“Remind me, why do I have to be here?” Asked Jimin, doing his best to avoid making contact with the people around him.
“Because Jungkook asked for us to be here with him today,” answered Taehyung, not even looking away from the map he was holding.
Jimin scoffed. “And why isn’t he here with us then? Or is he? I didn’t know you had finally converted him and he developed invisibility as a power.”
That made Taehyung look at his friend, one eyebrow raised.
“Chim, you know he’s getting ready for the demonstration. You were right at his side when he was called in.” He folded the map and put it inside his bag. “Are you okay right now?”
Jimin pressed his lips together, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. “I am, Tae. Don’t worry. It’s just– There are a lot of humans here.”
And he was right. The convention they were assisting was a large one, around 20,000 people assisting. It was understandable that for Jimin, someone who was used to being around one human, the situation was quite overwhelming.
Taehyung grabbed Jimin’s hand. “We can go if you want, you know? Kook won’t be mad at you at all.”
“But he was so excited about his presentation… I don’t want to miss that.” Jimin pouted. “Why did you have to get a human boyfriend?”
“Well, for one, he’s cute,” Taehyung said, counting with his fingers. “Secondly, even you like him despite him being a human, I think that says a lot. Finally,” and this time he pressed his hold on Jimin’s hand, “I know you’re wary of humans. Hell, I can’t blame you at all. But this isn’t the 16th century. They won’t– Humans aren’t like that anymore. You know this.”
“Just because I know they won’t try to burn me does not mean I’ll trust them. Besides, there still are hunters. If there is one here, you know they will know who we are.”
“We haven’t encountered one in more than 20 years. I doubt they will try to pick a fight with us today.”
“But you can’t know for sure.”
“Chim—”
“Attention, the KSA presentation will begin in 10 minutes in section D. Attention, the KSA presentation will begin in 10 minutes in section D.”
“That’s Kook’s event,” Jimin murmured. Taehyung sighed.
“We can continue this conversation later. Let’s go.”
They silently walked to the event, still holding hands. Taehyung continuously kept sending worried looks at his best friend, who just had his eyes fixed on the floor in front of him. It broke Taehyung’s heart to see his best friend hurting, but he knew there wasn’t a lot he could do.
The damage humans had done to Jimin was just too much to forgive or forget.
It might have not been hunters, but less than five minutes later, Taehyung and Jimin ran into problems.
They had noticed that there were some available seats in the first row, so they automatically used their velocity to get there before anyone else could get there first. It took less than a second, a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, and they were sitting there, waiting for the event to start.
Or that should have been what happened. Instead, two men approached them.
“You’re in my seat,” said one of them. Taehyung looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
“There aren’t assigned seats,” he said, leaning on the back of the chair without stopping eye contact.
The dude got closer to Taehyung, using his index finger to poke his chest. “These are in the middle of the row, and we want to have the best view. So you are going to do as I say and move your ass to some other place.”
Jimin immediately hissed at him, his fangs showing out of his lips. “You useless humans should fucking learn that the universe doesn’t revolve around you. Now get the fuck out of here before I take that finger and bite it off.”
Taehyung immediately put his hand in Jimin’s thigh. “Jiminie–“
“Ugh, a bloodsucker, is fucking course,” the man’s friend said. “I don’t think you want to try and fuck with us. We won’t hesitate to fucking kick your old ass.”
Jimin stood up, golden eyes shining. Taehyung stood up right after him, grabbing his arm.
“They aren’t worth it. You don’t need to get your hands dirty for two random idiots.” But Taehyung’s green eyes were shining as well, just trying to maintain his calm. “The event is about to start, Jiminie. Let’s ignore them.”
“Who the fuck are you calling a random idiot? You don’t know who we are?” The men started laughing.
Taehyung stares at them, unimpressed. “No. Should I? Because I only see two kids trying to do something stupid.”
“This is why I don’t like humans. Seven thousand years and they’re just as fucking stupid as always.” Jimin crosses his arms. “Dubasses.”
“I’ll show you who is the dumbass you mother–“ the first guy yelled, his hand going to his pocket and taking out a crucifix. “Go to hell!”
The man threw the crucifix towards Jimin, who just let the crucifix hit him, an amused smile on his face.
Taehyung wasn’t as amused.
His green eyes turned gray, and the men in front of them immediately hit the floor, faces completely pale.
“W-What are you–?” Asked one, before his voice was completely gone, both his hands on his throat. Blood started dripping from his mouth. His friend started whimpering in pain, putting his hands on his ears, which were bleeding as well.
“You know, crucifixes do absolutely nothing to vampires like us,” Taehyung said, his voice as cold as the ice. “Another vampire might have been affected, not that you would know. And still, you tried to attack my Jiminie.” The whimpers increased. “You useless piece of shit should have stayed awa–“
“Tae,” Jimin called. As fast as it started, the bleeding stopped, the men in front of them letting sighs of relief.
Taehyung’s eyes went back to green, looking at the scene in front of him in horror. He immediately backed away.
“Shit, Jiminie—“
“I know,” Jimin said, his voice now soft. His eyes turned gray for a second, and he looked at the men in front of them. Their faces regained color, and the blood that had come out disappeared. They both looked at Jimin, completely terrified. “You two are lucky my power allows me to heal you, but next time I’ll be the one ripping your heads off. Now, go the fuck away.”
The men just nodded, running in another direction. But both Taehyung and Jimin could still hear them, cursing at them in the low.
Taehyung’s hands had started shaking.
“I-I didn’t–“ he mumbled, closing his eyes. Jimin rapidly directed him to their seats, before wrapping him in a hug. “I didn’t want to use them, Chim. You know–“
“I know how much you hate your powers, Tae. Don’t worry.” Jimin was running his fingers through Taehyung’s hair. “It’s ok, they already left.”
“We could have killed them. The treaty–“
“The treaty allows us to defend ourselves. They tried to attack us.”
“You know they couldn’t have done shit to us.”
“But they tried. They deserved the pain.”
“But–“
A security guard approached them. “Is everything okay over here?”
Jimin didn’t even look at him. “Yes. Now please, go away.”
“Sir, there were reports of–”
“I don’t care.”
“Sir–”
“The KSA presentation is about to start. Everyone please silence your cellphones and take a seat.”
The security guard sighed, before going away mumbling how he wasn’t paid enough. He was probably right.
For his part, Taehyung detangled himself from Jimin’s hold, giving him a small smile.
“Let’s pay attention, Chim,” he said. “This is all we came for, after all.”
“Yes,” Jimin nodded. “Let’s cheer for your boyfriend.”
The first part of the event was quite boring, a woman just talking about some company in general. Taehyung and Jimin mostly ignored it, not caring about the game or the company at all.
“And now,” she said, “we have invited two famous gamers to show you the mechanicals of the game, as well as for them to play a demo version. People in the audience, please, welcome JJK97 and OGVampJin today with us!”
Everyone started cheering, while Jungkook and another man appeared from the corners of the stage. Both Jimin and Taehyung immediately tensed.
“Jimin,” Tae started, “is that…?”
“Yes,” Jimin curtly said, clenching his hands.
“Hi, everybody! I hope you all are well today. My name is Jeon Jungkook, better known as JJK97.”
“How? He disappeared, I thought he–”
“I don’t know Tae, but…”
“And I am worldwide handsome, better known as OGVampJin, or Kim–”
“... Somehow, it appears that Seokjin didn’t die, after all.”
People around them were clapping, but neither Taehyung nor Jimin cared.
After almost two thousand years, their long-lost friend had appeared in front of them.
Immediately after the event ended, they used their powers to go backstage as quickly as possible. Jungkook was there with Seokjin, laughing at something.
Jungkook looked at them and smiled. “Guys! This is my fri–”
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Asked Taehyung, grabbing Seokjin’s shirt. Jimin was right beside him.
“We thought you had died, Seokjin. Where the fuck were you?”
“Uh, guys?” Asked Jungkook, his voice small and unsure.
“Tae, calm down and let me explain,” Seokjin said, grabbing Taehyung’s wrist.
“How do you want us to calm down? You disappeared from one day to another WITHOUT TELLING US.”
“WE LOOKED FOR YOU FOR CENTURIES.”
“Guys,” tried Jungkook again, louder this time.
“I had a reason! If only you two heard me out.”
“What could–”
“GUYS.” All three of them turned their heads to Jungkook. “Can any of you explain to me what’s going on? How do you know Seokjin?”
Taehyung finally released Seokjin, but his whole body was still tense— Like he was ready to fight at any moment. “He’s… An old acquaintance?.”
Seokjin scoffed, clearly offended. “I literally raised you on my back, and I’m only that?”
“He’s a vampire, Jungkook,” intervened Jimin. “Even older than us.”
Jungkook seemed confused, though. “What do you mean? He’s only five years older than me.” He looked at Seokjin, his big eyes filled with betrayal. “You… You didn’t lie, right? I’ve known you for seven years, you would have told me if you were a vampire too… right?”
Seokjin’s eyes softened. “Jungkookie…” He sighed. “You three, take a seat. And don’t interrupt me. I’ll explain what happened.”
They all did as Seokjin said, looking at him with different types of emotions, ranging from sadness to anger to some relief. Jungkook was between Jimin and Taehyung, the vampires acting as some sort of barrier between him and Seokjin. Seokjin decided not to say anything about it. Instead, he took off his bracelet, his previously brown eyes turning pink. Jungkook gasped.
“First of all, yes, I am a vampire,” Seokjin said, looking at Jungkook. “I didn’t tell you not because I didn’t trust you, Kook. But because I’m not just any vampire. How much do you know about original vampires?”
Jungkook looked at Taehyung and Jimin. “Well, you are older than other vampires, right? You have powers, and you weren’t converted. You just… Appeared like that.” All the vampires nodded. “Also, you kind of represent all the vampires? At least that’s what Jiminie and Tae do.”
“We do that here in Asia because we are the oldest,” Jimin said, before giving Seokjin a look. “Or that was what we thought. Turns out Seokjin had been just hiding all this fucking time instead of–”
“Jimin,” reprimanded Seokjin. “But yeah. I was born… I don’t even know when I was born. Not for sure, at least. We think it was ten thousand years ago? Doesn’t really matter. The point is that, back then, there weren’t any other vampires. Not that I was aware of, at least. It took me a long time to find others, and… most of them died, anyways. We didn’t know what we were, or why we looked like humans but… did things differently. Why we feed from them. I did see other creatures, of course, but… None of them were like us.” He sighed. “It was thousands of years later that I found Jimin and Taehyung.”
Taehyung pressed his lips together. “Seokjin found us when we were still babies. We were together, but– We don’t know why. We think whatever made us like this– It happened to both of us at the same time.”
“That’s also why we think our powers complement each other,” added Jimin.
Jungkook frowned. “I thought all original vampires had similar powers.”
Taehyung shook his head. “Seokjin can see the future, well, kind of. He has visions, but… They aren’t clear. Jimin and I are the only ones who can… control blood, control someone’s body. And even in our case, it isn’t the same power.”
“You… you said that yours was to harm someone,” Taehyung nodded, “and Jimin’s was to heal someone.”
“If Tae or I had converted a human, they would have developed similar powers to us in some way,” Jimin explained. “Those are second class vampires. But if a second class vampire decides to convert another person, then their power would be even weaker or they wouldn’t have one, to begin with. It… “He sighed. “That created a lot of problems because a lot of original vampires converted people just so they could control them and their powers, as they would be their sires. Lots of vampires died that way too.”
“After that, the few of us that are original decided it would be better to limit who we converted. We needed to… protect ourselves.” Taehyung sighed. “That’s also why most vampires today don’t have powers. They’re the product of more recent generations of vampires.”
“How many of you are left?” Jungkook asked.
“It’s difficult to say, but as far as we know… There are probably less than twenty of us. There could be more, there could be less.” Jimin looked at Seokjin. “We didn’t know about Seokjin, for example. But in all Asia there only the three of us and another two vampires, but they just want to be left alone.” He sighed. “I can’t blame them. If I could, I would get away from humans too forever.”
Seokjin raised an eyebrow. “I’m actually surprised you aren’t. Is it because of–”
“You still haven’t told us why you disappeared,” Taehyung rapidly interrupted, looking slightly alarmed. Seokjin blinked.
“Oh, yeah.” He crossed his legs. “For a long time, people thought that since I was the… first vampire, as far as we know, that if I was attacked, all other vampires would disappear. I tried to get away from you all, thinking that maybe if I did that then what I saw wouldn’t affect you all as well”
Taehyung frowned. “You know what happens when you try to change your visions. Why did you do it anyway?”
“Because it was necessary,” Seokjin said, shrugging his shoulders.
“What happens when he changes his visions?” Asked Jungkook.
“Well, the future can’t really be changed,” Jimin answered. “For example, if you’re destined to break a leg, it will happen regardless of what you try. Maybe differently, but it will happen.”
“Which leads us to the next question.” Taehyung was frowning, still looking at Seokjin. “What did you see? What could have been so bad that you risked going blind into that threat?”
“I saw hunters,” he said. Both Taehyung and Jimin froze. “They were following me, somehow. I needed to get away from you too. In my vision, they found me with you, so you were taken as well.”
“But you knew they would have found you anyway, why did you leave us then? We could have helped!”
“No, Jimin. You couldn’t have. The hunters... They were aided by an original, or a second class vampire.” Seokjin frowned. “When they found me they… trapped me for a long time, but I managed to escape. I never knew who helped him, though.”
“And what happened then?” Asked Jungkook.
“By the time I wasn't trapped Jimin and Tae were already gone, I didn’t know where to .” Seokjin looked at both vampires with a small smile. “That’s the only reason why I didn’t see you for so long. And when the treaty happened… I was already on another continent, and I didn’t want anything to do with the whole thing. I didn’t think either of you would be involved, not when we never were really in favor of humans.” He got closer to Taehyung and Jimin, putting a hand on both their shoulders. “I didn’t abandon you, I’m telling the truth. I just… I never found you.”
But Taehyung was still frowning. “We left around fifty years after you disappeared, that means…” He opened his eyes, face slightly pale. “You were trapped at least the same amount of time, if not for longer.”
Jimin jumped out of his seat, wrapping his arms around Seokjin in a tight hug. He closed his eyes, but tears were already falling. “Jinnie–”
“ Shhh .” Seokjin hugged him with one arm, opening the other for Taehyung, who immediately went for a hug as well.
“Shit, you could–”
“It doesn’t matter how long I was there,” Seokjin said, but his voice sounded a bit broken. “I’ve been alive for longer than any civilization, that time was nothing. If anything, I resent them only because they separated me from you. But that’s all. I killed them after I left.”
Jungkook stood up, putting his hand on Seokjin’s head. “I know it doesn’t mean the same from me,” he said, “but I’m glad you’re okay now.”
Seokjin smiled at him. “Thanks, Kook.”
There was a knock on the door, one staff member peeking his head inside the room.
“Jeon Jungkook?” Jungkook raised his hand. “Your panel starts in five minutes. It would be better for you to go now if you don’t want to be late.”
Jungkook’s eyes widened. “Shit, I forgot.” He looked at the vampires. Taehyung had separated from Seokjin, but Jimin was still crying on Seokjin’s shoulder. Jungkook went to Tae and hugged him, kissing his head. “Babe, I have to go now. You… You can go with Seokjin and Jimin back to the hotel, or you can join me later. This will take at least an hour.”
“I…” He looked at Jimin and Seokjin. “I think I’ll join you later. We need to finish our talk.”
Jungkook nodded, giving another kiss to Taehyung. “It’s fine. Take all the time you need.” He sighed. “I love you a lot, Tae.”
“I know,” Taehyung said, his lips slightly curving upwards. “Now go.”
Jungkook pressed his lips together, but left. Taehyung kept staring at the door for which he had exited.
“So…” Seokjin started, “how did you and Jungkook end up together?”
Jimin giggled. “Oh, you’re going to love this.”
Thirty minutes later, all of them were walking to Jungkook’s panel. The tension had left their bodies, and now they were joking amongst themselves. They all waved at Jungkook once they were near the table, Jungkook immediately waving back with a smile. Some of the people in line seemed to recognize Taehyung and Seokjin, for they immediately started taking pictures and talking amongst themselves.
Except for two of them, who were first in line.
“What the fuck, why are those freaks with Jin and Jungkook? And why are they cutting the line?”
Taehyung and Jimin immediately stopped, both of them recognizing the voices. What were the odds that they would see the men from earlier again?
Jungkook, on the other side, frowned.
“Excuse me?” He asked, looking at the men.
“Those two,” one of them pointed at Jimin and Taehyung. “Those are vampires. They attacked us earlier out of nowhere.”
Jimin frowned. “You literally threw a crucifix at me.”
“Still! You fucking monsters used your powers on us!” The other one said, now walking directly to them. Jungkook immediately stood up, but before he could put himself between the men and his friend and boyfriend Seokjin moved, grabbing both men and pushing them to the floor.
“Watch who you’re calling a monster, human,” Seokjin hissed, his pink eyes turning pinkier with rage. Around him, the click of cameras got louder. “Now, stay down.”
“The fuck– You’re one of them too ?”
“Sure I am. Now, shut up.” He turned to where the security was already coming. “Would you mind escorting these men outside?”
The security guards nodded while grabbing the men from the floor, who were already cursing Seokjin out. Jungkook walked to the center of the stage.
“I apologize for that. Now, does anyone have a problem with my vampire boyfriend and my vampire friends, or can we continue with the event?”
Later that day, they found themselves eating at a restaurant near the convention.
“So, now you’re living in a castle outside the city?” Asked Seokjin. All the others nodded. “Huh. And to think I live in an apartment on the other side.”
“You could always move with us,” suggested Jimin, smiling at him. “You know you’re more than welcomed with us.”
“And that way we can play together more!” Added Jungkook. Seokjin chuckled.
“I might take you on that offer. We have a lot to catch up on.” He looked at his mostly empty drink. “Hey Tae, can you come to help me get more drinks for us?”
Taehyung raised an eyebrow, but nodded, taking off the arm Jungkook had on his shoulders. “Sure. Let’s go.”
They walked to where the drinks were, quite the opposite side of the restaurant.
“So,” Seokjin started, his voice so quiet if it wasn’t because Taehyung was right beside him he wouldn’t have heard, “what’s happened to Hobi?”
Taehyung tensed. “Later. Once Jimin can’t hear us.”
Seokjin pressed his lips, taking two bottles out of the fridge. “That bad?”
Taehyung’s face fell. “Worse.”
“I see…” Seokjin turned around, looking at Jimin. “I hope he’s okay now.”
Taehyung sighed. “Let’s go, Jinnie.”
It wasn’t a topic Taehyung could afford Jimin to listen to.
He knew that name alone would break him down.
