Work Text:
Katsuki Bakugo was someone who liked certainties. He was certain he would be one of UA’s top students. He was certain he’d be the number one hero one day. He was certain that when he wakes up at six in the morning, none of the other extras would be awake to bother him either. And he was fairly certain he hadn’t left the dorm kitchen a smoking mess when he’d gone out for his morning jog.
Walking into the kitchen to investigate, a scene of ingredients everywhere, utensils strewn about, and smoke escaping the oven gave a hint as to what had happened. “What the hell?” he grumbled, not knowing who else would be up at this time. It was only seven, on a Saturday no less. A small noise of surprise behind him alerted him to the other occupant of the kitchen. “Huh?” he asked, turning around to see Uraraka with cleaning equipment in her hands. A blush tinted her cheeks as she meekly smiled at the boy in front of her.
“Oh, hi, Bakugo. Sorry about the mess, I just wanted to try to make some cookies for everyone. To get in the Christmas spirit and all!” She beamed a bright smile before dropping her head and giving a resigning sigh as she made to clear the scene. Bakugo knitted his eyebrows, adding to his resting scowl.
“Tch, how the hell do you fuck up cookies?” The comment earned an “eep” from Uraraka, who floated away from the counter she was wiping down before she managed to control herself.
“Well, I’ve never made them before, but I found this recipe for cookies online.” She pointed to a piece of paper she had printed out that was sitting on the counter next to him. Bakugo picked it up, leaning against the counter as he investigated it.
“I figured it wouldn’t be that hard,” she continued, the blush on her face deepening, “But the batches just kept on coming out wrong. I kept mixing up things like tablespoons and teaspoons, and then I poured in too much sugar, and then I set the oven too high, and by that point, I’d used up all of the eggs, so I gave up.”
She rubbed her neck awkwardly as she stood in front of Bakugo, almost as if she’d been apologizing for failing to make the cookies correctly. Taking one more glance at the paper in his hands, the blonde looked back to the girl before placing the paper on the counter and beginning to walk out of the kitchen. “Jesus Round Face, how’re you supposed to be a pro if you can’t even follow basic instructions.”
The brunette made to retaliate but was cut off by someone calling over from the stairs. “Yikes, did Bakugo blow up the kitchen?” Kaminari had come down, with Mina and Sero in tow.
“Nah man, you would’ve heard him yell ‘DIE!’ first,” Sero replied, putting on his best Bakugo impression, which earned a laugh from the other two.
“Sparky! Soy Sauce! I’ll kill you!” Bakugo called out to the boys, only aiding in their mockery as they doubled over with laughter. “Like that, like that.” Kaminari managed out between wheezes.
As sparks crackled off of Bakugo’s palms, ready to decimate his classmates into next week, Mina’s voice came from the kitchen. “Were you trying to make cookies, Bakubro?” She held up the recipe paper Uraraka had printed. Following Mina out of the kitchen, Ochaco made to speak up and explain the situation, but was once more interrupted.
“Wow, Lord Explosion Murder can’t manage to bake a couple of cookies?” Sero snickered, earning another growl from Bakugo. Jabbing a thumb in Uraraka’s direction, Bakugo crossed his arms. “It was pink cheeks who messed up. I can make damn fine cookies if I want to.”
A devilish smile formed on Kaminari’s face as he stood with his hands on his hips in a challenging stance, “Oh, is that so? Why don’t you show us then?” Bakugo responded with an eye roll, “Cause I’m not your personal chef. Plus, we’re out of eggs now.”
Mina lined up with Kaminari, adopting his pose, her smirk forming. “Sounds like someone's scared.” Sero completed the trios stance, lining up behind Mina, “Yeah, someone who can’t make cookies.”
Bakugo stood for a second, incredibly annoyed and confused as to how his morning had come to this. But he hated the thought of backing down from the challenge. And he loved to show the extras his superiority in every skill.
“Fine, but only because I’m not doing anything else today. I’ll go grab those eggs, and when I come back, I’m going to make the best damn cookies you losers have ever seen.”
“I’ll go with you!” Uraraka piped up, jumping up to the group. The trio stared quizzically at the girl while Bakugo just glared. “What, why?”
The brown-haired girl did her best to stand up confidently, “Because it was me who used up the eggs. Anyways, if I learn how to make cookies from you, I can show that I can follow basic instructions, Bakugo.” She finished by crossing her arms, further solidifying her stance.
The trio stared wide-eyed, looking between the two, waiting for one to make the first move. Bakugo resolved first, uncrossing his arms. “Tch fine, just don’t get in my way.”
As the two left the room, Sero glanced over at Mina. “So, we’re putting one in the kitchen?” A diabolical aura surrounded Mina as her gaze grew confident. “Oh, we’re doing so much more than that.”
The walk to the corner store wasn’t long, typically a five-minute walk. But every second seemed an eternity to Bakugo as he walked alongside the girl who had seen it fit for her to come along. It was bad enough he’d already agreed to take on the losers stupid challenge, he knew bait when he saw it, but now he had to hold someone else’s hand along the way so he could teach them a basic task. Didn’t they know how to do stuff for themselves? How were they ever going to make it later if they couldn’t even follow basic orders?
And it wasn’t like he could ignore her either. At least the dunce faces that usually surrounded him had each other to distract themselves. Round Face just kept stopping to look around at all of the signs and decorations around the area. On more than one occasion, she’d even tried to call him over to admire some lame display that probably looked like the hundred others they’d passed already.
“Oh, Bakugo, look at this one! Look how pretty the flowers are.” She pointed towards a sign hanging in front of a shop that read ‘Merry Christmas’ with white and red roses surrounding it. Finally, having had enough, Bakugo turned to tell her off for coming along if all she was going to do was distract him but stopped when he turned to look at her.
The sight of the sign, mixed with her enthusiastic smile, the cold having deepened her blush and even reddening her nose, and her hair curling around her face to frame her signature round cheeks was one he wasn’t prepared for. As much as he’d acted like the opposite was true, he knew what all of his classmates looked like. But this time, there was a different feeling in his chest as if he was having trouble breathing. He didn’t like it.
He huffed in response, “Did you come along just to try and distract me?” Not caring to see her reaction, Bakugo turned, ready to get the trip over with. But he should’ve known how stubborn the girl was because she just fell into step with him yet again.
“You can take time to appreciate the world around you, ya know. You should loosen up a little; it’s Christmas time.” She spun around, throwing her hands in the air, throwing imaginary confetti around to emphasize her point. Bakugo continued to walk in silence, not acknowledging Uraraka’s festive gesture.
Finally, turning into the store, he was happy to be back on track. Just grab the eggs, and then get back to the dorms so he could make the stupid cookies and relax for the rest of the day. Maybe he would even get a head start on some of their homework.
Grabbing a couple of cartons, he made his way to the register, where Uraraka stood staring at the candy display. Looking through the selection, he figured she was staring at a mochi flavored kit kat bar.
After placing the eggs on the counter, he grabbed the bar and put it along with the other items. “What’s that for?” Uraraka asked, her trance broken.
"What do you think? I need you focused, so you don’t get in my way.” Bakugo replied, not looking up from the card machine as he finished his transaction. Tossing the candy bar her way, he walked towards the door, leaving Uraraka stunned as she looked at the candy in her hands before running out to catch up.
“How’d you know this was the one I wanted, though?” She asked once she’d reached the blonde. Bakugo scoffed, “It’s mochi, you’re like a sucker for that stuff.” He said it as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, which it was, but the sentence still caught Uraraka off guard.
“You noticed that?” Now it was Bakugo’s turn to be surprised, eyes widening as he realized the implications of what he’d said. Doubling down, he hunched his shoulders and began to walk faster. “Tch, whatever.” He glared forward, intent to get back to the dorms now more than ever.
Uraraka continued walking alongside him, humming a Christmas tune to herself as she enjoyed the candy. Noticing Bakugo’s sudden cold demeanor, she held out a piece. “Here, have some.” The boy kept his stare forward, not even casting a glance towards her. “Come on, Bakugo! You might actually like it.”
Finally cracking, he looked at the piece then towards her. “You know that’s for you, right?” His tone was almost offended, while still keeping his signature growl, yet Uraraka soldiered on. “Yeah, and now I’m offering you some.” Her cheerful demeanor wasn’t shaken at all. Taking the piece, Bakugo mumbled something that could be interpreted as “Thanks.” before taking a bite.
The candy was sweet, as he expected, but the warmth it gave him was unusual. “You like it?”
The humming, the smiles, the candy, and that goddamned feeling in his chest was going to kill him if he didn’t get to the dorms right now.
“Come on, Bakugo, just admit it’s good.”
He was going to snap. “Fine, it’s good! What do you care!?” He roared, which only brought out a laugh from Uraraka. He just wished this day would end already.
When they got back to the dorms, Sero and Mina were outside, using Sero’s tape to hang up mistletoe. “What’re you two doing?” Asked Bakugo.
“Aw, isn’t it obvious? We’re just getting into the Christmas spirit!” Mina replied, cheering as she angled the sprig just right. Deciding to ignore them, Bakugo attempted to push his way to the door. Before he could make it, Sero blocked Bakugo’s way.
“Whoa, dude looks like we’re underneath the mistletoe. Ya know what they say, a rules a rule.” Sero puckered his lips as he leaned in towards Bakugo, who let off a small explosion in his face. Mina laughed as Sero wiped the resulting soot off.
“Harsh, dude.” Ignoring him, Bakugo walked inside, pulling Uraraka along with him.
By this time, the rest of the students were up. Most seemed to be in the kitchen, fixing their breakfasts and discussing their plans for the day. Iida and Izuku were walking down the stairs when they noticed Uraraka and Bakugo walking in.
“Morning, Uraraka! Morning Kacchan!” Greeted Izuku, waving to the two. Iida gave his trademark robotic wave in acknowledgment of the two. “Good morning Uraraka. Good morning Bakugo. I hope you two are well.”
Uraraka waved back. “Morning, Deku! Morning Iida”, while Bakugo only grunted in reply. “Where were you two?” Izuku asked, looking towards the bag and the remains of Uraraka’s candy in her hands.
“Oh yeah, Bakugo was going to show me how to make cookies!” She gestured with her head towards Bakugo, who was still standing behind her, looking more annoyed with the fact that she continued to waste time. “I kinda kept ruining them earlier, but I’m determined to get it right!” She pumped a fist in the air, nearly hitting Bakugo, who had already begun to head towards the kitchen.
“Watch it, Cheeks. We’re already wasting time.” Uraraka waved a quick goodbye before joining Bakugo in the kitchen who had found the recipe paper and had started gathering what they’d need. Bakugo passed the items down the counter to Uraraka before moving to stand in front of her. “Alright, I’ll tell you what we need, and you try not to fuck it up.”
Uraraka fought to control the nerves that found themselves going crazy as she heard her task. “You’ve got it!” She replied with the certainty of a soldier. A small smirk appeared on Bakugo’s face. Maybe she could actually learn to do stuff and not be a useless extra. He’d remembered her performance at the Sports Festival, and he had to give props where it was due, yet he knew there was still a long way to go before she caught up to him, much less made it pro.
Bakugo scanned the paper before putting it on the counter for Uraraka to read. “Alright, what’s the first step?” Uraraka took a glance before beginning to gather ingredients. “Mix the dry ingredients.”
Before she could even grab the first measuring cup, Bakugo slammed his fist the counter. “Wrong already.” Uraraka looked up, concerned before noticing her mistake. “Oh oven.” she gave a small laugh to herself as she went to turn it on. “You’ve gotta focus,” was all Bakugo said in response, deciding to hold back his annoyance.
After Uraraka gathered all of the ingredients, with constant monitoring from Bakugo, Bakugo began mixing the ingredients. After mixing the first bowl, he moved on to the second. “Alright, I’m going to keep mixing here. Think you can handle adding in the other ingredients?” he asked with a smirk.
Uraraka pouted, putting her hands on her hips. “I am perfectly capable, thank you very much.” She said, shaking her head as she said it. She slowly added the eggs, waiting between each one so Bakugo could mix it in well.
The two slowly fell into a rhythm as they continued to work, no longer using words to communicate as they began to understand what the other needed. By the time Uraraka had finished adding the eggs and pouring in the contents of the first bowl, a comfortable silence had fallen over the kitchen, only being broken by the sounds of the mixing or the few students who were nearby in the dining or common areas.
As she poured the last remnants of the bowl in, Uraraka glanced up to realize Bakugo had been looking at her. “Uh, I think it’s time to add the chocolate chips now,” She tried to get his attention, but her voice became flustered.
“Huh?” was his only response before he looked around, slowly realizing what had happened. Shaking his head, he finally looked at her again, eyes filled with the familiar firey rage. “Then go get them!” All to happy to oblige, Uraraka turned with a face redder than it had been a few minutes ago.
“Everything going great, master chefs?” Had he not had the bowl in his hands, Bakugo might’ve shown Kaminari a fireworks show. “Go die!” was all he could respond with, however, which didn’t prove to be as effective. After a glance towards the ceiling, Kaminari leaned off of the counter. “Sounds great!” he replied, shooting a thumbs up before leaving to join the rest of the Bakusquad in the common area, snickering as he walked away.
Uraraka appeared behind Bakugo, holding up the bag of chocolate chips. “Uh, Bakugo? I got the chocolate chips.” Calming down now that Sparky was gone, Bakugo reminded himself of the task at hand.
“Right, let’s just finish this up.” After mixing in the chips, a slightly more awkward silence surrounding the two, they began to scoop out small balls that they placed on a baking sheet.
“Alright, go ahead and place the sheet in.” Bakugo picked up some of the tools they’d used before he turned to see Uraraka placing the cookies in. “Oh my god, do you do everything wrong?” He rushed to place the items in the sink as Uraraka stood up, confused.
“Alright, what’d I do now?” Bakugo brushed past her as he placed the sheet on a different oven rack. “Here, place it on this one. They cook more evenly this way.” Uraraka tilted her head as she looked at the sheets’ new placement. “Oh.”
Bakugo rolled his eyes. ‘Oh.’ What a reaction. “Can you just help me clean up now?” He asked, his exasperation showing. Uraraka made to clean herself up, nodding vigorously, “Yeah, yeah, of course.” Bakugo began setting a timer on his phone as Uraraka washed the dishes. The blonde was almost done wiping down the counter when a head of fluffy pink hair appeared in front of him.
“Mmmm, something smells amazing. Uraraka, you must’ve done an amazing job!” As Bakugo felt the heat rising to his face, he noticed Uraraka appear next to him, drying her hands. “Oh, thanks, Mina! Bakugo was amazing help too!”
Bakugo threw his hands in the air, “What do you mean? I did most of the work!” Mina snickered as Uraraka turned to the boy next to her, wagging a finger in his face. “Hey, I still did a lot of work!”
“Yeah, under my constant supervision!” Bakugo jabbed a finger back.
“Hey, that was only for the first few measurements!”
“Yeah, then what about placing the sheet on the wrong rack?”
“Hey, guys?” Mina asked, seeming to enjoy the show. The two adversaries snapped to look at the girl, an intense look on both of their faces. Mina pointed a finger above their heads, drawing their attention to a sprig of mistletoe hanging directly above their head, fastened unmistakeably by Sero’s tape.
A blush quickly covered the pairs face as Uraraka looked to the ground, and Bakugo immediately made towards the common area. The distant sound of explosions brought Mina to another round of laughter as Uraraka quickly made to distract herself by finishing their cleanup duties.
Kaminari let out a loud burp as he put his shoes on the table. “Ya know what, Bakubro?” He gestured with the cookie in his hand, “I’ll give it to you. You make a damn fine cookie.” Sero nodded along, holding his belly as he leaned back in his chair.
“All hail Lord Explosion Murder!” He exclaimed, holding up his mug full of milk.
“All hail!” came the rallying call around the table, students, holding up their mugs.
Bakugo stood, looking smug as he looked at the table full of satisfied students. A giggle behind him drew his attention as he caught sight of Uraraka still in the kitchen, eating a cookie. “What’s so funny?” he asked, making his way towards her. Uraraka’s eyes shot open when she’d realized she’d been noticed.
“Oh, nothing,” she replied, waving him away. Bakugo leaned over the counter. “Didn’t seem like nothing.” Uraraka let out another giggle. “It’s just,” she took a bite of her cookie, “I didn’t expect this from you.”
Bakugo’s eyebrows knit together in confusion. “Expect what?” Urarakas gaze fell on the cookie she slowly stirred in her mug of milk, a faint smile still on her lips. “This expert chef, please the crowd side of you.”
Bakugo rolled his eyes, “Eh, I just didn’t have anything better to do than wipe that dumb smirk off of Sparky’s face.” Uraraka looked up at Bakugo, eyes slowly examining the boy in front of her. “Mhm.”
Bakugo leaned in further, not entirely understanding why he could feel his heart beating faster, “And what’s that supposed to mean?” Another pause fell as Uraraka took a bite, eyes still locked with Bakugo’s.
“Oh, nothing.” By now, Bakugo could swear she could hear the pounding in his chest. Why was he so damn nervous all of a sudden? His palms began to sweat as much as they did in battle, much to his annoyance. Before either side could make another move, a shout came from the dining area.
“Gingerbread House Competition!” Bakugo let out an exasperated sigh as he lowered his face into the counter. Couldn’t those idiots go five minutes without making up some dumb nonsense? Sadly the cheers from the other students seemed to indicate that this would, in fact, be happening.
“Come on, Bakugo!” Uraraka exclaimed, tugging at his arm. “You want to go do that stupid shit?” he asked. Uraraka pulled again, “Come on, it could be really fun. Plus, you’d get to wipe the floor with them again.” She said the last line in a sing-song voice, doing her best to entice him.
Since when did she know how to get under his skin like that? She stood waiting with pleading eyes, somehow making her face seem rounder than before. “Ugh, fine.” As Bakugo let himself be dragged, he was beginning to wonder if this whole day was just one bad dream. However, as he looked at the girl pulling his arm, he figured he’d had worse nightmares.
“Alright, the rules are simple!” Announced Yaoyorozu, standing at the head of the table. “You’ll work in teams of two to create your own gingerbread house with the materials we’ve provided. After ten minutes, we’ll call time and then vote on our favorites!” A chorus of cheers went around as everyone began to pick their partners.
“Cheeks.” The gruff voice of Katsuki Bakugo came from behind Uraraka, startling her. “I want you on my team.” His voice was flat, leaving no room for questions. “Me?” Uraraka asked, confused as to why he would pick her of all people. Hadn’t he just spent the entire morning correcting her mistakes?
“Did I stutter?” Again, his voice remained level. Uraraka looked towards the ground, “Well, I was just wondering why, since, ya know, you’ve already seen me mess up so much today.”
Bakugo scoffed, “Yeah, but I’ve also seen you improve. You follow orders well, and I’ve heard you’re pretty good at art stuff.” Heat rose to Uraraka’s already rosy cheeks, as she stammered out an answer. “I-I-I d-don’t know if I’d s-say good. I just l-like to d-doodle a little bit.” Bakugo continued to stare off, arms crossed.
“Calm down, cheeks. You’ve just gotta focus, and you’ll do fine.” The girl paused for a second, taking a breath. “Uh, yeah. Right.” Since when was Bakugo oddly reassuring?
“Alright looks like everyone’s all paired up. Begin!”
Bakugo and Uraraka examined the tools in front of them. Different gingerbread pieces to be used as the main base, icing, different candies to be used as decoration, and small tools lay in front of them. “Alright, let’s get going,” Bakugo said, charging forward. Taking the icing and the pieces of gingerbread, he constructed the house quickly. Uraraka watched as he worked with precision, taking care as he placed the pieces together.
“Now,” Bakugo said, looking up at Uraraka with a smile, “Comes the fun part.” Bakugo pulled the chair next to him closer, gesturing for Uraraka to sit. “Come on. This was your idea.” Uraraka sat down quickly, an energetic smile on her face. She began to place the candy on to the house as Bakugo carved small details into the sides of the gingerbread. Once satisfied with his carvings, Bakugo joined Uraraka in working with the candy.
“Here, place the gumdrops where I put icing,” Bakugo said, grabbing the piping bag. The familiar rhythm from earlier returned as the two alternated between icing and gumdrop, creating a design on the roof. As Bakugo placed the last portion of icing, Uraraka quickly moved in, her hand brushing Bakugo’s as she placed the candy. A small noise escaped his throat as he quickly made to focus his attention on another part of the house.
Uraraka stared at the boy, hoping he’d look back to at least acknowledge the moment or his reaction. Finally, he glanced up to notice her gaze causing him to focus again on his work, with renewed energy immediately.
“What the hell are you staring at, get back to work.” Uraraka shook her head to clear her mind before nodding and grabbing some more candies to place.
Before long, time was called. “Step away from the houses!” Yaoyorozu called as her timer went off. Letting out a sigh of relief, Bakugo leaned back in his chair. Uraraka placed down her tools as she looked at their finished product before flashing a smile at Bakugo. She could’ve sworn she saw the ghost of a smile in return.
Iida walked around, handing out strips of paper to each person. “After we have had a chance to look at everyone’s creations, you will write down your vote on this paper and place it in the basket at the end of the table. Then votes will be counted and the winner announced.”
The first pair was Aoyama and Mineta, who had managed to use the candy to create an accurate recreation of Aoyama’s face. “What better decoration than moi to adorn this beautiful creation?”
The next pair, Mina and Hagakure, had used an excessive amount of the sprinkles with gumdrops strewn haphazardly throughout the scene. “Wasn’t this your idea?” Kaminari asked, staring in shock at the mess. “I never said I was an expert!” Mina replied, whacking the boy on the arm.
Tsuyu and Iida’s house was the exact opposite of the last, with each piece used placed with extreme precision. Iida stood with smug satisfaction, pushing his glasses up. “Behold, the artistic superiority of symmetry!” Mina leaned in to gawk at the attention to detail Iida had taken in the placement of their decorations.
Uraraka stood behind the pairs house as Bakugo kept his distance. “Wow, I love the intricate drawings in the side’s of the house!” Yaoyorozu praised. Uraraka’s smile grew wider as she pointed to her teammate. “Thanks, that was Bakugo’s idea.” Kaminari and Sero shared impressed looks while Kirishima cheered him on.
Ojiro and Koda’s house, in comparison, was relatively tame. However, extra care was taken with a few of the decorations. “Are those gummy people?” Hagakure asked, squealing at the adorable sight. They had used candy canes as legs to prop up the gumdrop body, with a chocolate head. Koda blushed at the comment as Ojiro nodded proudly.
There was no mistaking the creators of the next house with an icing lightning bolt design on the roof and small strips of tape hanging off of the roof overhang. “Hey no fair, we were allowed to use quirks?” Mineta whined. Yaoyorozu shrugged, “I see no problem with it. They gain no clear advantage from it.” The answer seemed to satisfy Mineta somewhat, and Sero grinned in response to the ruling.
Yaoyorozu certainly added her own flair to her and Jirou’s house as they used the candy to create castle-like tower structures. “How’d you even get that to hold?” Mina asked in amazement. “Anything holds with enough icing it seems,” Yaoyorozu stated proudly.
It was no surprise to anyone that Shoji and Sato’s house looked amazing. Sato’s baking experience had given him the ability to draw beautiful designs with the icing. “Wow! I didn’t even know you could get this much detail out of the pipers!” Uraraka gawked at the designs, much to Bakugo’s annoyance. Why hadn’t she done that with his work?
Kirishima and Tokoyami’s work was reasonably average, yet Kirishima proudly displayed it nonetheless. “I like the gumdrop snowman!” Mina called out, causing Kirishima to blush. “Thanks! I was also debating letting Tokoyami draw the icing pentagram but figured it’d clash with the vibe.” The class let out a laugh at the image before moving on to the last house.
Todoroki and Izuku’s house definitely took after its creators as half of the house was adorned with gumdrops and the other chocolate and PLUS ULTRA!’ was written on either side of the roof. “Hey look,” Kaminari pointed, “It’s Todoroki’s delicious brother, Gingeroki! Half chocolate, half gumdrop!” The group laughed, but Bakugo rolled his eyes.
Finally, now they were done looking at all of the dumb houses. He was one step closer to getting out of there. Looking back at the houses, he thought for a second before writing down ‘Sugarface and Octopus.’ Handing in his paper, he took his seat while they counted the votes.
“Hey, Kacchan, I really liked you and Uraraka’s house!” Izuku said, walking up to Bakugo. “Tch, of course, we did a great job. And we’re totally gonna blow your stupid house out of the water.” Izuku only smiled and laughed in response before walking away.
“Attention! The votes have been counted!” Iida shouted out, holding up the basket. “Easy dude, we’re right here,” Jirou complained, holding her hand to her ear. “I apologize,” Iida replied with a softer tone. “In third place, Uraraka and Bakugo!” Cheers went around as Bakugo pouted, sinking further into his seat. Third wasn’t first.
“In second place, Yaoyorozu and Jirou!” Cheers went around again as the two blushed and said their thanks. “And finally, in first place!” The pause held in the air, seeming to last longer than it most likely was. “Sato and Shoji!”
Another round of cheers went around as the two teammates looked at each other proudly, Sato patting Shoji on the back. After they had cleared the area, Bakugo made his way to his room for some much-desired rest. He already hated being around all of them in class, much less on one of his days off.
Finally, getting to his room, Bakugo immediately went for the welcoming embrace of his bed. The exhaustion of the day caught up with him as he fell asleep before he even realized he’d been tired. It wasn’t until a knocking at his door awoke him that he’d known he’d fallen asleep. Looking at his phone, it read 7:43.
Pushing himself off of the bed, he attempted to wipe the sleep from his face. Opening the door, he was met with Uraraka, who held two cups in her hands. “Eh?” Uraraka held up a mug for him. “Hey! They were making hot cocoa, and I figured you might want some. Also, to say thanks for today.” Bakugo took the cup but looked at the girl, confused.
“For today?” he asked, not understanding what she’d meant.
“Yeah!” If it was somehow possible, her smile widened. The feeling in Bakugo’s chest returned, so he quickly took a sip of his drink to distract himself. “I wasn’t feeling that great after messing up the cookies, but then you helped me out. You bought me that candy bar, and we even made a pretty great house together!”
Bakugo looked to the side, “Yeah, but we didn’t even get first.” Uraraka giggled a little bit, before taking another sip of her drink.
“Of course you would say that. I still really liked the house, you’ve got some really good art skills ya know. Just try and look on the bright side.” Bakugo rolled his eyes but gave it a shot regardless. He let out a chuckle as he thought about the day the way she’d described it. She had a way of making it not seem so bad.
“Merry Christmas, Bakugo,” Uraraka said, holding out her mug. Bakugo looked down before clinking his cup with hers. They both took deep sips from their cups, Bakugo looking up as he did so. A small clump of green above Uraraka caught his eye.
“I’m gonna kill those bastards.” Uraraka glanced at the boy in confusion before she followed his gaze and noticed the mistletoe hanging outside of his room. She let out another giggle, drawing Bakugo’s attention. As the two looked at each other, she noticed his expression soften. “You know,” Bakugo said, lowering his mug. “A rules a rule.”
Uraraka blushed as she realized what he meant before noticing that he’d begun to lean in. She quickly lowered her mug before leaning in as well. As he got closer, Bakugo started to take in more of Uraraka’s features.
He noticed the deep brown of her eyes, the natural blush of her cheeks. He felt that familiar, constricting feeling in his chest return, tighter than ever. His heart began beating faster and harder, threatening to burst from his chest. Uraraka’s eyelashes slowly batted as she blinked a few times, before keeping them shut. Deciding to mirror her, Bakugo closed his eyes, letting his instincts guide him as their lips found each other. The kiss was soft at first, as the two slowly got used to the feeling.
Bakugo made the first move, his hand finding its way to the cheeks he’d spent the day admiring. Slowly cupping her face, he pulled her deeper into the kiss, to which she responded by kissing back. They stayed this way until the need for air was remembered. Pulling back, the two took time to catch their breaths.
Bakugo found his heart had finally calmed down, now returned to a relaxed state, yet still pounding as intense as ever. Uraraka stayed with her eyes closed, a smile again on her face before she opened her eyes. “Oh, by the way. I don’t think you’ll need to kill anyone. Unless you want to kill me, that is.” Bakugo looked at her, confused before he looked back at the mistletoe. It was still there, floating peacefully above their heads.
Katsuki Bakugo was someone who liked certainties. He was certain he would be one of UA’s top students. He was certain he’d be the number one hero one day. And he was certain he was falling for Ochaco Uraraka.
“Merry Christmas, Bakugo,” Uraraka said softly. Bakugo looked back down at the girl in front of him, a small smile forming on his face before he leaned down to kiss her again. “Merry Christmas, Angelface.”
