“Do you know how to dance?” she asks.
“Only the basics.”
There’s a little flower growing out of one of the cracks in the floor, she notices, a tiny white thing with just a few petals, a few scraggly leaves, shiny in the night.
“Would you teach me?”
Felix’s eyebrows shoot up. “Why me?”
“Because you’re here. And you yourself just said you’re knowledgeable.”
“I thought you said dancing is stupid.”
“It is,” she stammers. “I just wish that I’d gotten the opportunity to learn, that’s all.”
He says nothing for several seconds.
“You don’t have t—”
“If you really…feel like you need it,” he finally says, apparently struggling with his words as he pushes them out of his mouth, “I can try to teach you.”

Summary
On his eighteenth birthday, Ignatz wakes up to someone else’s thoughts in his head. How incredibly rare, and yet he has a heart-mate, someone whose thoughts and feelings he can hear, and who can hear Ignatz’s thoughts and feelings in return.
It’s not exactly a high romantic situation, of course, when the first thing his heart-mate does is block Ignatz out, the second thing his heart-mate does is refuse to share anything about their identity, and the third thing his heart-mate does is tell Ignatz that they resent their connection and wish it had never been felt. Never mind that the war approaches, threatening every aspect of both of their lives and the future they supposedly are fated to share.

Sylvain turned his head and pressed his his face to the top of Ignatz’s head. It couldn’t quite be called a kiss, but it was certainly something approximating one. Like lightning striking a tree, Ignatz felt scorched all over and entirely transformed.
Yes, definitely, over the course of the day he had become dangerously attracted to Sylvain, but Ignatz was pretty sure that attraction had nothing to do with his actual body. Of course it didn’t; Ignatz couldn’t even see. Instead, Ignatz wanted the parts of Sylvain no one else knew about — his little fears and his rambling about landscape paintings and his admission that flirting was a defense mechanism and the way he kept putting Ignatz’s feelings first. <<
Or -- Three times that Ignatz and Sylvain went to the coast of Edmund, learned about one another's greatest fears and desires, and let their worldviews tilt towards love.
