Work Header

I'm a little plain but that's okay

Summary:

Jungkook presented as a beta so he was essentially kicked out of his rich family and then he meets rich people at his family party.

That's it. That's the idea. Basically. I'll probably adjust it as I write more.

Notes:

I love omega koo I think it's one of the cutest things ever but I was curious what a beta koo would be like through my eyes (still my baby duh)

This is all fiction, so of course none of these ideas are meant to reflect the real members of BTS. You know what I mean.

It's still pretty prologuey so yh it doesn't make much sense I'm sorry

Chapter 1: an intro of sorts

*Hi! This is Jungkook.*

He smiles with his cute overbite showing, cheeks ready for squishing.

*He is a beta.*

[Disappointed sound in the background]

His smile drops, suddenly overcast with a nervous look at himself. "What's wrong with me? Why are you disappointed...? What did I do wrong...?"

"You're a beta, Jungkook-ah. You're not special like the rest of them." The voice of his mother looms over him, a shadow cast upon his face.

(Who is them?)

"You know, the other genders!" Her voice echoes with concern and a sigh. "Seriously, Jungkook-ah, you should know better! You're going to be one of the normals now."

(Normal?)

"As a beta, you should know that your superiors are the alphas and the omegas. They're special. You're unfortunately not. You're a nobody from now on."

Jungkook's face is laced with hurt. His mother is ignoring him by closing her eyes the entire time she is having this conversation.

"Jungkook-ah, because I have raised you for the past sixteen years, I will be nice. You won't be disowned, but from now on, do not associate yourself with the Jeon family in public. Although you are a Jeon by blood, you are no longer a main member of the family."

Jungkook thinks about the outcast members of families like his are shamed and scorned, and yet even though they were a public humiliation to them, some main members found amusement in, for a lack of better words, bullying them.

He wasn't sure how to comprehend all of this. After years of being told he would present as an alpha or an omega, and that being a beta was not an option, even though he couldn't decide for himself.

[It's shameful being a beta, you know! You're just...boring! It just means that, you know, there's nothing special about you.]

"I am?" Jungkook bites at his lip, eyes starting to well up with tears.

[It's such a shame as well; he was the Jeon's only hope, you know. The older brother turned out a beta and ran away from home, and the Jeons were betting on their youngest to be an alpha so he could continue the line. Shame that one of the bastard lines will have to take over the main line.]

(Bastards? Main line?)

"Soojin must be pissed. She always prided on being the daughter of the legal wife, proud to be the next one to carry on the lineage, but now all her half siblings are besting her with their alpha and omega kids."

"Ugh, those rich families and their confusing lines. I don't know which child is from which parent, all the illegitimate children get muddled up in my head."

(Wait, there's more children?)

"It's weird, you know, how Junghyun and Jungkook were the only children of the main line. Normally there would be more kids, but looking at the other lines, they seem to have plenty of choices to pick from now that Jungkook's a beta."

"But what's wrong about being a beta?" Jungkook asks, slowly starting to shrink into himself as he hears more of these words.

"I mean, there's nothing wrong, I guess. It's not like you're useless or anything, but it's nothing to scream about either. It's okay, Jungkook-ah. Perhaps you were never destined for greatness. Perhaps the main Jeon line was never meant to amount to anything."

"I- what happens to me then?" Jungkook trembles, avoiding the disappointment on her face.

"I don't know, you'll be let off I guess. Away from the Jeon family. Away from us."

[Lights black out.]

Chapter 2: a little after getting kicked out

Summary:

A little bit of world building, sorry if it's a bit messy and doesn't make sense. A little peek into jk's life.

Chapter Text

Jungkook tried to smile as brightly as possible when greeting the customer, a notepad in his hand, ready to take the couple's order. He didn't feel so hot today, his shirt collar feeling uncomfortably tight and head was aching. It was more common than not to feel this way if he was honest.

He gave them a quick bow before heading off to the kitchen to give the order written down and then picked up a plate of food to take out to another table.

He glanced at the clock. Great. Only an hour left to go.

-

"Bye." He bowed at some of his co-workers in the changing room before leaving. He had another shift at the nearby convenience store, which required less social interaction because he never had to instigate conversation in this part time job, thankfully. He sat there and scanned things, which was usually quite uneventful because hardly any customers came in during that time.

For the more rowdy customers, he normally remained rather meek and submissive anyway, so he never seemed much like a threat to them. However, he'd get snarky comments time to time from drunk alphas who'd tell him "it was a shame he wasn't an omega because he'd look so pretty on his knot," which quite frankly was disgusting to hear.

He was lucky as a beta, he guessed. No one ever took a second glance at him.

He watched the TV placed near the till, seeing the news proudly proclaim that they'd found another presented omega and rescued them from their terrible lives.

The government were good at that. Finding any omegas or alphas who were outside the so called "royal" families and taking them away from their lives to integrate them into the "royal" families.

They weren't called royal because they were in line to the throne, but merely believed that alphas and omegas were meant to be leaders, to procreate humans of excellent genes, and that because there were so little of them, making up a small percentage of the world, that they were more special, that they were the chosen ones.

The doors slid open, indicating that someone had entered. Jungkook didn't think much of it, going back to his homework with the TV quietly playing in the background.

Then a hand placed a bowl of instant noodles on the table, making Jungkook look up to see a man wearing a mask over his lower face and a cap shielding away his eyes. He looked rather nervous, eyes darting back and forth, but Jungkook scanned the noodles anyway. "That'll be 1,345 won. Do you want anything else?"

He pointed at the fried chicken displayed, kept heated under a light. Jungkook nodded, placing it in a paper bag on top of the ramen noodles. "Okay, that'll be 2,095 won."

He grabbed out his wallet - which looked expensive - and took out a 10,000 won note. Jungkook hurriedly gave him the change as he felt slightly awkward with the man watching him.

He grabbed the things, going off to the back to make himself the ramen, Jungkook going back to his homework. Things were fine.

He couldn't help the suspicious feeling settling in the back of his mind.

-

When he was finally off work, he let out a sigh of relief, stretching out his arms.

He always liked the walk back home, seeing as he wasn't consumed by panic of being late, even if he clearly wasn't. It was dark, but not necessarily that quiet. The streets were still lively with people partying like there was no tomorrow, and he slightly envied their freedom.

Sure, they probably had their own problems and struggles to deal with, and that one shouldn't be so quick to wish for someone else's lifestyle, but he couldn't help but miss the days of no troubles on his young self.

-

10am, Jungkook had to go and babysit. It was another side job of his because he could always use having an extra couple of won in his wallet. It wasn't terrible anyway, the kids he looked after were adorable and particularly sweet with him.

Their mother was a single beta mum, working a relatively well paying office job but it meant that she was out for most of the day. She lived in the same apartment block as him, so he offered to look after her kids as he already looked after them when she was in a pinch.

She'd felt guilty he'd offered his time like that without paying so she ended up giving him a relatively good amount when he babysat, and occasionally invited him over for dinner and fed him when he was short of money.

He was lucky he had someone like that.

-

"Hey." Jungkook slipped off his shoes, a smile on his face as the two children dashed towards him. He ruffled their hair, slipping off his shoes as he checked the fridge for a neatly written note from their mum.

"Mummy left already, but she told us to be good for Kookie-oppa!'

"Ah, is that so?" He laughed, Yuna was so cute. She clung onto his leg, holding it tightly between her small hands as she continued to babble on. Both of them hadn't started school yet so either their grandma would come over and look after them, although Jungkook also helped out occasionally to lessen the load for their grandmother.

"Have you two eaten yet?" He rolled up his sleeves, picking up some of the toys littered over the floor.

"Mhm! I had cereal!" Yuna giggled, taking the toys Jungkook passed over to her to put in their toy box.

"What about you, Mino?" He asked the boy quietly sitting on the couch and watching TV.

"Eung." He made an affirmative sound. He got up, waddled to Jungkook and fell into his open arms. It made Jungkook beam with joy, seeing Mino snuggle into his chest and hearing him mumble that he missed Jungkook. He was adorable.

"Is that so?" He grinned at him, showing off his bunny smile and scrunched nose, ruffling his hair as he told him Mino was a good boy.

"What about me, Jungkookie-oppa?!" Yuna clung onto his shirt, staring up at him with large innocent eyes.

"You too, Yuna." He smiled, patting her hair too.

"Yay! You know, there's this new game that grandma bought for us today! Come and play with us!" She tugged him by the sleeve, humming a happy tune.

-

Jungkook could remember the tiny body of Mino when he was born. He'd recently moved into his apartment, with suspicious looks from the owner of the apartment building, and he saw a woman entering the lift when he was returning home from his crappy part time job.

She looked rather flustered, holding her daughter's hand tightly and fear washing over her face. Jungkook entered the lift with them, looking at them in concern although not saying anything because he didn't dare to intrude: he was always told by his mother to stay quiet because his input wasn't needed.

"Are you okay?" He asked her, seeing her tremble and look incredibly anxious.

"Uh... I think my water broke..." She said barely above a whisper.

"Why aren't you going to the hospital then, ma'am?" He asked just as quietly, watching the little girl stare at them both with big eyes.

"I- my daughter, I need to get her to the apartment. No one else can look after her if I bring her to the hospital." She looked teary, her figure shrinking.

Jungkook held himself back, wondering if it was a good idea to offer his help. "I can help? I can take her back to your apartment or I can look after her while you give labour?"

She also looked conflicted, brows furrowing as she glanced back and forth between him and her daughter.

"...I think I can trust you. I have a feeling about you, so you better not betray it. Look after her." She squinted her eyes at him, taking a good sniff, and then nodded.

And thus, his sixteen year old ass came along for the birth of Mino.

-

"Is mummy gonna come out yet?" She stood in front of him, hands on her hips as she pouted at him. She seemed strangely comfortable with him, attempting to engage in conversation with him and tugging gently on the sleeves of his hoodie.

"I don't know, uh..." He paused - he didn't catch her name the first time round.

"Yuna! It's Kim Yuna, okay!" She puffed her cheeks up, a little reminiscent of a chipmunk.

"Okay." He laughed a little, hesitantly reaching out to ruffle her hair. "Miss Kim Yuna."

"Mhm!" She bobbed her head cutely, snuggling closer to him.

Jungkook worried if it was normal for kids to be this affectionate to someone they didn't know. He hoped it wasn't.

-

It had been many hours later before the doctor came out to tell him how successful the birth went. A boy had been born.

Was it weird he felt slightly proud of Ms Kim, even if he had no part in the actual pregnancy itself? It made him a little sad though, seeing that it was only him and Yuna waiting outside.

Yuna fell asleep quite some time ago, head gently tucked into his shoulder and resting on his lap. He stroked her hair, watching her sniffle and rub her nose against his shirt.

"You can visit her if you want. She's still awake." The doctor reminded him, letting the nurse guide the two in.

-

"He's still so tiny." Jungkook cradled Mino in his arms, awed by the small babe peering up at him with watery eyes and still rather wrinkly skin.

"Mhm." Mrs Kim smiled warmly at Jungkook, staring at her son with sparkling curiousity. She invited him over, a couple weeks after the birth when she finally managed to catch him going back to his apartment.

"It's Seoyeon, by the way."

Jungkook tilted his head slightly in confusion.

"Me." She laughed, looking at the perplexed look on his face. "So you stop calling me Mrs Kim. I'm not married, first of all, nor am I that old."

"Ah...okay, Seoyeon-ssi."

"Noona, please. I'm only 23." She patted Jungkook's hair gently as she told him her age.

"Ahhh..."

"What do you mean 'ahhh'? Do I look that old?" She pursed her lips, looking a little put out.

"No noona, not at all!" He scrambled to deny the statement, because truthfully, he could never tell someone's age with their face. Oops.

She sighed, looking a little forlorn. "It's okay." She laughed a little, tinged with a little sadness. "I've aged a lot since being a mum. Everyone else is out there, making the most of their life, and I'm here, doing god knows what." She stroked Yuna's hair, who was napping in her lap.

"Noona..." Jungkook stared at her sadly, feeling terrible that he couldn't think of anything comforting to say.

"I have a friend, you know, she's really doing well for herself and I'm so incredibly proud of her...but sometimes I wonder what I could have been if I didn't become pregnant so early." She brushed the soft cheeks of her daughter wistfully, looking incredibly poignant.

"My mum, you know, she kicked me out of the family because I became pregnant at 20. She was livid." She sighed. "Anyway, enough about me lamenting about how tragic my life is." She brushed it off, sounding much cheerier. "Tell me about you, Jungkook-ah."

-

Seoyeon went to have a nap with Yuna, feeling lured by sleepiness, leaving Jungkook alone with Mino still tucked in his arms.

It was magical, having this tiny human stare up at him, so innocent and fragile and dependant. His weight caused a nice soreness in his arms, unused to the position.

Jungkook never got to interact with anyone younger than him when he was part of the Jeon household, one being because his mother was never interested in having more kids and two, because his mother never wanted her kids to interact with the 'bastard children'.

Generally, alphas and omegas were more fertile than betas. That's why they were typically seen as the ideal pairing, and typically more celebrated when they managed to get pregnant. Betas like him, however, went across a spectrum of percentages of fertility. Where alphas and omegas typically fell in between 100-80%, beta fertility ranged from 80% (if you were really lucky) to 0%.

You'd normally know from a doctor's visit. He went once to check and he was devastated. It was abysmally low, 10%, which made slightly bitter at his second gender. He hated that he probably would never be able to hold his own baby in his arms, his own little family to have when his own flesh and blood had kicked him out without much regard.

Perhaps it was too young to think about having kids, but that was the irony of it all. All the media he grew up watching displayed a particular mindset against alphas, omegas and betas.

When omegas got pregnant, it was never to call them a slut or a whore. It was a celebration of how fertile they were. Being pregnant young was never an issue to society when it came to omegas, because that's what they were expected to do.

Honestly, for a society that claims to be so advanced, there were still many traditional beliefs encouraged.

While betas used to be higher socially than omegas, the new act of collecting omegas and alphas to integrate into the higher class shifted that balance. The working class became made of betas, and the small proportion of alphas and omegas became higher class.

And so there became a shift in attitudes. Alphas who were already consistently considered high of importance and omegas who found a new, more respected standing became the norm.

He stared at the little boy in his arms, once again, wondering what he'd present at. He couldn't give a damn, really, but he knew that some families had hopes of having an alpha or omega child to bring their family of a higher status. He hoped life would treat him well.

-

Jungkook checked his mailbox quietly, not expecting much. Perhaps a bill, a couple delivery service menus and random leaflets, but not much.

He was wrong. There was a thick piece of card lying amongst the flimsy paper.

It was a beautiful matte black, with his name handwritten in silver ink. He flipped it behind, seeing the dark red wax seal of the Jeon family.

He gently opened the envelope, mindful of the wax.

"Jeon Jungkook,

You are cordially invited to the Jeon Christmas Celebration.

Dress Code: Formal.

Date: 25th December 2019

Time: 6pm"

Underneath it sat the address of the main house, his old house.

He'd been expecting this, but also not really because they hadn't contacted him in three years. Perhaps they wanted to pretend he didn't exist for a bit, so they would forget about him.

It was no concern of his. He merely had to attend (otherwise his mother would try to erase his existence because if he couldn't even stand there and look pretty, he was useless to them).

He had a thought that he'd probably have to spend a while digging out his formal attire.

What a pain in the ass.

Notes:

Hi :) it's been a while. Don't mind me while I drop this rather nonsensical chapter. I've been procrastinating a lot. I don't really have motivation to write either haha.

Fun fact, when I do end up writing I end up jumping from all the things I've got started but never finished...so yeah things are written sometimes just not enough to finish a chapter.

I hope you have a lovely holiday and stay healthy in this cold weather. Thank you to everyone who left comments and kudos.

Please leave more nice comments, they feed me :) no pressure though.

Notes:

I'll see you if I manage to write the next chapter for this :) if you're interested at all it's okay if you aren't haha it is a bit all over the place but that's just me as a person
