Chapter Text
Toshinori had finally done it! After two months he'd wrangled his way into class A. Nana and Torino had helped a lot in this process and Toshinori couldn't thank them enough. With the quirk registration being so awkward it had taken so much convincing for Toshinori to even get to try the exams. Toshinori personally thought all of it was a big waste of time.
"Alright... I feel like you might want to keep away from Aizawa, Kayama, Yamada and Iida. They are a bit much. Maybe stay away from Todoroki as well." Nana told Toshinori as she walked him through UA.
"Todoroki is in my class?! Oh god, I'm so dead! He thinks I'm quirkless and weak and-"
"Calm down, bunny. Stick to Aizawa and those ones then. They'll protect you." Nana teased, the nickname making Toshinori blush.
Nana and Toshinori got to the classroom and slid open the door. As Nana stepped in she seemed to change into a completely different person. This made the already nervous Toshinori even more terrified and therefore stay outside the door of the classroom.
"Where is Aizawa Shouta?" Nana demanded. The class didn't even seem to react. Sure some rolled their eyes but apart from that not much.
"Bathroom." A girl sighed. "Again."
"Can I go get him this time? Please, Sensei!" A blue-haired boy asked excitedly, making Nana laugh fondly before telling him he could.
The boy quickly got up and started to leave but stopped when he saw Toshinori standing there nervously.
"Oooh! Are you the new kid that was supposed to start in April at the same time as everyone else but didn't because your quirk was really late? You are! Sensei! New kid!" The boy exclaimed happily.
"Oh my god." Nana sighed. "To- Yagi. Come in. Don't be scared!" She smiled, the stern, obvious act, gone completely.
The boy zoomed off - not even an exaggeration he had engines in his elbows - to go and find the Aizawa kid. Toshinori, not really being given a choice, stepped into the classroom, as shy as ever. Even though he felt as though Todoroki's glare was digging into his soul he did his best to ignore him. Toshinori thought he'd be at least a little less terrified of Todoroki but nope. Still as scary as ever.
"Sorry for being late Sensei." A tired voice droned as the blue-haired boy from mere minutes ago came back into the class with him. He had black hair that was definitely more reminiscent of a girl's hair than a boy's. His skin was pale and he just seemed like he hadn't gone outside in about a month and not slept for the same amount of time. Although hard to tell because they were half-closed, Toshinori saw he had dull blue eyes. Much duller than his own. This kid seemed to be even more terrifying than Todoroki if that was even possible. Despite him being noticeably shorter than Toshinori he seemed to have the same looming nature as Todoroki.
"It's fine, but you gotta stop falling asleep in the bathrooms, Aizawa," Nana told him, causing Toshinori to choke on his own spit.
"Who're you? Or can I call you a walking stick?" Aizawa was using a mixture of sarcasm and joking that gave Toshinori a bit of a brat vibe from Aizawa.
"Y-Yagi Toshinori. You're Aizawa, right?" Toshinori smiled down at Aizawa who just stared tiredly back.
"No, I'm Yamada Hizashi, the loudest guy in existence." Aizawa rolled his eyes, his comment getting an offended 'hey' from a blonde who Toshinori assumed was Yamada. "Yes. I'm Aizawa Shouta but you can call me whatever you want. I don't really care."
"You boys go sit down. Yagi, there's a seat between Kayama and Aizawa. You go sit there." Nana said with her smile that, in Toshinori's opinion, could light up worlds if needed.
Toshinori, Aizawa and the other boy went and sat down, Aizawa nearly instantly starting to drift off to sleep. When Yamada poked him to keep him awake he turned and glared, resulting in Yamada having the same reaction to Todoroki glaring at Toshinori.
"Now then!" Nana exclaimed, stopping Aizawa from doing something to Yamada. "You'll be training in the morning to get Yagi used to it. Gran Torino will, as always, be teaching you."
As everyone got changed, Toshinori kept an eye on Aizawa, fearing he was going to do something. He wasn't getting changed for a while and Toshinori had a sense of dread as he undid his tie.
"C'mon 'zawa. You gotta get changed! Is it Yagi?" Yamada said. Yagi didn't mean to hear it but his name stood out to him.
Toshinori saw Aizawa shrug half-heartedly from the corner of his eye. Toshinori felt a pang of guilt, wondering what he could have done to make his classmate feel uncomfortable.
"Okay, okay… fine…"
Toshinori didn't mean to seem or be creepy but he found himself watching Aizawa get changed. Bandages were wrapped around his chest, forearms and lower legs, there were a few uncovered scars, some seemed like cuts, others seemed like burns. Bruises littered his entire body, some new and some had started to fade. It was like seeing Nana after a bad battle.
The bandages on his arms had a bit of blood on them and Toshinori started to think he got them put on that day.
Iida noticed the blood and gave Aizawa a look of disapproval. Aizawa only looked away from him and ended up making eye contact with Toshinori. Aizawa looked back to the wall he was facing as soon as he did.
"Stop staring. What? You never seen a couple of bandages?" Aizawa grumbled angrily as Toshinori looked away as well.
"S-sorry…"
The rest of the training morning went fine, though Toshinori had to force himself to not ask Aizawa questions about the scars, bruises and bandages. Eventually, Torino demanded that Toshinori fight Aizawa. Aizawa seemed to have beaten everyone he was put up against, including Todoroki.
"I'll take it easy on you since I just met you. Okay?" Toshinori called across the space they were given to fight in.
"Maybe I'll take it easy on you too Yagi." Aizawa smirked mischievously.
"Not to brag but-"
"GO!"
The last thing Toshinori saw before he was knocked out was Aizawa's white scarf he put on after his uniform.
Toshinori finally came around and woke up. The first thing he hears is someone's voice… lecturing someone…? He listens a bit closer and then figures out it's Yamada talking to Aizawa.
"You shouldn't have been scared!" Yamada exclaimed after Aizawa had said something Toshinori didn't quite catch.
"Yeah. Yagi is the sweetest kid I have ever met." Toshinori could hear Nana's smile as she spoke. "At first I thought you two would never get along but once he told me he and Todoroki didn't get along all that well-"
"I have to apologise now don't I?" Aizawa sighed. Toshinori wondered what he meant by that.
"Solely because Enji hates him?" Oh. Kayama was there too?
"Yes! Make friends with the guy Todoroki hates the most! It'll annoy him." Aizawa sighed almost half-heartedly.
"Todoroki only hates him because his quirk was late. Like really late." Nana laughed.
"Todoroki hates me because I'm sad. As if I care why he hates the kid." Aizawa stated, leaving no room for argument.
"You hate Todoroki don't you?" Yamada asked in such a way it almost sounded amused but spiteful.
"Yes. Yes, I do." Aizawa told him sternly in return.
"When Shouta hates you he will never let it go. No matter what you do. It's best to stay on his good side." Toshinori just knew Kayama had a smile and Aizawa was glaring at her. Just like siblings. Toshinori realised.
"Think I'll stay friends with him then." Yamada chucked, clearly a bit nervous. Or scared even.
"I think we should go check in on Yagi," Nana suggested, seeming to stop an arising argument of some kind. It would never be normal for Toshinori to hear Nana say his family name.
The others agreed and all four came into the room where Toshinori was. He smiled at them before Kayama came rushing over to his side and… Was she flirting with him?
"Hey, Yagi," Aizawa spoke up, tearing Toshinori's attention from Kayama. "I'm sorry for… winning." Yamada and Kayama gave a look of disappointment before laughing a bit.
"Aizawa," Nana said sounded like she was offended for Toshinori.
"Torino-Sensei congratulated me so I won. But… I am sorry." Aizawa replied, looking down at the ground.
"It's fine! But I'm curious now. What's your quirk?" Toshinori smiled, brushing off the apology. "Some sort of telekinesis right?"
"Well…"
"Actually! It's called Erasure. If he looks at you and activates his quirk he'll take your quirk away!" Yamada broke in, excited to explain his friends' quirk.
"The telekinesis part is connected to his hair. He, through hard training and a lot of pain, found out he could move around light objects if he's holding them. Not very useful if it's something like a ball but with a scarf it's an incredible ability." Kayama continued as Aizawa seemed to become a bit more embarrassed.
"When he uses his quirk his hair goes up and his eyes turn red. Unfortunately, using his quirk makes his eyes go dull." Nana finished, ruffling Aizawa's messy hair.
"That's awesome! What a cool quirk!" Toshinori awed. He reckoned Aizawa would be an idol when he grew up to be a hero.
"Yeah. Only bad thing is..." Yamada started.
"He's insistent on being an underground hero because of it." Kayama sighed as she finished for Yamada.
"It's not my fault…" Toshinori didn't catch the rest of what Aizawa said and it seemed no one else did either.
"What was that, babe?" Yamada asked with a smile. Aizawa really did mean he wouldn't care what people called him.
"It's not my fault I don't wanna be an attention-seeking bitch like some other people." Aizawa snapped, clearly aiming the last part at Yamada and Kayama.
"Aizawa." Nana warned, making Aizawa growl to himself and look at the floor.
Just then, Recovery Girl walked in, everyone looking over at her.
"Aizawa. Your mother is here." She said, pointing out the door. For some reason, Aizawa and Kayama seemed to stiffen up. It put Toshinori on edge and Nana seemed worried. With a small sigh, Aizawa left the room with Recovery Girl.
"I uh... Better go with him." Kayama decided before rushing after Aizawa and the nurse.
"I'mma go too..." Yamada then went after the both of his friends and left Toshinori with Nana who sat down beside Toshinori.
He looked at Nana worriedly. "What was...?" Toshinori started, not even needing to finish, Nana knowing what he wanted to know.
"I'm not really sure. All I know is that Aizawa's mother... She isn't the nicest woman in the world." Toshinori instantly thought
No. Of course, she's not. The nicest woman in the world is sat right next to me.
Nana sighed. "It does worry me. The fact Kayama feels the need to go with him. I'm pretty sure Yamada doesn't even know what's going on. Only Kayama and Aizawa do I think. Possibly Iida."
"What do you think is going on?" Toshinori asked, fidgeting with his sleeves.
"Anything could be. I know for a fact Aizawa isn't happy. Just in general. Even after only two months, Aizawa is regularly down with Recovery Girl. That's why he's always falling asleep. He's tired out from Recovery Girl's quirk. And when it's not that he just hasn't slept well." Nana explained, a familiar concerned tone tracing her voice.
Toshinori was, unsurprisingly worried about his classmate. Who wouldn't be after that.
"Anyway, we better get home hey Toshi?" Nana smiled, nudging his shoulder lightly and nodding her head to the door.
