Chapter 1: Leap of Faith

Chapter Text

One night he sits in his office with a rosary in hand. It was long past midnight, 2 or 3 in the morning perhaps. His mind was all over the place. It had been such a long day, the little boy he’s been treating seemed to have worsened so Jeong-Won made several drastic decisions.

By his side the entire night was one Dr Jang Gyeo-ul who assisted him tirelessly, with no complaints, no huffs and puffs and quips of exhaustion. She, who once was as cold as her name, now was becoming a warmer doctor by the day. She speaks to families and is able to ease their mind now.

He thought about her and thought about how he was once cold to her, too. But she learned. And he watched her grow. As she grew better, he grew warmer and as the warmth crept inside him, his affections for her grew too. So much so, that he began questioning his choices.

“I don’t know if I’m making the right choice,”

Gyeo-ul was quiet but then he hears her sigh and feels a light poke on his arm, so he turns to her and sees an encouraging smile, “You took a leap of faith, now you just have to believe in it,”

He pondered on Gyeo-ul’s words. Leap of faith. She may have been referring to the patient but it wasn’t the patient he was too worried about at the moment. If he were to summarise his feelings, that was exactly what it is. A leap of faith. God may be laughing at him but He was also watching over him and making sure his decisions were right. He has been questioning his moves and decisions, perhaps for far longer than he wanted to admit. Maybe it wasn’t his calling to serve God as a priest but instead as a doctor - arguably a noble profession. Perhaps God had wanted him to serve the people more, to heal the sick and give people hope, to make the people have faith because at the end of the day most people go ‘Thank God!’ upon hearing good news anyway.

Perhaps He had wanted him to stay by his mother’s side because if he leaves, his mother would not have anyone else. Perhaps He wants him to have the freedom to fall in love with that doctor with wistful eyes.

His decision was made when he realized his calling had and always will be a healer of the people. But Jang Gyeo-ul was the catalyst of it all.

“Dear God, if I’m making the right decision, please give me a sign,”

He heard a knock on his door so he called for whoever it was to enter. It was her. The subject of his indecisiveness.

“Professor, I know you haven’t eaten so I brought you some snacks,” she placed some biscuit packets and something hot to drink.

“Please don’t worry about Minjun, I will take care of him tonight, you should get some rest” she cracked a smile at him but he saw her exhaustion. She disappeared as quickly as she came so he was left with the snacks on the table.

As if emergency patients weren’t enough for her, she found a will to take care of him.

Was this it? Was this his sign to take that leap of faith?
