Succeed

Summary:

Sebastian starts crying when he remembers some of the things his father said about him, and Kay tries to help.

Work Text:

Sebastian sighs, folding his arms across his chest. His father’s words (telling Sebastian he is useless and pathetic and will never achieve anything) echo around his head like he only just said them, despite having broken contact with his father over a year ago. He is supposed to be looking over case notes for a big case in court tomorrow, but all Sebastian can focus on is his father. Sebastian hunches forwards, tears burning the backs of his eyes.

And because he is a pathetic person who cries all the time, the tears blur his vision. But Sebastian wipes his eyes before the tears can spill over, sick of being the crybaby who sobs over pretty much everything. But now the tears are flowing he can’t stop them, a sob escaping his throat. Sebastian scrubs at his eyes but continues to sob, crying even harder when he remembers his father again, remembering how Father always said a crybaby like him could never succeed at anything.

“Seb?”

Only one person calls him that. Sebastian sniffs and spins around on his swivel chair, and spots Kay slipping into the house through the window (he’s long since given up trying to understand why his girlfriend uses windows like doors). She dashes over and wraps Sebastian in a powerful hug.

“Seb, what’s wrong?” Kay says, stroking his hair.

He sniffs again. “I was just, uh… thinking about some of the th-things my father said to me.”

“What, all the bullshit about not being able to succeed?” Kay says and Sebastian nods. “Well remember who you are.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re a strong prosecutor who fights for justice, and… you’re the kindest boyfriend I’ve ever had.”

Sebastian blushes through his tears, and Kay kisses him.

“It’s okay,” she keeps whispering, until his tears stop.
