You would think that Wei Ying would know better by now, not to buy things online from sketchy websites…
But the sweater was just so cute.
It was soft and fluffy, patterned with pale blue and white stripes and those are Lan Zhan’s favorite colors! He had no other option but to click Buy Now .
It still is all of those things. The only problem is it's about five sizes too big.
The sweater hangs loosely off his shoulders and the hem ends about an inch above his knees. When he lets his arms drop by his sides his hands are so far up the sleeves that you wouldn't even know they were there. He swears he ordered a medium. He doesn’t know where he went wrong.
Now, Wei Wuxian is no small man–he did his fair share of sports in high school and he still goes on morning runs with his boyfriend on the rare occasions that he wakes up with him at 5:00am. The point is: he is not the problem here, the sweater is. It's only redeeming quality is that it really is as soft as promised.
After staring at himself in the mirror at just about every angle possible, Wei Ying decides to just say fuck it. He spent money on this and the website clearly states "No returns." He's going to wear this soft and ridiculously large sweater, and he's going to like it. If nothing else, at least it’s funny.
The sweater is almost long enough to be a dress, so he figures wearing it over just a pair of boxers is perfectly fine. He’s at home anyway, and his boyfriend has seen him in far more scandalous states of undress. Lan Zhan doesn’t get back from his evening classes for another hour, so Wei Ying grabs his laptops and plops himself down on the couch., mindlessly scrolling through Netflix until he hears the sound of a key sliding into the lock on their apartment door.
He hurriedly shoves his computer off his lap and gets up to greet his boyfriend. He waits until Lan Zhan has fully entered the apartment and shut the door behind him before he jumps out and yells, "Welcome home!"
Wei Ying stands there smiling, with his hands in the air, the huge sweater fully concealing the shape of his body.
Now, from anyone else he would expect pointing and laughing, maybe even vocal mockery from someone like Jiang Cheng. The sweater is that funny. While Lan Zhan is obviously more reserved, he expects at least an amused scoff, maybe a "Ridiculous." Instead, he gets nothing. Lan Zhan just stares.
"Lan Zhan? Hello?" Wei Ying tilts his head and waves his hands. "Gege?"
The endearment finally snaps Lan Zhan out of his stupor.
"Wei Ying."
"Yes, that's me!' Wei Ying smiles even wider. "Do you like my new sweater? I bought it online, but it's a bit too big, huh?"
Lan Zhan neither confirms or denies.
"I look silly, don't I?" Wei Ying continues. "It's okay, you can admit it."
Suddenly, and surprisingly adamantly, Lan Zhan shakes his head. "No… you look…" Lan Zhan's ears redden.
"What do I look like, gege?" Wei Ying prods.
Lan Zhan turns away, too embarrassed to make eye contact. Unfortunately for him, it makes his rosy ears even more visible to Wei Ying.
Wei Ying is about to tease him even more when Lan Zhan then turns back to look at him. Then, looking intensely into Wei Ying’s eyes and tone far too serious, he says, "Cute."
Now it’s Wei Ying’s turn to redden. "Aha, Lan Zhan,” he lets out a flustered laugh. “One word from you can reduce me to such a gooey mess.” His cheeks feel so hot. Actually all of him feels hot. Is it the sweater? Is he dying? “I thought we agreed you would warn me first before you say things like this,” he whines. “Do you want me to die?"
"Please don't die," Lan Zhan whispers with the slightest teasing lilt.
Wei Wuxian laughs blithely. Over the time they've been dating, Lan Zhan has loosened up incrementally until now he smiles at Wei Yings jokes and occasionally he’ll even turn Wei Ying’s back on him. Now, more often than not, Wei Ying is the one blushing and stuttering at Lan Zhan’s teasing–a complete reversal of how they were when they met in high school. Despite this, Wei Ying has absolutely no qualms about this development in their relationship.
"Okay, I won't, I won’t. Just for you.” Wei Ying smiles sweetly. “Anyway come touch it, it's fluffy." Wei Wuxian holds out his arm.
Lan Zhan steps forward and gently takes the sleeve Wei Ying has offered him and runs it between his fingers. However, he doesn’t stop there.
Lan Zhan puts both hands on Wei Ying’s shoulders and drags them down his arms and back up, fingers slipping underneath the loose collar momentarily, causing Wei Ying to flush. He caresses the material covering his chest as well before stopping to hold Wei Ying’s slender waist, causing the sweater to bunch around his large hands. He slides them down even further until his fingers are gripping the hem. Then, Lan Zhan sticks both hands under the sweater and starts running them up his sides.
"Lan- Lan Zhan that tickles." Wei Ying barely manages to get out through his giggles. Lan Zhan continues to tickle him. "Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying wheeze-screams before grabbing Lan Zhan’s wrists before he can do any more damage.
Even once he’s been apprehended, Lan Zhan looks far too smug. Wei Ying needs to get that expression off his face immediately. He does the only thing he can think of. He pulls his boyfriend into a kiss. He still feels Lan Zhan smiling against his lips, so Wei YIng deepens the kiss until all Lan Zhan can think about is the slide of their lips against each other.
They stay like that for quite some time, kissing in the entryway of their apartment before eventually they're interrupted by Wei Ying’s stomach growling.
Wei Ying groans as they separate, annoyed by his own stomach for disturbing them. But when he looks up he sees that Lan Zhan’s fond smile is back and immediately forgets all of his prior grievances.
“Would you like me to cook dinner?” Lan Zhan asks, his voice and his eyes both impossibly warm.
“Only if you make me dàndànmiàn, ” Wei Ying grins.
Lan Zhan smiles again (so many times in one night!!) and replies, “Mn.”
