Work Text:
It was an unusually warm and sunny early spring day and life was perfect.
Wei Wuxian has managed to convince Lan Wangji to abandon his desk and its endless paperwork for the day and they had packed a basket in the kitchens and set off to the rabbit meadow. It was in full bloom, colourful flowers as far as the eye could see
By now the rabbits had gotten used to Wei Wuxian, so as soon as the two had sat down they flocked to them, wanting to be petted and fed treats.
Earlier in the afternoon Sizhui and Jingyi had joined them for a while and they had sat together playing music. Now the two boys had left, off to do their homework and it was just the two of them again (and the rabbits).
Wei Wuxian was sprawled over his husband’s lap and gently toying with strands of his long hair. Wei Wuxian loved Lan Wangji’s hair, it was soft and thick and so so lovely. wrapping it around his hand and absentmindedly tugging at it ever so often, he had an idea.
“Lan Zhan, may a do your hair?” he asked.
“Mn, anything Wei Ying wants.”
Lan Wanji had forgone putting his hair up into the complicated hairstyles he usually wore so Wei Ying simply untied his forehead ribbon, carded his fingers through his husbands hair before pulling a comb out of his robes and brushing out the long tresses. Lan Wangji’s hair wasn’t particularly tangled but Wei Wuxian still spend a long while just running the comb through it and humming softly.
Once he deemed Lan Wangji’s hair sufficiently silky his gaze fell onto the blooming meadow and he had another idea.
“Wait here a second, alright? And don’t move!” he said and sprang to his feet, knowing his husband would gladly follow his request even before seeing his answering nod.
Wei Wuxian started picking flowers, carefully selecting only the most beautiful blossoms, nothing less than perfection would do for Lan Wangji. Once had a lapful of flowers he stood up again, lifting the skirt if his robes to make a makeshift basket and settled down behind his husband once again. True to his word Lan Wangji had not moved (with the exception of petting the rabbits clambering all over his lap) and his hair still fell down his back perfectly smooth
He divided Lan Wangji’s hair into multiple sections, braiding each before braiding them together to create one intricate braid, all the while weaving in the daisies, and crocuses, and snow drops, and forget-me-nots he had picked earlier.
At his husband’s questioning noise he just shushed him: “Trust me Lan Zhan. I know what I’m doing, Shijie always said I had a wonderful talent for this.”
The mention of Jiang Yanli still hurt, but here, in this quiet and peaceful moment it was more of a gentle ache rather than the stab of pain thoughts of her usually came with.
When he was finished he draped the braid over Lan Wangji’s shoulder so he could admire Wei Wuxian’s handiwork as well. It looked quite beautiful, multiple delicate braids woven together into one intricate plait and the white and blue flowers speckling the braid, set off against the black of his husband’s hair.
“It’s beautiful Wei Ying” he said softly and reached for Wei Wuxian’s hand to brush soft kisses over those gentle, talented fingers.
An oh, this, this was his favourite Lan Zhan; soft and content, happy and smiling, and dressed in his simplest robes. Not that he didn’t love his husband’s elaborate and elegant robes he mostly wore, but a Lan Wanji without all the trappings of His Excellency, Hanguang Jun, Chief Cultivator was a rare sight, reserved for only those closest to him, how could that not be his favourite?
Wei Wuxian committed the sight to his memory, promising himself to paint this later, Lan Wangji with flowers in his hair, bunnies in his lap, with his gentle smile and his eyes shining brighter than the sun with love and happiness, looking utterly at peace.
It was an unusually warm and sunny early spring day and life was perfect.
