Work Text:
Miles Edgeworth looks at the way that Phoenix Wright stands in front of him: defensive, angry, lashing out, just the way he used to be before Phoenix came into his life.
He doesn’t like seeing Phoenix like this.
"You really are this stubborn, aren't you?"
"I'm not being stubborn," Phoenix hisses. He sits down, pointedly looking at everything else except Miles. "I don't have a problem. I don't know what you mean."
Miles rolls his eyes. "And I'm not Miles Edgeworth."
Phoenix spits out, “Oh, fuck you, Miles.”
"Why are you so childish?"
"Why are you pushing this onto me?!" Phoenix screams, standing up and pointing his finger at Miles as if he's objecting in court. "Leave me alone. Leave me fucking alone, Miles. Maybe I do eat. Maybe I don't. What's it to you?!"
"Because I care about you!"
"You don't care about me, stop fucking lying-"
"I love you, Phoenix Wright!"
-
Miles wakes up in bed.
"Fuck."
-
Trucy smiles at her dad. "Daddy, you're being silly. We don't need this much money."
"Yes, you do," Phoenix pushes her hand back. "Don't worry about it. Treat yourselves."
"And you're not joining us, Wright?" Miles frowns. "I don't think I've seen you eat yet. You must be feeling at least somewhat hungry."
Phoenix laughs a little, but in a way that looks slightly trained, as if he's been practicing how this looks in the mirror. "I'm not hungry. Don't worry about me."
His stomach growls, betraying him. Phoenix grimaces.
Miles hums softly. "I think that evidence contradicts your testimony."
Phoenix rolls his eyes. "And I thought I was bad with the court puns."
"Come on, Daddy," Trucy pulls at Phoenix's hand, and he relents, for once. "Let's go and celebrate! And we can eat lots of yummy food!!"
"Alright, Trucy... Alright."
-
Miles Edgeworth looks at that smile, pushing away the concerns of other people, and thinks it's worse than dream-Phoenix who lashed out at his loved ones.
It's way worse.
