Summary
“You’re the first person I talked to in a long time,” the boy says quietly.
What Pete wants to tell him is that he hasn’t talked to any other living person in a long time either. What Pete wants to tell him are things like friendship makes no sense when all we can look forward to is losing each other and your lips are too pretty. What Pete thinks would be best to tell him is to go, get lost, and never come back.
“Pete,” he says instead, “my name is Pete.”
For the first time, the boy’s pretty lips curl into a smile. “My name is Patrick.”
