelda and the Champions and prepare the new strategy. But I am also concerned about introducing unintended changes to the timeline if Link travels back too much further. The more interaction he has with people there, the more chance of something going wrong. So, I would like him to be sent as close to the date of the Great Calamity as possible.”
“Would one week be sufficient, do you think?” asked Purah.
“I think so,” said Link. “I will meet with Princess Zelda to convene a meeting of the Champions as soon as I get there. That should be enough time to convene a meeting and make new plans.”
“One last point,” said Dr. Purah. “Unlike the Timeshift Stone process, when Link goes back in time, he will take the place of the Link of that period, not create a duplicate of himself. The Link of that period will, in essence, disappear. Therefore, it would be desirable for no one to witness that, so I recommend Link be sent back late at night when the Link of the past is likely alone and asleep.”
Finally, they reached a decision. He would arrive late in the evening at the Temple of Time one week before the Great Calamity. After two weeks of intense combat training, he was ready and eager to go.
Prequel Chapter 8 - Arrival in The Past
Summary: Link arrives in the past, and Princess Zelda convenes a meeting of all the Champions to discuss what to do in light of this startling turn of events. Mipha struggles with her feelings as she realizes the Link she knew and loved is gone, replaced by a Link who remembers very little of her.
Link felt himself re-materialize in the Temple of Time near the statue of Goddess Hylia. The sensation of time travel had not been as unsettling as he had feared. It felt quite similar to using the Sheikah Slate to journey between travel gates, something he had grown quite accustomed to in his past.
As Purah had hoped, the Temple was silent and empty, nobody saw him appear out of nowhere. And no light shone through the windows, the only illumination coming from a pair of lamps burning on either side of the Goddess statue. So, clearly, it was nighttime.
But had he successfully traveled to the past? The temple was undamaged, of course, but was it the original temple from before the Calamity or the restored one from much afterward? A brief look around helped convince him it was the original, as all the masonry was old.
“It looks like it worked,” Link muttered to himself with a sigh of relief, then knelt before Hylia’s statue and said a brief prayer of thanks.
He had concealed his concerns about the process actually working out of respect for Purah and Robbie, who were both brilliant scientists. But not all of Purah’s experiments turned out as she expected, so perhaps some concern was understandable.
Link surmised his alternate self, wherever he was, had just vanished from Hyrule. He likely had been alone in his house at Hateno Village so that nobody would notice. Anyway, nothing could be done until morning, so he lit a fire and settled in for the night. He wasn’t sure he could sleep, but he knew he needed to rest.
The following morning dawned with fair weather, and he set out at once for Hyrule Castle. His first stop was Gatepost Town, situated right outside the gate to the Great Plateau. Most of the townsfolk were not up yet, but he stopped to speak with one of the guards on duty.
“Good morning. I’m hoping I can borrow a horse,” said Link. “I have an urgent meeting at Hyrule Castle.”
The response astonished him, but then he realized it probably shouldn’t have.
“Yes, of course, Captain, right away,” said the guard, and he signaled to his companion.
“Go fetch my horse for Captain Link, and hurry,” said the first guard, and the second rushed off.
“Did something happen to your own horse, Sir? I’ve seen you riding her, and she is such a fine-looking animal!”
“Oh, um, we got separated, and my meeting is too urgent to delay finding her,” said Link. “Forgive me, but what is your name? I’ll leave your horse at the castle with instructions to return it to you.”
“Sergeant Rollin, Sir, and that will be fine,” said Rollin as the other guard returned with a horse.
Link gave the horse an apple he was carrying, then thanked both guards and galloped off. As he rode toward the castle it was even clearer this was the distant past, for Hyrule was thriving and undamaged. He passed fellow riders on the road, and the villages he passed were full of activity. It was heartwarming to see, and yet the crush of responsibility weighed on his mind. For unless he succeeded, all of this would be destroyed in less than a week. He needed to convince Zelda and the others what would happen.
It was mid-morning by the time he arrived at the castle and requested a private audience with Princess Zelda. Again, being known as her knight attendant no doubt made meeting with her easier.
“Right this way, Sir,” said a guard who accompanied him. “Her Highness is in her study.”
When they arrived, Link thanked the guard and knocked on the door.
“Is that you, Father?” Link heard a voice he recognized at once as Zelda’s.
She opened the door and then looked at him in surprise.
“Link! What a delightful surprise! I thought I urged you to take some time off, as I wouldn’t require your company until later this week,” Zelda remarked.
For a moment, Link stared at her in disbelief. She was a sixteen-year-old girl once more, the Princess he used to travel with, not the twenty-one-year-old Queen he had just left behind. Although he should have anticipated this, the sight caught him off guard. But he quickly regained his composure.
"Apologies, Your Highness, but I must speak with you urgently about Sheikah technology and our strategy to vanquish Calamity Ganon.”
“Come in then,” said Zelda quickly as she glanced about nervously and beckoned him to enter.
Link entered her study, and she quickly closed the door after him.
“Please be careful about discussing such matters openly with me. As you overheard, my Father has angrily forbidden me to spend any more time on Sheikah technology. He expects me to do nothing but pray. But what are these sudden concerns of yours?”
“Please, hear me out. I know this will be difficult to accept, but I am not the Link you are familiar with. I have journeyed back in time from over a century in the future, where our plan has failed," Link explained.
“Is this some sort of jest?” Zelda questioned, her brow furrowed in confusion. “What are you implying?”
"I assure you, it’s not a joke, Your Highness. Our strategy to defeat Calamity Ganon is fundamentally flawed. Armed with intelligence about Sheikah technology gathered from the Yiga Clan, Ganon intends to seize control of the Divine Beasts and Guardians, turning these machines against us and slaughtering the Champions. We must revise our plan.”
“Link, are you unwell? Has something happened to you?” Zelda said, looking at him with concern.
“As I said, I know this will be difficult for you to accept. To try to convince you, I can reveal information I wouldn’t otherwise know to prove the truth of what I’m saying. I can recite passages from your diary. You are well aware that I couldn’t have accessed it since it’s kept in your private quarters, where I’m not allowed. I can also quote entries from the Champions’ diaries."
“Go on, then,” said Zelda. “I’m surprised you even know I keep a diary in my room.”
“Very well, and apologies in advance,” said Link as he took a deep breath then began.
Bit by bit, I’ve gotten Link to open up to me. It turns out he’s quite a glutton. He can’t resist a delicious meal! When I finally got around to asking why he’s so quiet all the time, I could tell it was difficult for him to say. But he did. With so much at stake and so many eyes upon him, he feels it necessary to stay strong and to silently bear any burden. A feeling I know all too well… For him, it has caused him to stop outwardly expressing his thoughts and feelings. I always believed him to be simply a gifted person who had never faced a day of hardship. How wrong I was… Everyone has struggles that go unseen by the world… I was so absorbed with my own problems, I failed to see his. I wish to talk with him more and to see what lies beneath those calm waters, to hear him speak freely and openly… And perhaps I, too, will be able to bare my soul to him and share the demons that have plagued me all these years.
Zelda’s face flushed a deep red, and he could tell she was struggling to suppress her emotions, a battle he hoped she would win.
“That’s word for word, Link, and it’s unworthy of you to invade my privacy like that,” Zelda said angrily. “You swear before Hylia that you did not sneak into my room and read this?”
“I swear by Hylia and all I hold sacred, Your Highness,” said Link. “I only read it after Calamity Ganon’s attack when your room was destroyed. It was amazing it even survived. And it was the only proof we could come up with to convince you I was truly from the future.”
Zelda took a deep breath and managed to recover her composure.
“Well, I guess I have already bared my soul to you,” Zelda said with a smile. “And sorry for calling you a glutton. But you are really quite fond of food. Now, tell me what’s going on, Link. I assume I should still address you as Link?"
“Indeed, Your Highness,” Link replied. “I am, in essence, the same person, but the details are quite complex.”
“Very well. And you may call me Zelda when we’re in private,” she informed him. ”Did I ever mention that to you before? In any case, if what you say is true, we must arrange an emergency gathering of the four Champions as soon as possible. I’ll also need to discuss these developments with my father and get his permission. I’ll need you to accompany me to that meeting to help convince him. I suspect he won’t believe me on my own. In any case, you must remain within the castle and keep this information confidential."
“Um, Zelda, I have one request?”
“Yes?”
“I haven’t eaten yet,” said Link. “Is it possible to get something before we meet with HIs Majesty?”
“Come with me,” laughed Zelda as she opened the door, and they made their way to the castle to get some food.
The meeting with King Rhoam later that day went better than Link expected, given what he knew of the King and his daughter’s stormy relationship. Perhaps it was Link’s presence that helped. After all, hearing you would die in less than a week is certain to grab anyone’s attention. Or perhaps King Rhoam regretted his earlier outburst and losing his temper with her, realizing how much his daughter had tried her best to achieve her power without a mother who could help her. In any case, King Rhoam gave Zelda permission as leader of the Champions to proceed as she saw fit.
Zelda promptly organized an urgent assembly of the Champions, who convened at the castle two days later. Link was seated beside Zelda in a circle with the four Champions. Zelda kept Link separate from them to ensure everyone heard his story simultaneously. Unfortunately, this also prevented him from conversing with Mipha, something he was eager to do.
“I have summoned us for this urgent meeting because of an extraordinary development,” Zelda began. “Shortly, I will ask Link to share the details, but I must warn you that his account may be challenging to believe. I kindly request that you refrain from interrupting him and allow him to explain fully. Link, please proceed.”
Link rose to his feet and surveyed the room, taking in the faces of the four Champions: Daruk, Urbosa, Revali, and Mipha, his friends and comrades from a time long past. Although not a natural orator, Link knew he needed to persuade them of the truth behind his words.
“As Princess Zelda mentioned, what I’m about to share may be hard to believe. I am not the Link that you know, though I am essentially the same person. I have used the Temple of Time to travel back from over a century in the future, and for most of that hundred years, I lay in a healing slumber in a place called the Shrine of Resurrection.”
Murmurs spread throughout the group, but Zelda silenced the room, reiterating her plea for them to listen attentively as Link continued.
“I will attempt to demonstrate the validity of my claims shortly, but first, let me describe the consequences of our current course of action. Calamity Ganon will emerge in five days. However, he has discovered a way to corrupt the Guardians and Divine Beasts and assume control of them. He has also prepared powerful manifestations of himself to dominate the Divine Beasts. In the timeline I came from, Ganon initially succeeded. His manifestations infiltrated the Divine Beasts, killing each of you in the process. I, too, was near death from battling the Guardians while trying to safeguard Princess Zelda. Fortunately, in the nick of time, Princess Zelda unlocked her sealing power and annihilated the field of Guardians. Purah and Robbie then sealed me in the Shrine of Resurrection, where I remained for a century before awakening. During this time, Princess Zelda managed to seal herself and Ganon within Hyrule Castle. Eventually, I reclaimed the Master Sword and liberated the Divine Beasts and your trapped spirits by defeating Ganon’s manifestations. Ultimately, Zelda and I vanquished Calamity Ganon in Hyrule Field. Nevertheless, much of Hyrule was devastated, and countless lives were lost. With this knowledge and potentially an experimental procedure developed by Dr. Purah and Dr. Robbie to prevent the Divine Beasts from falling under Ganon’s control, we can now thwart his plans and preserve Hyrule.”
Throughout Link’s speech, Revali had been shifting in his seat, smirking and looking away. Sensing Link had reached a pause, he stood up and addressed the group.
“So, in the future you describe, all of us Champions are deemed utter failures, while you alone emerge as the triumphant hero! I cannot believe this and have never encountered such absurdity in my life! I, for one, would never be vanquished, not even by Ganon himself, let alone one of his underlings. What evidence do you have to support this fantastical tale?” Revali challenged, fixing his gaze on Link.
Link anticipated a response like this.
“Proving my claims directly is challenging, given that the events I describe haven’t transpired from your standpoint. To demonstrate their truth, I must share information about something that has already occurred—information that you possess, but I could only know if I had come from the future. One complication, which may sound too convenient to some of you,” he said, glancing at Revali, “is that I awoke in the Shrine of Resurrection with complete amnesia. Though I’ve been striving to recover my memories, most remain lost. My best option to convince you lies in my knowledge of your diaries or, in Daruk’s case, his so-called training manual. As you know, the Link you’re familiar with would never have had the opportunity to read those documents, yet I can recite passages from them.”
After quoting a passage from each of their diaries, the room fell silent. Urbosa was the first to speak up.
“Those words are exactly what I wrote. I don’t see how you could know that unless you’re telling the truth. I, for one, believe you,” Urbosa declared.
Daruk concurred while Mipha lowered her head, appearing saddened and embarrassed. Quietly, she said, “I believe you as well.”
Revali then interjected, “Well, you might be right about the others, but I never penned any of the statements you mentioned. Someone must have misinformed you. Regardless, I never had much faith in those mechanical contraptions for our defense, so I concur that reevaluating our strategy is wise.”
“Alright,” Zelda said, “It’s getting late, and we need to be well-rested. Let’s reconvene tomorrow morning.”
Revali promptly left for his quarters while Daruk and Urbosa approached Link. He was happy to see them again, but his thoughts were elsewhere. As they spoke, he glanced around the room, searching for Mipha.
“Urbosa and Daruk, I apologize. I do want to speak with you, but I must speak with Mipha now if I can find her,” Link explained.
Urbosa smiled and said, “Yes, that might be wise, Link. Especially after revealing that diary entry. Good luck!”
“Yeah, little guy,” added Daruk. “You may need it.”
Link eventually found Mipha strolling alone near a courtyard fountain, apparently lost in thought. She noticed him but remained silent.
“Mipha, may I speak with you? I apologize for reading your diary and causing you embarrassment. You must understand that at the time, you were gone, and I had lost nearly all memory of you. In fact, much of my recollection of our time together is still missing. I wanted to learn anything I could about you. Your father allowed me to read your diary, believing you would forgive me. I hope he was right.”
“I’m embarrassed, but I’ll move past it. We have more pressing matters to focus on. That’s not what’s troubling me, though,” Mipha admitted.
She hesitated, then looked into his eyes.
“Our encounter a few days ago at Ruta … that was with you, wasn’t it?” Mipha inquired.
“Yes,” Link confirmed, looking down. “I couldn’t tell you then. I used a Timeshift Stone to travel back in time. At that point, we weren’t certain Purah and Robbie could reactivate the Temple of Time, and using a Timeshift Stone was part of their research. I was forbidden from discussing the future with you. The chance to be with you again after nearly three years of having lost you meant everything to me. I apologize for not being entirely honest.”
“I sensed something was off,” Mipha admitted. “My emotions are jumbled right now. I love the Link I knew, but are you truly the same person? You don’t even remember much of me or our time together. I need some time to process this.”
“Mipha, I hope I am, or can become, the Link you love. But I can promise you that I am the Link who loves you,” Link declared. “My feelings for you are as strong as ever.”
“I’m sorry, I need some time. Good night,” Mipha said.
With that, she walked away, heading back to her room in the Castle. Link understood her need for space and time to process the extraordinary revelation, but he couldn’t help feeling a heavy sense of longing and concern as he watched her go.
The next morning, Mipha approached Zelda before the meeting commenced.
“Princess?” Mipha inquired, “May I have a word?”
“Of course, Mipha,” Zelda replied warmly.
“I’m not certain if this will help you unlock your power,” Mipha began, “but I access mine by envisioning that I’m saving someone I love. I’ve hesitated to share this with you because, well, the person I think about and love … is Link. I once thought we might be competing for Link’s affection, but I no longer feel that way.”
“Thank you for confiding in me,” said Zelda. “I realize that must have been difficult. I know Link and I spend a great deal of time together, and I understand what you must have felt. I’ll try your suggestion.”
Zelda focused, recalling the time Link rescued her from a Yiga Clan ambush. She had been overwhelmed with emotions for him then. She wasn’t certain it was love, but it was close. She felt a surge of power within her. Raising her right hand, the golden Triforce symbol illuminated the back of her palm. She would unleash a wave of energy if she didn’t restrain herself. This was the power she had prayed for! She lowered her hand, knowing her power would work when needed.
“Thank you, Mipha,” Zelda expressed. “You may have just saved us all.”
The meeting reconvened, and everyone agreed to accept Link’s information as accurate. The day’s discussion centered around devising a new plan that didn’t rely on controlling the Guardians and Divine Beasts during Ganon’s assault.
Initially, the Sheikah staff would be directed to deactivate and disable all the Guardians. Although the original plan was to utilize the Guardians to defend against Ganon, it was now too perilous to leave them operational.
“That is a wise precaution,” Link concurred. “But Ganon managed to control other Guardians that emerged from beneath Hyrule Castle, so we need to be mindful of that risk as well.”
Next, they would evacuate Hyrule Castle and the surrounding area, ensuring Ganon would target an empty structure.
The following step needed swift action: they would enter each Divine Beast and reprogram the main control unit using Dr. Purah’s defense rune. Then, they would vacate the Divine Beast, with each Champion waiting nearby. Link would stay with the designated Champion of one of the Divine Beasts. Vah Ruta was selected first, which pleased Link since rescuing Mipha was his primary personal goal. They would then await Ganon’s attack.
If the Champions witnessed Purah’s defense working, they could safely re-enter their Divine Beast and use it to vanquish the creature Ganon had sent to inhabit it. If Purah’s defense failed, Link and Mipha would venture into Vah Ruta and jointly seize control. Once achieved, Mipha would stay with Vah Ruta. Link would then journey to the other three Divine Beasts as quickly as possible and repeat the procedure. Revali required some persuasion, but eventually, Zelda firmly reminded him that her father had appointed her the leader of the Champions: if Purah’s defense failed, no Champion was to enter their Divine Beast until Link arrived. Meanwhile, Zelda would wait near Hyrule Castle, prepared to use her power to seal Ganon. Once all the Divine Beasts were under their control, Link would join Zelda in confronting Ganon at Hyrule Castle. The Divine Beasts would support the attack from afar. Then, they would finally put an end to Ganon.
The meeting adjourned, and everyone sprang into action. There was much to accomplish and only four days to do it in.
Prequel Chapter 9 - Victory and Celebration
Summary: Hyrule is victorious, though Link’s battle with one of Ganon’s creations does not go entirely as planned.
Mipha and Link stood on the northwest pier of East Reservoir Lake. If Link’s prediction was correct, today was the day Ganon would strike. Link recalled it was almost sunset after he and Zelda had returned from a fruitless pilgrimage to the Spring of Wisdom, and shortly afterward, Ganon’s attack had begun. So, he was anxious to finish preparations well before that.
“I’ll board Ruta and activate the main control unit with Purah’s defense program as planned,” Mipha declared, interrupting Link’s thoughts.
“And I’ll accompany you,” Link insisted. “I don’t want to risk our timing being off and Ganon’s blight creature arriving while you’re alone. I’ve worked tirelessly to get us to this point, and I won’t jeopardize everything now.”
“Very well,” Mipha agreed. “I’ll pull you along.”
Mipha and Link dove into the water, with Mipha swimming toward Ruta and pulling Link with one arm. They climbed aboard, and as soon as they entered, Link shuddered. He recalled his previous visit to Ruta from four years prior, leaving him unsettled. The last time he was here, Ruta was infested with malice and Guardian Scouts. But that wasn’t what bothered him; malice and Guardian Scouts weren’t a problem. What troubled him were his memories of the events that transpired just before he left Ruta that last time.
Ruta had been the first Divine Beast he sought to reclaim from Ganon’s control, and he hadn’t known what to expect. He had assumed Prince Sidon would cooperate with him to restore Ruta. And Sidon had indeed helped him overcome Ruta’s external defenses. But after disabling Ruta’s defenses, Sidon had merely offered words of encouragement to handle Ruta’s interior. Link was a Champion, after all, and only a Champion could enter a Divine Beast. Sidon appeared fearful, evidently eager to distance himself from Ruta and wait for Link back at the Domain. Link was left on his own. He approached the terminal at the entrance and activated it, then heard a familiar voice in his head.
“You’re here!” she had exclaimed, her voice filled with surprise and joy. He recognized that voice from his memories of her – it was Mipha. Her voice guided and encouraged him through the areas needed to regain control of Ruta. At first, he thought she might still be alive, as her father had hoped, trapped somewhere but able to communicate through Ruta. Eventually, he activated the main control unit and battled Waterblight Ganon. He emerged victorious! Their enemy had been defeated.
Now, where was Mipha? But before he could savor his victory and search for her, he heard her voice once more. “Hello, Link,” she had said. And then he saw her spirit, and the reality of everyone’s fears sank in. Mipha was dead. He stood speechless, in shock, as he listened to her and received her gift of healing. Through some magic, he found himself disappearing. And when he reappeared, he was outside Ruta and back in Zora’s Domain. And Mipha was gone. To him, Ruta had been haunted.
Now, Ruta was eerily silent, and the sound of their footsteps echoing off the walls in the cavernous machine made him uneasy. The only other noise was the splashing of water flowing in another chamber. They both began walking to the central terminal at the rear of the bottom floor. Mipha appeared entirely composed, completely at ease with her Divine Beast. But Link remained on edge. He knew it didn’t make sense, but the muscle memory from his time inside Ruta made him cautious. He reached back and took comfort in the feel of his sword.
At last, they reached the main terminal. Mipha started working with it and activated Purah’s defense system.
“Alright, Purah’s system is activated,” Mipha announced.
“I just whispered a prayer to Hylia that it works,” said Link. “Let’s get out of here now.”
They retraced their steps to Ruta’s entrance, then dove into the water and swam back to the northwest pier.
“So now we wait,” said Link.
“You were quite nervous inside Ruta,” observed Mipha. “You shouldn’t be afraid of her.”
“It wasn’t really fear,” explained Link. "It was my terrible memory of my last time there.”
“I wish I could heal your mind. Do you want to talk about it?” Mipha inquired.
“I do, and I don’t,” admitted Link. “For someone with so many memory problems, I wish this was one I could forget. In my original timeline, Ruta was the last time you spoke to me face to face, or rather, your spirit did. I carried that heartache with me all this time. But that hasn’t happened now, and with Hylia’s help, I will do everything in my power to ensure it never does.”
Mipha and Link continued to wait on the pier.
“What happens next?” Mipha asked.
“From what I recall, Ganon emerges from beneath Hyrule Castle, and waves of purple malice spew out across Hyrule, infecting all the Guardians and Divine Beasts. Four dreadful creatures of his seize the Divine Beasts. We should be able to see what happens to Ruta from here,” Link explained.
“What is the creature Ganon sends to Ruta like?” Mipha inquired.
“It’s a repulsive monstrosity with a single eye capable of firing an energy beam. It also wields a giant spear and can summon blocks of ice,” described Link.
“Are you sure you can handle it? Do you need my help?” Mipha asked with concern.
“I can handle it alone,” assured Link. “I’ve practiced defeating it many times. If it cannot enter Ruta, then I need you to take control of Ruta. If it can enter Ruta, then you and I will follow it inside and battle it together.”
They waited in silence. Suddenly, a distant roaring sound filled the air. The sky darkened, and waves of purple malice could be seen shooting through the atmosphere, originating from the west in the direction of Hyrule Castle. Ganon’s assault had begun.
A massive surge of purple malice streaked from the sky, heading straight for them. It collided with Ruta, but instead of infecting it as the creature anticipated, it ricocheted off and landed in the lake. Rising from the water with a hideous screeching sound, it scanned its surroundings.
“Purah’s defense seems to be working!” shouted Link over the noise.
“I need to get back inside Ruta,” Mipha declared.
“Yes,” Link agreed, “but I won’t let you get anywhere near that thing. I’ll distract it by luring it closer to the shore. When it’s focused on me, swim around the side and approach Ruta out of its sight. Promise me you’ll be safe.”
“I promise,” Mipha assured him. “Stay safe yourself.”
Link remembered Waterblight Ganon all too well. He had practiced defeating it multiple times and was better equipped now than ever before. He started by shooting its eye with arrows. The creature took notice and approached the shore. It swung its enormous spear at Link, who managed to dodge it. Retreating further back on the pier out of reach, Link launched more arrows at the creature.
Waterblight Ganon seemed hesitant to follow Link, likely due to its master’s orders to infect Ruta. The creature struggled with its next move, staying close to Ruta. Link couldn’t reach it with his sword in the water, but he had a plentiful supply of arrows. Mipha was nowhere in sight, probably swimming underwater. Link unleashed a barrage of bomb arrows, capturing the creature’s attention. It began forming ice blocks and hurling them at Link, who relied on arrows to shatter them. He attacked the creature once more with bomb arrows and sensed it weakening.
As Waterblight Ganon drew closer to the pier, it started to charge its energy beam. Link quickly put away his bow and readied his shield to deflect the attack. His timing was off, though, and the beam knocked him down, searing his shoulder. For some reason, this creature was charging its energy beam faster than he recalled. He groaned, his shoulder throbbing in pain. Hearing the creature charge its weapon again, he needed to get up and position his shield to deflect the incoming attack. Struggling to his feet, the pain in his shoulder made it difficult to push himself up. If he couldn’t rise in time, he’d have to try diving out of the way at the last second. The pitch of the energy beam increased as it approached its firing level.
Suddenly, the sound of a giant machine in motion filled the air. Ruta’s head turned to face Waterblight Ganon, distracting the creature. It looked toward Ruta as a powerful beam of blue energy erupted from it. The beam struck Waterblight Ganon, causing it to howl in pain. The continuous assault eventually reduced the creature to a purple mass that disintegrated into nothing. Ruta’s beam ceased, and the lake returned to silence.
Link watched Mipha emerge from Ruta. She dove into the water and swam to him with astonishing speed.
“You’re hurt,” she said. “Let me help you.”
Mipha’s hand glowed with her healing power, and she waved it over the gruesome burn marks on his shoulder. Soon the wound healed, and the scars disappeared.
“Thank you, Mipha,” said Link. “I’m glad you can still do that.”
“So am I,” Mipha replied. “I wasn’t sure I could.”
“We did it,” said Link. "Purah’s defense worked. Now you need to lock Ruta’s targeting beam onto Hyrule Castle. Sorry, of course, you already know that. Anyway, I hope the other Champions are experiencing similar success. But now I must go to Hyrule Castle so Princess Zelda and I can finish this for good.”
“Yes, I understand,” said Mipha. “I will position Ruta to assist you. I pray Hylia we will be victorious, and she will protect you and bring you back safely.”
The details of Zelda, Link, and the Champions’ victory over Ganon are recorded in the annals of Hyrule history, so Link refrained from recounting more of the story in his notes. With the knowledge Link brought back in time, they were successful. Purah’s defensive rune worked, and Ganon and the Yiga Clan were caught off guard. When it was over, Zelda and Link stood together in Hyrule Field, the residual purple malice gradually vanishing from the land and sky. Zelda turned to Link and smiled. They embraced and congratulated one another. Their plan had worked, and Hyrule was safe. It was time to celebrate. Hyrule was now at peace, and they would not have to worry about Ganon for a long time.
As Zelda and Link rode back to Hyrule Castle, they could see people who had evacuated the area slowly returning. And as they reached the castle entrance, King Rhoam himself came out to welcome his daughter home.
Zelda and Link dismounted, and King Rhoam and his daughter embraced as he watched.
“Forgive me, Zelda,” said King Rhoam as he held her in his arms. “Last time, I spoke too harshly to you out of desperation for our kingdom’s survival. But I was wrong. I know you were doing all you could. If only Mother….”
“It’s alright, Father. Of course, I forgive you, and I understand,” said Zelda quickly, as she knew speaking of Mother would only bring tears to her Father’s eyes. “And I know you meant well. We were both on the wrong track, and it took Princess Mipha to show me what I needed to learn. Let us not forget we also owe Link a great debt of gratitude. Our success would not have been possible without his help.”
“Yes, Link, of course, you are a true hero,” said King Rhoam. “And I cannot thank you enough for looking out for my daughter.”
“Thank you, Your Majesty,” said Link. “Serving as Her Higness’s knight was an honor and a privilege.”
“Now, come, let us all go inside. We need to plan a celebration,” said King Rhoam.
Link remained at Hyrule Castle for the next week as the celebration was being prepared.
“I’m finally sleeping well at night,” Link said to Zelda over lunch one day. “And I feel like the world’s weight has lifted from my shoulders.”
“Well, it has,” laughed Zelda. “And off my shoulders as well. I think we’re both more alike than we realized.”
When the day of the celebration arrived, banners fluttered in the breeze, and people filled Castle Town for the festivities. The Champions were given places of honor on the platform, where King Rhoam expressed his gratitude for their heroic efforts. Link had hoped to spend time with Mipha after the ceremony, but two Zora guards had accompanied her on the trip, and apparently, she needed to return to the Domain right afterward.
After the main celebration, each village also celebrated to honor its individual Champion. Link could not attend all of them, so he chose the one at Zora’s Domain. Mipha was the rightful star of the ceremony, with King Dorephan commending his daughter for her role in Ganon’s defeat. Link remained in the audience, applauding for her, but after the ceremony, she left to be with her family without speaking to him. She hadn’t come to terms with who he was or accepted him as the person she once knew and loved. He was lost in thought when he heard a voice he recognized.
“You okay, Link? Why so glum?”
Link turned to see Gaddison smiling at him.
“Oh, yes, I’m okay,” said Link.
“You look like you’re not as thrilled as the rest of us,” said Gaddison. “Is something wrong?”
“No, it’s not that; I’m as thrilled for Princess Mipha as ever,” said Link. “It’s, um, something personal.”
“Well, if you need company, Bazz, Rivan, and I are always ready to … how do you Hylians say it? Lend an ear?”
“Very funny, Gaddison, and I know we have big ears,” said Link. “And thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. But I need to return to Hyrule Castle now and settle some matters. I’ll be back soon.”
Link returned to Hyrule Castle, and with Princess Zelda no longer needing a personal guardian, he obtained King Rhoam’s permission to leave his duties. Then he journeyed back to Zora’s Domain again, hoping he and Mipha could eventually be together again.
Prequel Chapter 10 - Together!
The victory celebrations had ended, and life gradually returned to normal across Hyrule. The triumph over Ganon had come quickly, especially compared to the alternate timeline, and many people didn't fully grasp the magnitude of the danger they had avoided. It seemed more like a reenactment of the legend from ten thousand years prior. With his duties to guard Princess Zelda no longer necessary, Link chose to stay in Zora's Domain, hoping to rekindle his relationship with Mipha somehow.
In retrospect, this was perhaps the most challenging period for him. Link had done everything he could to be with Mipha, but he couldn't deny that he wasn't the same person she had known before the time travel event. He had once been that person, 104 years ago by his reckoning of time. But that person no longer existed, and he had taken his place. He had always naively assumed Mipha would accept him as if nothing had happened.
But what if she couldn't? He now realized how much he was asking of her—to overlook his memory loss and their time together. How did she feel about his Timeshift Stone visit with her at Ruta? Had he been wrong to pretend he was the person she had been with just a week before when they became engaged? In a sense, he was that person, but he couldn't even remember what had transpired. Did she view that visit as a violation, akin to swapping a twin brother for a husband? He had wanted to be honest with her then, but Purah had forbidden it. Purah had seen his visit as an experiment, a test of the Timeshift Stone technology to restore the Temple of Time. But to him, it was more than an experiment—it was a chance to be with the person he loved. But how did she feel about all of this now? What a cruel twist of fate if he ended up alone again.
Mipha still carried significant responsibility as the future leader of the Zora. Though combat training was no longer a priority, she was heavily involved in the Zora government, and committee meetings took up much of her time. She also enjoyed spending time with her younger brother, Sidon. With their mother gone, Mipha filled the roles of both mother and sister to Sidon, doing her best to help her busy father raise him.
Link still struggled with memory loss, and people assumed it was due to injuries he sustained in his final battles with Ganon. Only a few individuals to whom he had explained his story knew the truth. He continued to wander near the Domain, attempting to regain his memories and speaking with anyone who might help. But he made no progress. Finally, in desperation and realizing he needed to do something, Link approached Mipha after she had finished a meeting with her father.
"Princess Mipha, I know you're very busy, but may I speak with you?" asked Link.
"Of course, and just Mipha is fine," she replied with a smile.
"I know you still think I'm not the same person you once knew, and my lack of memory about our time together doesn't help. But I truly am the same person. When you have time, would you be willing to help me recover my memories? I can't give up on what I know we once shared. It means way too much to me.”
Mipha considered his request for a moment.
"Alright, let's spend an hour each day working on this. We can visit different places, and I'll help you try to remember. We'll see what happens. We can start tomorrow."
"Thank you!" exclaimed Link.
The next morning, Mipha met Link in the plaza.
"I think we should start with your childhood," said Mipha. "You used to have Zora playmates, and I thought it would help you to learn to swim with them. Let's walk over to East Reservoir Lake, and I'll show you where it happened. Perhaps it will jog your memory."
They walked to the northwest pier of East Reservoir Lake.
"It was right here, where the water is calm,” Mipha said. "It took a lot of effort for me to figure out how to teach you to swim. Unfortunately, you lack fins and webbed feet. I held you as you learned to kick and pull yourself through the water. Eventually, we figured out the best way for you to swim. Do you remember any of that?"
"No, I'm sorry, I don't," admitted Link.
"Well, we'll keep trying," Mipha reassured him. "We have time for one more location today."
Mipha took Link to a spot where he had fallen while climbing, and she healed him. He told her he couldn't remember that either.
"I'm not entirely surprised," Mipha chuckled. "There were many times I healed you, and it would be difficult to single out just one. I remember this one because of your bravery. Despite the severe bruise and how small you were, you never cried. Well, that's all the time I have for today. We can continue tomorrow."
"Thank you, Mipha. Your help means a great deal to me," said Link.
The next morning, they met in the plaza again.
"Ready to try some more?" Mipha asked.
"Yes, and thank you for being so patient with me," Link responded.
"Let's start right here in the Domain," Mipha suggested. "Follow me."
Mipha guided Link up one of the waterways, the channels where water flowed into the plaza level, then stopped at the top.
"We slid down these together when you were small," Mipha reminisced. "I held you in front of me, and we laughed as we glided down the curved waterway. You wanted to do it repeatedly, but eventually, my father caught us and said my behavior was unbecoming of a princess. Do you remember any of that?"
"I'm sorry, I don't," Link admitted. "I hope I didn't cause you any trouble."
"No," Mipha laughed. "My father understood and was just concerned about your safety. Come, we might have time for two more locations today."
Each day, they visited different locations around Zora's Domain, and Mipha shared memories of their time together. Usually, the stories were new to Link, but sometimes he recalled something on his own, and his excitement resembled a schoolboy proud of giving the correct answer in class. Mipha would laugh and say, "See, we're making progress!"
He hoped she would eventually accept him as before, but he understood that he couldn't rush things. Mipha had to proceed at her own pace, in her own way. But her kind and caring nature compelled her to help him.
After just over a week of their shared journeys, Link noticed a subtle change in Mipha's demeanor. It happened during their visit to Ralis Pond.
"We visited here several times over the years,” Mipha said. "But there was one instance when we stayed out late, and Sunset Fireflies began to appear. You challenged me to see who could collect more. Surprisingly, we tied in the end. You sweetly said it was a sign we were meant to be together, natural companions. Do you remember that, Link?"
“No, sadly, and it’s a shame because that sounds like such a sweet moment,” sighed Link.
However, she had just lifted his spirits. He realized that she had suddenly called him by his name, Link. Until now, she avoided using his name as if it wasn’t his. He thought that perhaps reliving their time together was benefiting her as much as him. Perhaps these reminiscences were helping dismantle a wall in her attitude toward him, and it would eventually convince her that he was the same person.
And Link was right. Mipha had indeed been experiencing a change in her feelings. As she spent time with Link each day, it all started coming back. Maybe her feelings had never left, and they just needed time to restore themselves. He had the same boyish good looks, the same cute smile, the same mannerisms, and the same kind, gentle and respectful way he dealt with her, so grateful for the time she was spending with him.
And yet he wasn't the same. She could see it when they spoke about the past. He would listen to what she told him, then look off into the distance thinking, trying to piece what she had told him with the other tangled strands of his memory he had recovered.
And she could feel that this version of Link had suffered, had felt the pain of loss, including her loss. She could sometimes see that sadness in his eyes, something she had never seen there before. This was a more mature Link than the one she had known, a Link who had lived through a terrible time and could never really forget it. He had done all he could to make things right for everyone else in this timeline. But he could never make things entirely right for himself. He alone carried the memory and the pain of those terrible events he sometimes spoke about. She tried to look at how things must be from his point of view, living through four years of regret over what had happened. And she felt herself falling in love all over again. Deep down, she began to accept it was the same him.
Link remembered the turning point. He was on one of his walks with Mipha in the area around Zora's Domain, and they found themselves at the foot of Veiled Falls, where a serene pool of water and lush greenery surrounded them. It was close to the Domain but provided enough seclusion for individuals seeking privacy. It was just the kind of place two lovers might choose to be alone together.
"Let's stop here, Link," said Mipha. "Come, sit with me."
He sat down beside her on a large rock jutting into the water. It was a beautiful day as the waterfall threw up a foamy white spray, and the sun sparkled on the water.
"Do you remember anything at all about this place and what it meant for us?" asked Mipha.
"I don't remember," said Link. "And I'm sorry that I can't remember. I wish I could. It's a beautiful location."
"Then let me tell you what happened," said Mipha. "It was right after your visit alone to the domain when we sat on Ruta's trunk, and I healed your arm and told you I hoped we could spend time together when our task was done. You were quiet, under stress from all your duties. It was too late to travel then, and you were too tired. So, you stayed at the Seabed Inn that night. You agreed to meet me the next morning, and when I met you, we walked together here to Veiled Falls. You had told me once you had trouble sleeping and still looked tired even after a night at the inn. We sat on this very rock, and the sunlight, fresh air, and the sound of the falls put you to sleep, your head coming to rest on my shoulder. I cradled your head and then let it slide down and rest more comfortably in my lap. Then I brushed your soft blond hair back once from your face. You slept for quite a while, breathing gently. I was happy to see you get some rest, as I knew you needed it. You had been under so much stress. Then all at once, you woke up, startled, not knowing where you were at first. I calmed you and assured you that you were safe. You sat up then, and our eyes met. I smiled at you, and then you suddenly leaned forward and kissed me. I felt like I was in a dream! You seemed unsure of my reaction, but I kissed you back at once, and then we held each other and kissed more times than I could count. Afterward, you told me you loved me but had been afraid of losing me as a friend. I told you I loved you, too. I wished that day would never end! I had hoped to offer you the armor on your visit as you were without the Princess for a change, and I had prayed for the courage to do so. I had brought it with me in a bundle. You told me later you thought it was our picnic lunch, and we both laughed. But after you expressed your love for me, I had no fear of rejection. I offered you the armor, and you happily accepted it. We discussed our plans next, and we thought it best to wait until after our task was done to share the joyful news. You had to return to guard the Princess then, and I took the armor back with me when I returned home and kept what happened a secret. That was the end of your visit, but it was the happiest visit of all for me. I felt my dreams had all come true!"
She smiled gently, her golden eyes looking straight into his. He looked back into her eyes and started feeling warm inside. She looked so irresistible!
"Mipha, can we start again? I hope you know by now it's really me. I love you so very much!"
He leaned forward and kissed her. She returned his kiss, and they embraced.
"I love you, too," said Mipha as she smiled at him. "I know it really is you, after all."
"Oh, thank Hylia!" exclaimed Link. "I thought you might never come to accept me! I've lived for this moment for so long, sweetheart, for over four years. I haven't stopped thinking about you, dreaming about you, and loving you all that time. I love you so, so much, Mipha! I never want us to be apart."
Then he reached for her, and they kissed again, and again, and again. When their kissing finally ended, Mipha spoke up.
"We won't be apart now, my love. We have each other now and forever. Let's return to the Domain. There's something I'd like to give you."
Hand in hand, they walked back to Zora's Domain and approached the throne room. Mipha asked Link to wait while she fetched a bundle.
"Link, I want you to have this, with all my love,” Mipha said. "Once more, I might add."
Link unwrapped the bundle to reveal the exquisite blue and silver Zora armor he remembered – a true labor of love. Naturally, he understood its significance.
"You don't need to say anything. I know what this means, and you've made me happier than you can imagine. Of course, I accept it, Mipha, and I will always cherish it and you," said Link.
They embraced and shared a passionate kiss.
"I know you don't remember, but this is the second time you've accepted this armor. I'm glad you haven't changed your mind! But this is the last time you're going to put me through all this drama," Mipha laughed.
"I promise!" laughed Link. "I think our relationship has had enough drama to last a lifetime or maybe two. Should we start discussing a wedding date now?"
"We can speak with Father about it," suggested Mipha. "We should be able to marry in a couple of weeks. But until then, you owe me some quality romantic time together. You don't know what you put me through!"
"I know, and I'm sorry," Link replied. "But I've dreamt of this moment for so long, and I'm still floating with joy."
"That's a charming Zora way of putting it," Mipha laughed. "Let's go tell Father now."
"I assume he will approve, right?" Link inquired.
"Well, there is only one way to find out, sweetheart,” Mipha said, taking his hand.
Link's nerves began to fray.
"Mipha, don't you have any idea at all about how your father feels about us marrying?" Link asked. "It didn't come up in past conversation at all?"
"It did, and I have some idea how he feels," Mipha replied. "But that was about the original Link. I haven't specifically spoken to him about you, the new Link.”
"But I am me!" Link exclaimed. "I mean, I am the original Link, just different in a sense. So he should feel the same way toward me, right?"
"You would think so, wouldn't you?" Mipha said, smiling at him.
"Mipha, please don't put me through this," Link pleaded. "Your father is a rather imposing figure. I would not like to see him upset with me."
“I can tell married life with you is going to be so much fun! I’m just teasing you, sweetheart," Mipha laughed, squeezing his hand. "Father will be thrilled. Don't worry."
Link squeezed her hand back and let out a sigh of relief. When they reached the throne room, King Dorephan saw them enter holding hands. He realized what must have happened and burst into a smile.
"Father, I have some wonderful news," Mipha announced. "Link and I are to be married!"
"That is indeed wonderful and very welcome news!" King Dorephan replied. "I am so happy for you both. Congratulations! And welcome to the family, Link."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Link responded. "I love your daughter very much and couldn't be happier."
"We were wondering if it was possible to have the wedding in a couple of weeks," Mipha added.
"Yes, we can manage that," King Dorephan agreed. "Leave everything to me. Just let me know whom to invite."
The next two weeks together were a romantic interlude of sorts when, as an engaged couple, they could relax together, swim, hike, and enjoy each other's company. They spent it exploring areas around the Domain, with Mipha sometimes reminiscing about past times they had spent there.
When their wedding day finally came, the Champions all attended, as did Princess Zelda. Kapson, the Zora priest, was to perform the ceremony. Link found it a happy irony that the wedding service was taking place where Mipha's memorial statue had stood in his former timeline.
The plaza was quite crowded: a royal wedding didn't happen very often. Zelda and the other Champions stood near the front. Link wore the full Zora armor, and his beautiful bride-to-be wore her Zora headdress. Zora wedding customs were similar to Hylian’s but not quite as formal. There was no exchange of rings, and there was no wedding party. Zoras loved music, so there would be plenty of that, and of course, there were marriage vows.
Link stood in the plaza before Kapson awaiting Mipha's entrance. The Zora musicians played a song that Link took to be their equivalent of a wedding march, and Mipha and her father, King Dorephan, made their way across the plaza. As they walked past the audience, the Zoras bowed their heads in respect for the King. Zoras did not typically kneel except in certain formal situations. Eventually, King Dorephan escorted Mipha to Link and then stepped aside.
Link glanced over at Mipha, and she looked back and gave him a quick smile. If he thought she looked beautiful before, she looked absolutely radiant now. Kapson asked the crowd for silence, then began the ceremony.
"It is my great honor and pleasure to perform this ceremony that will seal before Nayru the marriage of Lady Mipha and Link. I ask all of you in the audience to remain silent while I ask Link and Lady Mipha to repeat the marriage oath," said Kapson.
Link went first.
"I, Link, do swear before Nayru and all those present to take Mipha to be my wife and to be a faithful and loving husband to her as long as we both shall live."
Next, it was Mipha's turn.
"I, Mipha, do swear before Nayru and all those present to take Link to be my husband and to be a faithful and loving wife to him as long as we both shall live."
"By the authority granted to me as Zora priest, I now pronounce Lady Mipha and Link to be married before Nayru and the Zora Kingdom," declared Kapson.
Link reached over and kissed Mipha while the crowd erupted in applause.
"I have never been happier than this moment. I love you so much!" Link exclaimed.
"I'm glad you found some words," Mipha laughed. "But I am the happiest I have ever been too, and I love you with all my heart."
They kissed again, and soon everyone was congratulating them. Sidon came over to Link and hugged him.
"Father said I just got a big brother," Sidon remarked.
"You sure did, Sidon," Link replied, hugging him back. "And I just got a little brother. I hope we can have a lot of fun playing together."
"Welcome to the family," King Dorephan said. "You have made my daughter very happy and me as well. I hope you will feel comfortable calling me Father."
"I am honored, and I may not be comfortable, but I am happy to do so, Father," Link responded. "Your daughter has made me the happiest I have ever been!"
It was time for the reception, which would be held right in the same plaza. There was plenty of food and dancing. Link was not a good dancer, but he did his best. It was the first time he danced with Mipha.
"So we finally get to dance together," Link said. "I apologize for not being very good at it."
"No problem," Mipha replied. "Just follow my lead. We Zoras love music so much that Royal Family names follow musical scales. But relax and listen to the music. This is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's called 'Waves of Love,' and I used to think of you every time I heard it. Now I can finally enjoy it with you as my husband."
"It is a beautiful piece of music. And I think the speeches start after our dance," Link mentioned. "That's another great reason to keep dancing."
Mipha laughed, and they continued dancing, holding each other close.
When the dance finally ended, each Champion gave a heartfelt speech. Revali went first, and given their history, Link was unsure what to expect.
“No introduction is needed, for you all should know me as the renowned Rito Champion Revali. I’m happy to see Mipha and Link united in marriage. Mipha has always embodied kindness and compassion while also excelling as a Champion. I must admit, she mastered her Divine Beast as quickly as I did, which is quite an accomplishment. Despite my rivalry with Link, I've grown to respect him. Our newlyweds will always be welcome at Rito Village, and I wish them a lifetime of joy together."
Next was Daruk, his eyes glistening with emotion.
"I'm not much for speeches, but I've always admired Mipha's grace and considered Link my 'little guy' friend. They're perfect for each other, and I'm overjoyed to see them married. Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness. And hey, if you ever visit Goron City, you'll always be welcome. Just remember to pack plenty of elixirs!"
Urbosa followed, her voice imbued with warmth.
"Vasaaq, everyone! And congratulations to the newlyweds! I've long suspected Mipha's feelings for Link and am delighted to see him return her love. Link is undoubtedly fortunate to have someone as beautiful, caring, and loving as Mipha. But many of you do not know the difficult path Link took to reach this moment. Both Mipha and Link are extraordinary people who deserve each other's love. I know Zoras can't easily visit the desert, but I send my sincerest wishes for a blissful life together."
Finally, it was Princess Zelda's turn. Of all the guests, she was the person Link felt closest to.
"On behalf of myself and my father, King Rhoam, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mipha and Link. We wish them well and welcome them always at Hyrule Castle. I have not known Link as long as Mipha, who was his childhood friend. And witnessing such friends become sweethearts and eventually marry is a rare privilege. But I, too, have known Link for a long time under unique circumstances. When I was sixteen, my father assigned him as my knight to protect me during my travels across Hyrule. We spent countless days together, often facing danger. Throughout our journey, I learned to respect Link as a selfless Champion. Urbosa mentioned how lucky Link is to have Mipha, and he truly is. But I want to emphasize that Mipha is equally fortunate to have a husband as loyal and selfless as Link. I can attest to his unwavering dedication and courage in the face of overwhelming danger. Mipha, you've married someone who will always be there for you, caring for and protecting you. I wish you a long and happy life together. To Mipha and Link!"
The crowd cheered, and the party continued with dancing and laughter late into the night. At one point, Link saw Zelda talking with Urbosa, then Urbosa left to get some refreshments. He walked over to Zelda.
"Your Highness," said Link. "May I have the honor of the next dance with you?"
"Of course, Link," Zelda laughed. "How could I pass up a dance with you on this special day!"
Link took Zelda's hand, and they walked to the dance floor in the center of the plaza. The music began, and it was a slow dance. They held each other.
"That was a beautiful speech," said Link. "Thank you so much for coming. It means a lot to me."
"I meant every word of it," said Zelda. "And I'm happy to be here. I hope you know how special you are to me, Link. The experiences we shared are once in a lifetime, or maybe twice in your case, but I will never forget them. What we did together was extraordinary! Together with our Champion friends, we saved Hyrule. The last time that happened was over ten thousand years ago."
They continued to hold each other as they danced.
"Yes, what we did, we will hopefully never do again," said Link. "You're very special to me as well. I miss the talks we used to have during our travels. It's too bad that you're so far away and so busy. Talking again sometimes would be nice."
"You and Mipha are always welcome, and I am never too busy for you," said Zelda. "And I don't mind visiting Zora's Domain. It's beautiful here. And they do know how to party!"
The music they were dancing to was ending. Link had a feeling he couldn't put into words that something in his life was also coming to an end. Not that the rest of his life wouldn't be happy. And it wasn't about romance. He loved Mipha dearly. But what he and Zelda shared would never happen again, and their relationship was unique. They were the legendary princess and hero of Hyrule.
"Thank you, Zelda, for the dance and everything," said Link. "I do miss you."
"And I do you," said Zelda. "But enjoy your life with Mipha now. We shall meet again soon.”
As the celebration began to wind down, Mipha and Link took a moment to have a last dance together, their hearts swelling with love and gratitude.
"You know, I can't believe this day has finally come," Link whispered, holding Mipha close.
"I can't either," Mipha replied, her eyes shining with love. "But now that it has, I can't imagine spending my life with anyone else. We have been through so much together, and I am grateful for every moment."
As they swayed together, surrounded by friends and family, Mipha and Link knew they had found a love that would last a lifetime. And as they looked into each other's eyes, they felt a deep sense of peace and contentment, knowing that they were embarking on the next great adventure of their lives together.
When their dance ended, it was clear the party was starting to wind down. The oldest and youngest guests had already left. Mipha and Link went around together, thanked everyone for coming, and wished them goodnight. They were planning to travel overland to Lanayru Bay tomorrow morning and then take a boat to Lurelin Village, where they would spend five days relaxing. At Lurelin Village, the seacoast and weather were beautiful, there was plenty of fresh fruit and fish, and they could enjoy swimming together. It was a favorite honeymoon spot. After saying goodnight to the remaining guests, Mipha and Link headed back to where they could sleep, holding hands.
"I cannot believe this day is finally here," said Link as he caressed her hand.
"I cannot believe it either," said Mipha. "Once I fell in love with you, I always hoped this day would come but feared it never would. We spent many happy days together growing up and grew very close. But I was never sure you would ever return my feelings. I missed you so much when you were gone and was thrilled every time you returned here. After you became a Champion and Zelda's appointed knight, I feared you would be injured in your travels, and I would not be there to help you, or you would develop feelings for Zelda or someone else while we were apart. But then you finally told me you loved me on that special day together at Veiled Falls when we kissed for the first time. In the end, you stayed true to your heart as I stayed true to mine, and now, we can be together."
"I'm glad I did stay true to my heart. But you don't know how hard I worked to get here in the other timeline! The loneliness of waking up with no memories, no friends, and the few people who recognized me blaming me for my failure. The many Sheikah Shrines I had to work through, the endless Guardian, Lynel, and other monster battles, the long journeys alone through scorching hot and freezing cold deserts, snowy mountains, burning lava fields, and deep forests, and all the time with monsters hiding, ready to attack on sight. It meant sleeping alone at remote stables, camping alone in the wilderness with the rain or snow blowing around me, finding new weapons to replace the broken ones, and searching for food. And, worst of all, freeing the four Divine Beasts from the malignant creatures Ganon spawned and finding out my Champion friends had all perished a hundred years before. It was the most horrible life I could imagine!" said Link.
"Was it all worth it? Would you do it again?" asked Mipha.
"In a heartbeat," said Link, leaning over to kiss her. "If it meant I could be with you."
They embraced and kissed, and then Link suddenly remembered something.
"Oh, by the way, what is your favorite flower, sweetheart?" said Link after their kiss ended.
"Blue Nightshade. Why?"
"It's been something I've been meaning to ask you for a very long time and keep forgetting," said Link. “That's a beautiful flower. I like it too."
The End
