Chapter Text
Guren tiredly sighed, his chin resting on the back of his hand as his violet eyes drifted to the scenery outside the window. He never really paid that much attention to the lessons but despite of that, he still would get good grades which was a surprise and shock to his friends mostly Goshi who would always jokingly express his frustrations of studying and getting average grades towards the raven-haired boy because of the fact that Guren hardly studied and still managed to achieve top grades.
“Guren!”
“Gur~en!”
Snapping out of his thoughts, Guren flickered his gaze onto his blonde-haired best friend Shinya who was currently staring at him with a curious smile.
Sometimes, Guren would get lost staring at Shinya’s beauty. Not like he did it on purpose. It was just hard to resist Shinya.
“What?” Guren scowled, narrowing his eyes at the blue-eyed boy.
“Can I come to your house after school?” Shinya asked, his facial expression slightly darkening as he dropped his gaze onto his desk, his fists clenched on his lap. “I don’t really want to go home.”
Guren worriedly eyed Shinya for a moment. “Did something happen?”
Shinya froze, his body visibly tensing causing Guren to realise that something was wrong with Shinya and that he was hiding something.
“Shinya?”
“It’s..nothing. I just don’t wanna deal with my family today,” Shinya finally answered with a stiff smile, his voice forced.
Guren raised an eyebrow at Shinya before dropping the subject and sighing. “Okay but,” he averted his gaze, trying not to act too affectionately, “if you ever want to tell me anything..I’m here for you.”
Guren had expected Shinya to reply with his typical snarky and annoying comments but instead he was met with silence causing Guren to slowly turn his gaze back onto Shinya not expecting to immediately catch his pretty blue eyes already staring at him with so much softness.
“Thank you Guren,” Shinya quietly said, sweetly smiling before focusing his attention back onto the teacher who’s mindlessly droning on with half the class hardly listening.
Guren’s gaze lingered on Shinya until he found himself going back to also focus on the teacher.
He knew there was something going on with Shinya and he was going to get to the bottom of it. He couldn’t just stand by and watch his best friend handle whatever he was dealing with by himself. Shinya was special to him. Out of everyone in the group which consisted of Goshi, Mito, Sayuri, Shigure, himself and Shinya; he was the closest to Shinya and he knew it was likewise with Shinya.
Mito and Shinya were the only ones out of the group that he shared a class with which he was at least thankful for. He wouldn't have been able to handle the loneliness of being by himself in a class full of people he didn't hang out with or talked to.
The school day was finally over as everyone started to make their way home. Guren was walking home with his group of friends. Luckily, they all lived close to each other so they were able to always walk home and go to school together. Even though Guren wasn’t as cheery and talkative as his friends, he still managed to maintain a close bond with all five of them.
“I’m dying to eat your glorious curry Sayuri,” Mito whined, clinging onto Sayuri’s arm. “I haven’t tasted it in a while.”
“Same with me too,” Goshi cut in, walking beside Mito and Shigure with his hands behind his head. “You’re the only one who can actually cook in this group,” he dropped his hands by his side before leaning into whisper to Shigure and Sayuri with his hand cupping the side of his face, “have you tasted Mito’s cooking?”
Unfortunately for Goshi, Mito had heard loud and clear, a scowl on her face as she wacked him on the back of his head causing him to yelp in pain and rub the back of his head. Sayuri, Shigure, Shinya and Guren burst into laughter watching Mito and Goshi’s antics.
Guren and Shinya were walking behind the four. It was weirdly quiet between them. Usually, Shinya would be babbling on about the latest manga or book he’s read or something Mahiru’s done to piss him off.
He still felt awkward whenever he went over to Shinya’s house or came across Mahiru by chance, they used to go out when they were little and in middle school before Mahiru moved schools when they reached high schools. They had gotten into a big argument and since that day they both avoided each other like the plague. Shinya was aware of it and tried to do his best not to ever bring up Mahiru but it was hard when she would do or say somethings to annoy him. Guren didn’t mind but he’d rather not ever have to hear her name again.
Guren stared at Shinya in the corner of his eyes. He was biting his lip and gazing at the floor. “Are you okay, Shinya?”
Shinya slightly jolted, snapping out of his daydream as he looked up to see Guren intensely staring at him. He immediately felt a blush creep onto his cheeks at the way the raven-haired boy was staring at him. He’s so used to Guren that he forgot how stupidly handsome and good looking he was.
“I’m fine..just tired,” Shinya nervously coughed, averting his gaze.
Guren hesitated, his hands in his trousers in his pockets fisted. “I feel like there’s something you’re not telling me and I can tell it’s bothering you.”
Shinya chewed on his bottom lip, avoiding Guren’s questioning eyes. “Like I said, I’m fine. There’s nothing-”
“You’re lying,” Guren casually said causing Shinya to quickly turn his head to face Guren with wide eyes.
“W-what?”
Guren’s bluntness often irritated him despite being close with him and being used to it, sometimes the things that he said just made Shinya want to throttle him but of course Shinya was so in love with Guren he couldn’t ever hurt him.
“Don’t call me a liar Guren,” Shinya gritted, annoyed.
Guren rolled his eyes. “I didn’t. I said you were lying. There’s a difference, you idiot.”
“Big difference,” Shinya rudely snapped back causing Guren to scowl at him and everyone else to turn to stare at the arguing pair.
“Fucking whatever,” Guren snorted, speeding up his pace and walking past the others so that he was at the front.
“Guren,” Sayuri worriedly called out but was ignored.
The others slowed their pace to match Shinya’s who was guiltily avoiding their gazes. He was the reason why their fun and cheerful mood was ruined. He was the reason why Guren was mad at him when he clearly knew that the raven-haired boy was trying to help him as what a friend would do.
“What happened?” Mito softly asked, placing a hand on Shinya’s shoulders.
“It was my fault. I pissed him off by being rude to him when he was just worried about me,” Shinya sheepishly explained, Mito’s hand on his shoulder comforting him.
Sayuri and Shigure exchanged curious glances before turning back to Shinya.
“Why would he be worried?” Shigure asked.
Shit. How was he going to explain this? He didn’t want even more of his friends to worry about him. He didn’t want to be a burden. If he told them, Guren would end up finding out eventually.
“Me and Mahiru got into an argument,” Shinya lied, grimacing at his friends stiffen at the mention of Mahiru. She wasn’t the most loved person in this town to say the least.
Goshi sighed, rubbing his nape. “I’m sure Guren will cool down whilst we’re at his house.”
“Yeah just give him time,” Sayuri firmly nodded, sweetly smiling at Shinya who relaxed.
Let’s just hope that he and Guren would be on speaking terms again.
