Enemy

Summary:

As the Chief Prosecutor, Miles gets asked a lot of questions. However, he never expected to become the office’s solution to the prosecutors’ relationship dilemmas.

Work Text:

“Herr Edgeworth?” Klavier Gavin calls, knocking on his office door.

Becoming the chief prosecutor has actually done nothing to avoid traffic to his office, and he sighs as he puts down his pen. “Yes?”

“Can I ask you a question?” Klavier says.

“If you must,” Miles says.

Klavier smiles. “Well, I was just wondering… uh… is it… okay for a prosecutor to date a defence attorney?”

“Why do you ask?” Miles says, frowning.

“I mean, it’s not… not allowed, is it?”

“No, some people find it bizarre to be in a relationship with someone you have to face in court, others say it is unprofessional, and many make one too many ‘sleeping with the enemy’ jokes.”

Klavier stares at him. “And… how do you feel?”

“Well, since I have been married to a defence attorney for five years and got promoted to chief nonetheless, I see no issue in it. Now go ask out Mr Justice and leave me alone.”

His eyes widening, clearly wondering how Miles knew who he has feelings for, but smiles and nods his head. “Thank you, sir.”

Miles rolls his eyes and goes back to work. That night, he tells Raymond all about it and Raymond laughs his head off.

A year or so later, Simon Blackquill is acquitted in the strangest trial Miles has ever seen. He watches the way Simon interacts with Athena Cykes, and has a feeling he knows where this is going. Sure enough…

“Mr Edgeworth, can I ask you a favour?” Simon asks, knocking on his door.

“Yes, you can date Ms Cykes,” Miles says without looking up. “If you want more information, ask Prosecutor Gavin.”

That makes Simon laugh, but he stops when Miles stares at him. And as Simon leaves, he can finally get on with his work.
