Summary
Firelight casts his tall, pronged shadow across the flagstones to rest at her feet.
His timing is hideous. It always is.
Byleth rights herself, draws her weapon from the dirt with a firm tug; clutches a steel sword close left, motions her students back; sprints across tiles; vaults over flames. But there is no cavernous taunt to beckon her, no scythe to meet her sword. Only the thump of his mount’s hooves and the splintering purr of hellfire fill the silence between them.
When Byleth wakes from her years-long sleep, reeling from a nightmare of her last moments alive, she finds the unexpected ally she had gained that night is hundreds of miles away. For several moons, she buries the memory. Until Arianrhod.
After an abrupt reunion, the Death Knight struggles with conflicting feelings for his old rival and the unspeakable thing he has awakened in her.
