When Kannonzaka Doppo was offered a job that promised greater benefits and a better working environment, he didn’t think twice about accepting it. He immediately grabbed the opportunity to get away from his terrible boss and the demanding workload of his old company.
He was so eager to leave his current job, he didn’t bother reading the requirements and responsibilities attached to his new position.
Then again, it may be for his own good – after all, Doppo’s new job wasn’t anything like his old one. It was a high-paying job that came with high consequences.
Besides, even if he did read the document detailing what his new jobs would be, there was no way Doppo would expect meeting up with a talking fox on his first day at work.
“Nice to meet you,” the while and orange ball of fluff spoke casually, as if a talking fox was the most normal thing in the world. “Are you the new Saniwa?”
“H-huh?” Doppo stared blankly at the creature. For a moment, he thought about running away from this strange meeting, but he realized he had no former job to return to.
“My name is Konnosuke,” the fox introduced himself. “I’m tasked with guiding the new Saniwa throughout their job, which is to protect history.”
Every second of the meeting felt stranger to Doppo, despite him being born in an era where women have taken over the government and territorial wars were settled by rap battles using the weapon named Hypnosis Mic. “Am I going to be a museum curator? I wasn’t informed of this – I don’t think I’m qualified -”
Konnosuke’s face formed what Doppo discerned was a cute smile. “Don’t worry, we’ve fully looked into your bio earlier and found you more than qualified for this job, Saniwa-sama. If anything, only you can do this work – at least in this generation...”
Doppo was now worried. Here he was, sitting in a vast traditional Japanese style room on his own, facing a talking fox which was offering him a job that was specifically meant for him. “I-is it really a high-paying job with great benefits?”
“Of course!” Konnosuke smiled once again. “Aside from the salary and usual benefits, you will be provided accommodation free of rent, as well as monthly allowance. Annual salary bonus and rewards will also be provided.”
Normally, people wouldn’t easily believe what a talking fox would say, but Doppo couldn’t help but breath a sigh of relief. “I’m fine without the free accommodation, to be honest. Besides, my roommate is - “
“We’ve taken Izanami Hifumi-sama into consideration as well. Rest assured he can move into the Citadel with Saniwa-sama.”
“Eh?”
“My task is to guide the Saniwa and keep them as comfortable as possible throughout their life. So I shouldn’t keep you away from your precious person.”
“Y-you don’t have to put it that way...” Doppo’s cheeks went bright pink as he shyly glanced away. “But thanks...”
“Great! Shall we begin?” Konnosuke tap his paw onto the floor, and a bright light slowly emanated from underneath.
Doppo jumped as a vast holographic screen emerged on the tatami floor. It revealed an image of what appeared to be a map of Japan.
“The Saniwa is blessed with powers which will help protect the world from the Time Retrograde Army,” Konnosuke explained. “They are aided by the Touken Danshi, tsukumogami who manifested through the will and power of ancient swords.
“You, Saniwa-sama, will awaken the Touken Danshi so they can be sent to battle Time Retrograde Army. They were sent back in the past by history revisionists who wanted to change the future – our present.”
Doppo could not understand what the fox was saying, but he could tell he was about to be handed some great responsibilities. The holographic screen then showed a video of what appeared to be the scene of an ancient drama – two armies in during the Warring States Period in the midst of heated battle. Not far from them was a smaller army which appeared oddly different from the two factions.
They looked huge, Doppo thought, and rather inhuman. He also noticed the odd group of warriors were armed and looked set on joining the battle.
“The Time Retrograde Army will do everything it takes to change the course of history – alter the course of battle, assassinate an important historical figure, anything,” Konnosuke warned. “This is why your job as a Saniwa is very important.”
Doppo stared at the fox worryingly. He was curious despite himself. “What should I do then?”
Konnosuke answered cheerfully. “Shall we start with your first sword then?”
