Daisuke nearly sprinted to Haru’s side when the doctor told him that his husband was fine, and that their daughter was healthy and well. A second away from Haru’s side was a second wasted, but Daisuke wasn’t allowed in the operation room for obvious reasons. Still, his soul was damn near close to leaving his body and his mind bullied him, making him think of the multiple things that could go wrong. He loved Haru dearly, and though he had never met his daughter, not yet at least, he also loved her as much. He couldn’t bear the thought of any harm coming to either of his dearest ones.
When he opened the door, his heart did multiple gymnastic feats in his chest. Haru was sweaty, tired and looked absolutely exhausted. And yet, to Daisuke, that was the most beautiful sight in the world. Haru with his hair messy, eyes fluttering tiredly, slightly red, suggesting tears, with sweat soaking the bed. He had a maternal glow, soft and puffy. Daisuke wanted to wrap his arms around this beautiful man, who loved him so much he would trust Daisuke as the father of his child. He loved him so much.
And in his arms, the second most beautiful sight in the world, rivalling her mother. Their daughter looked more like Haru, with those rosy cheeks, slightly tanned skin, and those golden eyes. But the hair, the nose and the lips were all her father. She was precious, gorgeous, and deserved everything her tiny little heart desired. Right now, what she desired was her mother’s touch, crying and nuzzling against Haru’s chest.
Daisuke’s heart swelled with love as Haru sang to her, a gentle motherly lullaby, cradling her in his arms. Haru looked up at him and smiled, shifting himself slightly and patting the bed. At that, the Kambe head moved and sat on the chair next to his husband, eyes staring at their beautiful daughter. Haru giggled, and it calmed Daisuke’s nerves.
“Here she is, Daisuke,” Haru said, looking tired but oh so beautiful in Daisuke’s eyes. Then, Haru cooed to their child, “Come on, baby, say hi to daddy.”
Daisuke’s heart beat rapidly in his chest as he held his daughter’s tiny hand in his. He reassured himself over and over that this was real, he had a lovely husband and a lovely daughter.
“What do we name her?”
Daisuke looks into the beautiful eyes of his daughter and whispers, “Haru.”
Dear Haru,
What to say to you?
You have my smile,
You have your mother’s name.
“Haru?”, Haru echoed, amused, “Now, wouldn’t that get confusing, honey?”
“But it’s perfect.”, He answered, holding her carefully in his arms. God, she was so tiny. Were all babies this tiny? She was so fragile, and his heart ached at the thought of his daughter getting hurt. With this, he held her tighter to his chest, but panicked when she started wailing. She immediately calmed down when Haru held her and guided her to his nipple.
Daisuke was amazed. How did he get so lucky?
When you came into the world, you cried.
And it broke my heart.
He reached out again when she was done, and she giggled so cutely. Oh, she was every bit of her mother. That giggle rang like the bird’s melodic chirping, just like Haru’s. She opened her eyes, and made grabby hands at him. “She wants her daddy to hold her,” Haru told him, and encouraged him with that smile that Daisuke had fallen deeply in love with, “You can do it, Suki.”
She relaxed against him, and that was when Daisuke started crying. The happiness was too much, and he held her as gently and as protectively as he could. He was a selfish man, he was greedy, and sometimes he was cruel. He used to be a drug addict, he used to drown himself in all the luxuries and pleasures in the world. Some might consider him the devil, especially with his recent reputation. And yet, he was blessed with this. A family. Something he never thought he’d have a chance at getting again.
This gorgeous angel of a man, Kambe Haru, had given him a chance. A chance at the domestic kind of life. Taking days off from his company to make way for school fairs, school plays and field trips. Coming home to dinner waiting for him at the table, with the warmest smiles and laughs filling his once empty mansion. Suzue could finally be an aunt and dote on their little sunshine. Daisuke could spoil his daughter rotten, and Haru would disagree only a little.
Following his father’s footsteps, he lovingly kissed their daughter’s cheek. Like his father was to his mother, Daisuke could be a great man to Haru too. Both of his Harus. Heaven knows how
much Daisuke loved them.
I am dedicating every day to you.
Domestic life was never quite my style.
When you smile
You knock me out, I fall apart
And I thought I was so smart.
Haru wiped away his tears with his finger, tears brimming his own honey eyes. They cried together with joy, a new family, they were complete, at last. They tangled their hands, holding their daughter’s hand as well. Suzue stood at the doorway, a tear slipping down her porcelain face as her heart filled with unadulterated joy. After so many years of her brother being so cold, so empty, he’s finally found joy. And her dear friend was also happy. She couldn’t ask for anything more.
She turned away to give them space. She would gush and coo over her niece later.
“Haru,” Daisuke whispered, calming down.
Haru let out a wet chuckle, “Which one?”, he asked, before laughing at Daisuke’s unamused stare. “I thought I was the one who was supposed to come up with the dad jokes?”, Daisuke teased, playing with their daughter’s hair.
“With your dry humor?”, he jested, “Heaven’s no, honey. I’ll do the jokes until you learn how to make them.”
“Darling, are you saying I’m not funny?”
“Exactly.”
Daisuke couldn’t even pretend to be mad, he simply just threw his head back and laughed.
