“Onoda.” Imaizumi interrupted him.
The small one stopped speculating about the next episode of Love Hime and turned towards his friend. “Yes, Imaizumi-kun? Do you have any theories as well? Ah! Maybe you think that Arimaru-“
Before the enthusiastic boy started babbling about the series again, he interrupted him again. “It’s not that.” He said, glancing to the side, pursing his lips lightly. Onoda tilted his head, confused. The tall teenager took a deep breath and stared at him in the eyes.
“Do you want to have lunch on the roof?” He asked, almost resigned.
Silence, it wasn’t long but Imaizumi was kind of tense. They were in the corridor since 5 minutes ago at most and there was already a small crowd of girls whispering and giggling at the sight of him, just a few meters of them. Of course, Onoda was so into his anime talking, that he hadn’t even noticed. Upon listening to the proposal, his eyes began to sparkle and a smile of genuine happiness spread all over his face.
“Really, Imaizumi-kun? On the roof? I would love to!” He replied, more excited than the other one would have imagined.
When they got there, Imaizumi remembered how he challenged Onoda to a bike race there. Who would have imagined that it would have gone this way. Not him, at least. They sat and Onoda still had a stunned look on his face, as if Christmas had arrived too early for him. Imaizumi looked at him with confusion. When Onoda noticed he managed to stutter ‘W-Well, it’s just that I always wanted to have lunch here with a friend, like an anime protagonist! But I never…” He cut himself, although Imaizumi already knew what it was. “T-That’s why…ah…uhm…” He laughed nervously and made weird gestures, trying to fill the awkward silence he had created.
Imaizumi squinted (more than usual of course) and without thinking twice, put a hand on his shoulder. This made Onoda even more stressed and he started to stammer “I’m so-sorry, I’m saying weird s-stuff…”
“Onoda. You’re not alone anymore. I am here.”
The nervous Onoda nodded, biting his lower lip. They stood like that for a brief moment, staring at each other, until the climber seemed to remember something and launched a yelp.
“What is it?”
“Ahhhh! I forgot my bento in the classroom! I’ll be right back!” He cried out as went running.
Imaizumi followed him with the eye until he disappeared through the door. He leaned against the wall and sighed. Onoda was certainly a strange guy, he thought to himself and, before realizing, he was smiling just by thinking of the boy. Such a strange feeling. The boy closed his eyes. Well strange feelings for a strange guy, seems pretty much alright doesn’t it? Although, he couldn’t quite decipher what is was… But it didn’t felt bad at all…
He felt that something was off when he opened his eyes again. A humming voice by his side, a melody he knew by heart now. A munching sound, by the same voice, ah, right, he was eating, Onoda was eat-
Imaizumi straightened at once, startling his friend.
“A-Ah, Imaizumi-kun, don’t scare me like that…ahah…haha…”
“Did I…fell asleep?” asked a still confused Imaizumi.
“Yes! By the time I arrived you were sleeping already. Well…taking in account the time I took finding my obento…it’s no wonder…” Onoda seemed both embarrassed and amused by the situation.
“Why didn’t you wake me up when you arrived?”
“Well…you looked very cu- ah! I-I mean, you looked very p-peaceful so I didn’t wanted t-to interrupt that so…y-yeah…” for some reason, his face was getting redder and redder and Imaizumi could swore he saw steam coming out of his ears, not to mention that his stuttering was pretty bad.
But Imaizumi didn’t care about that. He stared at the distressed boy, in awe, finally understanding. Finally grasping what the weird sensation in his chest meant, whenever he looked at Onoda, whenever he thought of Onoda, whenever he was close to Onoda. At first he assumed he was just excited for the boy’s potential, for the things he could do. He had surprised him, back then, when they raced against each other. And he kept surprising him even after then.
That was not what he was feeling now though. It was not excitement for Onoda’s potential what was making him flush, and it was certainly not excitement for Onoda’s potential what was making him stare at his lips, intently. Why was he suddenly so eager to act? Was it the dizziness from having just woke up? Or was this a rare chance that couldn’t be wasted?
Without being entirely conscious of it, he had been leaning closer to Onoda, closer to Onoda’s face, specifically. And Onoda, still trying to explain himself without sounding more ridiculous than usual, hadn’t noticed. But that wouldn’t last forever. A few seconds passed and the glasses boy did.
“I-Imaizumi-kun? Is there something dirty in my face? I’ll clean i…ah, there’s some food in my teeth?!” He covered his mouth, agitated and the blushing that had finally started to disappear, came back, stronger than before even.
The prodigy finally snapped out of his thoughts and shook his head lightly, kind of amused. “Onoda, there’s nothing in your teeth.” He said calmly, in spite of the entire ruckus that was going on inside of him.
Onoda showed signs of wanting to remove his hand but something at the last moment prevented him from doing so. “…Is it on my lips?” he managed to mumble.
Imaizumi sighed harder than usual. “No, there’s nothing on your lips.” He thought to himself with a smirk “Yet.” but somehow ended saying out loud. Crap.
“Yet?!??”
The tall one just stared at him in utter silence and the Onoda understood. “Okay.” He muttered and pulled his hand out of the way. “T-Then, why are you so c-c-close, Imaizumi-kun? I’m n-not exactly complaining but this is unusual of y-you...”
Well, the stuttering was still bad, terrible actually. Imaizumi wanted to say something cool, but he wasn’t sure he would be able to do it now, not anymore. He wasn’t sure how to proceed; heck he wasn’t even sure of what he wanted to do exactly. So he decided to go the ‘usual’ way (a.k.a. the way it happens in the movies) and stared intently at Onoda, trying to give him a clue. He should have known better. The boy was painfully confused, repeating “Eh? Eh? Eh??” and tilting his head from one side to other. Imaizumi was getting a bit impatient so he decided to end it. And by end it, it meant kissing him. He put his right hand on the top of Onoda’s head to stop him from moving it anymore and looked at his lips for one last time; he had to make sure they wouldn’t bump, after all. Then he closed the gap between them with a peck on the lips, closing his eyes somewhere along the way. Just like that, without really thinking. He pulled away softly and looked at Onoda, trying to figure out what he was thinking…well, if Onoda didn’t like it he would just back away, apologize and leave of course. He bit his inner cheek, fearing that possibility, hoping, praying, that was not the case.
Onoda froze for 2 seconds before opening his mouth and closing it, and opening and closing it. Imaizumi was starting to think he had made the biggest mistake of his life but then the climber grabbed him by the collar and kissed him. Now the surprised one was him but he didn’t take too long to react. He took Onoda’s face on his hands, kissing him sweetly, softly. But the smaller one’s grip was desperate so Imaizumi changed his tactic. He put one hand behind Onoda’s neck, bringing his face closer, deepening the kiss. The glasses boy reaction was positive so they kept kissing, deeper and deeper. But they didn’t go any further, none of them dared to. It was nice like this, it was beautiful like this.
When they pulled away, there were panting as if they had finished a long, long race. They didn’t know how much time had passed but everything was silent so they assumed classes had started quite a while ago. They just laid down on the floor, watching the sky, holding hands, fingers intertwined. Neither of them spoke, it wasn’t needed. Not this time.
