“Mr Starbuck?” Juniper says in a timid tone.
When Mr Starbuck doesn’t look up from his book (which looks to be a very technical book about space travel), Athena tries instead. “Mr Starbuck!”
Jumping, Mr Starbuck looks at the two teenagers. “Huh? Sorry, girls, I was out of it just then. What was it?”
“We were wondering if—”
“You’d like a cake!” Athena yells, expertly finishing her girlfriend’s sentence.
Juniper opens the cake tin, showing him a selection of iced cupcakes. If you know Athena and Juniper, it soon becomes obvious who iced the beautiful ones and who iced the… slightly wonky ones.
“Yeah, I’d love a cake,” Mr Starbuck says, smiling. “Thanks, girls.”
But as he reaches to take a cake, Athena snaps the tin shut, nearly clipping his fingernails.
“They’re fifty cents each,” she says, grinning.
“Huh?”
“What she means if… we’re trying to run a cake making business,” Juniper says, talking to the floor. “And we thought we’d start small. So… you need to buy one if you want one.”
“I… see,” Mr Starbuck says, clearly a bit puzzled. “Um… hang on a sec.” He digs into his pocket and pulls out two quarters. “I’ll have one, please.”
Athena grins, doing her best impression of a person behind the counter at a store. “Of course, sir.”
Juniper lets Mr Starbuck take a cake, and Athena takes his money.
“Pleasure doing business with you,” they say together, and Juniper giggles.
That afternoon, the pair sit in Athena’s room in the Cykes residence.
“Five dollars is pretty good, isn’t it?” Athena says, grinning as she counts their cash.
“Yeah, it is. We could make a lot of money out of this,” Juniper says, smiling.
Athena gives Juniper a kiss. “Great idea, Junie.”
“Thanks, Thena,” she says, kissing her back.
