Work Text:

His thoughts race so quickly he can't distinguish them, and by extension, can't dwell on them. He thinks, but his mind is blank and calm.

Dark asphalt stretches before him, stringing him along. His destination is unknown. Grey eyes steel against the blinding dashboard lights until they fade into the background. 1:38 a.m.

Occasionally, clusters of lights will pop up on the horizon. Fast approaching strips of restaurants and gas stations. His eyes flicker to the lights, acknowledging the change in scenery before refocusing on the bit of road between his headlights.

The radio is on but he isn't listening. Music fades out and a DJ speaks but is ignored. His hands grip the steering wheel tighter.

At some point the tears fall, blurring his vision until he blinks them away and they roll gracefully down his face and neck. The collar of his stolen, too-big t-shirt absorbs them and promises to keep them safe. His breath quickens but he makes no noise.

Warm wind whips his silver locks into and out of his eyes. Ordinarily this would be irritating but he opts to let it slide. His eyes are looking but aren't seeing, so it doesn't matter anyway.

He sits for a moment longer, staring, before willing himself to get out of the car and go inside.

Miles crawls into bed, eyes locked forward. He sighs. 3:21 a.m. Warm arms wrap around his waist and pull him close. A nose nuzzles against his neck. His eyes close and he sinks into the touch, resting but unable to sleep.
