They are the visual representation of someone else's impact on each other's lives and by the time they are formed the only thought someone should have as they see it is:
"Of course."
Of course this person is my soulmate.
Of course now is when our mark finally gets completed.
Of course this is the symbol that represents them to me.

Summary
The Hero Public Safety Commission implements a new publicity stunt meant to drum up some good PR. Heroes and civilians will get anonymously paired up as pen pals for a few months. Fans get to talk to heroes, and the HPSC gets to say their heroes are down-to-earth and involved with the people. It’s a win-win. All Might doesn’t need the publicity, but he feels like it’s a good opportunity nonetheless, so he enrolls in the event.
Problem is, All Might’s pen pal writes some pretty concerning stuff. He’s sure the kid is being bullied. And even worse… the ‘anonymous’ person on the other side begins to sound a lot like a certain successor of his. He’s going to get to the bottom of this. And if he finds out somebody’s hurt a single hair on his student’s head? Well… he’s the number one hero for a reason.
(AKA: the dadmight-centric Aldera Faces Consequences fic I’ve always wanted to write.)

Indeed, Professor Hershel Layton has encountered many inexplicable things in his life, seemingly magical and often mysterious things. Labyrinthia had been no different. A town shrouded in mystery, a truly remarkable place that he’d been eager to unravel. Until a few hours ago that is.
The scene he’d encountered upon entering the Alchemist’s workshop had turned his blood to ice, the immortalized sight of Luke standing protectively in front of Ms. Fey, yet an unmistakably frightened look in his eyes. He didn’t want to believe what he was seeing.

“These incidents are connected,” Miles tells the SIU Director, in the earliest meeting with the man he can get. “They have to be. Someone is causing them, and leaving these marks behind, and, somehow, they’re getting away with it.” He straightens as much as he can, hands curling into fists. “Those that are guilty cannot be allowed to walk free. I will not let that stand.”
The Director regards him impassively, hands steepled together in front of his face.
“An interesting observation, Mr. Edgeworth,” he says, eventually. He lets out an exhale, then pushes himself up in his chair. “Though quite a lot for only one person to handle on their own, surely.” He cocks his head, and offers Miles the barest hint of a smile, eyes sharp. “Why don’t we pair you with someone that can help split the work?”
He, as Miles already suspects, is not talking about Detective Gumshoe.
