Work Text:
Hands slammed down on either side of his desk causing his pencil to scrape against the surface of his paper in an unsightly line.
"What the hell, Yagi," the voice above him growled. He placed his pencil down on the paper, closing his eyes with an internal sigh.
"You're going to have to be more specific than that," Yagi said calmly, lifting his eyes to meet the fiery gaze of the redhead before him.
Todoroki grunted, not breaking their intense gaze as he snatched Yagi’s idle left hand from the desk. He held it up in front of Yagi, as if he hadn't already seen the bandages wrapped around the entire length of his arm, from fingertips to shoulder, which was still very much tender under the other's rough grasp.
"What the hell is this?" He repeated gruffly.
"Well, I was hoping you could tell me. You seem to know already," Yagi replied simply.
Todoroki narrowed his eyes at his smartass reply. Yagi knew how to play this game and kept his composure. And that seemed to piss Todoroki off even more.
"You fucking idiot!" Todoroki exclaimed.
"Quick question before you go into a full-on rage," Yagi spoke up, finally able to tuck his left arm away now that it was out of the other's grip. "Can I take a raincheck? I'm trying to catch up on the notes I missed during the last half of class, since I was in the nurse's office. Also, I'm too tired for this right now Enji…"
Yagi could feel the heat emanating from Todoroki as his emotions boiled beneath his skin, fists clenched against the top of the desk in visible frustration. He was unable to speak because of his internal war. Todoroki finally pushed off of the table and stormed across the room, attempting to cool off. Yagi watched him for a moment before picking up his pencil and resumed his task, copying the notes he promised to return later tonight. It was best to leave Todoroki alone when he got like this.
The silence in the room was heavy as Yagi continued to work, glancing up at the other every so often. Todoroki stood by the window, the sun sinking low into the sky now, the orange light highlighting his features.
"This wasn't supposed to happen…" Yagi paused and looked up from his paper to see Todoroki's face cast in shadow, bringing out the intensity of the blue eyes staring back at him from the window.
"It wasn't your fault…" Todoroki looked away and rubbed his face. He looked tired.
Yagi closed the notebooks he had been trying to study from a few minutes later. He couldn't continue to pretend that he was actually learning anything from these notes, especially with the dull pain still aching in his arm. He stood up from his desk and was met with no resistance when he touched Todoroki's arm.
"You were right to call me an idiot," Yagi told him. "I acted before I had the chance to think."
Todoroki huffed in what seemed like amusement, but he was still very much bitter. Whatever Yagi said wouldn't be enough to convince Todoroki to accept that it was simply a training accident. They happened all the time in these hero courses. And while injuries were a part of the training, the two of them promised to never hold back when faced against each other. In the end, Todoroki was still met by Yagi's radiant smile and striking blue eyes. Just like he was now.
Todoroki reached out to pull the other into his arms, earning a chuckle from him as he nestled in under his chin. "You're my idiot…" He murmured into the mess of blond hair.
This was something they both had needed since the afternoon. A moment to just hold each other in silence. While Yagi could spend forever within the warmth of Todoroki's embrace, he was the first to pull away, much to Todoroki's disappointment.
"Come home with me?" Yagi asked him, his tone far too innocent sounding but it matched the hopeful sparkle in his eye.
For the first time that day, Todoroki actually smiled at him. "I'll carry your bag."
