Work Text:
When the late afternoon finally cooled down a little bit of the heat of this summer day, Mina decided she was done with her work and took her smartphone, unplugged it from her solar charger in her window and a pair of earbuds, moving out into a very special corner of the gardens. A large weeping willow tree gave enough shade to escape the bright sunlight, while still letting some rays fall through it’s long branches, some of them even touching the ground. She settled down against the tree trunk, pushing up the sleeves of the large button up shirt she actually stole from arthur a few weeks ago. The women in this time really had it hard and Mina refused to deal with the tortures of their clothing. She mostly wore pants and light shirts around the mansion.
She unlocked her phone and scrolled through her music list. After months in the 19th century without a change of playlist one sometimes the same songs over and over could get boring but she was grateful she had brought her solar charger and was still able to listen to it..and take pictures.
One of said pictures entered her sight when she typed in the code for the lockscreen. It had been taken one evening while Mina, Theo and Arthur had bullied Sebastian into joining them for an evening of games and drinking. The image showed a passed out Sebas on the table with a chess board, while Arthur stood behind him, laughing. Theo leaned over their friend, looking rather concerned. Mina smiled at the fond memories and tapped the music note on the screen.
She gently pressed the earbuds against her ears and soon after soft sounds came out of them. Her music taste was very depending on her mood and right now she preferred to listen to gentle medieval folk music. Mina closed her eyes and let her head rest against the tree, the music completely embracing her and making her forget the world around her.
Because of that she didn’t notice a shadow approaching her little hideout.
Dazai gently brushed the branches of the weeping willow aside and let his citrine coloured eyes rest on the form of the small woman in front of him. An unwilling smile tugged at his lips, reaching his eyes just for a split second. The pain in his heart easing just at the sight of her. Mina’s presence was nothing but soothing to him and he was drawn like a moth to the flame. Her brightness shined above all others. His own inner darkness might as well be it’s counterpart. The brighter the light the darker the shadows.
And yet neither of them could stay away.
Mina was lost in her own world, not noticing him even when he crouched down beside her. Dazai reached out and brushed a stray strand of fire red hair, which had come loose from her ponytail, to the side. That got her attention. Two jade eyes slowly opened and focussed on him, their expression instantly softened. His heart squeezed forcefully in the best way possible. A smile built on Mina’s lips and she shifted her position, opening her arms to him.
After a moment of hesitation, Dazai moved around her but eventually settled down between her legs so his head would rest against her stomach. He wrapped his arms around her waist. Mina looked down at him, brushing her fingers through his hair. With her other hand she reached for one of her earbuds and took it out, earning herself a confused glance from him. When he wanted to say something, she just shook her head and shushed him. Sometimes words were not needed.
Knowing very well he wasn’t familiar with modern technology, she placed the small device into his ears as careful as possible. Dazai tensed for a moment but when the music started playing again, he relaxed. A small sigh fell from his lips and Mina snickered quietly, when she returned to run her hand through the strands of his hair.
The quiet, serene moment let her think it would be alright. They would be alright. Both of them were broken in their own way but they could piece each other back together. She couldn’t see his eyes, since he had closed them, but the short moment where his arms tightened around her waist told her he thought the same. At least she hoped so. Dazai was an enigma, even to herself more often than not. However, Mina knew he would reveal everything in time when he was ready to do so. Time was something they had enough of.
With those thoughts sleep gently lured her into the land of dreams.
When she opened her eyes again the sun was already setting. Dazai was awake, laying on his back still at the same spot he was before, playing with one strand of her red hair. Mina’s heart was beating heavy and fast, as she smiled at him. He took the hand, which had been resting in his hair the whole time and pressed his lips to her palm.
The silence was soon interrupted by a sharp and very loud whistle coming from the mansion. Both of them flinched at the same time.
“Oi, Hondje! Dazai! I know you are out there. Dinner’s ready. If Sebas has to come for you two, I will not save you.” Theo’s voice sounded not angry in the slightest, despite his words and then there was quiet again.
They exchanged a short glance and started quietly laughing. Mina put away her phone and the earbuds, while Dazai jumped to his feet, offering her his hand and pulling her back to her back up. She brushed some leaves and grass from her pants. She found his eyes focussed on her when returning her attention to him. Dazai tilted his head a bit to the side and smirked.
She didn’t have the chance to react in any way before she was pulled into his arms and he kissed her lips. Mina gasped quietly, holding onto his shoulders, having to push herself up on her tiptoes to reach him properly. They parted for just a moment to smile at each other and then went back in for another kiss that didn’t end any time soon.
In the end, Sebastian had to drag them back for dinner...
