Chapter Text
Jungkook clutched tightly onto his letter of acceptance, technically he didn't need it but he wanted to show people that he had proof he was accepted into 방탄 고등학교 (trans: Bangtan High). Just in case the school took a look at him and thought he was too wimpy to actual be apart of the most expensive, but best schools in all of Asia. Bangtan High was actually the only school in Asia that included both Quirk and Quirkless students.
What is a 'quirk'? A quirk wasn't as amazing at it sounded, there are some people born with a specific gene that makes them have a quirk. Jungkook didn't care too much about the biology, he just knew that he was 'gifted' with his quirk. Making him stand out, but also 'cursed' since he possessed—what most people would call—a 'dark' quirk. Jungkook in particular, was a soul manipulator.
He was under the impression that since he got into Bangtan High he'd be able to somehow disguise this ability and be part of the Quirkless students, maybe he'd stick in the shadows. Surely, there wouldn't be any bullies in Bangtan High? People were a lot more civilised in the upper social classes, right?
Jungkook didn't know, he only managed to score a place at Bangtan High because his grades were outstanding. The only reason for that was purely based on the fact that he didn't have a social life, so he spent most days inside and studying. Jungkook didn't mind that. In fact, he kind of liked the idea of school. It was nice to sit in quiet peace and not have people socialize with him.
So there he sat, on a 'private' school bus with other Quirk and Quirkless First years, going to school. Luckily, the school didn't have a dress code because Jungkook did not have the money for new uniform every year. He was good at sewing though, just a quick mention.
He reread the letter over and over during the summer, so happy to attend the best school in all of Asia. But now as he sat in the bus, anxiety loomed over him.
He didn't have time to deal that right now, he was still trying to find out about the school itself. Jungkook shifted in the uncomfortable bus seat and turned around, poking his head out to look at the other First years. He was in one of the 5 school busses heading to the school. Some students were already at school, some going by car. Some even coming in the next day- but Jungkook didn't want to miss out on the induction and tour.
He noticed that none of them were actually in their seats. The other first years were all jumping around, standing up or kneeling in their seats to try and talk to other people. Jungkook sat back down and looked at the driver, he was in the front seats. This was only because he knew that no one else liked those seats. But Jungkook loved them, he like looking through the giant front windows.
Daydreaming was something that Jungkook learnt he was both great and terrible at. It depended on when though. In the middle of a crossing whilst cars are coming at you? No. But in a 4 hour bus journey? Yes, bring it on! Jungkook smiled quietly to himself.
He looked over at the empty seat next to him and made a funny face in the air. He grinned and shook his head looking out of the window. Explaining his Quirk.
So Jungkook can control souls. That's what he does, soul manipulation. It's his forte, it's been his thing since he was born. The easiest way to explain how his quirk works is by watching the Marvel classic, Doctor Strange. Read a comic book, or watch the movie.
Jungkook likes to call his 'soul', his subconscious. The easiest explanation is by saying that everyone has two parts to them. They have their conscious which is their physical being. Hair, body, eyes, features, shadows. Then they have their subconscious or soul which is connected to them.
Jungkook's soul isn't connected to him. Jungkook's soul sits next to him, walks beside him but never in him, like everyone else's. He doesn't actually know the reasoning behind that, but he doesn't want to find out.
All he needs to know is that his subconscious would never hurt him or others and that's fine. Yet people call him 'dark' and 'scary.' Also why Jungkook is always ready to defends Slytherins, himself. His quirk is deemed dark and he hates that. But, there's nothing that can be done, there's no point in trying to explain it to people.
He'll wait till all the judgemental people slowly die out.
Jungkook opened up his phone contact and smiled when saw a message from an internet friend of his. Kim Yugyeom. Yugyeom is actually from one of the competing schools of Bangtan High, he attends 樸金英學院 (Chinese) 박진영 학원 (Korean) (trans: Park Jinyoung Academy), in China.
Yugyeom was annoyed when Jungkook told him he had become accepted into Bangtan High instead of Park Jinyoung Academy because he really wanted to meet face to face. Jungkook even considered trying out for Park Jinyoung Academy to not let his friend down, but he realised that he had to do some things for himself. Still, maybe since both schools were competitors of each other, they'd be able to see each other somehow. Maybe on school trips? Jungkook didn't know how private schools worked.
He looked up at the flashing neon lights at the front of the bus, telling him and the rest of the First years that they'd be getting off in ten minutes. Jungkook smiled nervously, shoving his loose papers in his backpack. All his packing and essancials were already at the school, shipped a week earlier before his arrival. Once again, he was amazed at private schools.
Jungkook was the first person to get off the bus. He was immediately greeted by a very handsome boy, who towered over his skinny, little frame. This boy must have been someone important, like a Head Boy or something. He gave Jungkook a welcoming smile, making the younger feel a lot more calmer.
'He's got dimples,' Jungkook thought. Feeling the presence of his subconscious behind him nodding vigorously. Jungkook smiled to himself, always in a better mood when his subconscious was with him.
"Hi, I'm your School Head Boy!" he introduced, once everyone was out.
'Called it!' Jungkook thought.
"My name is Kim Namjoon and I'll be showing you all around, giving you the basic tour. You can ask questions any time you're confused, but hopefully we'll get everything covered. I understand that some of you are Quirks and some are Quirkless students. That's fine because you'll bunk with anyone, unless compromised of safety," Namjoon explained.
Jungkook nodded and walked around the buses, immediately stopping in his tracks when he saw the school. It. Was. Huge. The school itself was situated in this giant forest, surrounded by green vegetation. But at the front- basically, we've come to a modern Hogwarts? Jungkook thought. His subconscious seemed to agree so Jungkook tried not to fanboy as much. He grinned delightedly and walked inside of the building. Getting a thoroughly detailed explanation of everything in the school by Namjoon.
"This is cool, huh?" a boy whispered excitedly from behind Jungkook.
Jungkook turned around to face the boy who looked too excited. He had light pink hair and wore a stripy white and blue top, making him appear much smaller than he already was. Jungkook, a little shy, merely nodded. "I'm Park Jimin," he introduced, sticking his hand out.
Jungkook shook his hand firmly and gave Jimin a smiled, "Jeon Jungkook."
Jimin grinned, making his eyes squint into little crescent moons shapes, "Double J's? You're one step into Superhero territory," he chuckled.
Jungkook blushed, "oh- I'm no superhero..." he smiled. His subconscious from behind Jimin looked at Jungkook with support and told him talk more. Encouraging him.
"Oh, you're quirkless?" Jimin asked.
"No. I have a quirk.. It's just I'd never have the makings to become a superhero."
Jimin nodded, "me too. I mean, I have the powers to be one, but I don't think I'd want to be apart of that lifestyle, you know?" Jungkook merely nodded. He decided that he liked Jimin. "You're not much of a talker, are you?"
Jungkook blushed, shaking his head.
Jimin merely gave him a smile, "that's fine. I'm new here- well of course you know that; but I'm transferring here from my old school. I'm joining the second years," Jimin explained.
"Cool..." Jungkook cringed. Why would 'cool' be a good way to respond? That makes no sense- you are so-
"Thanks!" Jimin grinned, cutting off Jungkook's internal panic. "My best friend actually goes here, he and this other dude. Apparently they're the school's trouble makers, so I'm adding on to their shenanigans. That's right Jungkook, remember me yeah? Park Jimin, I'll be the next best school prankster," Jimin proudly stated.
Jungkook chuckled, "okay."
Jimin grinned, "I like you kid. You're not bad."
Jungkook merely nodded, following the rest of the first years, with Jimin tagging along. He looked around at the giant school and couldn't help but feel a little intimidated.
"Why don't we have a 15 minute break? You guys meet back here and we'll sort out the Houses and Dormitory units by then, okay?" Namjoon asked. Jungkook nodded and watched Namjoon walk towards a boy with pitch, black hair.
Jungkook looked around at the crowd of around 140-ish students, hoping he'd find Jimin but couldn't. He pouted and shrugged, turning to look at his subconscious who was boredly sitting cross legged on the ground. The boy laughed quietly and shook his head, he looked at his wrist watch and timed how long it'd take to go to the toilet and get back in time.
Jungkook walked up to Namjoon, about to chicken out and run away when he turned around. "Toilets?" he asked.
"Aah, they're just down there-" Namjoon pointed towards the left side of the hall. Jungkook and walked over there even though he still had no clue where he was going. He was just too scared to ask for more directions.
Why did I do this? I don't even need to use the toilets anyway... now I'm definitely going to get lost- oh wait they're right here. Jungkook smiled and walked into the toilets, just going into a stall and standing around, doing nothing. He just needed to bide his time.
He looked back down at his wrist watch and realised that he had about 7 minutes to back to the Great Hall. It's what he decided to call it from now on; feeling like a complete Harry Potter nerd. Jungkook walked out of the toilet and washed his hands quickly, he walked outside and frowned- how did I already get lost?
Jungkook gave his subconscious a confused look but it merely shrugged in response. Granted, his subconscious was basically him; so if he didn't know, the chances were it also didn't.
He walked along a corridor feeling like he was going the wrong way so he turned around and ended up at the toilets again. I could always ask? He thought. Desperate times do call for desperate measures. Jungkook saw a friendly looking girl walk in his direction but froze in terror, looking away from her immediately. Nope, not today.
A boy, possibly a year older, walked out of the toilets and almost bumped into Jungkook. "Sorry, didn't see you there. You're part of the newbies right?" He asked.
Jungkook nodded. The boy grinned and nodded about to leave before Jungkook quickly called him back. "Do you know where the Main Hall is?"
The boy turned around and smiled, "uh huh, follow me child!" The boy grinned and happily pushed Jungkook in the direction of the Great Hall.
"Thank you...?"
"Jung Hoseok, but Hobi Hyung is fine!"
Jungkook nodded and watched as 'Hobi hyung' skipped off.
"Now!" Namjoon shouted, getting everyone's attention, "your Houses!"
NEXT TIME ON: QUIRKS
"It's the annual competition held for Quirks!" the lilac haired one explained.
"Yeah!" redhead interrupted, "but there can also be Quirkless students. I heard that the was a new edition from the last competition."
"Um hmm! It's like that competition on that wizard thingy!" Lilac said. "What was it called..." he muttered.
"Triwizard Tournament," Jungkook whispered.
