Work Text:
She had never been this nervous before.
Wait, maybe she had- when she thought Aizawa-sensei was going to expel her and her entire class from UA.
No, this was definitely worse. She applied extra deodorant in preparation for the excessive sweat that was probably going to come.
"You can do this. There's literally nothing to be worried about," she told her reflection in the mirror. Mirror-Ochako didn't look like she believed those words.
"Well, too bad." Turning off the light she left the bathroom.
"Wait, don't turn that off, I gotta use the pot."
Katsuki slipped behind her, giving a kiss on the cheek. "Also, were you talking to yourself just now?"
"Of course not, you must be hearing things."
She heard him laugh behind the closed door. "Sure, whatever makes you feel better."
Twenty minutes later they were off.
"I still don't know why you need to drive," Katsuki said as he buckled his seatbelt.
"What part of 'surprise' don't you understand? If you drive then I'll have to tell you where we're going."
"I'm going to find out anyway, you know that right?"
"Oh, shut up. I've been planning this date for a month, let me have my fun and surprise you."
He turned his head to pout, but Ochako knew better than to fall for that facade. She didn't know if he remembered, but today was the anniversary of their first date. It was because of this that she wanted to take him out for a special date.
Despite what others (including his mother) might think, being with Katsuki made her happy. He had the attitude of a gremlin, but once you get past that he was actually one of the kindest people she knew. He always made sure she was taken care of- from getting the bathtub ready after a long day of hero work to letting her paint his nails for practice. He was always there for her.
That's why she planned this whole day for him. A day that he could relax and know how much she appreciated everything he did for her.
The only problem was finding a day that both of them didn't have work at their agencies. But through a series of miracles and favors, they were both able to get the entire weekend off.
"Are we getting close? I'm fucking starving."
"Well you're in luck, because we're less than ten minutes away."
Soon they were pulling into the parking lot of a small restaurant.
"What's this? I didn't know there was a restaurant out here."
"There wasn't, up until a few months ago. It's new, and it claims to have the spiciest ramen in all of Japan."
Katsuki turned to face her, forgetting he was supposed to be pouting. "The spiciest ramen? In all of Japan? Yeah, right."
"If you don't want to risk it then we can go somewhere else…" Ochako put the car in reverse, ready to pull back out of their parking spot.
"Don't want to risk…? Don't kid yourself, we're going in."
He was out of the car and walking over to open Ochako's door before she had even taken the keys out of the ignition.
-----
"Are you happy now?"
Katsuki stretched his hands behind his head and blew out a breath of air.
"That was fucking delicious."
"Do you think it was the spiciest ramen in all of Japan?"
He looked at the three empty bowls in front of them, two belonging to himself.
"You know, Cheeks, it just might be."
"I'm glad you liked it." She put some money on the counter. "You ready to go?"
"Ready to go where? You mean there's more after this?"
"Of course! You really thought getting lunch would be all we're going to do today?"
"Shit, Cheeks, I could do anything with you and it would be the perfect day."
She laughed and they got up to leave.
"So where are we going?"
"Again, Katsuki, it's a surprise."
They got back on the road and drove for another half our, out into the countryside. The nerves were starting to build in Ochako's stomach again, making her glad for that extra round of deodorant. She noticed her fingers were tapping and stopped immediately. She didn't want Katsuki to ask why she was acting so jumpy.
She pulled off onto a dirt road and continued driving.
"Damn, we really are driving out into the country," Katsuki mused. "You sure you aren't driving all this way to kill me and dump my body in a ditch?"
"No, but that's also a good idea."
He chuckled and playfully punched her shoulder. "You crack me up, Cheeks, you know that?"
"Of course I do, that's what girlfriends are for."
------
"How did you know I liked hiking?"
"Your dad told me. You know I'm friends with both of them on social media."
They started their hike up a mountain (that was more like a large hill, according to Katsuki). Ochako made the backpacks she brought float on their backs, making the trip easier.
Eventually they get to the top, right as the sun was beginning to set over the valley. Ochako was grateful that she could blame her breathlessness on the hike. Why was she so nervous? She had been planning this day for several months, but if was all she could do to stop herself from bouncing her leg to get out the jitters.
Katsuki threw down a blanket on the ground for them to sit on then pulled out the other blanket to wrap around their shoulders. She laid her head on his shoulder after they made themselves comfortable. Looking up, she saw his red eyes looking out towards the sun. He would never accept it if she told him, but he really was a beautiful person, especially when he wasn't wearing a scowl. She was happy to see he wasn't wearing one now.
"You know, Katsuki, today is the one year anniversary of when you asked me out on our first date."
"Is that why you planned this surprise date?"
"That's part of the reason. The main reason I planned all this was so I could thank you."
"Thank me? For what?"
"For everything. For all that you've done for me, for you." Her heart was beating fast now. Could he feel it? If he could he wasn't saying anything. He laid his head on hers in response.
"And that's why..." she continued, "and that's why I want to marry you." She pulled away from him, turning her body so they were facing each other.
"But will you marry me, Katsuki?"
She held her breath. How much time had passed? Two seconds? Two hours? She didn't know.
Finally, he broke the silence.
"You know, Cheeks, I was thinking the exact same thing."
Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a ring. "It would make me the happiest man on Earth if you became my wife and I became your husband."
He took Ochako's hand and slid on the ring. Ochako couldn't starting to cry, but the tears were falling freely on her lap. Her heart was still pounding, but this time it wasn't because of nerves. She fell forward, hugging her now fiancé.
"I love you, Katsuki Bakugou."
"And I love you."
