Work Text:
Midoriya stared down at his desk, trying to listen to the things Iida and Uraraka were saying behind him but ultimately failing. “What do you think, Deku?” Uraraka’s broke his thoughts and he finally turned to see the two on his dorm room's floor.
“Huh?” The words left his mouth before he could even think about what he was saying. Uraraka frowned at him and he felt his face heating up in response. “S-Sorry, I’m just a little distracted I guess.”
Uraraka smiled now, knowing very well that blush on his cheeks meant more than she had originally thought. She wasn’t an idiot, she noticed the somewhat erratic behavior that came from Midoriya whenever a vested party joined up.
“Oh really,” she smiled. “Why is that?”
Midoriya felt himself growing more grave by the second. How was he supposed to admit what was distracting him to Uraraka and Iida? He could barely admit it to himself. Midoriya sighed and let his head fall onto his desk. “It’s nothing.”
“Clearly it’s not nothing,” Iida spoke up. “Are you feeling ill?”
Midoriya rolled his eyes, unknowingly to the two behind him. “Yeah, I’m sick.”
“No he’s not,” Uraraka huffed. “He’s clearly got something that he isn’t telling us.”
“Is that true Midoriya?” Iida’s voice piped up again and Midoriya rose his head off of the desk before a very shameful feeling surged through him. He didn’t know how to look at his two closest friends and tell them that he was head over heels for their classmate Todoroki.
Uraraka must have been able to see through the back of his head, because she noticed something about Midoriya that she didn’t normally see -- pessimism.
Midoriya may have been quick to get in his head, but he was just as quick to get out of it and it usually lead to the idea that he was a pretty optimistic person. Although, what Uraraka didn’t know, is that it tended to be just something for self-defense. He figured if he could act optimistic enough, then it would be true. That didn’t always work though, this being one of those instances.
“I’m sorry guys,” Midoriya sighed and for the first time turned around to see both of their worried expressions. “It’s just.. it’s complicated and I don’t exactly know how to go about sharing it.”
“Unless you’re secretly a villain, it couldn’t be that bad!” Uraraka smiled. “Nothing you could have to admit will you get judged for. We care for you, Deku, and we want to make sure that you’re happy.”
“Yeah, I can second that.” Iida said. He slid his notes off to the side and gave Midoriya his full attention. His lips pursed together and he nodded his head.
“We-Well..” Midoriya muttered, he could feel his face start to turn red. “I kinda think I have a crush on Todoroki.”
“T-Todoroki!?” Uraraka’s eyes immediately widened and so did Iida’s, but he didn’t have much that he could say about it. “Since when?”
“I don’t know.” Midoriya shrugged.
“You know,” Iida spoke up. “That does make sense, your voice sounds a little different when you talk to him and you turn red more often than normal. The other day he thought you were feverish and iced his hand to put it on your head.”
“It doesn’t matter, there’s nothing to be done about it.” Midoriya sighed. “Let’s just, forget I mentioned it and continue on with studying.”
“No way!” Uraraka smiled. “We’re gonna secure you a date with Todoroki-kun!”
“No, no!” Midoriya immediately went into panic mode. “Don’t you dare say anything to him!”
“Nonsense!” Uraraka clasped her hands together. “As your friends, we are also your wingman and wingwoman! So we will get you a date with Todoroki!”
“Todoroki doesn’t like me that way, Uraraka.” Midoriya sighed. “We’re just friends.”
“For now !” Uraraka clicked her tongue against the inside of her cheek as she finger-gunned Midoriya. “After all, you’re Deku! Who doesn’t like you?”
“Well,” Midoriya, starting to get huffy and upset, threw his arms up in the air as he spoke. “What if being me isn’t enough?”
Uraraka blinked a few times, exchanging looks with Iida. “What do you mean?”
“Nothing, forget I said anything.” Midoriya sighed as he turned back to his notebook. “Can we just keep studying please?”
“O-Okay,” Uraraka frowned but finally complied. She didn’t mention it again to Midoriya, figuring that anything that she said would only make the situation worse. She didn’t say anything else until Iida and her left Midoriya’s room soon after, heading back to their respective rooms. “Iida, we have to do something.”
“Midoriya asked us not to,” Iida commented. “I think we should respect that.”
Uraraka sighed. “So he can just suffer?”
“He’s not suffering ,” Iida rolled his eyes. “It’s a crush, Uraraka, it’s not that extreme.”
“You saw how distracted he was when we were studying, and you can’t deny the fact that he’s been acting a little off for a while now,” Uraraka replied. “Besides, what about what else he said? That’s not like Deku.”
Iida shook his head once more. “We would only be making the situation worse by infiltrating. After all, he asked us not to, we should respect that.”
Uraraka sighed, she didn’t agree with Iida, but she finally stopped pushing as she excused herself to her room for the evening. It wasn’t until she was standing at her own door that she considered bothering Ashido, and that lead her to the pink haired girl’s dorm late at night.
Of course, when she opened it, she was all smiles and seemed to still be wide awake. “Oh hey Uraraka! Are we being too loud in here?”
“Oh, no,” Uraraka said, only now noticing that Kirishima, Kaminari, Jirou and Sero were sitting in different spots across her room, gentle indie music playing as their notebooks were laid out. “Sorry, am I interrupting something?”
“Nah!” Kaminari laughed. “Come in, not like we’ll do well on the test anyways!”
Uraraka welcomed herself into the room and took a seat on the floor beside Jirou and found herself a little out of place among them, but if anyone knew what to do, these five would. “I actually needed some help with something.”
“Oh, did something happen?” Kirishima asked.
“Ah, well I kinda need something to happen,” Uraraka laughed nervously. “This may not be my place to tell you guys, so I would really appreciate it if you didn’t mention it to anyone.”
“Your secret is safe with us!” Ashido smiled as she closed the door before plopping down on her bed. “So tell us, what’s the issue?”
“Well, Iida and I were studying with Deku earlier and he just.. seemed off.” Uraraka said. “I think he’s been acting a little weird for a couple of weeks, but maybe that’s just me.”
“I mean, I watched him straight run into the classroom door because he was so caught up in his own thoughts, but is that not like him?” Kaminari asked.
“Now that you mention it,” Sero continued. “Midoriya hasn’t been performing very well during the more physical parts of our class, it seems like he’s always caught up in thought.”
“But once again, is that not like Midoriya?” Kaminari asked.
“Well that’s what I thought at first,” Uraraka commented. “That Deku thinking isn’t out of the ordinary, but what is out of the ordinary is letting it impact him negatively. Usually it helps him, recently it’s only been dragging him down.”
“Okay,” Ashido spoke up. “So do you know what it is? Or is that what you need help with?”
“Well, Iida and I got it out of him.” Uraraka answered. “The issue that we’re having is that he doesn’t want us to do anything about it, and Iida agrees with him! But I really think something should be done about it.”
“What’s his issue then?” Jirou asked.
“I swear this doesn’t leave this room!” Uraraka said as she glanced around at everyone. “I mean it, Deku will be very angry with me if he finds out I did anything.”
“We won’t say anything,” Kirishima agreed. “Just our with it.”
“Okay, Deku has developed a crush on Todoroki-kun,” Uraraka said and the reactions in the room were a sight to be seen. Jirou immediately began choking on her spit, and sparks flew off of Kaminari, Ashido cupped a hand over her mouth to keep from laughing. Kirishima’s eyes were wide like the moon and Sero dropped his phone onto the floor before sharing a similar expression with the red haired boy. “Well say something!”
“I didn’t expect that,” Jirou coughed. “In fact, I’m sure I didn’t hear that right.”
“No, you definitely heard it right,” Kirishima replied. “So wait, Midoriya is gay?”
“You think you know a guy,” Ashido hummed.
“I don’t know if he’s gay,” Uraraka commented. “All I know is that he has a crush on Todoroki and I want to do something about it.”
“Talk about having a crush on one of the worst possible people,” Kaminari sighed.
“He could have a crush on Bakugou,” Sero added.
“Oh, right.”
“What’s so bad about Todoroki?” Uraraka asked.
“Well,” Ashido sighed. “Todoroki is nice and what not it’s just..”
“Todoroki is difficult,” Kirishima finished. “Todoroki has a hard time reading social cues, and I doubt he has any experience with relationships or.. feelings? Besides, it’s hard to say whether or not Todoroki would reciprocate those same feelings to him.”
“We should ask Yaoyorozu,” Jirou chimes in. “Besides Midoriya, she’s pretty close to Todoroki. And it’s not like Todoroki would mention anything about Midoriya to Midoriya.”
“Hm,” Ashido tapped her chin. “That’s a pretty good idea! Why don’t you ask Yaoyorozu to come over? Tell her it’s urgent.”
“Okay,” Jirou replied as she pulled out her phone.
“Gah, Todoroki,” Kaminari laughed. “Of course it would be the most difficult person to read.”
“I think Todoroki and Midoriya would look nice together though,” Ashido as she raised her fists up in excitement. “After all, they contrast each other in a way that seems complimentary!”
“Sure,” Kirishima replied. “But how do we know if Todoroki would be interested in Midoriya like that .”
“That’s where Yaoyorozu comes in!” Uraraka smiled. “Even if Todoroki has never mentioned it to her, maybe she can ask him.”
“She’s coming over,” Jirou replied as she set her phone down. “Okay, so let’s say that Todoroki swings that way, what do we do then?”
“Yeah, what are we supposed to do after that?” Kaminari sighed. “Not like any of us can force them together without it being suspicious.”
“That’s what I wanted Ashido’s help with,” Uraraka answered. “I figured she would have some sort of knowledge on what to do that Iida and I don’t have.”
“Oo,” Ashido smiled. “I like this. Project: Get Midoriya a date with Todoroki!”
“So, G-M-A-D-W-T?”
“No,” Ashido sighed. “Obviously our code for it will be something inconspicuous. I’m thinking Glitter Cupakes!”
“Absolutely not,” Kirishima laughed.
“Glitter Rocks,”
“Done.”
“Okay, so project.. Glitter Rocks..?” Uraraka laughed a little at the name. “So what’s the plan Ashido?”
Before Ashido could answer, there was a tap at the door and upon opening it, revealed Yaoyorozu standing with a very serious look on her face. “What is the emergency!?”
After explaining the situation to Yaoyorozu, she seemed a little irritated, but not enough to offer help to the group in front of her. “You just want to know about Todoroki?”
“Well, before we engage our plan,” Ashido said. “We have to know if he would even be interested in guys at all, let alone Midoriya!”
“You should make us cool radios!” Sero smiled and Yaoyorozu sighed at another time that she would be talked into making something for the group of idiots she considered to be her classmates and ultimately get in trouble for it.
“Ah, fine,” Yaoyorozu sighed. “So let me get this straight, you want me to ask Todoroki if he’s not?”
“It sounds awful when you say it like that,” Kirishima laughed nervously. “Maybe don’t be so blunt?”
“Are you kidding?” Sero sighed. “Todoroki won’t understand it otherwise.”
“Okay, okay,” Uraraka sighed. “So, just find out how he feels about Midoriya, because that’s our next step. Then we will reconvene.”
“It’s really important that Midoriya doesn’t find out about any of this!” Ashido reminded the group. “So don’t act like you know, and don’t be an idiot.”
“Why are you looking at me?” Kaminari whined. “Guys I’m smart.”
“Sure,” Jirou laughed.
“Project: Glitter Rocks is a go!” Ashido pumped her first into the air.
————
Midoriya had settled into class after lunch and let out a sigh as he slacked in his chair. He knew that he didn’t do that well in that morning’s test and really didn’t want to have to do any training later on. Honestly, he thought about feigning illness to get out of it, but then they would have him at recovery girl’s office so fast that he would make it back in time to do anything they asked of him.
Lunch was especially quiet as well, considering it was just Iida and Midoriya. Uraraka lied for the sake of ‘Project: Glitter Rocks’ and Todoroki had spent the lunch period talking to Yaoyorozu who was trying to be blunt but not too blunt with Todoroki. Just enough to get the information out of him that she wanted.
Midoriya feared the worst about it, thinking that Uraraka had something to do with it and that was enough to make his stomach lurch. To think that Uraraka wouldn’t listen to a word he said and simply would’ve done the exact opposite .
“At least it’s Friday,” Midoriya mumbled to himself, thankful that he would have the weekend to recharge from this day of paralyzing anxiety.
“Hey Midoriya,” Kirishima smiled. “You feeling alright? You don’t look too hot.”
“Huh?” Midoriya turned his attention to the smiling boy in front of him. “Oh, ye-yeah.. I’m fine. It’s just.. nothing, I’m alright.”
“Shitty Deku,” Bakugou grumbled a few desks away. “If Kirishima wants to waste his time asking if you’re feeling okay, the least you could do is give him an honest answer.”
“Bakugou, it’s not a big deal! Stop being a jerk about it.” Kirishima sighed before turning back to Midoriya and smiling. “Lemme know if you need anything, dude.”
“Sure..” Midoriya muttered and watched Kirishima turn back to his own desk. Midoriya sighed as he turned to face the front. It was at this point that Todoroki and Yaoyorozu returned to the class, each looking a little flustered and mildly uncomfortable. Midoriya found it odd how many people peaked up when they noticed Yaoyorozu’s face as well Todoroki’s but didn’t say anything.
The rest of the school day chugged along, and Midoriya managed to pull out a decent performance in the afternoon. However, he did find it odd how much Todoroki was failing during his own work; normally Todoroki wasn’t set off by a whole lot.
Midoriya returned to the dorms after class, wanting to just lay in his bed and waste away until Monday but a text from Uraraka suggested that wouldn’t be happening.
“Movie night..” Midoriya sighed as he read her text. “Do I really have to?” He knew the answer, so there was no point in him asking her. It only meant he had a short few hours before returning downstairs to where they would watch the movie.
Midoriya only had about thirty minutes before he had to go downstairs, and he sat at his desk; staring down at his empty homework. He found himself so distracted these days, maybe Uraraka was right — he should do something. He should at least be able to get it off of his chest, but on the other hand, the fear of only that happening riddled him with worse anxiety. Todoroki laughing at him or refusing to even speak to him again made it that much more difficult. He didn’t want to lose a friend by his own selfish desires.
“This sucks,” he spoke out loud, he spun his pencil through his fingers and was so lost in thought he didn’t even notice the knock at his door. It wasn’t until the second round of taps that he blinked away from his thoughts and moved towards the door.
When he opened his door, he was surprised to see a Todoroki standing there. “O-Oh, Todoroki.”
“You sound like you don’t want to see me,” Todoroki replied. “Do you want me to leave?”
“Ah!” Midoriya’s eyes widened. “N-No! It’s okay, did you need something?”
“I just wanted to ask you about something.” Todoroki shrugged a single shoulder and Midoriya swore he felt his entire body feel like it was being wrung out like a towel, only no water poured out of him, only his shaking nerves.
“Sure, sure,” Midoriya nodded before stepping out of the way. “Come in.”
Todoroki had been in his room a number of times before, but he seemed to never totally adjust to the All Might paraphernalia that hung everywhere and looked like it had been vomited across the room. Midoriya sat on his bed and allowed for Todoroki to sit in his desk chair.
“Is everything okay?” Midoriya asked, despite how he felt for Todoroki, he wouldn’t let that get in the way of being a good friend.
“Yeah, everything’s alright,” Todoroki nodded. “I’m just a little confused, is all.”
“Oh,” Midoriya replied. “About what?”
“I was talking to Yaoyorozu earlier today,” Todoroki began and Midoriya felt his stomach lurch, as though he knew exactly where this was going and this is where Todoroki said he developed feelings for someone else. “And she brought up something that I wasn’t expecting, now I’m just confused.”
“Oh..” Midoriya muttered for the upteenth time during their conversation. He figured he might as well get over the hump. “What kind of thing?”
“Like..” Todoroki sighed. “A romantic thing.. I think? I don’t know she seemed very on edge about the whole thing.”
“Maybe she was trying to see if you have feelings for her.” Midoriya suggested and swore he didn’t mean for the words to sound as venomous as they did.
“No, I don’t think that,” Todoroki shook his head. “Quite the opposite, actually.” Midoriya blinked a few times in surprisal but didn’t say anything. “I mean, that’s what I thought at first, but when I told her I wasn’t interested, she said she wasn’t asking if I was interested in her.”
“What was she asking then?” Midoriya felt his body tense up more, more than he thought it physically could.
“Yaoyorozu thought I was gay or something like that.” Todoroki replied and Midoriya’s eyes widened. If he wasn’t focusing so much on losing all of his composure, he might suspected that Uraraka had some sort of hand in this. “And at first, I went to say no.”
“A-At first?” Midoriya tilted his head to the side.
“Yeah, but then I stopped and thought about it,” Todoroki replied. “And I don’t think that I’ve ever been interested in girls before.”
“That doesn’t mean that you’re gay, Todoroki,”
“I know,” Todoroki replied. “But I think I’ve been interested in other guys before, at least I think so but I can’t really tell.”
“How come.. you can’t tell..?” Midoriya mumbled.
“I don’t think I really understood what it’s like to be romantically interested in someone.” Todoroki said. “Not until Yaoyorozu and I talked about it, at least.”
“What did she say?” Midoriya asked.
“She asked about someone specific,” Todoroki said and this was the first time that Todoroki’s face turned a little red. “She asked me how I feel around this person and when I described it to her, she pointed out things that I hadn’t noticed before.” Midoriya felt his eyes widen, like he didn’t know what was going to happen next and his heart was beating so hard he could hear it in his ears. “So I figured I’m at least interested in this one boy, even if I’m not gay. I figured you would be a good person to tell about it, because you’ve always been a good friend so I wanted your thoughts.”
And cue the shatter that surged through Midoriya. A good friend , he couldn’t believe he just got pushed off to the side by Todoroki. “O-Oh, well I mean, I support you no matter what Todoroki!” Midoriya’s voice seemed very obviously nervous and the smile very forced, but at least he managed to not explode. “Whatever you decide to do is fine by me!”
Todoroki seemed a little bothered by the response, and Midoriya noticed but he didn’t give him the time to point it out. “Well,” he said while standing. “I appreciate your support. Do you wanna head down to Uraraka’s movie now?”
“Oh, right, sure.” Midoriya commented. “I’m gonna grab a blanket this time, but if you’re okay with waiting for me you can stay there.”
“Sure.” Todoroki replied. “Uraraka said that tonight’s movie selection will be really good.”
“Hm?” Midoriya raised a brow. “She didn’t tell me anything about the movie.”
“She said I would like it.”
“What kind of movies do you like Todoroki?”
“That’s just the issue,” Todoroki replied. “I don’t know. I like that movie with the little yellow squishy people.”
Midoriya paused. “Despicable Me..?”
“No the one that’s just about them.”
“The-The Minion Movie?”
“Yeah, I don’t like that they’re called Minions, but I like them.” Todoroki nodded and Midoriya started laughing. He tried to hold it in, he swore he did, but he couldn’t. “Why are you laughing at me?”
“I-I just didn’t expect you to say that was a movie you liked!” Midoriya laughed as he held his sides. It felt so free and Midoriya for a moment felt alright, and so did Todoroki. Things seemed so calm, but when brought back to reality, the tension was replicated.
“What kind of movies do you like?” Todoroki asked.
“I like scary movies,” Midoriya shrugged. “I like action movies too.”
“Scary movies?”
“Uh.. Yeah,” Midoriya nodded. “A lot of people don’t know that, or at least they don’t expect me to.”
“I don’t like scary movies.” Todoroki shook his head. “Usually people think that I’m alright with watching them, but to be honest, I’m not very good with them.”
“Really?” Midoriya smiled. “That’s surprising Todoroki, you’re a very interesting person.”
“I think you’re interesting too,” Todoroki said and Midoriya’s face turned a little red before the two left his room and continued downstairs to where the movie would play. Uraraka smiled wide when she saw the two walking into the room and patted the spot on the couch that she saved for the two of them.
“Hey guys!” Uraraka said to them. “I saved you seats.”
“Cool, thanks Uraraka.” Midoriya smiled before sitting on the couch and Todoroki taking the spot on the other side of him.
“I think that makes just about everyone,” Uraraka said as she looked around the room. “So we should get started!”
“What are we watching?” Midoriya asked.
“Oh! Right, we’re watching A Quiet Place!” Uraraka laughed. “Sorry Deku!”
“Oh I’ve seen that,” Midoriya replied. “It’s pretty good.”
“Wait, really?” Kirishima turned his head to see Midoriya at this point. “You’ve watched this movie?”
“Yeah I have.”
“Oh,” Todoroki muttered. “What is it about?”
“Basically some shit that detects sounds.” Bakugou grumbled from his seat beside Kirishima. “Probably’ll have Deku pissing himself.”
“Why?” Todoroki asked, he had a good idea what the answer was, but he was hoping it was wrong.
“It’s a horror movie,” Uraraka answered and Todoroki’s eyes widened a little bit. “I figured you’d be alright with something like this, right Todoroki?”
“O-Oh, yeah, right.” Todoroki nodded but noticed the smirk across Midoriya’s face.
Midoriya leaned over to Todoroki and whispered to him. “Hide behind the blanket if you need to.”
“Thanks..” Todoroki sighed as they clicked the lights off and the movie began to play across the screen. Midoriya pushed half the blanket onto Todoroki who already had a death grip on it. It wasn’t even scary yet, and Todoroki already looked like he was having an existential crisis.
Midoriya couldn’t help but laugh a little, after all, he wasn’t anticipating this kind of reaction from Todoroki.
When the first jumpscare happened, most of the room shouted and Todoroki immediately sank his head down and covered half of his face with the blanket, scooting so he was pressed tight against Midoriya’s side.
“Okay fuck this!” Bakugou shouted as he stood up and exited the room.
“Bakugou,” Kirishima whined. “Come back!”
“No fuck this !” Bakugou growled and Kirishima sighed as he followed the blonde out of the room.
It was about thirty minutes later when Midoriya turned his head to Todoroki who looked practically miserable and leaned over to taunt him. “Todoroki, you alright?”
“Dandy.”
“Are you so scared that you need to hold my hand or something to make it through this movie?”
It was meant to be a joke, but the response surprised him. “I mean, I wasn’t going to ask but I would really appreciate it if you would let me,” Todoroki answered and Midoriya’s eyes widened a little.
“Oh.. Sure,” Midoriya responded and found Todoroki’s hand underneath the blanket, and entwined their fingers together. Todoroki would squeeze Midoriya’s hand right when the scary parts came, and would hold it close to himself any other time.
After another scare and sharp scream/jump from Todoroki, he dug his face into Midoriya’s shoulder. “I hate this..” Todoroki mumbled. “I hate this so much.”
“It’s alright, just relax,” Midoriya smiled at him in the dark light of the movie. “It’s just a movie and I’m right here.” Todoroki lifted his head up only to see Midoriya’s smiling face and he felt calmer, scooting closer to him despite already being pressed against him.
“Okay,” Todoroki nodded, he left his head on Midoriya’s shoulder and glanced at the television from the edge of the blanket. When it fell off of Todoroki’s shoulder, instead of fixing it himself, Midoriya repositioned them so he could put his arm around Todoroki’s shoulders and hold the blanket up. This also involved Todoroki sinking even further into Midoriya’s side in a place that they could both find comfort in as well as Midoriya giving his other hand to Todoroki for him to grip onto.
The scares didn’t make Todoroki jump as high, or scream as loud and when they did appear, all he would do would be to hide his face or grip harder onto Midoriya’s hand.
When the movie finally ended, Todoroki sighed in release before he finally realized how close he was to Midoriya. “Oh-Oh I’m sorry..” he muttered and Midoriya shook his head and smiled.
“Don’t be sorry, I had plenty fun.” Midoriya smiled and Todoroki swore something wrong was happening to him because of how his heartbeat picked up.
“I think that movie hurt me,” Todoroki said before placing a hand to his chest.
“Wow Todoroki!” Uraraka laughed. “I wasn’t expecting such a reaction out of you, you were so scared!”
“He tried his hardest,” Kaminari laughed. “Gosh your face during some of those scenes was so funny!”
“Be nice,” Midoriya laughed. “Scary movies aren’t for everyone.”
“Yeah but you held your own like a real master of horror movies!” Ashido laughed.
“Ah,” Uraraka stretched out. “Man, I don’t care, I’m gonna hit the hay. I’m exhausted.”
“Okay, goodnight Uraraka.” Midoriya smiled and she winked at him before exiting the room. He was a little confused, but passed it off.
“I’m gonna go make fun of Bakugou,” Sero chuckled and Kaminari followed him, desperate to see how he was fairing now.
Eventually most of the room had cleared out when Midoriya stood up off the couch and threw his blanket over his shoulder. Todoroki stayed perfectly still on the couch for a moment, and Midoriya laughed a little. “Are you alright, Todoroki?”
“H-Huh?” Todoroki turned his head up. He wasn’t used to feeling so flustered and so terrified at the same time. He wasn’t expecting to need to be comforted by Midoriya.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Midoriya said. “You got pretty scared during that movie, huh?”
Todoroki didn’t answer, he felt too much shame and simply glanced off to the side. “How about we go watch something to calm you down?”
“To.. Calm me down?” Todoroki raised his eyes up to a smiling Midoriya.
“Sure, that’s what my mom always does.” Midoriya laughed. “She goes and watched a comedy after a horror so when she goes to sleep she doesn’t have bad dreams. And I don’t want you to have bad dreams, do I?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay, well I don’t want you to have bad dreams,” Midoriya said. “So come on, we can watch a movie on the laptop in my room.”
“Okay.” Todoroki replied and climbed off the couch, following beside Midoriya to his room.
“If you knew you were going to be scared, why didn’t you say something?” Midoriya asked. “We wouldn’t have made you watch something you didn’t want to.”
“I figured it wouldn’t be that bad.” Todoroki sighed. “I feel so embarrassed.”
“I feel embarrassed all the time, it’s alright,” Midoriya laughed and Todoroki tilted his head in confusion.
“What do you mean?” Todoroki asked as the two entered Midoriya’s room and he pulled his laptop out.
“I do stupid things all the time,” Midoriya shrugged. “I’m kinda embarrassing. I don’t like feeling embarrassed, but I’m always doing something dumb.”
“I don’t think you do stupid things,” Todoroki replied.
Midoriya laughed a little nervously. “I get myself into messes all the time. Gosh, the amount of times I’ve broken my bones.”
“I think you just think with your heart.” Todoroki replied in a calm tone that made Midoriya’s eyes widened before he turned his head to Todoroki. “I always admired that, because you’re always so selfless and then you blame yourself for the bad things that happen to you.”
“Oh..” Midoriya’s eyes widened.
“Like you don’t have to be doing this right now, but you are.” Todoroki replied. “Just because you don’t want me to have a restless sleep.”
“Well we’re friends Todoroki,” Midoriya replied. “We’ll always be friends.”
“Hm,” Todoroki hummed. “I don’t know if that’s what I want.”
Hearing this sent chills down Midoriya’s spine and his eyes grew comically wide as his jaw slacked. He must have been quite the sight, looking like he needed to say something, for something to be clarified but not knowing exactly what to say. He didn’t want to turn his head because he knew that Todoroki was standing right beside him. “Midoriya,”
“Y-Yeah?” Midoriya managed to choke out.
“I wanted to say it earlier, but I guess I just couldn’t do it,” Todoroki’s voice was quiet and he felt so different than that scared Todoroki that Midoriya was scrunched next to on the couch a few moments prior. “I don’t want to be friends.”
“I-I..” Midoriya trailed off; not knowing to do with the thoughts with his head. “Did-Did I do something wrong..?”
“No,” Todoroki replied. Midoriya felt his finger under his chin and Midoriya’s face turned up to Todoroki. “I just, want something more.”
“Ah..” Midoriya’s voice came out as pure air and nothing more, like he didn’t know what to do with the bright red on his face or with the questions in his head. “Some-Something more?”
“Yeah.” Todoroki nodded his head. “Midoriya, I want to be more than just a friend to you, I’m interested in you.”
“Todoroki?” Midoriya mumbled.
“Yeah?”
“Are you, were you,”
“Take your time.” Todoroki said but was very surprised when Midoriya’s eyes welled up with tears as he was overwhelmed with different emotions. Todoroki’s eyes widened as Midoriya pulled away and began wiping his eyes. “Midoriya?”
“I-I’m fine!” Midoriya sniffled.
“You’re crying.”
“I’m alright, I’m alright!” Midoriya waved his arm around as he tried to dismiss Todoroki’s concerns. He stood there with his head gently tilted to the side and his brow laced with concern.
Todoroki walked up behind Midoriya and placed a hand on his shoulder, leaning around to see his face. “Did I do something wrong?”
“No, it’s not that,” Midoriya sniffled.
“If you just wanna be friends, we can do that too.”
“It’s not that either.” Midoriya sniffled. “Gosh I’m being an idiot.”
“No it’s alright,” Todoroki said, although he was very confused, he didn’t think anything worse about Midoriya. “Why are you crying?”
“I really like you Todoroki,” Midoriya sniffled. “And I’ve played it over a thousand times in my head, but I think there’s a reason I never said anything.”
“Why is that?”
“Because I’m me and you’re you .” Midoriya was furiously trying to wipe his eyes, but the tears just didn’t stop. “I always wanted to tell you but what stopped me was the reminder that you can do better. You’re smart and strong, and you’re definitely capable of more than I am and I don’t wanna be your dead weight!”
Todoroki’s eyes widened, this wasn’t the outburst he was expecting, but hearing it made Todoroki frustrated because how could Midoriya feel like that.
Todoroki grabbed Midoriya’s wrist and spun him around so they were face to face and with wide eyes. In the moment, Todoroki had no other thought than to shut Midoriya up by pushing his lips against the shorter’s, which caused him to squirm and a small squeak came out of him. “If I thought that, I wouldn’t be standing here right now,” Todoroki said as he pulled away but only for a moment before kissing Midoriya again, this time the green haired boy was more still but before he could settle, Todoroki pulled back one more time. “If I didn’t admire you I wouldn’t be here. If I didn’t want to be with you, I wouldn’t.”
“Todo —” before Midoriya could say anything else, Todoroki kissed him again, this time Midoriya’s eyes fluttered shut and he managed to find some solace in the moment.
Todoroki pulled back so their noses were nearly touching, and in a low tone spoke.“Don’t you dare , talk about yourself like you’re not enough. Like you’re not even enough for me, for you, or for anyone. It’s all in your head, and don’t get caught in that. That’s not who you are.”
“T-Todoroki..” Midoriya mumbled.
“I’m not going to just accept the fact that I don’t get to have you because you think that you’re not worth it. That you think I don’t want you, when I do .” Todoroki continued and Midoriya could see the intensity in his eyes that made the shorter reconsider anything he’s ever thought before. Like there was some comfort, something like home in Todoroki’s eyes.
“I’m-I’m sorry.” Midoriya muttered.
“No apologies,” Todoroki replied. “Just change it.”
“O-Okay.” Midoriya nodded.
Todoroki stood up straighter as he took a step away from Midoriya. “I’m sorry I kissed you without asking, I only thought that —”
Midoriya grabbed his face and this time it was his turn to shut Todoroki up with the collision of their mouths. This time something about it felt hungry and needy, but when Midoriya pulled back he gripped Todoroki’s chin to keep him steady. “Don’t apologize for kissing me, you idiot.”
Todoroki smiled and held onto Midoriya’s waist as he pulled his body tight against his own, lowering his head into the crook of his neck and taking in his sweet scent. “Okay.” Was all Todoroki said and Midoriya found himself to be all smiles.
“Do you want to watch that movie now?” Midoriya asked. Todoroki nodded his head before pulling away from Midoriya, smiling fondly at him as they sat in Midoriya’s bed, leaning back against the wall as it played on the screen.
Midoriya had fallen asleep before the movie finished, and Todoroki managed to wrap him in a blanket and lay him down and when he went to climb off the bed and exit quietly, Midoriya cling to his waist and tugged him down. Although, there was something about being entangled with Midoriya that Todoroki didn’t seem to mind, and he fell asleep running his fingers through Midoriya’s curls and Midoriya’s arms holding tightly around him.
