Because after all these years of suffering and hardship to endure the presence of the most incompetent manservant alive, on the top of it all, Arthur was also forced into the acceptance of the fact that it’d take (a mind you) highly treacherous, and entirely not (yet) legitimate miracle to get Merlin anywhere near resembling deference.
