Work Text:

How long should you wait to kiss the Symbol of Peace?

This was the question Hizashi had asked himself after every single date they’d had. Every time they stopped at the door to say goodnight he thought perhaps that would be it, the night he would finally pull All Might himself down into a perfect kiss to end the evening. But he chickened out every time.

Hizashi was a coward.

They’d been on four dates. Four wonderful dates, where Yagi sputtered and smiled and sometimes let out a booming laugh and Hizashi did everything he could to keep those reactions coming. He liked the way the corners of Yagi’s eyes crinkled when he laughed and enjoyed the way he’d fidget with the cuffs of his shirt when Hizashi complimented him. Yagi was the best sort of date, fun, flexible, and for some odd reason seemed content just to be spending time with Hizashi.

Four dates was longer than Hizashi had ever gone without kissing someone. Normally, the way these things went, he’d start kissing on the first date and stop come the third when he and whoever he was seeing decided they’d gotten what they needed out of the whole thing.

But Yagi...he was more precious than that. He deserved more. So Hizashi cowardly avoided kissing him even though it was all he could think about sometimes.

He sat in the break room between classes, folding a student’s English homework into a paper football. He flicked it across the table where he’d used cups and coffee stirrers to create goalposts and watched it go wide and tumble to the ground. Hizashi sighed and dropped his head onto his arms on the table.

“That’s the third one you’ve missed,” Shouta said, and Hizashi glanced up to find Shouta on the staff lounge couch swathed in his sleeping bag.

“Well hello to you too, listener,” he answered, mustering as much energy and good nature as he could in order to scare Shouta away. “Have a good nap?”

“Would be better if you’d stop flicking paper on the floor,” Shouta replied. “You usually have better aim.”

He got up to retrieve his fallen footballs and then turned to flick one at Shouta’s head. Disappointingly, Shouta caught it, then offered it back to Hizashi between his fingers. When Hizashi stepped forward to take it, he immediately pulled it back and locked eyes.

“Why are you moody?”

“I’m not,” Hizashi replied far too quickly for it to be true. He grimaced. “Give me the paper back.”

“You mean your student’s assignment that you folded into a toy,” Shouta replied.

“Yes.” Hizashi reached forward again to try and swipe it and Shouta was up, still in his sleeping bag. He dodged out of the way.

“Not until you tell me what’s got you in a mood,” Shouta repeated.

“I hate you,” Hizashi groused as he slumped onto the couch. Shouta joined him, offering the paper back to him which Hizashi was allowed to take this time.

“Is it about All Might?” Shouta asked as they sat shoulder to shoulder.

“Yes.” Hizashi laid his head against the back of the couch. “I don’t really know what I’m doing with him, Shou.”

Shouta made a noncommittal noise.

“We’ve been on four dates and I haven’t kissed him yet, and he hasn’t kissed me, and for some reason the thought of kissing him is terrifying? But I want to do it. I just don’t want to do it and have him say ‘oh no, this has been a whole misunderstanding, sorry Present Mic I don’t like you in that way’ or something.” He groaned, realizing how stupid it all sounded. “I don’t know why I’m so nervous.”

He felt Shouta shrug beside him. “I’m not the best at relationship advice, so I’ll give you the logical answer: you should talk to him about it.”

“Ugh!” Hizashi dramatically flopped so he was draped over Shouta, face buried in his shoulder.

“There, there,” Shouta replied in a falsely consoling tone as he pat Hizashi’s back.

“Yamada!” Yagi caught him in the hall, a large hand wrapping around his bicep to pull him to a gentle stop.

“Mighty man!” Hizashi smiled and stopped. Yagi led them down a less busy hall and then let go of him.

“I was wondering, I thought we might have a night in this evening? Watch a movie?”

A night in, Hizashi thought. He stared. It would be their first time in either of their apartments, spending time together, on a couch, in close quarters, what did it mean? He realized that he had waited too long to reply by the slightly crestfallen look on Yagi’s face.

“It is alright if you’re busy. We can always do dinner again sometime,” he said and Hizashi shook his head vigorously.

“No, no, just thinking about what movie we should watch. If you didn’t have one in mind already, that is. I’d love to - like to - uh, yeah. It would be good. Movie night. Your place? My place? I’ve got a big screen and a really good surround sound system if you wanted it to be my place but we can do yours too if that’s more comfortable…” He ran out of things to say and fell silent, glancing up at Yagi.

“Your apartment is just fine,” Yagi replied with a reassuring smile. “How about around seven?”

“Yes, yeah, alright. Seven it is. See you then, Yagi my man.” He grinned and tried to ignore the butterflies throwing a rave in his stomach.

“Have a good day, Yamada,” Yagi called after him as he headed down the hallway.

The moment classes were done, Hizashi retreated to his staff designated apartment and began to clean. He picked the underwear up off the floor, along with all the other laundry that had become piles all over his bedroom. He made sure all the dishes were washed, dried, and put away.

Hizashi even managed to wipe down counters and quickly clean the bathroom, which left him just enough time to figure out what sorts of snacks to have on hand for the movie. He pawed through his cupboards which were relatively bare. There was no point in keeping too much food around when staff meals were provided for, and he wasn’t sure what Yagi would like.

Glancing at the clock told him he didn’t have enough time to pick anything up so he dug around for menus and decided he’d offer to order something.

A few minutes before seven, a polite knock came at his door. He took a stilling breath and then hustled over, opening it. Yagi stood there, a gentle smile spreading across his face that made the corners of his dark eyes crinkle.

“I made onigiri,” he said and presented Hizashi with a tupperware container. Hizashi accepted it and stepped aside, motioning Yagi in. He came in and slipped out of his shoes before he continued further into the apartment. It seemed he’d dressed down for movie night, sporting a pair of soft pants and a UA sweatshirt. It was nice to see it.

“Thank you,” Hizashi replied belatedly, tearing his eyes away from Yagi long enough to shut the door. “I thought we could order food, too, if you’re hungry.”

“Oh, I had dinner but please don’t let me keep you from eating.”

Hizashi set the gifted food down in the kitchen and grabbed a plate to transfer them onto. Yagi joined him in the kitchen.

Hizashi glanced over. “Would you like tea? Water?”

“Tea would be nice. I can set up the kettle, don’t worry.” And he did, walking over to the electric kettle to fill it and turn it on. It was strange having Yagi here in his apartment, helping him put together snacks and drinks for a movie night.

While he arranged the onigiri on the plate a hand on his lower back startled him and he nearly crushed one. Yagi chuckled. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“No, no problem, I was just thinking.”

“Penny for your thoughts?” Yagi’s hand was warm through his t-shirt, his long fingers spanning across almost the entirety of his lower back. What would that hand look like holding his hips down? Sliding up along his side? Cupping his face?

He stared at the onigiri as he tried to take steadying breaths.

“Hizashi?” Yagi asked, now concerned as he rubbed Hizashi’s back. “Are you alright?”

“No,” Hizashi hissed and stepped away, trying to remember how to breathe. What was he supposed to do? What was Yagi doing? This was All Might, in his kitchen, touching him. Doing all the normal fifth date things that Hizashi wanted him to do, but it sent him spiraling.

Yagi remained where he was and emanated calm concern. “Hizashi,” he said again, very gently.

Hizashi finally turned to him. “I’m sorry,” he blurted out. “This is just, it is a lot.”

The look that crossed Yagi’s face nearly broke his heart and he wondered just how many times he’d heard that in his life.

“Right, of course, I’m sorry.” Yagi glanced away as he very clearly tried to tuck away whatever emotions Hizashi had just unearthed.

“That’s not - shit, that’s not what I meant .” Hizashi closed the distance between them and didn’t miss the way Yagi stopped himself from taking a hesitant step backward. “It isn’t you, it is me. I’m terrified I’m going to mess this up, that I’ve misread you, that I’m -” not good enough for you, came to mind but he bit down on it and clenched his fist and grimaced. He stared at the tile floor.

“Hizashi.” Yagi’s hand came to rest on his shoulder and Hizashi blinked back tears of frustration.

“I’m wild about you, Yagi,” he whispered, which was a feat in and of itself. “And I’ve wanted to kiss you for weeks and I’m too much of a coward to do even that.”

“Hmm.” It was a thoughtful noise that almost got Hizashi to look up, but he continued to stare at the ground instead. He didn’t want to see the look on Yagi’s face. Soon enough, he didn’t have a choice. Yagi slid his hand up to press two fingers beneath Hizashi’s chin, tilting his head up to meet a gentle electric blue gaze.

Hizashi closed his eyes against it, but Yagi brushed his thumb against his lower lip.

“Hizashi, look at me,” Yagi insisted. Hizashi let out a loud huff and finally opened his eyes, helpless.

“How about I kiss you?” Yagi smiled. “Easier that way. Then you don’t have to worry.”

“Oh.” Hizashi’s eyes widened, cheeks heating. “Well, I - if you’re looking for permission then, yes?” He nearly squeaked at the end.

Yagi hummed and leaned forward, pressing their lips chastely together. It was soft and dry and Hizashi’s eyes fluttered closed.

“See?” Yagi murmured, mouth close to his. “It is alright.”

“Yes,” Hizashi murmured as he opened his eyes and chased his mouth for another kiss. Yagi’s hand shifted to cup the side of his face, holding him still as they exchanged soft brushes of lips. Then Yagi’s tongue brushed against his lower lip and he yielded, opening his mouth as heat rushed from his lips all the way down to his belly.

He made a keening sound that he wanted to disown and could feel Yagi vibrate with a chuckle. Hizashi was backed against the counter, Yagi’s other hand coming to rest on his hip as they stood and indulged each other.

Finally, Yagi pulled back and stroked Hizashi’s cheek with his thumb. “How was that?”

“Good,” Hizashi replied, his brain momentarily offline as he leaned forward to bury his face in Yagi’s shoulder. “Shit.”

“Language,” Yagi teased as he hugged him close. “Should we pick a movie? Take our snacks and tea and settle in?”

“Only if you promise more of that,” Hizashi insisted.

“Gladly,” Yagi whispered into his ear and then slid a hand down to grope playfully at Hizashi’s ass.

“Oi!” Hizashi shot Yagi a playfully scolding look. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

Yagi met his look with a grin. “I never do.”
