Work Text:

Shouto’s room was very plain. Not as plain as Ojirou’s, mind you, but still only furnished with necessities. When 3A first moved into the dorms, he decided to keep the traditional style and make it as similar to his room back home as he could so that it was easier to get settled. It wasn’t like he could really call that place ‘home’ but he found the familiarity comforting. It reminded him especially of Fuyumi and Natsuo, and the moments when he was allowed to see them.

Denki’s room, on the other hand, was his own kind of eclectic. Anything and everything that caught his eye, or he thought could be useful was chucked in it. Things were haphazardly strewn around the place, clothes were at home on the floor, and his bed was hardly ever made. It gave Denki’s room a character that Shouto’s didn’t have, a feeling to it that Shouto found hard to describe. Which is why more often than not he was in Denki’s room when he needed to rest.

It surprised him how the sheer amount of stuff Denki had actually fit in his room when he was taking up space too. Especially when he stayed up late to make sure Denki went to bed, he messed up his sleep schedule by sleeping whenever. Well, ‘whenever’ within reason. From after training until dinner was prime shut-eye time, and after a few hours of study later in the evening too. Nobody seemed to notice or care if they ever saw Shouto stop at the third floor instead of the fifth, but that was mostly because Iida was always on the field when he tended to visit/crash his boyfriend’s room.

“’M sleepy.” He said upon entrance to Denki’s room. The other boy looked up from his laptop and moved over on his bed to give Shouto some room.

“Sleepy is like, your number one mood, I don’t think you need to declare it.” He laughed when Shouto walked right up to his bed to flop next to him.

“My number one mood is tired. Sleepy is number two, there’s a big difference.” His voice was muffled from lying face-down on the bed.

“I don’t see the difference. Are you going to be up tonight?”

Shouto hummed an affirmative as he grabbed the other pillow. He noticed Denki tapping the keyboard rapidly, much faster than he normally does. He leaned over to peek at what he was doing on the screen, but Denki moved the screen away and trapped Shouto under his arm so he couldn’t see.

“Are you even doing work?” He mumbled into his sweatshirt, wriggling and trying to get more comfortable.

Denki was quiet for a second so Shouto knew immediately that he was about to say some bullshit, like a meme or something.  “…Depends”

He managed to look up, “On what.”

“Does cool math games count as work?” Denki was still hiding his screen, but Shouto’s quiet shaking was an indication that it wouldn’t matter.

“No, but it’s a mood.” He laughed, moving Denki’s arm off himself but not moving from the spot next to him.

Denki shoved him lightly “Shou, stop saying mood! That meme is ooooold!” he whined.

“Number one mood is tired, number two is sleepy, and mood number three is coolmathgames.com.”

“Stooop.”

Shouto was lucky he always took the side by the wall, because Denki would’ve no doubt shoved him off the bed by now. He was laughing too though, so he moved the pillow again so he could lie down and Denki could get up without waking him. The pillow and matching bedspread were an atrocious orange, which was very startling to him when he first started sleeping in Denki’s room. Since he was so used to the white and green of his own room, waking up in such a colourful clustered room took a fair bit of getting used to. Once he got comfortable again, he groaned quietly. Denki made a ‘what’s wrong’ sound and Shouto nodded to his stuff, still by the door.

“I need to charge my phone.”

Denki sighed as if he was annoyed. “So you want me to charge it.”

“I mean, no? You can just plug it in while I’m asleep?” Shouto propped himself up to stop him, but Denki was already crawling over the end of the bed to reach for his phone.

“Am I just a charging station to you?” He asked, with at least 10 times more drama than he needed to. “Fine! But only because I’m the best boyfriend ever.” He already had the charger in his mouth when he sat back down, which Shouto pulled out by the cord so he could kiss him. He only meant for it to be short, but Denki smiled into the kiss and man was he not gone when he did that. Before he knew it, his hands were in the other’s hair and he was being pulled closer to the edge of the bed. He had to make a conscious effort to pull away and put  the charger back in his boyfriend’s mouth with a small smile. “Don’t do it too fast and ruin my charger this time. Night.”

Denki poked his arm accusingly. “I paid you back for it didn’t I? I’ll wake you up at 10.”

Shouto hummed and hugged the garish orange pillow before shutting his eyes.

-

He had a feeling that it wasn’t quite 10pm when he was woken up a loud knocking on the door. Keeping his eyes shut, Shouto ignored the sound and tried to go back to sleep.

“Excuse me Kaminari!” Oh, it was Iida. He heard the sound of the chair rolling across the floor and Denki quietly mumbling “Geez, he’ll sleep through anything.”

He could tell Denki was treading quietly and trying not to ‘wake’ him, but Iida’s voice was still as loud as ever when he opened the door. “May I borrow your disc player so I can practise my aural English exercises? I have asked Kouda, but he doesn’t have one, so I thought – good evening, Todoroki.” Iida’s voice fell quiet; Shouto could only guess it was because of the seeing him there, it wasn’t often the students stayed in others’ rooms.

“I think he’s still sleeping.”

“Still? Asleep? It’s only 6:30, though.” Iida paused before lowering his voice. “Then again, it is Todoroki. Does he sleep in your room regularly? As your class president I should be aware of the likely whereabouts of the class in case of an emergency!”

Shouto was glad he was facing the wall, otherwise they would’ve seen him crack a small smile at Iida’s worry for the class that he couldn’t help. The sound of the two talking was a bit muffled - Shouto was still in that space between waking up and being awake where you were warm and comfy and could still easily go back to sleep.

“Uh sometimes? He crashes anywhere though. And he’ll get up at 10 then go to sleep again at 2 in the morning.” It was very unlike Denki to speak quietly, Iida too, so what they thought was quiet was pretty much Shouto’s normal speaking volume.

“That’s… very unhealthy!”

There was a light thud by the door, maybe Denki had leaned on the doorframe. “Right? I try to tell him but noooo, just because I get less sleep than him 'I can’t talk' or whatever."
Ah, Shouto thought, Denki knew he was awake. He usually pulls that card in the ongoing debate between them, but he still stood by his point that Denki needed more sleep, period. Forcing himself to be more awake, he turned over to face them.

“If I sleep now, then I can spend more time with you without everybody else around. You’re up anyway, so I just sleep at different times.”

Still in the doorway, the other two looked on, shocked at what he said. Denki’s hair started to stand on end - he did that when he was embarrassed and Shouto found it adorable - and Iida started sputtering.

“Oh, well, I- I apologise for waking you then! I’ll erm, go downstairs and ask Midoriya for his disc player instead, sorry for the interruption!” He made many erratic hand gestures and excused himself quickly.

Shouto shrugged and turned back over.

“Hang on, you can’t just say cute shit like that and then go back to sleep, excuse me.” Denki sat himself as the end of the bed to face him. “That’s why you stay up too? It’s not just to bug me to go to sleep?”

“Partly.” Shouto hummed again. “Mostly. It’s not that hard to believe.”

Denki grinned brightly and chucked the blanket at the end of the bed over to him, it was winter after all. “You're adorable," he said quietly, nearly to himself. "I’ll wake you in a few hours, niiiight~.”

Shouto smiled back and found sleep again just as easy always.
