Sparkle

Summary:

Monoma and Aoyama converse over a meal together. Monoma's slightly surprised at how much he likes mingling with the competition.
~~~
Aoyama claps. “You brought the non-alcoholic wine!”
Kaminari’s smile falters to Monoma’s enjoyment, but only for a second. “Aoyama, I didn’t know I was supposed to buy anything fancy, you shoulda told me! I thought you preferred this kind…”
In a moment of graciousness, Monoma waves Kaminari’s worries off. “You are correct. That is his favourite. We’re just higher class than you. Only peasants refer to non-alcoholic wine as ‘juice’. But of course, you wouldn’t know that, now would you?”
Work Text:
Monoma crosses one leg over the other as he wipes non-existent dust from his pants. Pulling on the chain of his pocket watch, he pops the trinket open with a smirk. Closing the watch, he taps a finger three times, in counting.
Upon the third tap, the chair across from him is pulled out elegantly.
“My sincerest apologies for my tardiness, Mon Cher,” Aoyama sits across from the other hero student, mirroring his posture,”I spotted a necklace almost as magnifique as moi and I just had to stop to admire it's sparkle as a ray of sunlight hit it at just the right angle.”
The smile softens just the slightest bit as Monoma clicks his tongue before chuckling. “I must call bullshit when I see it, class A rival,” he leans into the palm of his hand, “You planned to arrive fashionably late, like always.”
Aoyama fakes a gasp, “Why Neito, whatever would give you such an idea?”
“You’ve consecutively been seven minutes late to every get together we’ve had after the third time. Not long enough to make me wonder if you’re coming at all, but just enough to make me wonder where you are, when you’ll get here.”
Aoyama giggles, “It looks like you got me figured out.”
Monoma holds a finger up, wagging it in a no motion as he closes his eyes. “That isn’t all, Yuga. I also gave you the wrong time, so you would show up on time.” The smirk returns full force when the teen opens his eyes to give his friend a smug look, eyes filled with the self-satisfaction of out planning the other.
“You’re absolutely brilliant Mon Cher!” Aoyama opens a box of various cubed cheeses and sets it on the table between them. “So me being here on time means that I haven’t missed Kaminari!”
Monoma’s smirk drops as he rolls his eyes. “No, you haven’t. I told him to be here two minutes or so after the time I had set for you to be here. Well,” the smirk ghosts over his lips one more time before it disappears, “nine minutes.”
“Hey guys!” Kaminari walks into view. “I brought the grape juice you asked for. I also picked up the bread from Sato. His is the best.”
Aoyama claps. “You brought the non-alcoholic wine!”
Kaminari’s smile falters to Monoma’s enjoyment, but only for a second. “Aoyama, I didn’t know I was supposed to buy anything fancy, you shoulda told me! I thought you preferred this kind…”
In a moment of graciousness, Monoma waves Kaminari’s worries off. “You are correct. That is his favourite. We’re just higher class than you. Only peasants refer to non-alcoholic wine as ‘juice’. But of course, you wouldn’t know that, now would you?”
The confounded look doesn’t leave Kaminari’s face as he sets the bottle down on the table along with a handkerchief. He uses his quirk to heat up the bread so it’s warmth amps up. “Anyways, enjoy your lunch guys. Hit me up if you want me to pick up anything else!” Kaminari gives them a smile before waving and taking his leave.
Monoma’s gaze lazily shifts over to his friend, who is staring straight at him for once. He raises a brow. “Pardon?”
“I know you find him charming, in a dim way.”
Once the statement processes, Monoma just laughs. “Okay. I just still don’t know how he won over Shinso. I was really hoping to convince him to join class B.”
“Dear Denki? He didn’t try. Shinso is into two things: blonds and dumbasses. Kaminari is sweet, but also runs on only one brain cell at a time.” Aoyama flips his bangs. “I should know; I run on similar energy.”
Monoma waves that comment off, “Oh pish posh Yuga. You actually have taste and class.” The teen reaches into his bag to pull out two wine glasses. “You and Shinso are the only valid class A students in my eyes.”
Aoyama watches as Monoma pours the non-alcoholic wine. “I know you’re warming up to us, but at your own pace. And that’s okay.” He reaches over to tear off a small chunk of bread to pair with a piece of cheese.
Monoma looks up to the other as he places one of the glasses in front of the sparkling blond. “All of you have such main character complexes. Whether it’s born from your quirks, your personalities, or your backstories.”
Aoyama finished chewing on his food before speaking. “Mon Cher, everyone is the main character of their own story. You are a main character. You don’t need some flashy quirk or a tragic backstory and flaw for that.”
Monoma watches as the rays of sunlight that drip in through the gaps of the leaves from the trees above accentuate Aoyama’s natural sparkle.
He just chuckles as he brings himself out of his stupor. “I quite like my role as a support character who gains the upper hand on the mains.” For once, he’s the one who avoids the other’s eyes as he takes a sip of the beverage. “Your words have earned my gratitude, though,” Monoma whispers under his breath.
Aoyama almost didn’t catch it.
But he did.
