Work Text:
Kazusa stood in front of Izumi's door, her feet wriggling in her shoes and her heart refusing to stay calm. She did what the girls in the literary club at school suggested, to just put it on her lips and it would be a done deal.
She heard his voice from inside and heard his feet shuffle down the stairs. Letting her nerves take over, she rubbed her lips together and - Oh, no! Did she just ruin her look?
Terrified at the thought, Kazusa cursed at herself for not carrying a pocket mirror - she could just run home next door to fix it-
The door opened before Kazusa turned her foot. With a high-pitched nervous laugh, she greeted a confused Izumi, "Hello!"
"Come on in," Izumi said, smiling back. He held the door wide for Kazusa to walk in, and he watched her the whole time.
Was he just being polite to not say something was wrong? Or did he not notice at all? As he closed the door behind them, flashing his friendly grin, Kazusa could no longer take her anxiety.
"So, Izumi! See anything different?"
"Huh?" Izumi seemed to be caught by surprise. "Um…"
Maybe if she stood closer to him, he'd see it. As she stepped closer, she watched his eyes study her, starting from her typical bowl-cut hairstyle, then to the top of her school uniform, which she noticed his eyes linger on her chest for some reason.
"It's not that!" she blurted out, and she felt her cheeks redden, just as his did in his own fluster.
"Ah! I'm sorry!" Izumi shouted, embarrassment written all over his face.
"Do you really not notice it?" She lifted her foot to get even closer, although her other foot suddenly slid underneath.
"Kazusa!"
She closed her eyes as she fell, though landing on the wooden floor wasn't as hard as she thought. How humiliating! The girls said to wear it confidently, let it tantalize him along with her womanly ways!
Tripping over herself was far from tantalizing. Izumi hadn't a clue what was different about her either, but what did it matter? She had been doing it all wrong.
"Kazusa..."
Kazusa opened her eyes and realized that Izumi had broken her fall. He had fallen onto his back, holding her in his arms, and his eyes were locked onto hers.
And then, his eyes lowered down to her lips.
He looked back up to her eyes, suddenly in a daze. Did he notice? He must have, since he was leaning closer to her, and - wait, was she moving closer, too? She wondered if her heart was pounding hard against her chest, but she wanted this to finally happen.
When their lips touched, she realized as she lay against his chest, that it was also his heart that she felt beating just as quickly.
Kazusa never imagined that her first kiss would feel this magical.
They parted and she gazed into his eyes, feeling like she just woke up from a dream.
“I guess you figured it out, huh?” Kazusa asked Izumi with a smile.
“Figured what out? I’m confused.”
“Never mind.” Kazusa giggled at his clueless expression and moved to kiss him again. It didn’t go as she planned, but she was convinced that wearing the red lipgloss on her lips worked as the girls said it would.
