Summary
In August of 2038, Connor faces a dilemma: either he go to therapy to work through his selective mutism, or he stands to lose his job as ASL teacher at Amanda Stern's Jericho Center of Education. She means well, although Connor himself doesn't see why he should go to therapy. He doesn't have any unresolved issues he needs to work through, he's just...not seen the need for using his voicebox since he was a child. He still doesn't, but pragmatically speaking, he cares more about keeping the one job he loves than the potential hazards of having to talk through things with a perfect stranger.
A few months down the line, it's at that same treatment center that he meets Hank Anderson, recovering alcoholic, and that chance encounter sets things in motion. Things that no one could have foreseen.
There are forces at work in the shadows, and before the year is over, Connor will find himself right at the center of it - with dire consequences.
