Work Text:
Jimin likes coffee. That's a simple fact that every single one of his friends knows well. Coffee is the cure-all that everyone always needs to function and Jimin is no different.
Bad day? Coffee.
Lost your essay? Coffee.
About to commit murder due to sleep deprivation? Coffee.
In Jimin's (obviously correct) opinion, there's absolutely nothing in this world that a good cup of coffee won't fix. His go-to in the mornings is a caramel macchiato, unless he got less than 5 hours of sleep, in that case, he always chooses a latte with a double shot of espresso and whipped cream piled on top.
The small coffee shop down the road had been his saving grace during his first year of university and was probably the only reason he had survived this long. He knows that the second he walks in that the barista will immediately know what his order is. Or at least, that's the way it had always been. Until today. Instead of being greeted by either the smiling faces of Hoseok or Taehyung, Jimin is facing a slightly scowling blond barista that he's never seen before.
The man, (Yoongi according to his nametag) must be new. He seems awfully pale and if you consider bags under his eyes, it looks as if the barista hasn't slept in years.
That's the first time in over a year that Jimin's order isn't ready the second he gets to the counter.
"What can I get for you?" Yoongi asks gruffly.
"Just a caramel macchiato will be fine, thanks," Jimin replies and easily pulls out the exact change required for the drink.
"That'll be-"
"Three dollars and fifty cents, I know." Jimin smiles easily as he passes over the coins with a small laugh. He manages to get a small quirk of the lips from the quiet barista and Jimin decides that it counts as a win in his books. When his drink is ready, he thanks Yoongi again and takes it with him to sit down at one of the many tables.
He stares at Yoongi as subtly as he can. He doesn't know what it is exactly, but something's different with Yoongi. He only looks away whenever the barista looks in his general direction but then returns to staring as soon as he can. Yoongi is quite attractive, that much is obvious, and Jimin isn't blind enough to miss that.
He didn't think too much of it at first, but now that Yoongi had replaced the others for a whole week, Jimin is beginning to get suspicious. He approaches the counter the next morning, bright and early enough that he's the only one in the shop, and is thrilled to see a caramel macchiato waiting for him already.
"So," Jimin asks as leans on the counter and takes a sip of the drink after paying for it, "what happened to Hoseok and Taehyung?"
"Shift change. Said something about classes being switched." Yoongi mumbled back.
"Ah. Fun."
Jimin looks at Yoongi carefully.
"You look like you haven't slept in ages," he remarks before taking another mouthful of his macchiato, "who the heck decided to give you the early shift?"
Yoongi shrugs and makes himself a coffee, dropping money from his wallet into the register. Jimin almost chokes when he sees Yoongi add a full five shots of espresso to the cup of regular coffee and then down it without hesitation
The barista licks his lips and looks down at the cup in disappointment.
"Damn. I didn't make it strong enough."
Jimin actually chokes that time.
"How much caffeine do you need?" Jimin asks in horror as he watches Yoongi make yet another cup of coffee and add seven shots of espresso this time.
Yoongi stirs it in the cup with a shrug.
"It depends," he says as he pays for this coffee, "some days I need more than others."
"I'll say," Jimin grimaces at the drink that Yoongi is trying to pass off as coffee.
And that's how they first started becoming friends, just talking in an empty coffee shop at 5 am. Jimin returns every day at the same ungodly time just to tease Yoongi for his coffee preference and to get something to wake him up before class.
Or at least, that's what it was at first.
As the weeks pass and the number of espresso shots Yoongi was putting into his cup increases, Jimin finds that he's looking forward to seeing Yoongi more than the coffee. There's a strange fluttering in his stomach and he's too scared to act on the feelings that are becoming more obvious to him.
Hey, I kinda like you is what he wants to say.
"Hey, why do you drink so much coffee?" Is what he does say.
Yoongi stares at him for a moment. Jimin expects him to shrug or just say that he likes it or something. What Yoongi says instead is the last thing Jimin expects.
"I'm secretly a vegan vampire and I'm living entirely off of caffeine." He says blankly and Jimin almost drops his cup as he starts laughing.
"Oh man," he wheezes, "I didn't expect you of all people to have a sense of humour."
He stops laughing when he notices that Yoongi isn't laughing with him.
"It is a joke, right?"
Yoongi looks at Jimin blankly and opens his mouth enough that Jimin can see overly sharp canines.
"Oh god, you weren't kidding," Jimin gasps and takes a step back as Yoongi takes another huge gulp of his coffee.
"Why would I lie?" Yoongi asks as he throws his empty cup in the garbage.
"B-but vampires don't exist-"
"Good to know that I am nonexistent in your eyes."
Yoongi opens his mouth to yawn and Jimin instinctively flinches back when his teeth become much more visible and prominent. Yoongi pauses and stares at him with a raised brow.
"Jimin, chill, I'm not gonna bite you."
"How can I be sure?" He asks skeptically.
"Why else would I be drinking this disgusting sludge?" Yoongi gestures to the cup in the garbage "I need to get energy somehow and this was the only thing I could think of"
"So you won't hurt me?"
"Oh for fuck's sake" Yoongi rolled his eyes and walked out from behind the counter and straight up to Jimin. He stares Jimin in the eye for a moment before smirking.
"Why? Are you afraid..." He trails off and then vanishes only to reappear behind Jimin, breath warm on his neck, "that I'll bite?"
Jimin shrieks and jumps away quickly with wide eyes.
Yoongi stands there laughing at his reaction.
"Don't worry, I wouldn't do that. Not unless you asked me to, of course."
Jimin blinks and tries to awkwardly laugh along with him.
"I’m kidding, is it really that hard to tell? I literally just told you that I’m a vegan - I’d sooner suck a mango dry than you,” He says flatly and Jimin sighs.
“I don’t know if I should be grateful that you won’t kill me, or offended that a mango is better than me.”
“And what about you?" Yoongi asks after practically shooing Jimin's offended comment away with a wave of his hand. Jimin only looks back in confusion, brow furrowing and eyes narrowing as he tilts his head slightly to the side.
"What do you mean?"
"Your glamour isn't all that convincing, you know," Yoongi gestures at him and Jimin is more confused than before.
"Glamour? What-"
"Come on Jimin, did you honestly think I wouldn't notice?" Yoongi smirks and Jimin really wishes that he would just explain everything already.
"Jimin, you fae are all the same," he shakes his head in amusement, "way too pretty to be human."
Jimin drops his cup, what remains of his macchiato spilling on the floor.
"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."
Yoongi freezes.
"Wait. What?"
Yoongi's face turns paler than before.
"So you're telling me," he speaks slowly, "that there is actually a human who is as pretty as the fae?"
"I'm sorry, you've completely lost me," Jimin admits but isn't sure what to do when Yoongi starts laughing again.
"Oh man, just wait until Seokjin hears that!" Yoongi laughed.
All of a sudden something seems to hit him.
"Wait a second. You aren't one of us. And I just revealed our existence to you." His eyes widen comically, "oh fuck."
"Oh I'm sure I can keep it a secret," Jimin says.
His eyes have a teasing glint in them as he leans forward and taps a finger on Yoongi's nose.
"The price for my silence is one date."
Yoongi smiles with a chuckle.
"That sounds doable."
"You can't be a cop out and take me to a coffee shop, though," Jimin tells him.
"Alright, fine," Yoongi relents and Jimin looks pointedly at him.
Only a few seconds later, Jimin slips him a string of numbers written on a napkin.
"Well then, I guess I'll see you later?" Jimin asks as he starts walking toward the door.
"Yeah. Tomorrow," Yoongi answers.
Jimin is halfway to the door when Yoongi calls out again.
"Have a good class! Text me if you get bored!"
"Can't!" Jimin calls back, "Don't have your number!"
Yoongi picks up a random cup and points to the bottom with a smirk.
Sure enough, Jimin looks and it's there.
"I'm not too good at all this flirting thing," Yoongi mentions with the largest smile, "but I hope it's working."
"Oh believe me," Jimin smiled back, "it definitely is."
