Work Text:

As Izuku’s pregnancy progressed, Shouto started to change. It was more than worrying and the young omega knew that he had to bring it up sooner or later. Luckily, the possibility of his mate not wanting a child could be left out. He had never seen the boy that happy when he told him he was expecting his child.

Of course, his behavior towards Izuku stayed the same. He was still that loving, sometimes awkward alpha the boy met in U.A. However, as time went by, his scent changed. It became more and more bothered and by the time Izuku reached his sixth month, he had to realize that his mate couldn’t solve this situation on his own.

That is why he had Momo sitting on his couch with a cup of tea in hand. The girl looked at him with anticipation, but she knew better than to rush him. She was aware of that causing unnecessary bad feelings to pregnant omegas never ended well – neither to the person who did it, nor to the omega.

”Something is wrong with Shouto,” Izuku finally spoke up, playing with the ham of his shirt.

”What do you mean, Izuku-san?” Momo asked, patting the sofa beside her encouragingly. Izuku sat down, facing her, then spoke up again.

”His scent has been changing continuously. It means that something bothers him, I just don’t know what.” The boy’s voice had desperate undertone and the scent of distress started to fill the room. Momo tapped her chin, then her face brightened up with realization. Izuku leaned forward to that.

”Have you ever considered him having insecurities because of what had happened to him in the past?” After becoming best friends, the current Number One shared his past with Momo. He got a tight hug and a cup of green tea after it.

”Oh my god…” Izuku breathed out, feeling the dumbest person alive. ”I should’ve thought about that!”

”Don’t worry, Izuku-san,” Momo said, patting his shoulder with a smile. ”While pregnant, omegas mostly concentrate on the small life growing inside them. Being forgetful is not something uncommon for them during those nine months.”

”I had no idea that you had a pregnant mate, Momo-san!” Izuku said with a bright smile.

”I don’t” the girl said, shaking her head lightly, ”I’ve only read a lot about secondary genders.”

When Shouto arrived back home after a tiring day of hero work, he found his mate sleeping on their couch. He felt the faint scent of his best friend in the flat and noted that he had to thank her for looking after his omega when he couldn’t. From the way Izuku was tucked in, he could tell it was Momo’s handiwork. It made him smile.

His gaze slowly wondered to the big bump under the soft blanket. He reached his hand out as if he wanted to touch it, but pulled it back immediately with a dark frown. Nothing good would come out of that…

”Shoucchan?” He heard Izuku’s drowsy voice and when he looked back at him, he saw a sleepy, but bright smile on his face. The omega grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him down in a kiss. ”Welcome home!” He said after they’d parted. He felt a small kick and giggled. ”The baby is happy too.” Shouto turned his head away, prying Izuku’s hand off of him – even thought it was extremely hard for him emotionally.

”Do you need something from the kitchen?” He asked and was about to leave when Izuku spoke up.

”Shouto!” It made him stop in a halt. His husband hadn’t called him that since their wedding day. ”Come here,” he asked, outstretching his hand. Shouto slowly slid his hand into the smaller one, letting his husband pull him on the couch.

”What can I do for you?” Shouto asked, feeling a huge lump in his throat. Izuku squeezed his hand, trying to help him calm down as much as possible.

”Firstly, I’m so sorry for being so insensitive that I couldn’t put my finger on what was bothering you,” he said on a remorseful voice, but not long after a smile appeared on his face, ”but believe me when I say, you have nothing to worry about!”

”W-what do you mean?” Shouto asked, trying to form words despite the lump in his throat.

”You know, omegas have a special connection with their pups while they are in their womb. It is like we can tell if they feel uncomfortable in another person’s presence who is with the omega,” Izuku explained calmly, still smiling. ”You see, our pup has never felt happier than when you are beside me.”

Shouto had to take a deep breath, but his eyes still stung. Izuku lifted the comforters off of himself and placed Shouto’s hand on his stomach. Hardly had his hand touched it, Shouto felt a kick right beneath his palm. He felt his lips quirking into a slight smile. Maybe he wouldn’t be such a bad father after all.
