“See anything interesting?” whispered a low voice, the speaker’s hot breath on the shell of your ear. You yelped a little in surprise and instinctively closed the TV Guide you were reading, and you turned around to find Weather Report’s face only inches from your own.
“You’re always so quiet!” you murmured, leaning over from where you were sitting on the piano to take a look down at Weather’s feet. He was standing on his tippy toes like usual, and you giggled. While there were many things you adored about your boyfriend, the gentle grace he exhibited moving through space on the tips of his toes was one of the most captivating. “Do you think maybe you did ballet before?”
“I wouldn’t know,” he gently reminded you, before leaning in a bit closer to place a small kiss on your cheek. “I just find it comforting to move like this.” He gingerly reached his hand over to open the TV Guide on your lap again, delicately flipping the pages until he came to the one you had been on when he arrived. “Ah,” he said quietly into your ear again. “Cooking shows. I like when the guides include pictures of food in this section.” His fingers traced gently over an image of a chef presenting a nice roast chicken to the camera. “Especially when they’re in color like this one is.”
“I was just trying to put myself in a Weather Report frame of mind. I thought understanding why you like reading these things so much would give me more insight,” you said with a goofy grin.
He chuckled softly. “And did it?”
“Not particularly,” you admitted with a shrug, hopping down off the piano and handing his TV Guide back to him. “But I’m glad you get something out of them.”
“They’re easy,” he said simply. While others had a hard time understanding his speech and his other various idiosyncrasies, you understood exactly what he meant. He often felt like something of a ghost, drifting between the tangible and intangible world and looking for purchase wherever he could find it. TV Guides were one of the things that made it ‘easier’ to stay grounded in this world, to explore the locked doors of his mind with some degree of focus. He had said TV Guides were a simulacrum of some sort of real world that existed outside these prison walls, some sort of real world that he must have come from.
“Want to know what else is easy?” you asked with a grin. You stood on your tiptoes to mirror his stance and gave him a kiss of your own, on his forehead. “Mwah!” you called out before spinning away on your toes with a laugh. “My love for you!”
He gave a small smile on his otherwise stoic face before setting the TV Guide down and quietly drifting through the space after you. “I find nothing easier than loving you as well,“ he said, a little firmer since he was no longer next to your ear, but still not more than a loud whisper.
You stopped so he could catch up to you, and once he was back within your reach you brought your hands up to the side of his face to stroke the soft fur of his hat. “I just love how fluffy you are,” you said with a big smile.
He brought his hands up to place over yours, picking them up off his hat and bringing them to his lips to kiss your knuckles with a dreamy expression on his face.
“I was hoping I’d be alone in here with you today at some point,” you said, your feet plopping back down on the ground since you weren’t able to sustain standing on your toes for long like Weather could.
“Oh?” he said, tilting his head in curiosity.
“Anasui is always so surly when I’m cuddling up to you. I think he’s jealous.” You wrapped your arms around your boyfriend’s muscular frame and laid your head on his shoulder. “It’s nice to spend time alone with you without his constant judgement.”
“Why should Anasui be jealous? He has Jolyne, doesn’t he?” Weather Report asked, bringing his hand up to stroke your hair.
“What, because he says so? I don’t even think she knows he exists,” you said with a laugh. “No, they don’t have what we have at all. What we have is special.”
Weather Report gave an affirmative hum, and you backed up a bit so you could look into his eyes. He always looked so contemplative and distant until his eyes met yours. When he was looking at you there was always a gentleness to them. He was grounded.
You smiled at his cute expression and leaned in to kiss him on the lips. He seemed caught off guard, and when you backed up he was blinking a few times. You gave a soft laugh. He always looked so surprised whenever you kissed his lips, as if he had forgotten it was a place that someone could kiss. No matter how many times you kissed his lips it always seemed to affect him as if it was the first time all over again.
Soon he was leaning forward to kiss you himself. He didn’t often do it, because despite his unaffected aura you believed that he was self conscious about what Anasui thought on some level. This was why you so desperately craved these little moments alone together with him.
You decided to be a bit bold and you deepened the kiss, wrapping your arms around him again to pull him closer. Again, he seemed to falter for a moment before he was matching your kisses. He kissed a bit awkwardly, not used to kissing like this, hesitant about what to do and how much pressure to use, but he quickly found what you liked the most if your quiet giggles were anything to go by.
You two finally separated and you stared quietly at each other for a moment before you stood on your tiptoes to lean really close to his ear, as he usually did with you.
“I love you,” you whispered.
“I love you too,” he whispered back.
