Insult to Injury

Summary:

In which Izuku is injured, and then he gets sick too.

[Prompt 4: Insult to Injury]

Work Text:

With both his legs in casts, Midoriya Izuku is unable to go to class. For the last two days, he has been stuck in his bedroom, bored and being visited occasionally by Recovery Girl to speed up his healing (his injuries are so severe she can’t heal him completely, so she’s only doing it little and often). So he’s in pain and painfully bored and wishes he could just get up and go to class.

But at least he gets a lot of attention when lessons are open, and Class 1-A come back to their dorm. Because then there is a knock on the door and a load of his classmates come wandering into the room, waving and grinning and chatting about nonsense.

Today, he is visited by Tenya, Denki and Tsuyu. And, of course, Ochako.

His girlfriend is the one who has been keeping him sane through all of this, ever since he fell from a great height during Hero training six days ago, she was by his side all the time, from cradling him and trying to calm him down as he screamed in agony, his shattered legs raging with pain almost as bad as the pain the first time he used One For All, to being by his side in the hospital, visiting him every day for the four days he was stuck there, and now visiting him in his bedroom whenever possible. He loves her so much, he really does.

“How’re you doing, man?” Denki says, throwing a bag of candy at Izuku.

“I’m okay. Where are you getting all this candy?”

Denki grins. “If I told you that, I’d have to kill you.”

Izuku rolls his eyes.

“You look a bit better,” Tsuyu says. “Is it because you’re on less painkillers?”

“I think so, yeah.”

“That makes sense, ribbit. I mean, you look much more alert today.”

“Hello, Midoriya,” Tenya says, nodding his head. “I’m glad to see you’re on the road to recovery.”

“Thanks. And trust me, I am too.”

“Hey, Deku!” Ochako says, leaning down to give him a kiss.

Denki wolf-whistles and Tsuyu laughs. Iida rolls his eyes at the pair of them.

And Izuku goes bright red, making Ochako smile.

“Glad you’re on the mend,” she says.

“Me too,” Izuku says, and he sneezes.

Everyone flinches, including Izuku. Where did that come from?

“Are you okay?” Ochako asks.

“I’m fine,” Izuku says, pretty sure it was just a random sneeze. At least, he hopes so.

---

By the evening, Izuku realises it wasn’t a random sneeze. His nose has been getting congested, and is now so bunged up he has to breathe through his mouth. The aching that is spreading through his body clearly isn’t all from his injuries, because that has got worse too, so now all of his limbs hurt, not just the broken ones. And he keeps sneezing, having to blow his nose so frequently that Izuku has totally run out of tissues.

When Recovery Girl enters his bedroom (she not only heals him, but is helping Izuku use a bedpan five times a day, something he finds utterly humiliating), she notices his predicament.

“Ah, it looks like you have a cold,” she says. “Probably the last thing you need right now.”

Izuku nods, and sneezes again. “Um, do you have any tissues?”

“Of course,” Recovery Girl says, handing him a packet of tissues.

Izuku takes them, smiling gratefully, and blows his nose. “Thanks. Is there any way you can get rid of this cold for me, please?”

“Sorry, but my Quirk doesn’t work on viruses. I’m afraid you’re just going to have to wait for it to go away.”

Izuku sighs, wondering if things can get any worse.

“Now, do you need to sue the bedpan?”

Yeah, it totally can.

---

The next morning, Izuku is hacking up mucus with every cough that jolts his body, snot streaming from his swollen nose. He could barely sleep, what with the cold and the pain in his legs, and Izuku is almost falling asleep now, at 11am.

But at least today there are no lessons, so his girlfriend and fellow classmates can visit freely. Currently, Ochako sits on the edge of his bed, holding his hand.

“Poor Deku,” she says. “I hope you feel better soon.”

“So do I,” he says, voice nasal from his cold. “But… this helps.”

“What does?”

“You being here, with me,” Izuku says, and for once it isn’t his cold that makes him blush.

And Ochako smiles and presses a kiss to his sweaty forehead.
