“You are blessed by the faeries.” Steve’s mother said it every night when she tucked him in to bed. “They watch over you, and love you, just as I do.”
Steve believed her, but he often questioned her words. Every season he fell ill, staying sickly and small even as the other children grew bigger and stronger, and they started to question him as well.
However, Steve had proof that he was not like the other children around him. Every spring since he was a baby he sprouted a tender crown of flowers from his scalp, that bloomed and re-bloomed until fall came, when they withered and fell out as the first icy wind blew across the land.
