Work Text:
Marriage is something both Ochako and Tsuyu have talked about before. They’ve laughingly said that one would have to wear a white suit since both weren’t comfortable in full dresses and that they would have to be married by a lake with frogs croaking in the back.
“You’ll feel right at home, Tsu!” Ochako said, throwing her arms up excitedly.
But they had never talked seriously about it. It’s what had Ochako fidgeting and playing with the box in her lap. Putting it in her pocket, taking it back out, switching it to her other pocket. She couldn’t resist dressing up a little in a skirt. It feels like she was in high school with her tights on again and she smiles a little.
Tsuyu is coming back from the shore after doing a month of coast guard hero work. They promised her she would be off today so Ochako started making a fancier dinner than usual. She wanted Tsuyu to feel at home after such a long time away.
Ochako bounces her feet off the ground, waiting for the sound of Tsuyu’s car outside. It was some time before there were finally wheels outside on the gravel driveway. Ochako stuffs the ring box into her pocket, deep enough that Tsuyu wouldn’t see it. She bounds to the door, opening it and meeting Tsuyu at the steps. She smiles, her arms pumping excitedly as she looks Tsuyu over.
It took a moment before they finally launched into the other's arm. They go down on the porch in a tangle with Ochako sitting in Tsuyu’s lap. Tsuyu smelled like the sea salt and sand and Ochako just buries her face into Tsuyu’s neck and holds her.
“I missed you,” she says quietly to Tsuyu.
“I know. The ocean was pretty but not as pretty as you.”
Ochako gives a nervous, airy giggle. “As blunt as ever I see! You aren’t hurt are you?”
“I have some cuts on my back and my left thigh was bitten from an out of control villain but nothing bad.”
Ochako scrambles off of Tsuyu’s lap sitting beside her and puffing her cheeks out. “You should’ve told me sooner! I could’ve hurt you more!”
“It was a week ago. I’m fine, Ochako.” Tsuyu smiles, her eyes closing. “You would never hurt me on purpose, don’t worry.”
Tsuyu reaches out and tucks a piece of hair behind Ochako’s ear, tracing her thumb along Ochako’s cheek and letting her hand linger.
“I have something I wanted to ask you...For a while, really.” Ochako blurts out. “But I have food ready to be made so come in already! Tell me about your last couple of days while I cook.”
Tsuyu makes a face. “We’ll both cook You don’t have to-”
“I want to do all the work! Let me do it, come on, please?”
“...Fine but I’m cleaning the dishes. You don’t need to go all out just because I came home from work.”
Ochako hurriedly pulled Tsuyu to her feet, ushering her through the door as she picked up Tsuyu’s dropped bags. She stashed them in the living room for now before dashing into the kitchen. She shooed Tsuyu away and into a dining chair as she pulled the prepped vegetables and meat from the fridge.
Tsuyu talks as Ochako cooks. She talks about her day and how everybody was sad to see her leave. She talks about how she wanted to do something similar like that again because it meant a lot of helping kids and sickly. She talks and talks and Ochako ends up almost burning the fish in the pan because she didn’t want to stop listening for a second.
When everything was ready and on the table to eat, Tsuyu ate while Ochako talked about her last few days. How she was sent into a collapsed building and that she had broken a rib from having to jump to avoid rubble. Tsuyu looks up but her worry is quickly waved away.
“Somebody with a healing quirk was there. It’s not as strong as recovery girl’s but its more of a bruise now than a break.” Ochako flexes and says, “I’m nice and strong don’t worry.”
Tsuyu snorts, wiping at her face. She puts her chopsticks down, looking at Ochako. “You said you wanted to ask me something. What is it?”
“Oh! Well, you see...I had this all planned what was I going to say…” Ochako crosses her arms, puffing her cheeks out as she tries to remember.
“You’re trying to propose, aren’t you?”
“Well!” Ochako squeaks, her face flaming. “Yes! But I wanted it to be a surprise and sweet and I wanted to make a whole speech about how you’ve always made me so happy and that even in high school I thought I would love to marry you someday and I think I would really love to have you with me for as long as we feel is good and...and...will you marry me, Tsuyu?”
Tsuyu nods, smiling contently. “You’ve made me happier than I could imagine and we are going to fight and disagree because our jobs are dangerous. But I think we work together well enough to be able to make it. I’ve loved you for almost seven years now. I don’t know if I could love anyone else like I’ve loved you.”
Ochako couldn’t help but bury her face in her hands. “You should’ve made the speech it was so much better than mine.”
“Yours was nice. I love you. I can’t wait to call you my wife.”
Ochako stood up and leaned over, pressing a kiss to Tsuyu’s forehead. She mumbles against her hair, “And I can’t wait to call you my wife!”
