Work Text:
Someone is knocking on Todoroki’s door, which wakes him up and sends him fumbling for his lamp. He looks at the clock: 11:45pm. He can hear party sounds all the way from his room. When he blearily opens the door, he’s greeted by a smiling Midoriya, holding two champagne flutes. His smile falters a second later. “Oh, sorry, were you asleep?”
Todoroki yawns. “A little. How’s the party?” He retreats back to his room, a silent invitation for Midoriya to follow him in.
They sit on the tatami cross-legged, facing each other. “It’s okay. Not as fun without you,” Midoriya pouts.
“I’m sure that’s not true.”
“They’ve started karaoke. Kaminari’s rapping Eminem.”
Todoroki chuckles. “I didn’t think his English was that good.”
Midoriya grimaces. “It’s not. But since someone’s a boring old man and sleeps at nine on New Year’s Eve, I thought I’d bring New Year’s to you.” He holds up the flutes, smiling slightly.
Todoroki takes one and swishes it around, watching the gold liquid dance. “This would be my first sip.”
“You’ve never tried champagne before?”
“I haven’t tried any alcohol before.”
Midoriya’s eyes widen, but then he exhales and smiles. “I’m relieved. I haven’t either.”
Todoroki’s mildly surprised. He’s around other seventeen-year-olds enough to know that abstaining from alcohol was uncommon. Especially in a building full of students without parental supervision. “Ringing in 2022 with new experiences?”
“I guess you could say that.” He looks at his bedside clock and Todoroki follows his gaze. Nine minutes to midnight.
“How youthful of you.”
Midoriya looks back at him. “We don’t have to do the champagne. To be honest, I just wanted to come up here to you.”
Todoroki’s cheeks warm. He puts down his glass. “What about new experiences?”
Midoriya does the same, and scoots closer to him. “I can think of better ones.”
“Can you?”
“Yeah.” He looks down, bashful. “If you want.”
Todoroki’s face flushes. “I want.”
He leans in and they kiss.
It’s soft and light. Todoroki lets his hands tangle in Midoriya’s hair. He feels hands cupping his cheeks. When they pull away, they smile at each other. The clock catches Todoroki’s eye, and he can’t help but laugh.
“What?”
“It’s eleven fifty-six. We kissed early.”
Midoriya laughs. “We did it wrong.” He looks back at him. “It’s okay. No one will know we were a few minutes off.”
“Definitely.” Todoroki lets himself smile again. “No harm in a do-over.”
“Do-overs are my middle name.”
And so they kiss again at midnight. And again after that. And again after that.
They don’t end up drinking champagne, but it’s okay. They’ve got time.
