“We will manage,” echoes Shouto. “But we shouldn’t have to, in the first place.”
“Shouto.” Blue and grey eyes land on Izuku, who just sighs. “You know there isn’t much we can do about that, right? Don’t beat yourself too much. We just… we weren’t prepared for the climb up to take this long, were we?”
In which Izuku Midoriya and Shouto Todoroki, both 23, have dinner in their shared apartment. It's leftover katsudon.

Summary
“It smells like memories here.” Izuku’s soft voice echoes in the silence of the empty halls. “Doesn’t it?”
Izuku takes a deep breath as if to prove his previous point, but the air is inexplicably heavy. Here, where there will always be marks of their past together, breathing doesn’t come as easily as it should. Funny how those things work.
Izuku and Shouto can't seem to move on from the bland halls of their high school.
At least, there won’t ever be a ‘too late’ for them, because that would entail consequences they aren’t quite ready to think about.
Almost a decade after their graduation, they're the only ones that keep coming back.
“Always.”
It’s barely a whisper, but still crystal clear among the cacophony of their feelings. They have long since accepted to not question how those things work. “I won’t ever look at anyone that isn’t you.”
Tonight, that will change.
Izuku looks at Shouto.
Shouto looks at Izuku.
After all, it's the last time they will dance this waltz.

Summary
He heard the creaking before he saw the door open. Shouto had already frozen where he stood by then.
"Anyone there?" Midoriya spoke from the small opening in the door.
Shouto couldn’t see much past the faint orange glow that came out of the room, and it was somehow more entrancing than the bright yellow from before. Suffice to say, he didn’t answer Midoriya.
If the door closed, Shouto would have just taken that as his sign to leave. It was the same trick he always used whenever a decision troubled him: leaving it up for someone or something else to decide for him. It made things a lot easier.
Midoriya opened the rest of the door, slower this time so as to not make any noise. Shouto didn’t know if he lucked out but, either way, he let go of a breath he didn’t know he was holding when their eyes met.
"Hey, Shoucchan. Did I make you wait for long?" Midoriya asked, no sign of surprise at seeing Shouto standing in front of his door at god-knows-what hour.
Or: Sometimes Shouto just needs a hug. Lucky him, he has a very huggable best friend, sort-of-crush right there.

He’s okay with it, really, he is. It hurts a little, sure, not having a party like rest of the kids his age, but at that point, Izuku’s just used to it. He’s accepted it. Accepted that he probably won’t ever have friends and won’t ever have a birthday party again. People are just meant to disappoint him.
That’s fine. As much as Izuku wants a party, as much as he wants friends to clap him on the back and give him presents, as much as he wants to walk home to a darkened room before everyone jumps out and yells surprise and flicks the light on and as much as he wants the companionship and trips to the arcade with friends everyone his age has, he’s fine with not having one. It's fine.
He's fine.

Summary
Hours later, when the sun has completely gone down and Shouto steps out of the shower for the third time, his hair is the pitchest, mattest black he’s ever seen. He marvels at it in the foggy mirror, tilting his head this way and that, not even bothered by the blotchy stains of dye left around his hairline where he’d been a little sloppy. It's not bad for an amateur self-dye job.
Slowly, Shouto brings a hand up, and covers the left side of his face.
The person who stares back at him is just a plain teenage boy, with a plain face, and nothing remarkable about him.
Shouto dares to smile.
Shouto Todoroki runs away from everything he's ever known. He ends up finding a friend, and himself.
