Storm

Summary:

When a storm wakes them in the night, Miles and Phoenix talk.

Work Text:

Miles is awoken in the middle of the night by a rumble of thunder. Given how loud the noise is, the storm must be close. He groans and opens his eyes, wanting to go back to sleep but knowing this blasted storm is going to keep him awake. So Miles sits up in bed – and notices Phoenix isn’t in bed.

Turning his head, he finds his husband stood by the window, the curtains open, and staring out at the raging storm. Rain beats against the roof and runs down the window, and a flash of lightning in the distance lights up his face for an instant, showing tired eyes and a fascinated expression. At moments like this, Phoenix looks more like the hyperactive boy of their childhood or the awkward rookie attorney Miles went up against years ago than the very competent lawyer and boss he is today. He looks so vulnerable and innocent, and Miles has to wonder what their lives would have been like if they weren’t torn apart as kids and led down very different paths in life.

But Miles is torn from his thoughts when Phoenix says, “Miles?”

He looks at his husband, raising an eyebrow and pretending to be annoyed. “What is it, Wright?”

“Did the storm wake you up?”

“It certainly did. But unlike you, I’m not a child who is totally fascinated by a simple thunderstorm,” Miles says.

Phoenix laughs, wandering over and plonking onto the bed beside him. “Okay, Mister Grumpy. But it is pretty cool.”

“Whatever. I want to go to sleep.”

“Well I’ll just go outside and tell Minster Storm to shut up so Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth can go to sleep,” Phoenix says, laughing.

Miles rolls his eyes, lying back down. To his surprise, it doesn’t take him very long to fall asleep.

When he awakes the next morning, the storm has finished and Phoenix is beside him. And Miles look at his wonderfully annoying husband and smiles.

“Good morning, Wright.”

Phoenix grins and kisses him. “Morning.”
