    He feels a heavy boot in the middle of his back and, as he gets his hands under him, starts to push up, he feels a sword point in the back of his neck.

    “You know,” says a conversational voice in slow, thickly accented French, “I’m in a terrible mood. It’s not made any better by not knowing how many of the rest of my brothers are left alive. How do you think I should serve you?”
