Work Text:

I'm an angel with a shotgun
Fighting ‘til the wars won
I don't care if heaven won't take me back
I'll throw away my faith, babe, just to keep you safe
Don't you know you're everything I have?

Eijirou knew this is wrong.

Angels are just messengers, God’s to-go guys. Unlike what humans believed, angels don’t interfere on world on the ground unless they were tasked to.

Well, except for few special cases.

There are angels who develop fondness for a specific human. Then never leave their sides until they die.

Humans called them “Guardian Angels”.

But his fellow angels called them “halfwits”.

Eijirou is one of them. He knew this is wrong. He knew this is dumb. Because humans are mortals, and when they die, they go somewhere angels can’t. Then leave the immortal angels alone and empty. There are only a handful cases where they grew out of it, but the rest never did, leaving them sad and unable to work properly or even work at all.

Eijirou knew nothing good will came out of this. But he wonders how something so wrong feels so right.

It all started one summer when Eijirou noticed a green haired kid tailing a blonde one.

“You’re amazing Kacchan, your quirk’s so cool” the green-haired praised his friend. “I can’t wait for my quirk to show up, I hope it’s as cool as yours” he added.

“You wish Deku,” the blonde kid interjects. “Whatever your quirk is, I’m still going to be better than you, I’m still going to be the number one” the blonde declared with overflowing confidence.

The green-haired freckled kid just beamed at his friend with admiration. The kid’s smile was so pure it rivalled those of angels’ and Eijirou’s heart melted.

Since that day, Eijirou never left the kid’s side.

“You should give up on his quirk ma’am.” The doctor said.

The boy in front of Eijirou has his world fell apart. And never in his entire existence had Eijirou felt so powerless. He wants to hug him, comfort him, tell him he could still be a hero. Eijirou would do anything, anything, that would stop the boy in front of him from crying. But he can’t do anything other than be with the boy until he cried himself to sleep.

“Kacchan are you okay?” the boy extended his hand to help his childhood friend who fell on the river. “it would be bad if you hit your head”

Eijirou felt like this scene will change the dynamics of the two childhood friends.

***

“Word of advice Deku, if you really want a quirk so bad, why not took a swan dive from the roof and wish to a have a quirk in your next life” said the smug blonde before going out of the door.

Never in Eijirou’s existence had he felt the urge to smite a human right here and there.

Eijirou was right. Everything changed between the two childhood friends. The blonde became hostile to the green-haired. Bullying, insulting and pushing him around. But despite all of this, the green-haired one still puts the blonde on a pedestal. Despite the negative traits of the blonde, his passion for victory still catches the other’s admiration.

Eijirou wished he could read minds. He wants to know what the blonde is thinking. What happened? Why did he change? Why is he bullying his childhood friend? Why does he tell him to jump off the roof?

The inability left him frustrated because he knew what the other party was thinking. After the doctor’s diagnosis, the boy was pitied on his condition, discouraged on his dreams, and ridiculed on his determination. Seeing someone so passionate at something and was not listening if someone says otherwise keeps the kindle of hope in the poor boy’s heart. But how long will this kindle endure when the reason why it’s still there wants to get rid of the one keeping it?

The green haired kid used a different route on his way home. And Eijirou doesn’t feel good about it. There’s just some sort of sinister vibe that the dark tunnel is giving him. He keeps eying the surrounding vigilantly, but a voice from behind startled him.

“A medium sized invisibility cloak.” Said the nasty sludge that is coming out from the holes of the manhole cover.

“A villain?!” the kid gasped then he tried to run away.

But he’s not fast enough.

“Don’t worry I’m just going to take over your body” said the slime as he attacked the poor kid, attempting to take over his body through his mouth.

“Calm down. It’ll only hurt for about 45 seconds.”

Never in his whole existence did Eijirou felt this kind of panic. Wars and plagues can not compare to this.

The sludge slowly engulfs Eijirou’s ward.

“You’ll feel better soon” the villain unnervingly assured his victim.

 Eijirou felt helpless. Again.

He looks around to find something or someone to help the kid.

But the tunnel is empty.

“I can’t breathe” was written all over the kid’s face as he manically clawed the sludge away from him.

“You can’t grab me. I’m fluid” the villain chastised like the kid was just some pet.

He’s gonna die

He’s gonna die

I can’t let him die

They say before you start a war
You better know what you're fighting for
Well baby, you are all that I adore
If love is what you need, a soldier I will be

A loud bang distracts the villain from taking over his prey’s body. A large whole formed on his sludge-like body near his face.

“WHAT WAS THAT?!” the villain furiously looked around the dark tunnel to find the offender. His gazed landed on a winged boy holding a long slim tube slowly approaching him.

“Leave the boy alone!” commanded by the winged boy. Now that he’s nearer, the villain noticed the glowing crimson feathers on his wings and above his black shoulder length hair was a pale gold halo-like glow.

The aura of the other boy sends eerie shivers to the villain. But he musters a false confidence to hide his fear. “Or else what boy?” he challenged.

A large bullet shot near his eyes was the winged boy’s answer. Now registering to the villain that the boy was not holding a tube but was rather a shot gun.

The sharked-teeth boy growled as if to threaten the villain.

“If you don’t leave, the next shot will be at your eye villain, it’s the only solid part of body as of the moment, isn’t it?”

The threat seems to be effective as the villain scrambles out of the tunnel, tossing his prey aside on the process.

The angel immediately attends to the unconscious boy. Slowly tapping his check to wake him up. The boy is safe, Eijirou just wants to see the boy awake and speak to him.

Before everything’s too late.

You see, angels are relatively free beings. They are free to do anything unless they are specifically told not to. And one of the things they were not allowed to is to physically manifest in front of a human without explicit permission.

And the punishment? Banishment. Where to? Eijirou is going to find out any minute soon.

But Eijirou’s worry eased out when the green haired boy speaks.

“A-angel” he chuckled nervously. “Is this what death looks like?” He inquired.

The angel can’t help but laugh. He’s going to miss this boy.

“You’re alive Izuku.” The angel assured as he assists the boy into sitting position.

Confusion took over the boy’s face.

“B-but –?” the boy’s inquiry was stopped by the angel’s hushing.

“You’re alive and promise me you’ll continue to live until you become a hero.”

The boy just blankly staring at the angel, his confusion growing by the second.

“Promise me.” The angel desperately pleaded. Holding the freckled cheeks with both of his hands.

The boy just nodded not having anything better as a response.

The angel beamed brightly at the boy. Concealing his weariness of his own predicament.

“You’re going to be hero like All Might, you’re going to be a hero who save lives with a smile. Save many people the way you saved me, Izuku.” The angel instructed then proceed to hug the confused (now crying) boy tightly.

“I’m going to miss you, Izuku.” The angel whispered before he kissed the boy on the top of his curly hair.

Eijirou is already feeling the fading of his essence. He shut his eyes, pleading.

“Please take care of yourself, love.”

BREAKING NEWS: MIDDLE-SCHOOLER SAVES CHILDHOOD FRIEND FROM A VILLAIN. THE QUIRKLESS KID WAS NOT QUIRKLESS AFTER ALL.

***

Eijirou wakes up with a jolt.

He's having weird dreams again. And on top of that, he felt tears running down his cheeks. Again.

It’s almost a year now since he’s been having those dreams. Dreams of him being an angel and always following, guarding, a green haired kid. All of them ending with him, or the angel him, dying.

It’s weird how his heart aches and his tears flowing every time these dreams end. It's as if he’s hurting for both the boy and the angel.

Eijirou shakes his head to clear his mind. He must get ready now. He shouldn’t be late for his first day in high school.

***

Eijirou thinks he’s still dreaming.

He managed to be early for class and settled to watched his new classmates come by one by one.

But things got weird when a familiar face came into view. A face that he has only seen in his dreams for these past few months.

And it got weirder when Eijirou notices that the green haired kid, Izuku Midoriya, keeps stealing glances at him. (The kid thinks he's being subtle, but he's far from that.)

Eijirou’s curiosity made him follow the other boy home.

“Uhm, Kirishima-kun?” the boy queried as he halted on the pathway and faced the red-haired boy following him.

“Yes?” the other boy replied.

The green-haired sighed at the other’s boy attempt to look clueless.

“I’m pretty sure you’re not from around here. Are you following me?” the freckled boy asked. The shark-teethed boy chuckled nervously and scratched the back of his neck as a response.

“Midoriya, I know it’s weird but, have we met before?” Eijirou asked, his stance serious while holding the other's gaze.

The green-haired boy beamed at him fondly. His crimson wings glowed with delight. Then replied.

“Is it going to be weirder if I say I want to ask you that too?”

Notes:

Izuku's quirk (Crimson Wings) may or may not have been Angel!Eijirou's final miracle.
