Work Text:

“Where the hell is my phone?” Jiang Cheng wants to know and he carelessly throws Wei Wuxian’s back on the couch. “Wei Wuxian!” he bellows through the apartment, and he can hear Wei Wuxian giggling in his room.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Jiang Cheng mutters and marches over, throwing the door open without even bothering to knock and he goes cold when he sees his phone is lit up.

“What are you doing?” he asks, but he knows his brother.

He just knows him. And that glint in his eyes can’t mean anything good.

“I’m just checking your messages,” Wei Wuxian innocently replies and continues to scroll through Jiang Cheng’s phone.

He lunges forward, intent to get his phone back from Wei Wuxian, but Wei Wuxian knows him well enough by now to dodge him easily.

“I swear to all the gods, I’m going to kill you if you do something stupid,” Jiang Cheng threatens and Wei Wuxian grins at him.

“Something stupid like texting Lan Xichen?” he wants to know. “You two do have an awfully long chat going, here, little bro.”

Of course Wei Wuxian would hone in on that, of fucking course. It doesn’t matter that Jiang Cheng has tried to keep his crush on Lan Xichen hidden, Wei Wuxian has a knack for figuring these things out.

“And I am surprised how flirty Lan Xichen is with you,” Wei Wuxian goes on and Jiang Cheng’s heart goes into overdrive.

“He’s not,” he denies, because he’s not, but Wei Wuxian just laughs at him.

“I spent a fair amount of time with him, and you can believe me when I say he doesn’t act like that with just anyone. At least now I know why he’s always glued to his phone when I’m over.”

It sends a warm rush through Jiang Cheng to know that Lan Xichen treats him differently, that he’s waiting for his replies, but it still doesn’t answer the question just what the hell Wei Wuxian is doing with his phone. And in that particular conversation.

“Give it back,” Jiang Cheng demands and holds out his hand.

“Gladly,” Wei Wuxian says and hands the phone over without much protest.

Jiang Cheng is immediately on edge.

“What did you do?” he mumbles and checks the conversation with Lan Xichen and really, there it is.

The reason Jiang Cheng will have to commit fratricide.

Do you want to go on a date with me? it says in bold black letters, and the app helpfully tells Jiang Cheng that the message not only has been delivered, but it has also been read already.

Jiang Cheng stares in horror at his phone and when the two dots appear that let him know Lan Xichen is typing a reply, he calmly puts the phone away and walks out of Wei Wuxian’s room.

“Jiang Cheng?” he can hear him ask, but Jiang Cheng doesn’t stop.

He goes back to the living-room and gets Wei Wuxian’s phone, logs into it and immediately opens his conversation with Lan Wangji where he types the same message into the chat as Wei Wuxian did just a few minutes ago.

“Delete that, now!” Wei Wuxian screeches as he sprints through the apartment, but when he reaches Jiang Cheng he has already hit the send button.

If Jiang Cheng can never look Lan Xichen into his eyes, then Wei Wuxian should suffer the same fate with his Lan. Not that he will, because Lan Wangji is head over heels for Wei Wuxian and everyone knows it.

“Why would you do that?” Wei Wuxian asks in a horrified whisper and Jiang Cheng shrugs.

“Why would you send Lan Xichen something like that? I like him, even just as friends. I don’t want him to be distant to me again.”

“Jiang Cheng, the guy likes you, too. Is in love with you, actually, why won’t you see that? I just gave you a little nudge. But you might have just ruined the only good friendship I ever had in my life.”

“You don’t mean that,” Jiang Cheng says, because he knows his brother is an idiot but he can’t be that dense. “Lan Wangji will jump on the chance to take you out on a date. And besides, he’s not the only good friendship you have. Everyone loves you.”

“Yeah, right,” Wei Wuxian scoffs and then startles when his phone chimes.

No doubt a reply from Lan Wangji, going by how pale Wei Wuxian suddenly goes.

“Nie Huaisang, Wen Ning, Mo Xuanyu and even Wen Qing, they all love you,” Jiang Cheng lowly says and then nudges Wei Wuxian to unlock his phone.

“And Lan Wangji does too, though in a very different manner.”

Wei Wuxian blinks a few times, but then he takes a deep breath and goes back into the chat.

The smile is very slow to overtake his face, but it’s even brighter than usual and this time Jiang Cheng is prepared for the loud screech Wei Wuxian lets out.

“He wants to go on a date with me!”

“Of course he does,” Jiang Cheng tells him and then pats his arm.

“You should go get your man,” he advises and then walks back to his room, intending to pretend he never had a phone in the first place.

“Maybe you should check your phone, too,” Wei Wuxian says from the doorway, but Jiang Cheng shakes his head.

“It’s okay,” he gives back. “I know what he’ll say.”

And he does. Lan Xichen will be unfailingly polite, like always, but he’ll tell him no. He will be all nice about it, too, and Jiang Cheng is just not ready for that right now.

“You said I was oblivious and that Lan Zhan clearly loves me,” Wei Wuxian says and Jiang Cheng nods. “Then trust me when I say you’re oblivious as well and Lan Xichen clearly loves you, too.”

He gives Jiang Cheng one last smile and then leaves, presumably to finally get that kiss he has been fantasizing about as long as Jiang Cheng can even think.

Jiang Cheng gets the phone out of his pocket and fiddles a bit with it, debating if it is worth it to trust his brother or not.

In the end, he does. Wei Wuxian has never done anything to hurt Jiang Cheng and he hopes this will be the same.

He takes one last deep breath and then unlocks his phone, before he clicks on the new message.

With pleasure.
