It happened so fast - in the blink of an eye, one might say. One moment he was standing in front of me, laughing, and the next, I was pinned against the wall. His hands encircled my wrists and his body lay flush against mine.
I was startled, to say the least. This was my best friend, my adorable, goofy Tae-Tae, and he had... changed? I wasn't sure what was happening. He had never shown interest in me before, and certainly not like this: breathy, eyes heavy lidded with a certain sharpness to them. A sweet scent filled the air, making me feel slightly dizzy.
Taehyung's face came closer to mine, and I internally panicked. NO. This is not what I want happening. I do not want to kiss my best friend. His lips narrowly missed my own, but before I could breathe a small sigh of relief, the panic came rushing back as he growled a low "Mine," in my ear.
My reply came out shaky, clearly betraying my emotions. "Wh... what?"
"Mine," he murmured into my ear, his voice a little deeper, with a little huskiness to it.
"Tae, I don't think --" My rebuttal was cut off by his lips on my neck. I hadn't been touched in what felt like forever, so the feeling of his own touch sent shivers down my spine. And yet... it felt so wrong.
I tried to gently push him back, but was met with a deep growl from his chest, something I had never heard from him before. "Tae, stop." My pleas fell on deaf ears. He continued running his lips from my ear to my collarbone. My body screamed so good. My mind told a different story. Though that same sweet scent was making it hard for my brain to argue.
Risking his frustration (and my dignity), I shoved him a little harder. It was met with more than frustration; it was.... anger? No. Determination: he had been presented with a challenge. His eyes burned like fire - almost glowing, though I didn't see my best friend in them. He was long gone.
In one graceful, fluid movement, he grabbed my arms, pinned me against the wall again, and had his mouth on my neck. Only this time, pain blossomed from the touch of his lips. Or rather, his teeth. They had a defined sharpness to them that had allowed him to pierce the skin at the crook of my neck.
It was all I could do to stand in shock and agony as the man who used to be my best friend sunk his teeth into my flesh, and bit, hard. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as the pain set in, my body too shocked to do what my mind screamed at it to do. Kick him, hit him, punch him! Do something!
I could hardly feel him pull away. His lips were stained red with blood -- my blood, as he licked them clean. I stared at him in shock, a tear trailing down my cheek. What was I even doing? My so called best friend was, what, a vampire freak? Who just bit me. And I was still standing there. Like an idiot.
The kiss shattered my stupor. His lips on mine had me crashing back to reality. When he realized I wasn't kissing back, he pulled away slightly. I came to my senses and seized the opportunity to push him back and run out of the room toward the kitchen. He'd let me go. And now I had no idea what to do.
As if on cue, the front door opened, and Jin stepped inside. He took one look at my face - crying, one hand holding my dripping neck, blood stained blouse - and rushed to my side, ignoring the open door. His eyes had fury and worry in them, and they seemed to flash gold briefly in the light. "Jiyeong, who did this to you?" Jin's arms encircled me, but I quickly tore away - partly from fear, partly from worrying about the bloodstains I'd get on his nice shirt.
Instead, he brought me a chair and gently helped me sit, before running to the bathroom. He came back with a first aid kit and gingerly offered a hand so as to clean my own. "What happened? Who did this?" Who did this, he asked. Not what. I took a shaky breath before stuttering out, "Tae-- Taehyung." Jin's eyes flashed to anger again as I put my hand in his. His touch was gentle.
Yoongi was next to step inside, arms full of bags of food from their run to the restaurant. He shut the door and placed the bags on the table before taking in the scene in front of him. Like Jin, Yoongi's eyes flashed with anger and worry at the sight of a bloody girl sitting at the kitchen table. "Who... what happened?"
"Taehyung," was the only word out of Jin's mouth. Yoongi clenched his jaw and muttered, "I'll call Joon. And then I'll murder Taehyung," before picking up his phone and heading back toward Tae's room. After a few moments of him muttering into the phone, I heard a loud bang, presumably Yoongi busting into the room. Only, he returned moments later looking even more angry.
"He's gone," Yoongi said through gritted teeth. Jin had finished cleaning my hand and looked up at him. "What do you mean, gone?" He started cleaning my wound and I winced from the sting.
"I mean, he isn't there. He left. Out the window, most likely. I'll go look for him." Yoongi turns to walk away just as Namjoon bursts in the door.
"Where's Taehyung?"
"Gone," is Yoongi's reply. He steps around Joon to walk toward the door, but is stopped by a hand on his shoulder. "Where do you think you're going?" Joon asked breathlessly. He'd been running, I could tell.
"To find him," is Yoongi's reply.
"I don't think so. You'll end up killing him."
"That's the plan, yeah."
"You're staying here. Understood?"
Yoongi rolled his eyes and grabbed a chair, bringing it over to the empty space in front of me. Namjoon stood behind, seemingly ready to catch him if he were to try to go run off after Tae. "Jiyeong," Joon started, "can you tell us what happened?"
My resolve broke. Another stupid tear slid down my face, and I caught it, angry at myself for being so weak against my former friend. "Tae and I, we were just in his room, joking, and... and he grabbed me." Tears started falling faster now. I let them. "I tried. I tried to push him away and I told him to stop, but then he just.... bit me. Like, actually fucking bit me. Who the fuck does that?" I was angry and rambling and.... and scared.
If the guys were surprised, they didn't show it. They were angry, sure. But they weren't surprised that a person had actually bitten another fucking human being hard enough to draw blood? Namjoon's knuckles turned white as he gripped the chair, and Yoongi's face turned to one of stone. "Hyung," Joon started, facing Jin. "I knew it was a possibility, but not within our own house."
"You knew what was a possibility?" I questioned, wincing as Jin placed a large bandage on my wound. Namjoon stayed silent, his eyes betraying what his mouth would not. That he just gave away part of a secret. One they all knew. One they were keeping from me. "What was a possiblity?" I heard him mutter a soft "Fuck" underneath his breath before answering me.
"That you would be marked."
"Marked? What the hell are you talking about?"
"Taehyung - he's an Alpha. As am I. And Yoongi here." If he expected this explanation to clear things up, he was wrong. "A..... what?" I asked with a confused look. Yoongi spoke up. "An Alpha. You know, how in a wolf pack, there's Alpha, Beta, and Omega, yeah?" He waited for my response - a nod - before continuing. "Well, Tae, Joon, and I are Alphas. Although, Joon is the Alpha of the pack." His expression never wavered, never gave off a hint that he was acting or lying. He wasn't a good liar anyway.
Still, I found it hard to believe. I laughed shortly. "You mean to tell me that you three are - what, wolves?"
"Not necessarily," Jin explained. "Not wolves in the common 'werewolf' sense. But the Alpha, Beta, Omega dynamics, yes. We find a mate, and they are marked. To show other Alphas that this person has chosen to be with us. Like... almost like a wedding ring. Except, you can't break a mate bond."
The look on my face must have betrayed my thoughts. Oh my god, these guys are actually insane and I'm just now realizing it.
"I know you think it's crazy," Joon says, "But we are telling the truth."
Okay then, why not humor them for a moment?
"Okay, let's pretend I believe this. How... why did he mark me? I didn't choose him. He was my friend for hell's sake, not a lover."
"Naturally, when Omegas go into heat, we can sort of... tell. By your smell," Joon answers.
"So he chose me because I stink?" I raised an eyebrow. "That's some way to choose a partner."
"No, you dolt," Yoongi interjects, "it's because you smell good."
"Wait, hold up. You said Omegas. I'm not an Omega. There is no possible way. I'm not --" I cut myself off before I finished saying crazy. "I'm not an Omega."
"Maybe not directly, but you are descended from a long line of them. It's in your blood. Maybe only barely, but it's there," Jin explains.
"And what the hell do you mean, I smell good? And heat? Like a cat? This is just... insane." I got up to leave, but Yoongi grabbed my wrist gently, silently asking me to stay. "I can prove it," he stated. "Joon. I'm gonna need some help." Namjoon put his hand on Yoongi's shoulder as I sat back down. "A wolf's scent glands are right under the ear," Yoongi started explaining. I nodded, an eyebrow raised, wondering what this had to do with proving that he's an Alpha.
"I can promise I won't hurt you," he said, reaching to cup my cheek. His face leaned toward mine and I backed away, panicked. "I'm not going to kiss you. Or bite you, if that's what you're scared of. I swear." I decided to trust him, and he leaned into me, his breath tickling my ear. "Take a deep breath," he whispered, and I complied.
His scent washed over me as I heard him breathe in my own. He smelled like sandalwood. He sat back down quickly, jaw clenched.
"I'm still not sure how this... is..." I trailed off as I watched his eyes glow - actually glow - a bright amber before his lips parted slightly to show his growing fangs peeking from under his upper lip. He let out a soft sigh as his eyes closed in what looked like pleasure. A low rumble started in his chest and a different smell hit me in full force - honey, cinnamon, and chai.
My mouth began watering and my mind began getting fuzzy. I kept inhaling the delicious scent, and the more I did, the more foggy my brain was. Just one taste. One little taste. One kiss wouldn't hurt, my brain told me. Before I could get up, Yoongi cried out in pain and the brain fog slowly dissipated. I no longer smelled the delectable scents I had before. Yoongi was wincing as Namjoon gripped his shoulder so hard that his knuckles were white.
"Stand down, Yoongi," he said firmly, but quietly. I watched as Yoongi gulped and nodded. "Thanks." Joon just nodded and released his grip. "What... was that?" I asked.
"That," Yoongi explained, "was an Alpha catching the scent of an Omega in heat."
My face flushed. Heat. Like a cat, begging for sex. I didn't feel like that in the slightest, though. "When Omegas are in heat, they give off a different scent. Just like when an Alpha starts to rut, there is a different pheromone. To Omegas, it's sweet and inviting. To other Alphas...."
"It stinks," Joon interjected.
"But I'm not," I began, "I'm not in... heat." I mumbled the last word, clearly embarrassed.
"You may not even feel anything, since you don't have but a drop or two of Omega blood in you," Jin said. "But once an Alpha gets that scent, it's hard to control themselves. That's why Yoongi here asked Joon for help."
"But how can you control yourself, Joon? And what about you, Jin? You're not an Alpha? And why can you control yourself from a distance, Yoongs?" I couldn't believe I was actually asking these insane sounding questions. But that little show with Yoongi had me convinced, especially since he wasn't that stellar of an actor.
"I'm the leader of the pack for a reason," Joon stated. "I've got myself under control. At least, my Alpha senses, anyway."
"I have some control over my Alpha senses, especially if the scent of an Omega is faint. I just haven't gotten full control yet," Yoongi explained.
"And I'm a Beta," Jin said with a small smile, "which means neither Alpha nor Omega pheromones affect me. And I don't go into ruts, and I don't go into heat."
"So.... a human, then," I said.
"Pretty much, yes. I still have heightened senses and reflexes, however."
"So what happens now? I'm marked, so that means I've been mated, right? What if an Omega was taken against her will? Like me? Don't I get a say? You said that you can't take back a Mark - can you override it or something?" I was starting to panic.
Suddenly, a sharp pain hit my chest. It was a deep, burning pain, so agonizing that it caused me to cry out as tears pricked my eyes once again. The three guys looked startled, then worried. "What's wrong?" Joon asked, coming to sit by my side as I clutched at my chest, trying to ease the pain somehow. I gasped and managed to get out, "it hurts!" Tears streamed down my face.
"What hurts? What are you feeling?"
"Pain, you idiot," Yoongi snapped at him before taking my hand tenderly in his. It felt... honestly like I had lost something, someone dear to me. Grief. I felt as if my heart was breaking. One word stuck in my mind: gone. It kept repeating in my head and I soon found myself mumbling it aloud.
"Joon, it's the bond," Jin realized. I looked to him for explanation with tear filled eyes."When an Alpha mates an Omega, they can feel each other's emotions. Usually it's controllable, but Taehyung... he hasn't had time to learn to control his Alpha senses. So everything he senses or feels, so do you."
"But why p-pain?" I managed to choke out between sobs.
"Because he lost the one he loves," Yoongi said. He got up, shrugged on a jacket, and grabbed his phone.
"Wh-who?"
"You."
Namjoon got up and put his jacket on as well. "Take care of her while we're gone, hyung." Jin nodded in response.
"Where a-are you going?" I sniffled and Jin held my hand where Yoongi once held it. Joon looked at me and smiled softly.
"To find Taehyung."
