Work Text:
A drop of water landed on his nose, startling him.
Surprised, Izuku glanced up at the sky. When he left the house this morning it was bright and sunny outside, but lost in his thoughts, he failed to notice when the clouds darkened.
As if waiting for him to look up, the rain went from lightly sprinkling to a straight downpour. He sighed. His blazer was starting to cling to him already, and he could tell his hair was going to frizz up as soon as he got to school. The one day he doesn’t check the weather forecast is the one day he needs to. Izuku just hoped Aizawa-sensei would let him take a moment to go to the bathroom and dry off.
He stopped for a moment and peeled his hair away from his forehead- he could already tell it was getting tangled.
A shadow fell over him, and the rain stopped reaching him. Confused, Izuku glanced up at- an umbrella?
He followed the hand, eyes coming to rest on Iida.
"Hello Midoriya-kun! Did you forget your umbrella?" Iida was standing there, a half smile on his face, holding his umbrella over Izuku's head. Izuku let out a huff, shaking his head.
"I forgot to check the weather today. I don't usually carry my umbrella around." Izuku laughed sheepishly, hand rubbing the back of his neck.
"Make sure to remember next time, it wouldn't do to have you miss class because you got sick!" Iida chopped his hand to emphasize his point. Izuku smiled at the movement, his face smoothing into a fond smile. The hand gestures were so distinctly Iida it made something in his chest warm.
Iida checked his watch, back straightening a bit. "Oh! We really must get going if we want to be on time. Sensei will be disappointed if we're late." Izuku startled; he'd forgotten about school for a second.
They had gotten ready to continue on to school when Izuku noticed something.
Iida wasn't under the umbrella, instead holding his book bag above his head in a vain attempt to keep the rain from soaking him.
"Iida-kun, why aren't you under the umbrella? You're going to get soaked." Izuku asked, twisting his hands in worry.
He startled, glancing at Izuku then averting his eyes, cheeks flushing. "Ah- there isn't enough room for both of us. I wouldn't want to crowd you."
"Nonsense! I don't mind, and it's your umbrella- I couldn't take it all to myself." He grabbed Iida, pulling him flush against Izuku and locking their arms. When Izuku looked up at him, he was red up to his ears, flush creeping up his neck.
"Are you feeling alright? You're looking kinda red." Was he coming down with something? Izuku hoped not, he would feel awful if Iida got sick from helping him.
"A-ah, yes! I'm feeling fine, no need to worry." Iida's blush deepened, continuing under his collar. Izuku was skeptical, but let it go.
They kept walking, a comfortable silence blanketing them with the rain as background noise. Iida was warm, and Izuku- soaked as he is- was gladly taking advantage of that. He may have felt a bit bad about clinging to Iida while wet, but he didn't seem to mind the contact. After a few minutes of standing straight and tense, Iida even leaned into his side. That made Izuku go red for some reason, the warm feeling from before creeping back through his chest like a weed.
After a few minutes the school was visible from a distance, looming and still a bit awe inspiring even after so long.
"We should hurry inside, Aizawa-sensei will be angry if we're late." Izuku said. Iida nodded vigorously, speeding up and subsequently dragging a stumbling Izuku along with him.
Scanning their student ID's at the gate, the pair hurried to the main building, puddles splashing their shoes and soaking through.
Arriving at the main entrance, he darted out from under the umbrella's protection. The rain pelted him for a quick moment before he reached the main entrance and speed walked inside, holding the door open for Iida, who was shaking out the umbrella.
Finished, Iida jogged inside and slowed to a halt. "We should hurry to class, but you should dry off first. Coming to class soaking wet doesn't give a good impression, after all!"
He held back the urge to point out that there's no one he needed to impress- today is just a training exercise, no one special is coming- and instead nodded, turning away to head to the bathroom.
He stopped in his tracks, turning to look at Iida.
"Thanks for sharing your umbrella with me! It was nice." Izuku shot a beaming smile at him, eyes scrunched, then hurried off to find the nearest restroom.
He just managed to catch Iida go red up to his ears and cover his face with his hands as he turned away.
I wonder what that was about?
Shrugging of his blazer, he shook his head. Iida was probably just embarrassed about cutting it close arriving to class.
He still felt the phantom warmth of Iida pressed against his arm.
Izuku shook his head, droplets of water flying from his curls. He really should get his thoughts under control- zoning out won't do him well in the field. He hurried on to class, footsteps quick and light as he tried not to arrive on time.
It wouldn't do if he was late just because his mind was wandering.
