Chapter Text
You have been wanting a pet for a while now. And today, your roommate has finally agreed to letting you have one in your dorm! You start to think that it may have been because she noticed that you have been down lately and she wanted to cheer you up. But you have a feeling it's also because she's been wanting a cat or dog in the dorm for a while now. Or maybe she's realized that you have been sneaking out the past few months just to go to the local animal shelter and volunteer.
Whatever her reason might be, your roommate and bestfriend, Marian, decided to tag along with you on your way to the local pet store.
"Thanks for coming with me, Marian." You smiled widely as you opened the doors to get in the store.
"I'm only coming with you just to make sure you won't bring home seven puppies."
"What's wrong with seven puppies?"
"Well, for one, the rent pay might raise next month due to products becoming more expensive because of that new law implemented, and two, I think there's a limit to how many pets you can bring into the dorm, and if I recall correctly, you can only have two."
"So can we have t—"
"No." You pouted at her and she just rolled her eyes. From the back of the store, a woman, probably in her 30s, emerged. She had her hair tied into a bun and when she saw the both of you, she smiled widely.
"Welcome, pretty ladies! My name is Solji. What's your names?" She walked until she was in front of you, still wearing her smile.
"My name is Y/N and this is Marian."
"Oh! Nice names. So what brings you here today?" Solji asked, very cheerfully. It's early in the morning but she has lots of energy.
"I wanted a new companion!"
"Oh? What would you like? Puppies? Kittens?"
"I honestly don't know, what do you think would fit me? I'm still in college, I live in a dorm, I don't have much money but I have a part-time job and my savings, and I can make time for my new friend just fine! And my friend will help me in taking care of it, too!"
"I-I will?" Marian interjected, and you gave her a wide smile, coaxing her into agreeing. She sighed and nodded her head anyways.
"You girls are so adorable! Anyways, I can see both of you are responsible and kind, so I bet you'll do a great job! Is this your first time taking care of an animal friend?"
"Nope! I've had experiences before, mostly dogs and hamsters. I've had a rabbit once."
"Ah, I see. How long has it been since your last?"
"Five years?"
"Oh! Then I'll suggest a few animal friends that's easy to care for so you can take your time getting used to it."
"Thanks! I appreciate it." Solji led the both of you to one of the animals in display. The variety of animals here is amazing. It's a large space too, so nobody has to feel cramped when looking around. The animals seemed to be taken care of well. Solji seems to care for them a lot, too.
"Well, we have here Syrian hamsters. You'll just need a large cage for them and talk to them daily. Animals may not understand words, but they feel them! You shouldn't put two Syrians together for they might fight. So this should be an easy one! You only take care of one, and they like being cared by their owners! Though you should be kind in handling them for they are feisty." The hamsters were all sleeping, since they're nocturnal creatures and it's only 10 in the morning.
"I actually have experiences with them!" You told her and Solji seemed surprised, but in a good way. You almost think in an excited way.
"Really? What was their name?"
"Tooru! She's the loveliest little baby I ever had."
"Aww, Tooru is such a cute name!"
Solji lead you to a huge aquarium next. It was filled with plants, houses and those other displays they usually have. It even has lighting! Lots of colorful fishes swam around.
"Of course, fishes are naturally an easy pet to care for. They're also pleasing to look at! Some people relax just by looking at an aquarium filled with these babies. Also, the expenses that come with these pets are cheap too! So if you want to go the safe route, I'd suggest these little angels." Rosie smiled and fed the fishes. She seemed like somebody who really enjoys her job.
"Naturally, after fishes I'd suggest turtles. I'd say the same about turtles, except they need to be in a shallow-watered aquarium and they must be fed in a different container. Basking sites in an aquarium is a must, too. Turtles like basking in the sun's rays." Solji stopped for a while and looked at you.
"Have any if these lovely creatures caught your interest yet?" Solji asked you, and you notice Marian looking at the aquarium filled with kaleidoscopic fishes.
"I honestly love them all already, but if you have more to show me, I'm all ears!"
"Oh, let's look at the back then!"
"There's more animals there?!" You squealed enthusiastically, Solji chuckled at your display of excitement and nodded.
"Marian, want to come with me in the back?" She nodded and quickly followed.
"Let's go then!" Solji opened the back door. You both went in and there were more animals! Puppies, kittens, rabbits and more! This is what she was taking care of before you both came in. There was another girl inside feeding the rabbits.
"Hey, Junghwa. Could you watch the front desk for me for a while?"
The girl, or Junghwa, as Solji had called her, nodded and smiled. She quickly exits the room.
Solji introduced you to each and every one of the adorable animal friends and even let out one of the kittens named Emi. It clung to Marian, and honestly you don't think either one of them is letting go soon. When you both finally made it to the last animal friend, Solji looked at you and asked again, "So have you decided which one you're going to get, sweetheart?"
You both sat down. "I honestly don't know yet! They're all so precious! Can't I just bring them all home?"
Solji laughed. "I don't think your friend would like that."
You sighed and decided to give it a moment to think it over.
"You know, I haven't showed you all of them yet."
There's more?
"You see, there's this new ones that came in but we aren't sure if we could just give them away since not many people know how to care for them. They are known to be able to sense and understand feelings, so they are a special case. But I've actually seen you volunteer a few times at the animal shelter right across the street and I can sense you are a naturally nice person."
You blushed. You didn't know Solji noticed you.
"I feel like you'll do a good job caring for them. Well, him. At this moment, the little angel is only a singular."
"What is it? A chinchilla? A sugar glider?" You've thought of numerous animals that people kept as pets that they didn't have in this store, but she shook her head at every single one of them. She piqued your curiosity.
"What is it then?" You saw a flash of emotion in her eyes, as if she's still deciding if she's going to tell you or not. She stood up and lead you to a another door. Wow, this place is huge.
"Solji? Where are you taking me?" You looked over at Marian who was still busy with Emi then back at Solji.
"You wanted to meet this new angel, right?"
"Right, but why is there a separate room? Is it an illegal pet? If that's the case I don't want it."
She chuckled. "No, not that. Just a rare one. Do you know about fairies?"
Fairies. There's a fairy in this place?! Fairies were believed to be a myth a long time ago until one day, somebody discovered them and people became friends with them. Since then, fairies were in the norm now. But despite that, fairies were very rare creatures and they only showed themselves to people they are fond of. They are known to be able to sense and understand human emotions which makes them good companions.
"You see, there's this angel who was adopted a long time ago, until one day the owner left and never came back. We found the little angel flying around looking for his owner, and we decided to take him in because he looked so thin and unhealthy. He hasn't warmed up to us yet, and I feel like he'll have a hard time getting close to anybody ever again, but I feel like you can do it."
Wow. Some people can be so cruel sometimes. You thought it over, "But why me, Solji?"
"I just feel it. You're a good person. And I am never wrong about these kinds of stuff. It's a talent, really." You both chuckled for a bit. Marian was still playing with Emi. Wow, she really likes cats, huh.
"Alright, let us meet this fairy friend! What's his name?"
"Hoseok."
And with that, she opened the door to the other room. It looked like a normal room, except there seems to be a small house in the middle, complete with a water dispenser and food bowl. That seems to be where Hoseok is.
"Hey Hoseok. Somebody is here to see you." Solji called out. For a while, nothing happened. You were almost convinced she was fooling around. Until you hear the flapping of wings.
"Who's there?" A small human-like being with translucent wings came out of the small house. He flew over to where me and Solji is, and you just realized that he has a sunflower on his head that looks like an antennae. Solji held out her hand and he stood on it. So this is what a fairy looks like.
"H-hi there." For some reason, you felt shy around him. He looked at me, examining me up and down. After a whole minute, he looked away from me.
"Who's she?" He looked back at Solji for answers. You just realized he has the cutest voice. It didn't sound girly, he somehow still sounds like a boy, but in a cute way. A cute boy.
"This here is Y/N. She's a really good person and I'd feel like she'll take good care of you."
"So you're gonna give me away again?"
"Yes but—"
"How many times have you made people adopt me and then bring me back a few days later? Haven't you learned? She's going to be one of them. She's just going to return me in a few days' time when she realizes I'm not worth the time, trouble and space. I'd give it two days."
"Hoseok, you don't understand—"
"Oh, but I DO understand. You keep trying to give me away because you don't want me, is that it? Am I too much of a burden? It's because I eat too much, huh? Is that it?" Hoseok snarled and Solji honestly looked startled.
"Hi, Hoseok. My name is Y/N. I know we don't know each other yet, but I want you to give me a chance." You spoke out, and Hoseok looked at you weirdly.
"And why should I?" He crossed his arms and he pouted. You'd be lying if you said you didn't find that cute.
"Because, I really want to be friends with you! I won't let you down, I promise. And if you even ask my friend outside, she'll tell you I'm good at keeping promises!" You uttered out to him. Hoseok fascinated you, and to be honest you really want to be friends with him.
"I don't trust you." He stated.
"That's okay! You don't have to trust me. I have to be the one to earn your trust. But in order to do that, I want you to give me a chance. I swear, I won't let you down. Just one chance." You told him, feeling brave. You want to know more about him. You have a feeling he'll be someone special to you.
Hoseok looked away for a while and he looked as if he's contemplating whether he'll take you up on your request or not. Solji gestured for you to go out for a while, and you complied. You went outside and closed the door behind you. When you went outside, Marian was on floor with a sleeping Emi.
"Wow, you both look so cute. I'll take a pic of you two." You whipped out your phone and Marian gave you a tired smile.
"So have you decided yet?"
"I have, but my new companion hasn't."
"Huh? What?"
"I'll show you later. I don't wanna jinx it."
Marian just shrugged and didn't think of it as weird. Marian closed her eyes for a bit and you played on your phone. After five minutes, Solji went out, with a tired Hoseok in a container that's for hamsters. Solji gestured for you to come closer to her.
"Hey Solji! How is it?"
"All those arguments made him tired so he must fall asleep . But all in all he agreed!"
"Great! How much?"
"Nah, not this time, Hoseok is a special case. I just really wanted to give him a home. If you are able to do that, you have made me a billionaire already."
"Thanks! Solji. What about his diet though?"
"He eats human food. But his favorite is kimchi, hamburger and meat."
"Okay thanks!"
"Also if you don't want him to be hyper, don't give him Sprite."
"O-okay." Sprite makes him hyper? Haha, what a cutie. Solji gave you Hoseok, and then she picked up Emi from Marian. Marian's eyes immediately flew open.
"O-oh? You've decided already?" Marian asked, tiredly rubbing her eyes.
"Yes, Marian meet Hoseok!" You showed her the tiny container with the little angel inside.
Marian narrowed her eyes at you as if she couldn't believe it. She looked closely at Hoseok then back at you.
"I-is that a f-fairy?"
"Yes!"
Solji returned Emi back to her cage and smiled at the both of you before saying, "Hello, I'll just be in front desk. I've left it unattended for quite sometime now. Before you leave, let's do the paperwork for adopting Hoseok, okay?" You nodded and she left.
"How did you get one of these? They are freaking rare!"
"I know, I know. But this little angel needs a home and I was hoping we could give him that!"
"Of course we will! You just have to be sure you're ready for this. It's almost like taking care of a baby."
"Yes! I'll be ready for anything as long as it's with you, Marian."
"Woah, slow your roll. Propose to me at first at least." You both laughed at your playful banter and proceed to signing the paper for this little angel.
"Good bye, you three! Give me a call incase you need my help, okay? I put my number inside the paper bag!" Solji gave you the paper bag, which was filled with clothes and toys for Hoseok. You nodded at her.
"Take care of Hoseok, okay?"
"We will!"
And the three of you walked home with a new member to the family.
