Bakugou Confesses [KiriBaku]

Summary:

Sometimes the real thing is right under your nose.
A.K.A. Bakugou exposes his heart a little bit.

Work Text:

The stars glowed softly above them.

Kirishima turned to Bakugou with a familiar expression of comfort. “You were right about it being a good night for this,” he said.

“Of course I’m right,” Bakugou replied, though the usual menace was absent from his words. “Ei…thanks for coming with me.”

Kirishima shook his head, smiling. “I needed a break from the rest of them. Once Denki and them ripped open the marshmallow bag and the sugar hit…”

His pinkie finger brushed Bakugou’s without fear. He did not move away.

“I knew it would be you, you know.”

Kirishima turned in surprise at the unexpected tone.

"Me? Bro--”

“You know what I mean. It’s them and us, you and me, we--we understand things, we have a sort of...world together. Don’t make me spell it out like a softie.”

Katsuki’s gaze never left the sky, though by the distant campfire light, Kirishima saw his face was flushed with honesty.

“Why wait so long to say something?” The redhead asked instead. He became aware of his heartbeat, that its rhythm somehow felt connected to the pace of their breaths, the spin of the earth, the constellations above…

“Maybe...maybe your shitty hair-heart finally rubbed off on me. Maybe life got to me and I realized how fucking fast it goes.”

There was a pause.

And then Katsuki turned and looked him in the eyes. His were dark pools, lit only by the shimmering reflections of nighttime.

“I knew it would be you,” he whispered.

Kirishima opened his mouth, unable to put words in it. Words about how he had spent years at his best friend’s side, watching and cheering him on as he dated other people, climbed to the top 1% of student body talent, finally confronted his parents for their painfully conditional love…. It all caught in his throat and he just stared back in silence.

He didn’t need to say anything, though.

Lying here under the sky was enough. Side by side, they could take on the world.
