Unsung Talents

Summary:

When Jirou overhears one of the boys singing in the dorms, the 1A girls try and figure out who it was.

Notes:

Okay, I've been listening to quite a bit of Tasuku Hatanaka (Kaminari's voice actor) singing and I just really, really felt like writing this. However, I should mention all the Seiyu's are very talented singers, but for the purposes of this story, I'm only really using Denki's VA as a reference. After all, it's understandable that 90% of voice actors would be good singers, but it seems a little less likely that all 20 teenagers in a somewhat randomly compiled class would be.

However, if you haven't seen Nobuhiko Okamoto singing as Bakugo, you are missing out. (Look all of them up, they're great.) Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Dorm life was a very interesting opportunity to learn new things about everybody. Living in such close proximity to people you go to school with was certainly a recipe for disaster sometimes. It literally took like 3 weeks for somebody to start a food fight. Well, it was less of someone starting a food fight, more Kaminari trying to play a prank on Bakugo which ended with him exploding a cake and then the others just made the most of it. Until class B told their teacher that they could hear them from their own dorms and Aizawa came in frustrated and made them clean it all up.

However, it could also be really intriguing sometimes. The room comparison was proof enough of that. After all, it was very representative of each of them.

Jirou was in her room. She had just tuned one of her guitars and was strumming a song on it to test it out. It always calmed her down. Music helped her focus. It was always hard for her to tune anything out due to her quirk, so instead, she preferred to use sound to just give her something to listen to rather than hearing any background noises. The issue with living in the dorms for her was she couldn’t exactly do it all that much, being surrounded by others. At that point in time though, it was night. The other girls had already gone down to bathe, and she was planning to join a few minutes later. She didn’t know about the boys, but instruments couldn’t really bother them that much considering they were separated quite a bit.

She sighed, stopping her strumming, and replacing the guitar on its stand. She was about to get up and grab what she needed for a bath, before she heard it and stopped in her tracks.

Others wouldn’t have heard it, but she did. Somebody was singing out in the corridor. The noise drifted into her room only barely, but it was enough to recognise that it was to the same melody she had been playing. She didn’t think she was playing loud enough for anyone to hear her, frankly, but she didn’t bother contemplating that.

What held her back, from just getting on with what she planned, was that the singing was actually really, really...good. It was in tune and a nice baritone. It had a sort of roughness to it but it was strangely smooth and soft and she felt like she just wanted to listen to it.

“Who is that?” She mumbled to herself.

She hadn’t heard her class sing before, she never really asked if they could, but it seemed that one of the boys definitely had some skill in it. But she just couldn’t pinpoint who it was and it was frustrating her.

When she heard the person heading down the stairs (probably to get to the baths) she was brought back to the moment, and ran over to her door, opening it and running over to the stairs to try and catch them. She glanced around the hallway, and then made it, almost out of breath, to the staircase. But when she looked down, whoever it was had already left and she was left lightly panting trying to place the voice. She should be able to, but she never knew who could sing or not.

Sighing, she went back to grab her towels and went to the baths.

“Jirou!” Mina called as she entered, steam already making her hair go slightly frizzy, as she got in the bath.

“Hello.”

“You took a long time, are you okay?” Momo asked, concerned.

“Yeah.” She said in thought.

She must have looked a little off, as half of the girls shared glances with each other.

“Jirou. Is everything alright?” Ochako asked.

“What? Yeah, everything is fine.”

“No. You’re hiding something from us.” Ashido said, before splashing some water as she moved closer to her. “Tell us! Tell us!”

“Ooh, what’s it about?” Hagakure asked excitedly from her right.

“Geez. Okay, okay, calm down.” She said, waiting for Mina to back off slightly. “Have any of you ever heard any of the boys sing?”

They all frowned, thinking through their classmates. They had been in the same class for quite a while, they had quite a few memories with everybody. But after a few seconds, they all shook their heads. Jirou was the only one they knew who was interested in music past simply listening to it. None of the boys had ever exactly felt like busting out a song or something.

“Why are you asking us, Jirou?” Asui asked.

“I heard somebody singing upstairs and I couldn’t recognise it.”

“One of the boys was singing?” She nodded. “Were they good?” She blinked but nodded again.

“Let’s figure out who it was!” Hagakure squealed and, evident from the sounds, seemed to be clapping her hands together.

“Yeah! What did they sound like?”

Jirou looked around them. They were all interestedly leaning closer (well, Tsuyu and Yaoyorozu were still sitting back while paying attention but the other 3 seemed a little more intense, especially Mina and Toru). She couldn’t help but think this...wasn’t the situation they should be discussing stuff in. They were all naked in a bath. It could probably wait. But they were all there anyway, so may as well.

“It was kind of deep, but not a bass voice. It was very upbeat but that may be due to the song. It...felt like I should recognise it but I just couldn’t place it. They had a small shake to their voice but it kind of worked? I don’t know really, I was caught off guard.”

“Okay.” Uraraka said, thinking. “So it was in the middle range and happy?”

“Well that likely rules out Bakugo.”

“I don’t think he would sing at all.” Tsu chimed in. “I also don’t get the feeling Todoroki would be walking around singing, specifically upbeat songs.”

“That’s right. Todoroki doesn’t seem too interested in that sort of past time.” Momo said. “If it was low, then it wasn’t Mineta, not that I know much about singing.

“And Koda doesn’t really tend to talk other than to animals.”

“If we’re ruling people out, I doubt Tokoyami or Shoji would be singing either.” Jirou said, joining in with the speculation. “And it just didn’t sound like Aoyama’s type of song.”

“Midoriya?”

“You always hang around with him, Ochako, are you sure you’ve never heard him sing before?”

Ochako shook her head. Deku was never one for things like that. He was very dedicated to the course, most of the time when he was passionate about something, it had to do with hero training. But she didn’t know, maybe he could sing?

“Could it be Midoriya, Jirou?”

She shrugged. “I suppose. The range seemed possible.”

“I so want to see Midoriya sing!” Hagakure said. “His voice is probably so cute.”

“Hold on, let’s not assume yet.” Mina said, a lot more excited now. “There are others it could be. Let’s make a list!”

Tsuyu grabbed her chin and started to think. “So we have ruled out Bakugo, Todoroki, Mineta, Tokoyami, Shoji, Koda, and Aoyama.” She counted it off on her fingers. “So we have 7 possibilities, correct?”

They nodded.

“How about Iida? He’d probably find a way to go for it when singing.”

“I doubt Iida would be singing in the dorms this late at night, honestly.” Momo voiced.

“So, that gets us down to 6, right? Midoriya, Kirishima, Kaminari, Ojiro, Sero, and Sato?”

They all agreed.

“Why don’t we just ask them?”

“Oh come on, where’s the fun in that?”

“I don’t think they wanted anyone to hear them. We were likely the only 2 people on the floor. They may not have known anyone was going to hear. I only did because of my quirk. I could be wrong, but I don’t want to simply ask them.”

“Hold on, what floor were you on?”

She shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. They were on the staircase for most of it. It wasn’t loud enough for me to tell their position, they could have very well been heading to the bathrooms and I heard them on their way.”

They nodded in understanding, before resuming their conversations.

“So, if they didn’t want to know, then let’s think. Who’s most likely to be shy about it out of those 6?”

They all thought for a minute. It was almost impossible that some of them would be awkward about it, although Jirou could just be wrong about them not wanting anyone to hear it. But based on what they knew, one person stood out.

“Midoriya?”

“Let’s find out tomorrow!”

Mina was incredibly giddy all day, and seemed very scheming. Jirou wondered what she had planned and felt a little bad for Midoriya, whatever it was. School went as normal, though Ashido did gather all the girls together during lunch time, wanting to discuss something.

“Okay, I have a plan to get Midoriya to sing!”

“I still think we should just ask all of them.”

“No! I want to figure this out. It’s exciting!”

“They weren’t THAT amazing.” Jirou said, despite wanting to know herself. They did have a very incredible singing voice, even if it wasn’t her favourite she’s ever heard.

“Either way, I have a plan. I just need you all to keep him in the common room after school.”

When the end of school came, they weren’t sure if they were more nervous or anticipating Mina’s plan. She wasn’t going to do something mean, she was really sweet and kind, but she sometimes had a little bit of an overbearing aura which could be intimidating even without her meaning to be.

But hey, they didn’t have much to lose.

“Deku?” Ochako called over to him, sitting on the couch.

He walked over to her with a smile. “What is it, Uraraka?”

“I’m having a little trouble with our homework and I want to get it done before the weekend. Do you think you could help me?”

“Sure!” He said, sitting down and taking his own notes out. “But why don’t you ask Yaoyorozu or Iida? They’re both ahead of me in class?”

“I just thought it’d be nice to study with you.”

He widened his eyes and blushed furiously, but smiled encouragingly and opened his books. “What are you having trouble with?”

“Umm....” she started awkwardly. She hadn’t thought to this point and willed Mina to come. She loved spending time with Deku, but studying was not exactly how she wanted to spend the first hour back from school. “The English work. I just don’t understand it.”

“It’s okay. We’ll work it out together.”

She looked at him and smiled admiringly. Hagakure was right, his singing voice probably would be rather cute. But right now, she may as well take advantage of the situation and actually try and get her homework done so she can relax the next 2 days and maybe get some quirk practice in.

They studied like that for about 20 minutes, before they heard someone going over to them and Uraraka’s heartbeat picked up a little in intrigue now. They looked over and Deku visibly got a little confused and flustered as to why he was suddenly surrounded by 6 girls.

“Hey Ochako!” Mina called. “We were looking for you!”

She sighed. She didn’t want Deku to work out any scheming going on but thankfully, despite her grades, Mina seemed to have some street smarts, meaning planning things like this was probably her strong suit.

“We were just studying.”

“I’ll just leave you to it then.” Izuku said, getting up from the couch, before Mina grabbed his wrist lightly.

“No, it’s okay. Stay!”

“O-okay.”

“Actually, I have something I found online that I wanted to show you!”

“What is it?”

She smiled, and pulled up a video on her phone, holding it in front of him. Ochako leaned in closer and tilted her head. It was a video of All Might. Not a recent one it seemed, but one from at least 10 years ago, or not much less. He was in some sort of establishment, chatting with a few other people. The other girls frowned and leaned closer as well. Clearly, Ashido had shown none of them what it was. Before they could react in any way, applause sounded from the phone as All Might got up and took a microphone from who appeared to be the DJ.

“I know what this is.” Deku said.

“What is it?”

“It was 9 years ago. Paparazzi were all following All Might around when a villain attack broke out, so news channels broadcast this footage one of them took to show what he was doing when he heard of it. It ends with him jumping out the window into action. It’s so cool!”

“You are really knowledgeable Midoriya.” Yaomomo said, impressed. “You were only 7 and you know it so well.”

He blushed again. “Well, yeah. He’s All Might.”

“Hold on. This is the best part!” Ashido said, sitting down on his opposite side to Uraraka.

The All Might on video started singing into the microphone. It was apparent they were at a karaoke night of some form, having some down time. The singing wasn’t exactly in tune or anything, but he seemed to be enjoying himself.

“It’s fun seeing heroes act like this, right?”

Midoriya nodded. “Yeah. It makes people feel like being a hero is not unattainable and brings them closer to the public. It’s a big part of heroics as well, like interviews.”

“What do you think of his singing?”

“Well, I don’t know much about it. You must know more, Jirou.” He said, smiling at her.

“Have you ever tried to imitate it?”

“What?” He asked, suddenly flustered again.

“Well, you look up to him so much. Don’t we all try to act like our heroes sometimes?

He almost buried his face in his hands. Of course he imitated All Might. He was always so amazing! How could he not? But he never knew what to say when this was pointed out to him.

“I never imitated his singing, though.”

“Well, why don’t you try?”

“What!?” He yelled a little louder than he planned. “Wh–what do you mean?”

She smiled at him excitedly and the other girls were just watching. Uraraka and Momo felt a little bad for him, they couldn’t even guess what Toru was thinking, and Jirou and Asui were just a little curious but mostly unbothered, although Jirou felt a little bad for being responsible for this.

“I just want to see how it compares to him, since you look up to him so much.”

“Well, I-I don’t really sing.”

“Go on. Just a little bit for us!”

He was clearly getting overwhelmed, and Jirou was in half a mind to pull Mina away. If he really was so desperate not to sing, then he probably wouldn’t be the right person they are looking for. But she was kind of interested.

“Okay, I suppose. I don’t think I’m going to be good though.”

“It’s alright, Midoriya.” Hagakure spoke for the first time.

He blushed even more until he was no longer a natural colour and avoided each of their eyes. He swallowed and then quietly starting humming the tune of the song in the video, before starting on the words.

The girls listened intently as he sweetly sung through the lyrics.

Jirou listened and it was instantly obvious he wasn’t the same person from that night. His voice was really endearing and sweet, and it would be really well suited for lullabies, but it definitely wasn’t the same. His voice was not only higher, but also a lot more mellow. He wasn’t a bad singer per say, but it just wouldn’t stand out in a crowd or anything.

“Was-was that okay?” He asked once finished, voice a lot higher than usual.

“Yeah, that was great!” Mina said as Hagakure clapped for him.

Uraraka, taking sympathy at the embarrassed teenager, turned to him. “Deku, you can go now if you want. I think I understand this now. Thank you!”

He smiled at her and then said goodbye to the others, leaving to go to his dorm room.

Once he was gone, everyone turned to Jirou. She just shook her head, and they sighed.

“But he was so nice.”

“Yeah, but it just wasn’t the same.”

Mina inhaled and exhaled. “Alright then. So let’s get onto the next person.” She took out a piece of paper from her pocket and grabbed a pencil from the table, crossing out Midoriya’s name on it.

“You made an actual list?”

“Yep!”

“You realise we have homework we have to do. We can’t spend our entire weekend on this.”

“This is important.”

“Is it?”

“Please. This is going to be fun! I want to know who I can karaoke with!”

They looked at each other. In fairness, all of them were curious, though none of them knew why it interested them so much. But it was going to be a fun waste of time if anything, so sure. They could get on board with it.

Kirishima was a lot easier to get to sing. He was loud and boisterous anyway, they just needed to set him a challenge of some sort, and Jirou found it easy to just say no. However, they found that his voice was strangely gentle for him, which was also interesting. Ojiro they simply wrote off after some thought, considering he was a lot more quiet than others and realising they would not be able to get him to sing at all.

That was their Friday, and half their Saturday. They were all practically exhausted by the end of their last school day and just wanted to get some sleep. Kyoka almost wasn’t even bothered by the background noises she heard during the night. She was just too tired to care and practically fell asleep as soon as she lay down. The annoying thing was, she would have let it go in other circumstances, but she was basically dragged into being a detective and it just lit a fire under her curiosity. Seriously, there was no reason for her to care so much, but she couldn’t help thinking, who had sung?

Well, they had the weekend. If they couldn’t figure it out in that time, then she’d just leave it alone.

“Jirou!”

She almost rolled her eyes when Mina skipped up to her. She wondered why she was so into this mystery and how she was letting herself get dragged into it. But she was her friend so she just turned to her instead.

“What is it?”

She grabbed her arm and pulled her away before she could protest. “Come on, let’s go find Sero!”

She didn’t even bother to argue, letting herself get pulled halfway across the common room before she let go and they walked up the stairs.

Sero was in his room, lounging on his hammock, when he heard a knock at his door. He turned his head, and got up, opening the door to find the 2 staring at him. His jaw slackened slightly, but he still kept smiling, though more out of surprise.

“What are you girls doing here?”

“Hey, Sero!” Mina said, walking into his room. “What you up to?”

“What? I’m just relaxing. It’s the weekend. Uh, yeah, so is everything okay with you 2?”

“Yep!”

He looked like a deer in headlights, a little bit confused as to what was going on. Jirou didn’t really bother to interrupt them, just retiring to watch the situation unfold.

“Well, I was about to go down to the baths, but if you want anything, I’m here to help.”

Jirou frowned and spoke up for the first time. “Wait. You’re going to bathe now?”

“Uh, yeah.” He said, clearly uncomfortable at 2 girls asking him about it.

Jirou checked her phone quickly. “It’s only 7:30.”

He shrugged, laughing awkwardly. “Well, I find long baths relaxing. I tend to be one of the first there usually.”

“Every night?”

“Well, I mean, most nights. Why?”

Jirou sighed but shook her head. “Nothing. Go on, we’ll leave you alone.”

He smiled at them and picked up his towel. The girls left the room and Sero, with another wide grin, locked his door and waved goodbye to them and headed downstairs. Mina grasped Jirou’s arm almost a little too tight and she briefly flinched away.

“Why did you tell him to go?”

“If he goes to bathe so early, he wouldn’t have been one of the last to go that night so it wasn’t him.”

“Oh.” Ashido said, sounding lightly disappointed. “I still wanted to hear him sing though. Well, now that Sero’s mentioned it, I’m feeling ready for a bath! I’d usually wait till later, but...I think I’ll go now!”

She hopped off to her room to get her stuff, leaving Jirou standing by herself in the corridor, wondering where the hell her weekend went since everything was being taken up by this stupid mystery quest. She headed back to her room for a few minutes, but couldn’t focus on anything. After a short while, she slumped her shoulders and, realising she hadn’t eaten in some time, went downstairs to get something.

Absently, she started humming something to herself as she decided against the stairs and took the elevator. But as soon as she exited, she stopped.

Once again, there was the voice, a lot more clearer this time. They were singing a pop song, different to the earlier one, but they adapted well to it and, before she could think, her curiosity overpowered her sense of spying on people being wrong and she used her earphone jacks to find that the person was where she was actually heading. Namely, the kitchen. She was careful to not make much sound incase they thought no one was downstairs, and snuck around to the kitchen wall, before leaning her head to peer around the corner.

She needn’t have worried about being overly quiet, as the boy was wearing headphones. Somehow, this was her first thought, quickly followed by her stopping herself from exclaiming her surprise aloud.

Kaminari was in the kitchen making himself some kind of snack. She didn’t care in the slightest what it was, but she was mesmerised by his voice. Sure, he was on their list of potential singers due to the pitch and everything, but she would have never guessed that he was so...actually talented in it. He talked a lot, but he had never given the indication that he had practiced singing. And yet, he was way above what she had heard from any of their other classmates.

She stared and listened, transfixed by the somewhat overly loud singing. She almost forgot what the situation actually was and that she was trying to avoid being caught. Once she remembered, she gasped lightly, twisting around on the spot to run away.

Only to trip over her own feet and the carpet.

The singing stopped, and she cursed herself as she got up and sprinted up the stairs, catching Kaminari’s voice asking if anyone was there. But by that point, she had already turned a corner and was running breathlessly up to her room.

Kaminari heard something falling over outside of the kitchen, even through his headphones. He furrowed his eyebrows and took them off, a little concerned over whether someone was hurt.

“Is anyone there?” He asked loudly.

When he received no answer, he turned around, dropping the butter knife he had been holding, and walked out of the kitchen, glancing around to try and see if he could tell what had happened, but nothing stood out.

“Hagakure?” He called, thinking it could have been her since naturally he wouldn’t see her.

He looked around again, a little confused and just slightly scared of the idea of a ghost, before assuming it was just his imagination (or something was wrong with his headphones, but he didn’t like that thought) and heading back in to finish his food.

Jirou knew she shouldn’t be so surprised. But it was Kaminari. He was basically just messing around all the time, and was nowhere near the most competent person in...well anything. Other than embarrassing himself.

Okay, to be fair, she knew that wasn’t strictly true. He was very good when it came to socialising (something Jirou occasionally lacked tact in, not that he never did too) and he was strong, even if he couldn’t really control his power properly. But to Jirou, he was just the friend she could joke about and make fun of. If he was so good at something she actually cared about...well, it would upset their whole dynamic.

She entered the bathroom, at around 8, by which point most of the girls were already there. The only ones missing were Tsuyu and Hagakure.

She got silently into the water, starting on washing herself, before she groaned, knowing she kind of had to say it.

“It was Kaminari.”

“What?” Momo asked, turning her attention to her.

“He was singing in the kitchen a few minutes ago. It was his voice I heard.”

She heard a squeal from outside the tub, and almost jumped out of the water.

“Toru!” Ochako called out, clearly scared as well. “You were in here?”

“I came in about a minute ago, but Jirou was looking a little conflicted, so I didn’t want to get in yet.” She said, jumping in beside Momo and splashing some water on the others. “So, it was Kaminari? He can sing?”

“That’s so unfair!” Mina pouted. “He’s my friend and I’ve never heard him. Why has he never sung in front of me?”

“Maybe he was embarrassed?”

“Kaminari? Embarrassed?” Jirou dismissed. “He has no idea what the word even means. He probably just doesn’t think there’s any reason for him to.”

“I want to hear him now!”

“Me too.”

“If you say he’s a good singer when you know so much about music, I suppose it would be entertaining.”

“Maybe we can ask him tomorrow.”

“No.” Jirou stated firmly and the others turned back to her.

“Why?”

“Because if we just went up to him and asked him, we’d have to explain why we were doing so and that I heard him before.”

“And?”

“Our relationship works best if I don’t have to tell him he’s good at anything.”

“That’s..a little mean spirited.”

“The point is, we can’t just ask him.”

Mina suddenly started slapping the side of the bath and sitting up taller. “I got it!” She exclaimed. “Karaoke night!”

Jirou actually did really like the idea of a karaoke night. Of course she did, it was more her comfort zone than a lot of other things with her class. But it was kind of a complicated set up for such a thing.

“Why didn’t we just try that to begin with?” Ochako asked fairly.

“It’s not as fun as trying to figure out who it was. But now we know, we can listen to all our classmates sing! It will be fun!”

As over excited as Mina was about it, Jirou did really want to do it. Although she wasn’t quite sure if she would sing. She did it in her spare time, not in front of others. It just...wasn’t what she usually did. But hearing the others could possibly be quite entertaining, she supposed.

“I have the equipment in my room.” She said dryly. “We can set it up tomorrow.”

“Yay! I’ll tell Tsu!”

Sunday always consisted of them all scattered around the living room, either catching up on homework or just talking. Considering they only had 2 days of weekend, they used their last day to just hang out.

Jirou was sitting with Momo, waiting for Mina to undoubtedly announce to the rest of the class their plans for the evening, but her gaze kept drifting to Kaminari. At that moment specifically, he seemed to be studying his plate of pancakes and Jirou couldn’t help thinking he looked more focused than he ever did in class. When Momo got up to get herself a drink, she decided to just go over to him.

“What are you looking at, dummy?”

Without even looking up, he picked up a piece of fruit which was on his plate and held it up for her to see. “This blueberry is so big.”

She snorted before managing to catch herself and this time, actually rolling her eyes. How he still managed to catch her off guard was unknown to her.

“You’re an idiot.”

“What did I do this time?” He said, affronted.

She simply sighed and before she could say anything else, Mina had stood on the coffee table (something Iida most certainly did NOT approve of) and Jirou noticed she had somehow sneakily already set up the microphone.

“Okay everyone! We’re going to do a karaoke tonight!”

The noise instantly picked up, with some people wondering what was happening, others excitedly yelling, some just a little awkwardly sitting around, and Bakugo...well, being Bakugo.

“What stupid crap is this?”

“Aw, come on Bakugo. It will be fun!” Kirishima said to him with a toothy laugh.

“No it won’t. I don’t want to spend my time doing stupid stuff like this.”

“You scared someone will outshine you in something?” Kaminari leant over teasingly.

“Screw you, sparky.”

“Well, no one else is objecting. You sure you aren’t worried?”

“Shut up you loser. I’ll prove you wrong. Hand me that stupid microphone, black eyes.”

Kaminari leant back triumphantly and Jirou barely had time to process what had happened before it was over. Wow. This was a lot easier than she expected.

After everyone had calmed down laughing after Bakugo sang (well, yelled) and Kirishima managed to get him to relax while he was threatening to blow everyone up and surprisingly got him to stay, things went relatively smoothly. Next, Mina went up and naturally picked a very upbeat hip hop song, then Aoyama with something in a language they didn’t even understand, and Uraraka decided to try it out a little too, though with something a lot mellower which worked perfectly for her as her voice was so fitting for such songs. It was really quite adorable.

It was after her turn that Kaminari turned his head to face Jirou. “Aren’t you singing?”

She glanced at him out of the corners of her eyes. “Nah.”

“Why?”

“I just don’t know if I’m up for it.”

“You play instruments and you like music. I’m sure your singing is awesome!”

She blushed slightly, like when anyone complimented her abilities, and turned to him. “Well, let’s see you sing and maybe I’ll consider it.”

He grinned and got up from the couch to fetch the mic from Ochako, leaving her a bit in shock. She didn’t even say that to get him to sing. She just wanted to tease him over telling her to do so when he hadn’t either. She had forgotten the original purpose of this activity all together, but now that he was setting up, she suddenly felt herself paying much more attention. She glanced around at the girls, all of whom were waiting impatiently for him to start. The boys seemed mostly neutral if a bit curious, which led her to believe they hadn’t exactly heard him either.

Her eyes found his briefly as he looked around at them all, before smirking and pressing play on the song.

It only took 4 bars for him to start singing, and instantly, the atmosphere in the room changed.

Half the boys were staring with slack jaws and the girls were all looking at him with wide eyes as he effortlessly glided through the song. Jirou was listening so intently. His voice just had something special in it. It wasn’t that it was fantastic or technically good, there was just something so unique about it that she wondered why she had trouble figuring out who was singing in the first place.

He seemed confident and fun and even Bakugo seemed impressed (well, he seemed grumpy, but it was clear it was due to Kaminari being better than him at something. Though, in fairness, in this situation that wasn’t hard).

The class eventually cheered him on, laughing good naturedly and clapping along. The song was over before Jirou even realised.

“Woo!” Mina screamed once the song was done with.

“I didn’t know you could sing, bro.”

The talking picked up again in the same moment, and Jirou could hear Kaminari laughing lightly. That was before she heard her name from him.

“So, you singing now?”

She was, for once, flustered. She had completely forgot about why he got up to sing in the first place and she suddenly felt strangely self conscious with all eyes on her.

“I...I really don’t think-“

“Come on. I’ll sing with you!”

If she wasn’t wide eyed and blushing before, she was then. Denki was smiling at her with such intensity, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to run towards or away from it. Before long though, she gulped, and got up, joining him by his side. When she looked to his face, she could see he was still very much grinning at her, and somehow, it made her feel even more vulnerable than before. Her singing was a way for her to express herself, much like her instruments. Doing it in front of people, and with someone else for that matter, was a big deal for her. But the reassuring smiles she gathered from around the room helped her stand her ground.

“I know a song!” Kaminari said, and she didn’t even bother to check what it was.

That is, until it started playing and she instantly recognised it. It was the same tune she had been playing a few nights ago, though admittedly with more instruments.

“I heard you playing this in your room. It was really cool! I thought you’d like to sing it.”

She stared at him for a few moments, before remembering what they were supposed to be doing, and leaning in closer to the microphone. She waited nervously for the lyrics to kick in and once they did, their 2 voices melded together. She always was told she had a nice singing voice. It was strong and melodic and had a natural high pitch to it. But she had never sung with anyone else like this, and his deeper tone kind of matched her higher one.

She kept moving her eyes to look at him throughout it. This was not how she had expected her day to go at all, or her weekend. She would never have expected to be singing next to Kaminari in general, at all. But it was almost relaxing, and the beat of the music helped calm her heart. It was...nice. And she barely even minded everyone listening and clapping. Maybe she could compliment him just once after it was over.

Which, in fairness, was not long after. They really needed to stop annoying the class B dorm students.

Hope you enjoyed it! I'm so inexperienced with writing none angst it's frustrating
