Chapter Text
Steve had you on his mind for a long time, you worked together in the Avengers Tower and you sat outside his office. You were always so kind and competent at your job and fun to be around. Steve would leave his door open so he could glance at you working at your desk. Sometimes on hard days you would just walk by and stop and show him something funny on your phone, or just have a random 5-minute conversation to get your brain off the demanding work you had piling on your desk. You would catch him glancing at you out of the corner of his eye from time to time, but nothing came of it. Nat told him that you were single too.
He always made time for you, you weren’t imposing and made him laugh. He was crushing hard, and was mustering up the courage to ask you out. What he didn’t know, was that you were waiting for him to make the first move. He would’ve done so a few months ago, but the world changed… Again… The world found out there are such things as aliens, and now there were more “superheroes” in your midst. A man who the world dubbed him the name; “Superman” had come into the picture in various ways. This made the work in the office and the work in the field particularly busier than usual, trying to learn more about him. He seemed to be acting alone, helping save lives and stop crime.
Your job wasn’t solely office work, but occasionally you would go out in the field with the Avengers Team to help with your knowledge and expertise. Today in the city, there was a huge fire in a skyscraper. Problem was the fire fighters could only get their ladders up to certain floor until they were out of luck. The Avengers were called in to help.
You looked out the window from the Avengers Tower and you could see the black smoke coming from across the city. You gasped and frowned. You walked to Steve’s office and peered in from behind the doorframe, “You ready to go?”
He nodded, and grabbed his shield and threw it onto his back. As you two were walking down the hall together to meet with Nat and Clint, he turned to you, “Y/N, stay close to me, I don’t want you to get hurt,” a serious expression on his face.
“Well, good thing I’m not a firefighter,” you laughed.
“I’m serious, it’s really dangerous,” he said as both of you waited for the elevator.
You rolled your eyes, “You worry too much.”
He put his hand on your shoulder for the first time and looked you straight in the eyes, “No, I have lost people,” he paused, “People with more combat training than you,” you frowned at him, “Keep close to me, keep your eyes open. Anything can happen.”
“You got that right,” you said as you both got onto the elevator, “Up till a few months ago, we didn’t know if aliens existed… Let alone monsters.”
Nat and Clint met up with both of you at the bottom floor, and together you traveled to the site. Once you got out of the vehicle to assess the situations, police and fire fighters spoke with Steve. You were observing the area and looked up and indeed saw the source of the black smoke, orange flames coming out of the side windows, fire raging on. There were screaming and glass strewn about the ground.
The first responders were doing the best they could, you were their reinforcements. Then something caught your eye while your face was pointed towards the sky. It was coming closer, and it was coming fast. You turned your head and shouted towards Steve about 10 feet away, “Incoming!!!”
He looked up and saw a black dot go into the burning building. You saw it too. “Is it?... Is it…? Who I think it is?” your breathing started to get quaky. Then you heard and saw an explosion on the side of the building, more fire and screaming. Your eyes darted frantically, and then you saw the dot again, only it was coming towards you. Fast!
Then, with a loud thud, right in front of your feet, was a tower of a man with huge muscles in a suit and cape. You were awestruck! He had dark hair, blue eyes, and a chiseled jaw. He was hunched over with a woman in his arms. He looked at you, “Here! Take her, and give her medical assistance.”
Aside from the fact that you thought you just fell in love; you nodded and brought the woman to paramedics. When you came back, there were 10 more people waiting for you, you looked up to see that he was rescuing all of them, one by one, in record time too! He definitely was a person with abilities, to say the least. The Avengers could use someone like this on their team, as you helped the team, you watched him work.
He was such a marvel to watch! He saved all the people inside and then you saw him fly out of the building, turn around in mid-air and saw a blue stretch of, what looked like water or ice, you couldn’t know for sure because he was so high up in the sky, but in the end he put out the fire himself. Your jaw dropped. You couldn’t believe it! It was like nothing you had ever seen before!
Then, in a blink of an eye… He flew away. The black dot was gone, and the fire was put out. You blinked, not believing how fast everything happened. Then you felt a hand on your shoulder, it was Steve, “Y/N,” you turned your head to the right and looked into his eyes, “Are you ok?”
You started to come back to earth, and you smiled widely, “DID YOU SEE THAT?” You were catching your breath as you looked back up at the sky. “He flew up there and saved all those people?”
Steve still had his hand on your shoulder, but it looked like you didn’t notice. This was getting on his nerves and he frowned, “I saw he talked to you,” his voice deep, “What did he say?”
You stared back at him with a smile on your face, “He told me to give these people medical attention,” you sighed in relief, “I think he’s an ally, Steve. We’ve been needing good news like this for a while. At least something to work in our favour.”
He frowned again looking up at the sky and then moved his eyes back to you again, to his annoyance you were still looking at the sky. You sensed his eyes on you, and you turned your face to him, a sheepish smile on your face as you started blushing, Steve was NOT happy. “Capes aren’t practical anyway,” he scoffed as he turned around and started walking away from you.
“What’s his problem?” you thought to yourself.
